Is there a clan term that means the opposite of chalcas?
>>94268712> What's a chalcas?
Why do they make new battlemechs in universe when they can all do the same within the same tonnage? Just make more variants of a single chassis every 5 tons.
Where I can read extended lore on a specific mech?
>>94268756Because in universe there are more design and construction challenges than we see in the rules. On some designs, they tried to overhaul them into something else and it resulted in such severe problems that it was unworkable and the prototypes are saddled with half a dozen negative quirks.
>>94268756The game is heavily abstracted. Neither the gameplay nor mech construction rules accurately depict in-setting reality.
>>94268731Anyone who disagrees or challenges clan customs. Like saying that Clan Sea Fox's selling of their own worker caste into sexual slavery is abhorrent would cause you to be viewed as a dezgra chalcas.
>>94268756Why do they make different cars in our universe when they can all do the same within the same vehicle class? Just make more variants of a single chassis every new vehicle class
>>94268822anon you're supposed to say> Nothin', what's a chalcas with you?
>>94268822so what’s the opposite term, if there is one?
>>94268849There isn't one. Please stop asking the same question over and over.
>>94268849>>94268913Try "honourable".
>>94268916Sure, now stop asking about it.
>>94268913Please don’t reply to questions that you are too ignorant to answer.
>>94268916Honorable is probably the correct answer in terms of Clannerspeak developing in Clan Space where everyone is a Clanner. There may not have been any reason to have a neologism for behaving the way everyone is expected to behave. But after the Invasion, when the Clans encountered Spheroids who behaved honorably despite not being Clanners (for example Snow Raven’s appraisal of the Outworlds Alliance) I figured there might have arisen a term for acting in a “Clan-like” manner.
>>94259070 Love how the mental disorders squad brigaed to screech about BLP.
>>94268756In his recent Sarna interview, Johannes Heidler (Associate Developer for ‘Mech Design) said>Well, the secret is we don’t need any new ‘Mechs. We’ve got thousands and thousands and thousands of ‘Mechs. That’s obviously not diagetic to the setting, but it shows that at least somebody at CGL is thinking along the same lines as you:
>>94268916in that case, why “chalcas” rather than “dishonorable”?
Thinking about running a battletech campaign for a player who is growing bored of BV balanced pickup games with no consequences. Any tips/tricks/ suggestions beyond picking up campaign operations?
>>94269249because nicholas was a retard who wanted absolute control over everyone. and one of the tools of getting that was by dictating how to use language in his reigme.
>>94269283iirc the book in the mercenaries box has a nice guide for playing merc campaigns>>94269287>Nicholas was a retardno argument from me there but coming up w a term for people behaving how you want, as well as for how you don’t want seems like a good idea
>>94269249Because people who aren't part of the Clan system can't perform chalcas acts in the first place. That term is reserved for acts that are traitorious or high treason towards the system of the Clans in general.Acts that are dishonourable may be damaging to law and mores and politically incorrect, but they aren't considered attacks on how things ought to be.It's passing on nuclear secrets to the Soviet Union vs keeping nuclear secrets at a private club you operate within the US.
>>94269201I love how you're still talking about it because you can't accept that somebody that shares your infantile views was also a shit writer that has lied about the level of his involvement in the setting for decades and tries to take credit for other people's work since they aren't even invloved anymore to contradict him.
>>94269474That’s a really good distinction between behaving in a disgraceful manner versus opposing the status quo.Someone can become dezgra (say for panicking in combat) even if they are completely bought into Clan values.Logically, the reverse would also be true and “honorable” would not cover the idea of supporting Clan values. An antonym for “chalcas” would be useful even just in Clanspace because the Clans undoubtedly argued about which one of them was the most aligned to Clan values/acted in the most “clan-like” way.
>>94269502You sound like Rusty Zimmerman. Similar verbosity. Still banned at X?
WIP for 1st Ghost Regiment. I tried following a guide online for painting scales. It's tabletop-quality but I'm debating stripping and starting over.
>>94269653The ones in the Cyclops look better than the ones in the Dragon.
So I've been playing the Battletech videogame and having some good fun with it. One thing that's really striking to me is how much reverence some of the weapons are treated with. I played a ton of MWO a few years ago, and I got used to just having access to every weapon system under the sun, but then in Battletech, after having had to make do with regular lasers and ACs, finally getting access to a gauss rifle or pulse lasers is a big deal. Never realized just how much tech declined after the Star League fell.

GET OUT OF THE WAY BEST CLAN ASSAULT COMING THROUGH
>>94269201He was already such a liability that the next controversy he suffered was going to get him axed.If it wasn't that, it was going to be the next time he stumbled across a review of his books that said "eh, it was okay" and said they should be put to death for it. Because he was already doing that shit.
>>94270165>>94270235That's what I was thinking as I painted it. At least now I know I can and should paint up some Highlanders next. I'll increase the scale density and wash the Dragon (which is what I did to the Cyclops), and play around a bit on the Thug and Spider. Thanks again.
Best paint stripper to use on the plastic minis with TAP speedpaints? I was trying to do Warrior House Inara colors and tan paint I used came out looking way too orange. It's a fucking Vindicarrot.

I need a Mook mech for a Periphery nation. Wealthy enough for Mechs but nothing beyond 40-45 tons. The head honcho is gonna have a Frankenmech Hunchback and that'll be the heaviest. Era is 3155. Any suggestions?
>>94271502Look through TRO:VA for examples.
>>94271968hermes II. 40 tons, in production for a very long time, widely manufactured and sold
>>94271968>3 years to the futureWhat happened to the Inner Sphere by then?
>>94271998Not much of anything. Same old same old. Life under Clan Wolf, with Wolf trying to stretch itself but halted at its borders.>>94271993Hmm. A good idea. Maybe a mix of Hermes and Vulcans.
>>94271968The Clint works well for the Canopus/Taurian part of space, but not the other borders of the Inner Sphere. That's where they ended up. The Hermes II is very similar and found anywhere near the FWL. The Vulcan is less geographically restricted, though extra common near Lyran space.I could see the Blackjack being a good pick, since there are a lot of them but they aren't widely liked by anyone who can afford to be picky. Or the Whitworth.
>>94272036Oooh, the Clint. That things a piece of junk, perfect for a Periphery lord to have. Maybe fifty of them too.
>>94271824Not Battletech. Off topic. Stop spamming the thread with unrelated images.
>>94272090Lay off it.
Turn 7 campaign moves were tonight. Dragoons(red) and Steiner(Blue) players couldn't make it, so we're waiting on them. Only battle is my Assault Lance attacking the Dragoons at the Armorworks, but the Dragoons have a chance to deny action since they haven't moved yet.Kickstarter did not come today. Tracking still says "Today, estimated between 9:30 and 1:30" but it's now almost 7, so I'm guessing tomorrow.
>>94272036The blackjack being not well liked is an early timeline thing, by Ilclan it hasn't gotten a new variant in a while but still has plenty of perfectly serviceable variants and an Omni version.
>>94271968If it's that late in the timeline, you can get weird shit like the Quasit or Storm Raider.
>>94270991Alongside this and the hoplite, what are some other cute mechs to throw in a lance?
>>94272090
>>94270838No problem, I gotcha. I can’t really do anything without the tracking number but I will say delays happen. Our Memphis hub alone processes like 15 million packages a night, and sometimes there’s so much volume that cargo canisters for the planes have to be stacked up waiting for aircraft. You should see how it gets when a blizzard hits or the volume of delays with the hurricanes.Anyway, what pack are you waiting on?
Did they add the Sun Tzu book to everyone's order or am I about to be on the receiving end of a positive error? All the rest of my stuff was delivered in the first couple weeks of fulfillment, but I just got an email from QML that that book just shipped to me. I don't remember it being part of my order.
>>94272812The annotated Art of War? It was included in every pledge above a certain threshold, I think Battalion and up>>94272514I'm waiting on Company pledge plus several neoprene mat add ons. The 3x Savannah pack and the fieldtech one, to go with my hextech terrain
>>94271998>What happened to the Inner Sphere by then? After the Capellan Confederation falls to the combined might of Wolf and it's closest attendant clans and granted to CJF as a new OZ the rest fall quickly. The FWL is betrayed from within and seized by an emergent Clan Nova Cat. The Draconis Combine cannot withstand the combined assault on fronts and is partioned between Clan Ghost Bear and Clan Snow Raven even as CSR forces the Federated Suns to bend the knee. The Lyran Commonwealth had no hope and no leadership so is nominally placed under CSJ after their surrender.
It'd be cool if like an actual, factual Communist Revolution happened with the Capellans. A rebel force of fanatics that want to overthrow the false aristocracy they live under. You don't even have to have them succeed, in fact it's more interesting if they don't. Have them be a long term communist insurgency that the Liaos can never quite stamp out, but it's very existence embarrasses the state, like the Communists in the Philippines, or the Zapatistas. Never getting much done that they want to get done, but always casing more damage than they should be able to. That would be a neat counter balance to the wanking of Xin Sheng, I think.
>>94272913>these wumaos >either letting the commies lose or toppling xin sheng pingtheir masters would probably order the sweatshops to melt future minis even morebut yes a classic capellan/red revolution vs. state worship/xin sheng faggotry would be a cool direction to take them in you could even have all the normal units fucking pissed about the warrior houses getting wanked off so they're relevant again
>>94272435Crab, Firefly, Raptor IIThe King Crab is the ultimate battle pancake, but that changes the lance quite a bit.
>>94272913If the Capellans have a communist revolution, then I want the Lyrans to have a mega-corp coup.
>>94272953>every great house getting more flavor>civil wars fucking everywhere>corpos being more interesting than just being a novelty faction you can paint your lances asoh yeah, it's all coming together
>>94272913The point of the capellans is that it's all the worst bits of communist china without even the pretense anyone is attempting to make things better for the regular people. If they are going to have a long term insurgency it should be from the worlds that were part of the republic, FedCom and st ives. Similar vibes to being a maoist guerilla well into the 2000s but for systems that were actually good at some point.
>>94272939And you could even have all the normal beats, like foreign support for the rebels, atrocities on both sides that incite more violence, politicized cartels to fund the rebels. There's a lot you can do there, and it would only broaden the Capellans and make them more interesting and more believable, which they could use.>>94272953I'm fine with that, it would be cool, but corporations would have way more power starting out than some politicized hicks that can't read or write. I don't know how you would do that without fundimentally changing the faction, which would stand the chance of alienating Lyran fans, which you don't necessarily want to do. If you can do that and walk the tightrope though, that would be great.
>>94273019You could alternatively use ideological factions, like Maoists and Stalinists and Trotskyists, fighting each other and the state.I just really find communist insurgencies of the 20th century super interesting and I really want them to resmble that if they're going to exist in Battletech. But I can't argue that your characterization would make more sense, even if I think it wouldn't be as cool as crusty commies hunkering in their own shit for a week only to get naped anyway.
>>94272913I think it'd be more likely for some weird cult to gain prominence. The cappies have a lot of weird cults like the Thuggees and their half dozen offshoots, New Hedons, the Lorix Order, Church of the Future Present, the Worm Cult, and of course the warrior houses. There's a lot of fucked up mysticism floating around in the Confederation. Sometimes it even entangled a Liao or two, such as Kali(-ma!) Liao.
>>94273069Mostly I think it would be funny to have in universe people holding grudges about the run up to the FedCom civil war the way modern twitter anarchists and communists talk about inter war Germany and Russia
>>94273019>The point of the capellans is that it's all the worst bits of communist china without even the pretense anyone is attempting to make things better for the regular people.I thought the point was Commie Russia/China mega state run by Flash Gordon's Ming the Merciless.
>>94273024>I don't know how you would do that without fundimentally changing the faction, which would stand the chance of alienating Lyran fansYou wouldn't necessarily have to have this scenario be the end of House Steiner. It could be something where the corpos overthrow the existing government, but rather than rule directly CIS-style, they install a distant Steiner relative on the throne as a puppet leader to legitimize their coup. So, you could still have some ongoing aristocratic Germanic elements to the faction to keep the old-school Steiner fans content, with the possibility that a future generation of Steiners might fully regain power as the Lyran Commonwealth eventually digs itself out of the mess it's currently in.
>>94273107That would be fantastic. You can have alt-history nerds arguing whether or not the FedCom would've been able to beat the Clans single handed if it had stayed together, with Lyrans saying that Suns were holding them back or something. Just absolute history nerd brainrot.
>>94273114>if Mongo was a Democratic People's Republic, but Ming is still in chargeMan I wish.
>>94273173Yeah that would be fantastic, not too dissimilar to my Draconis Partition, where you have Rasalhague, the Raven Alliance and the FedSuns invade and partition the Combine and reorganize the government into some limpwristed neo-liberal democracy, not unlike modern Japan, but you have the FedSuns constantly antagonizing them(not unlike inter-war France with Weimar Germany) and the deposed Kuritas still wildly popular by incredibly divisive. Have old DCMS vets turned MP shouting BANZAI in the National Assembly and all that. You could even vamp up Social Generals to be like witless executives.
>>94269685Roguetech makes this even worse. Finding good FCS by coring out a mech before the pilot can eject is incredibly important.
>>94273173>>94273338>some young idiot that probably sucked somebody's dick gets promoted to a new position>doesn't know fuck shit, but he's convinced he knows what he's doing and starts changing everything he can get his hands on>everything under him gets markedly worse immediately, nothing works correctly, nobody likes him>gets fired after a monthPlease, it's supposed to be science FICTION.
>>94273392nepobaby getting fired is fictional
>>94273402This.
>>94273092>worm cultI wish that book was canon. But alas, Deutsche.
How would Clanners view the RotS Tripod mechs? Would they be inclined to use them if captured?
>>94273596They would probably be turned off by the fact they use multiple pilots.
>>94273596Clan Wolf fielded captured Ares mechs with bondsmen crews in the ilClan trial against the Falcons, and the Triskelion is in the Sea Fox and New Smoke Jaguar MUL. But their not being solo machines makes them aa distasteful as tanks.
Did I do okay here? I’m not sure why, but something about the jaguar spots feels wrong to me. Am I just overthinking it?
>>94273614Looks fine to me.
>>94273606Tripods used by bondsmen is a great idea, thanks>>94273614Maybe a little more white/cream in some of the black dots, but other than they look good. I can tell that it's Smoke Jags just fine.
>>94273606>>94273596>>94273654Thought: A Triskelion that's crewed by an ex-fidelis Smoke Jaguar warrior and an ex-RAF bondsman could be interesting.
>>94273606>>94273654>bondsmenSorta. The Wolves went though a mass cord-cutting prior to the trial, since it was about as all-hands as the Clans get. The Ares was the same mech the crew had been using when they got bonded.
What's the theme for kuritan mechs and their variants?I know for liao its weird tech like stealth armor and plasma and for some reason flamers. Davion dumps ammos for armor and heat sinks. But what are kuritan mechs like?
>>94273768katanas folded six million times and ppc's
Why were Perez and Wimmer so against taking Yuichi as a bondsman? Is it just Smoke Jaguar disrespect for freebirths or is it not proper for a newish mechwarrior like Ezra to take one so early?
>>94273776In canon the Jags forbade freebirths from serving in the warrior caste at all. The game takes a lot of liberties with canon or makes outright errors. Yuichi getting into the Warrior caste is one of them but for the story they are telling it works well enough that I don't really care. Computer games aren't BT canon.
>>94273768PpcsFast mechs
>>94273776They suspected him of being gay and only taking Yuichi for his ass
>>94273776>>94273784To expand, the purpose of taking a bondsman is to induct him into the warrior caste once he has demonstrated that he can fit into the Clan. It is not simple slave-taking, it is recruitment. Hence, the Smoke Jaguars' absolute disgust at the concept of freeborn warriors would generally preclude the taking of one as a bondsman. I do not know if there was an established protocol for what to do if someone takes a bondsman his superiors take umbrage to.
>>94273807>I do not know if there was an established protocol for what to do if someone takes a bondsman his superiors take umbrage to.Could they just initiate a Trial of Possession for the offending bondsman, then execute said bondsman for any perceived infraction?
>>94273768Steiner wants HUGE mechsKurita wants light or heavy mechs with PPCs, preferrably in C3 networksDavion wants lots of medium mechs with autocannonsLiao wants budget production mechs to deliver burninationSo what does Marik want?
>>94273855>So what does Marik want?8 points of damage. The perfect Marik mech has nothing but large lasers and light gauss rifles.
Hey so I'm new and I'm trying to understand different components and equipment. I'm curious about Ferro-Fibrous are because I don't get how it works. Is it just lighter than Standard? Does it offer as much protection as Standard? If so, what's the exchange rate?
>>94273886Ferro Fibrous provides the same maximum protection as Standard armor, but it's lighter for the same protection. The exchange is that it takes up bulk - "Ferro Fibrous" slots in a mech take up space when building it, and for critical hit purposes they work like "roll again" slots. On lighter mechs where they can't really pack criticals anyway, this isn't an issue, but when you're loading up an assault mech with loads of gauss rifles or autocannons and an XL engine, running out of slots is a genuine concern.
>>94273902So it provides the same amount of protection as the equivalent amount of Standard Armor? Does Endo Steel function the same way?
>>94273614Do the lighter colored middle of the spots first and then partially surround them with the darker color using a brush with a good point. It takes a bit longer but not as much as you'd think.
>>94273913It provides more protection for the same weight as standard armor. 10 tons of standard gets you 160 points. 10 tons of ferro gets you ~180 points (can't remember how the rounding works this week).Endo is different. It's exactly the same as normal internal structure, but weighs half as much, in exchange for using up yet more critical slots.
>>94273913It provides the same max protection but more protection per ton. But if you've got a mech with 10 tons of armor and several free critical slots, swapping it to ferro-fibrous armor lets you put 10 tons of FF on instead, and that'll have more protection than 10 tons of standard. On the other hand, you still have the same max protection per frame. So if you're already maxed out at 19.5 tons of standard armor on your Atlasand swap it to FF, you have the same number of armor dots, but you've freed up some tonnage.
>>94273928>>94273932And by points you mean the little dots on the armor section of the record sheet, right? Does 10 tons of Ferro give you more protection than 11 tons of Standard?
>>94273964yes. regular armor provided 16 armor points per ton. inner sphere ferro fib provides 12% more, 17.92, armor points per ton. the maximum amount of armor points a unit can have, which is based on its tonnage, remains the same.
>>94271824NOOOOOO YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE FUN! STOP HAVING FUN! REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
>>94273992And Sarna says that Clan Ferro gives you 20% more, so that would be 19 points of armor per ton, rounding down, right?

So, I'm pretty new and trying to get into Battletech more seriously after a decade or so of casually playing Megamek and the videogames on and off. Anyone more experienced know what the real use case for ballistics are? I love autocannons on my big robots, but I can't seem to get them to work in BT. They're just usually too heavy, and too explosive in my experience.

>>94275978Because they relate to being loudly screeching retards in ridiculous outfits.

>>94275972A lot of autocannons are subpar or outright bad. Rotary, light, lbx are better. But the best ballistics are gauss rifles.
How big was the BT scale hex tile/base again? Not sure whether I should get the 30mm base or 40mm one
>>94275972Davionshitters will monger their excuses, because cope is all they're good for, but the autocannon was just what everyone settled for using when gauss technology slipped out of the tech base between the SLDF Exodus and Helm core discovery.
>>94275972Special ammo helps autocannons a lot. Precision ammo basically turns ACs into pulse lasers, caseless ammo can help fix the designs that only packed one ton and have ammo issues, flak shoots down planes and mauls infantry, and armor-piercing can take already good shots and TAC right through a fresh mech if you line it up. LBX autocannons also benefit from being able to pull double-duty, the bigger ones being a solid hole-puncher weapon and a critseeker weapon rolled into one.
>>94271968Go Taco or go home!

>>94276066Any fusion-powered units you have with precision AC/10s on them should be refitted with Large X-Pulse Lasers whenever they're available. Even on a tank the first LXPL is 7+4 sinks vs 12+2 ammo bins for the first AC/10.

>>94276816>>94276684Yeah, lasers are still better, especially in DHS times, but we’ve known this forever. Unless you’re doing custom builds on every chassis, lots of good mechs mount ballistics and you’ll probably end up taking some anyway, so you might as well use the special ammo and get some more mileage out of your heaviest guns.
>>94276790There's also the compulsion to make them relevant to the current era despite in any way
Wouldn't energy weapons be superior in in-universe logistical sense than the ballistics?

>>94276839It's just so baffling that ballistics are so...not worth it. I really think they shouldnt take up so much space or weight. It's way too much.
>>94277102I think closing the gap between ballistics and lasers without messing with tonnage or slots would take a lot of work, but you might be able to come close. Giving ACs an inherent bonus to crits, allowing double-taps on regular ACs, un-jamming UACs, maybe more special ammunition, etc. The problem is always going to remain that ammo explosions kill you dead and remove your guns if you DID have CASE, so you’re ultimately more fragile than an energy boat. The thing to do then would be to lean into the offense over defense thing, and make ACs horrifyingly dangerous to both you (explosions, big crit slots) and your enemy (big damage, more crits) over the more conservative option that lasers would offer.
>>94277102Solaris rules balances out weapons a fair bit. Ballistics would often be firing at least twice per turn at CBT scale and only medium lasers and small lasers would get to fire twice per turn. The AC/2 and machineguns get to fire four times, making them a lot more viable.

>>94277522Imo, ACs ought not to have a Min range unless they're firing something like a Sabot, that requires it. AC5 is, in universe, cheaper, easier to repair, easier to make, and have hundreds of thousands of them in various makes, models, calibers, etc. it's because of that they're still in use
>>94277259Army Painter Mouldy Clothes because my store was out of every version of Goblin Green and that was my closest equivalent.
>>942774835s and 2s also suffer from the 'enemy ignores them' phenomenon, which makes a Jagermech worth more than you think against some players since they'll simply ignore it standing there all guns blazing. The AC2 is good on hovetanks and the Warrior.
>>94277522AC5 is intended to be paired with a single PPC. Same range profile but almost no heat. It doesn't compare favorably with LRMs as an offhand weapon, though. Edge use even in SW play is loading flak, which VTOLs, hovertanks, and infantry all don't love.
LAC/5 is a LPPC competitor, heavier but more accurate.
>>94277627If given the opportunity, always swap your AC5s for LAC5s.
>>94277631I like the BJ that swaps its AC2sfor lac/5s.
>>94277552> youtube.com/watch?v=SI5bkZcgvP0
>>94277522>What the FUCK is the AC5 for?Pretty much nothing. There is a reason why it's like that: AC/5 is the original autocannon from the first edition of the game (back when it was still called BattleDroids, before George Lucas threatened to sue FASA for using the term "droid"), where the rules worked slightly differently and there were no such thing as in-engine heat sinks. That means that every heat sink you had took up a crit slot, making heat-efficiency more valuable. AC/5 weights about as much as a PPC (1 ton more if you include a ton of ammo), has the same range-bands, but does half the damage for 10 % of the heat. Back when heat sinks mattered more that might have been an OK tradeoff, at least if you intended to carry multiples of them as you'd quickly run out of critslots for all the heat sinks, though even then it wouldn't have been optimal. The introduction of in-engine sinks means there's basically no reason to take an AC/5 over a PPC unless your mech could theoretically fit another PPC but runs too hot to use it (as with the Marauder), and even then you'd have better options.
>>94277676Why did they never update the rules to make it useful
What are some good pre invasion mook mechs? I'm trying to put together a list for when I'm GMing. Specifically mechs that are underarmored and have explosive components. Mechs that seem threatening. I'm thinking Centurion, rifleman, cyclops for thinly armored but well armed. Maybe the Banshee for the other side, big and heavy and hard to kill but will struggle to quickly kill lighter mechs.
>>94277696They don't make any rule changes that change record sheets.
I'm currently in a campaign on a desert world giving air support with a bunch of aerospace fighters and some helicopters. Are there any helicopters that can take flamers? I wanna swarm a mech like bees and overheat it.
>>94277698>Specifically mechs that are underarmored and have explosive components. Mechs that seem threatening.CrusaderQuickdrawDragonDervish
>shipping for the kickstarter is 300 dollars
>>94277710In this case they had to change record sheets anyway, to remove the heat sinks that got moved inside the engine (Battledroids Marauder used to actually be very well crit-packed, with side torsos full of heat sinks, but removal of them left it with one torso location that contains nothing but ammo), so they could have adjusted the damage of the autocannon to compensate for the reduced importance of heat-efficiency while they were at it. Likely they didn't think of it at the time (it's not like the game was rigorously playtested), and by the time it became clear the low-class ACs are overweight for what they do it was too late to change anything without invalidating record sheets (they did later introduce light AC 2 and 5, which are pretty much the fixed versions, but obviously that won't benefit older mech variants).
>>94277663I know what I like.Angry women in giant Mechs.
>>94277794Try living in a first world country
>>94277806Even those don't seem particularly great, because another big trade off besides weight is the risk ammo carries as well. Shaving off 3 tons from each definitely helps but still doesn't seem competitive to me.
>>94277867LACs are revolutionary as field guns and neatly fill a gap in the options available to lightweight combustion-powered vehicles.

>>94277522>What the FUCK is the AC5 for?The Draconis Combine exists, so the AC5 must exist.
>>94277696Because lasers are more scifi than autocannons.
>>94277522>Ac10 is a colder ppcHold on now, an AC/10 with two tons of ammo weighs as much and makes as much heat as a PPC with seven heat sinks.
>>94278036Wait wtf is the point of the AC10 then? Is the ppc a straight upgrade?
>>94278101Energy weapons have always been better than ballistics. Even more so since DHS are wide spread again.
>>94277483>The 5s and 2s are kinda useless,RAC/2 is okay for 'mechs who have the tonnage for a critseeker but can't quite manage an LB10. If you think of the RAC2 as a really long ranged SRM6 it becomes more sensible. Agreed otherwise on stock autocannons tho, it's very hard to use them now outside of flavor.>>94277696>Why did they never update the rules to make it usefulBecause it would change introductory 'mechs and balance so heavily back in 91-92, and as other anons mentioned they were put to paper when the game still hadn't been playtested enough. By the time they could be edited, the game had been out for 6-8+ years.>>94277951>LACs are revolutionary as field guns and neatly fill a gap in the options available to lightweight combustion-powered vehicles.This. Infantry LAC5 field guns firing with precision rounds is probably the best overall field gun choice, sure you'll only have 10 rounds but it'll mean they can threaten PSRs on nearly everything.
>>94278101AC10s get mogged by LBX10s, yes. They're still fun on meme machines like the Hammerhands with its four tons of ammo that help it maximize its use of special loads.
>>94278101>Wait wtf is the point of the AC10 then? Is the ppc a straight upgrade?Depends on era. If you're introductory, a PPC is *overall* better but the AC/10 mixes well with large lasers/binary cannons ect. on 'mechs who otherwise can have their heat capacity taken up by other guns. It's always a question of "What's the 'mechs use case" and "what else will go with it in this range band?"Once you hit DHS world tho? PPCs are absolutely better, unless you NEED specialty rounds to deal with problems. I'd say even by 3050 the stock AC/10 is almost completely obsolete, even armor piercing munitions only crit on a 10+; but then you're giving up a full ton of ammo, which can hurt.
>>94278101The only advantage an AC/10 has is no minimum range. ER PPCs need another five heat sinks to solve the minimum range, but then you have DHS so the built in ones are more than enough unless you've got other high heat weapons and it's up against LB/X-10 and UAC/10 so the comparisons become more complicated.
>>94278171Frankly with 30+ years of hindsight, the star league would have made more sense going UAC/10 and LB5, not the opposite way. Then you could have had AC5s being in their supporting roles as excellent ranged critseekers and anti-air while the UAC/10s suddenly become like AC/20 replacements with double the range, a hell of a sell and upgrade for star league mechs.
>>94278185Until the damn thing jams. LB-20X is the best investment anyway, it basically obsoletes SRMs for bigger units.
>>94277951It does seem like it's pretty much an upgrade from the AC/5. A bit of range loss but not much, and in exchange you save almost have the tonnage, a crit slot, and no minimum range. Seems like light autocannons should be the direction to take AC development in universe.
>>94277974I want to give the Mariana fifty of these.
>>94278275Marians.*
>>94278227Well in fairness, miniaturization with only slight downsides in range is basically objectively better in terms of real world capability too. Imagine a medium laser with only 2 hexes less range but it only weighed a half ton.

The quick and dirty fix is for AC/5s to be burst 2 and AC/2s to be burst 3. No change to record sheets.
>>94278416I'd go burst 3 and burst 4, respectively. That way Marauder's AC/5 actually matches its fluff, and AC/2s put up walls of lead but chew through ammo to make that happen.
>>94278416Cluster, or burst? If you’re forced to roll on the cluster table then you’re massively bogging down one of the simpler weapons, but if you use the MG array rules where everything still hits one location for x damage, it keeps things relatively light on dice and makes a head hit from an AC2 legitimately scary (three pilot hits and consciousness checks in one go). This thread does give me some ideas for interesting house rules to try out sometime.
>>94278416I would greatly prefer changing the record sheets just a little. Drop the AC/2 and AC/5 to 5 and 7 tons each, respectively, and they'll still suck.A lot. But, they'd be much more neatly interchangeable for expedient field repairs or any other modifications you might like to do. Nobody will struggle to find another use for one or two tons on any AC-equipped 'Mech: Some more armour, an extra heatsink or ML, a full set of Jump Jets, etc. Small adjustments won't take long at all.
>>94278486But then every mech that has them is underweight or you need to figure out what to fill that tonnage with for every single one.

>>94279605I do. Not the stock one if I can help it though. It's like a worse Dragon, and that's no place for a mech to be.Pretty much all of its variants are significant upgrades except maybe the 5ME, which is a weird corner case unit that can only really be good with a pilot decked out in sniper style SPAs.
>>94279793What the fuck is the story behind this image?
>>94279896The Cincinnati group actually used the nuke rules.
>>94279732>>94279781You...you do know who you're talking about right? That's not a solo game. Megamek is being used as campaign management software for an IRL group of like 15 people. NEA's the <GM>.
>>94279896When NEA posts MekHQ screenshots, it's usually not a solo game, he uses it to generate missions for his IRL group. This was back in '22, when a simple recon mission into old Aurigan space led to them stumbling across the WoB digging up the wreck of a DropShip of unknown configuration. They... did not take kindly to being disturbed.

>>94279943If you don't like being a massive Mary Sue, then no, it's not. Because your unit will be one by the time the game inevitably refuses to load save files due to bloat. If you enjoy __fun__, then yeah, it actually is, if you can't find any IRL people to play with.

>>94280332It's a Wednesday afternoon. Folk are still at work.
>>94280332There are threads from weeks ago in the catalog. Your expectations have been skewed by other boards.
>>94280368>>94280394I remember it being faster 3 years ago
>>94280397Faster isn't necessarily better. But also a 4chan thread with ~50 people max isn't a good indicator of the game's health given there were 25,000+ kickstarter backers. We're a very small slice of the pie.

So do ya'll trust MUL to tell you what factions have access to what mechs, or do you have a different source you go to?
>>94280807MUL is the best we've got, but if I want to give a mech to someone that doesn't have it according to MUL, I just do it anyway. Hence why my Dawn Guards(davion) are getting a Triskelion. Easy to justify, plenty of ex-Republic in the Dawn Guards
>>94280819"They salvaged it."
>>94279675By slaughtering every single frontline galaxy in Clan Jade Falcon and consolidating the ~200 survivors into the Third Star League Black Watch, no less.
>>94280807MUL is way too restrictive. It's silly to pretend C class refits can remain exclusive for hundreds of years.
>>94280846Most of a MechTech's job is essentially improv comedy. The idea of standard variants remaining standard is somewhat silly in itself.
>>94280807I treat the MUL as mostly a production year resource. For extinctions and exclusivity I try to check other sources, and for commonality and presence I try to check RATs or other publications.I think what's most important to remember about the RATs for variants is that there's nothing keeping a mechtek with a handle of vodka from building 'future' variants or customs with enough time and effort, but they are by definition then customs and inappropriate for canon restricted games. Nothing came off the line like that, so if I get to crack open the TechManual, so does my opponent.
>400 american dollars in shipping
What are rules you use with list building?MUL + one mech from an adjacent faction?
>>94280900If it's present within the theatre it's fair game.
I pick who goes where in the painting phase, and it's usually just driven by lore followed by what I think is cool, and what the unit needs for gameplay is a distant third. Then I assemble lances out of my already painted models
>>94280777Reading is for fags. Real men know things.
>>94280872What sources do you check for extinctions and exclusivity if you don't mind me asking?
>>94280889>£7000 in shipping
>>94280927I usually pop open Sarna first to see if there's an explanation for MUL's extinct listing (if it's just eyeballing). If the exact years matter, I check Megameklab. If I had a library of proper books I'd probably go to the TROs first.
>>94280846MUL only shows what's in regular service or explicitly mentioned somewhere. If it's not on MUL, then it's not in the normal supply chain and it also has not appeared in a piece of canonical fiction for that faction. That's why it's not super reliable, all it takes to get on it is for some author to put a single example in a story. A mech that that faction churns out by the dozen is equal on the MUL to a mech that only one pilot with a special backstory for it has.
>>94280913Shut up, digitlet.
>5 zxxivkslllkks in product teleportation
>>94280965And on the flip side, a mech not being on there doesn't mean there are literally zero of them, only that no story has shown it and the central logistical organization of that faction is not issuing that unit or its parts. If you have one, it's your own problem to keep running.
>>94280927I check the clan wolf kill list because they put every one of those motherfuckas on the ENDANGERED AND EXTINCT MECH LIST
How should I paint my Shilone? Kuritan aerospace assets go through the Navy, so they don't share an identity with ground forces and shouldn't share a color scheme with my mechs.
>>94281010I dont know
>>94280905What about a king crab in 3050 in canopus?
>>94281024Could justify it as being the one that Victoria Espinosa piloted. It was canonically salvaged by the Aurigans(House Arano sourcebook, this is why you can't salvage it in game) and could have been sold or lost to the Canopians at some point during or after the Coalition's collapse.
>>94281024Stealing it sounds like a fun mission objective.
>>94281024I can see them having a bunch of old ass mechs
>>94280747Same I'm slated for wave 3 and my backer number is 401
>>94281024The King Crab is actually a good example of the vagaries of MUL. We know there's less than a dozen of them left outside of Comstar, but they're just listed as IS General. Any faction in the IS could have one, but the lore accurate distribution is much more restrictive than that implies.
>>94281010I don't think it would be inappropriate to paint them in the colors of a regiment they're attached to for a long period of time. Camospecs has aerospace assets painted in regimental schemes. Otherwise, just paint them in the red of the Kuritan fleet assets, or camo.

Luckily, sarna and MUL both list their sources and their pages, so you can easily figure out what goes where.
>>94280807I read the original TRO's and sourcebooks. They're much more informative on what is more or less common. Like everyone has Hunchbacks but Kurita hoards them specifically in the 3rd War.

>>94280965>>94280990MUL doesn't go by what's been shown in fiction it goes by what's been listed on the various RATs. That's why you have something like the Widowmaker Direwolf available to various factions instead of being just "unique"
>>94282011What's stopping someone from copying her setup?
>>94282011The Dire Wolf is a little bit different because it's an OmniMech. You can do whatever the fuck you want with those, that's the whole point of them.
>>94277552The fedsuns liason is the superior brown woman; Kamea and her cousin have scars on their faces. Also Kamea is yellow.
>>94281296What greens you using to make those jade falcons?
>>94282257If that's the case then VSD's Prometheus would also fall into that category but it has the "unique" tag. The only reason Widowmaker is not unique, barring being on a RAT, is because of >>94282236 with the Clanners copying the design to "honor her".
