Santa arrived yesterday, I’m way too impatient to wait for Christmas so I opened it already. France Anon, this is such a nice gift, I'm very grateful! You might've gotten the holidays mixed up a bit though :^) I like KDM minis a lot so getting one in bigger scale is an absolute treat. I'm probably going to paint her up soon since I want a palate cleanser from all the gw stuff I've been doing lately. I don't know if you're psychic or something but Sicarians are one of the few Admech kits that I actually don't have yet so it works perfectly! The objective markers are incredibly cute too, the /wip/ pumpkin must be my favorite. I've never had a chance to try colorshift paints so I'm excited for those as well, the results I’ve seen online are very cool. Definetely going to use the frogs for some jungle and forest bases. I've already tried the sweets, both the cookies and the jelly bars are really good. I actually ate most of the cookies in one sitting lol. Thank you very much! Merry Christmas and I hope your SS gift will be as on point as this one was.

I primed with white and then zenithal'd with grey. No black. Is that a mistake? Does it become too light? I just heard some advice when you use speed paints that if there's too much black the colors become too glossy. I think the green skin so far is pretty good and I'm not done with shading.

Take a little of a plastic cement and just rub it around. Plastic cement will smooth it out.
Tamiya Extra Thin is a golden standard, but I have found out that Mr. Cement S is a bit gentler, if you need it to use for those REALLY delicate things.

>>94592266
Resin? Little bit of fine grit sand paper rolled into a cone, press it into the hole and gently spin to sand the edges.
>>
>>94591989
Yes. And a decidedly shite one at that if it's still anything like the bottle I got a number of years back. Get Ultimate Primer (aka Sty-nul-rez) instead if you want to prime with acrylics.

No. It's vallejo's attempt at making something that would be able to serve as a primer in theory, but a failed experiment. It's not acrylic paint though.

airbrushed lacquers > rattle can (hobby/automotive) > rattle can hardware store
On acrylics, vallejo mecha primer is my recommendation, just give it a full 24 or 48 hours to cure. People like stynylrez, and proacryl's is probably also okay. They're just not as good as the above ones with actual adhesion properties, other than hardware store rattle cans which I don't recommend at all.
>>
>>94592394
I never left
>>
>>94592302
Sty-nyl-rez/Ultimate Primer if you want something that doesn't demand a gas mask and which you can clean out of (air)brush with water. Or if you want something even better to airbrush on and don't mind the gas mask then Mr Surfacer diluted with Mr Levelling Thinner. Or some rattlecan primer, I find that Tamiya, GW, and Mr Surfacer all work well here (which are all I've tried, so likely not at all an exhaustive list).

>Are only spray cans real primer?
As the name I've slapped on hopefully suggests I'm not the guy rambling about "real primer". Ignore those who do, or take a solidly nurgly shite right in their mouth, it's all their nonsense deserves. Worry about whether it works (does it adhere well to the mini, does it go on smooth and flat, can you sand it, and will your main paints work well on top of it), not if it satisfies some random grabass-needy kid's definition of primer.
>>
>>94592365
That will work as primer, vallejo primer is a combo acrylic polyurethane primer that can be a little gummy and clog airbrushes. The old formula was fucking shit out of an ass and probably what other anon had experience with, the newer stuff is better. If you're brushing it on thin it with a little water and make sure you do multiple thin coats giving it time to dry between them. This will help you get smooth results without filling in details. The primer may be a little splotchy after the second coat but it will work fine as a primer layer.

Other good primers are stynelrez, vallejo mecha primer, and proacryl (my current go to) are all fine. Rattlecan tamiya light grey is probably the nicest spraying light rattlecan primer on the market, but it costs as much as citadel for a smaller can.
>>
>>94592427
>The old formula was fucking shit out of an ass and probably what other anon had experience with
I bought the bottle back in 2016, so if they've changed after that then it was indeed the old stuff. Rubbery, unsandable, poorly adhering...
>>
>>94592425
>does it adhere well to the mini, does it go on smooth and flat, can you sand it
But this is the problem. You're settling on only lacquer and rattlecan primers working.
acrylics:
>don't adhere well, but do go on smooth, can sort of sand
whatever the fucking disgusting vallejo surface goop is:
>can't sand, doesn't adhere unless you count becoming a layer of plastic wrapas 'adhering' , does go on smooth though
rattlecans and lacquers:
>can sand, adheres very well to plastic/resin, great for sanding. Also cures to full hardness almost immediately, and thinner coats with better coverage.

I'm JUST SAYING, there's no contest IF you can use the better alternatives.

Afternoon, WIP.
The LGS is recently stocking this particular kind of super glue and I want to support the LGS.
Does the super glue work like a gel like gel advertised super glues? I work with a lot of resin miniatures and a good number of metal minis and I don't want super glue running everywhere if it is too thin so I assume the "extra thick" marking means it is gel based. Is this correct?
>>
>>94592504
I would think that 'extra thick' would mean something like that. You'll have to try it though.

But for metal models, or resin where gaps can be a concern, have you considered using 2 part epoxy adhesives? They're going to be better than super glue, even gel when it comes to gluing imperfect joints especially on metal.
>>
>>94592522
>I would think that 'extra thick' would mean something like that.
That's what I'm assuming too.
>You'll have to try it though
I guess I will. I'll report back if it hasn't sold out and the LGS can't restock due to Canadapost strike.
>But for metal models, or resin where gaps can be a concern, have you considered using 2 part epoxy adhesives?
I have considered 2 part epoxy adhesive, but stayed away due to the convenience of super glue. Though I am unsure if 2 part epoxy adhesive is stronger than CA glue. Some sources I've read say yes and others no and others say they're relatively the same.

I'll be honest if the adhesive strength of two-part epoxy then I'll stick with CA glue and fill in gaps with greenstuff. I need to practice with greenstuff anyways because I want to sculpt a mushroom with a face miniature.

What about BSI's "gap filling" CA glue. Anybody use that able to speak on its quality and behaviors compared to other CA glues?
>>
>>94592557
>I'll be honest if the adhesive strength of two-part epoxy then I'll stick with CA glue and fill in gaps with greenstuff.
Had a stroke I think.
I meant to say "I'll be honest if the adhesive strength of two-part epoxy is the same as CA glue then I'll stick with CA glue and fill in gaps with greenstuff."
My bad lads.
>>
>>94592425
>>94592427
>>94592467
Doing some research it seems that my only option is to use spray cans since lacquer is toxic and I'm not capable of doing that ventilation extraction thingy. Assuming I exclude vallejo surface primer or all the "air brush primer" brands that are acrylic and pretty shit. This is pretty confusing, I was planning to buy an air brush later on but I think I'll just pass
>>
>>94592610
>Doing some research it seems that my only option is to use spray cans since lacquer is toxic

No, primer schizo is schizoing. Primer doesn't need to be strong enough for you to be able to scratch it with a metal file or some shit, its just paint that dries with rougher texture to give the following layers something easier to grip to. There is some discussion about rattlecan primers "etching" the paint onto the plastic but its not truly necessary.
>>
>>94592467
Fuck off. As per above I've used a bunch of different primers. Good acrylic does lag behind the really good stuff, but not by a massive degree. So claiming it isn't real primer? You're a sad sack of shit, go flush yourself.

>>94592504
Squeezing a gel-style superglue out of that bottle seems like an arse and a half towards the end, so probably not quite that thick. Though it should of course be more viscous than standard superglue. By how much? However much the manufacturer thought it should be to deserve the "super thick" label. Try and find out, basically.

> I don't want super glue running everywhere
Put a drop of superglue down on some sacrificial surface (I put a bit of take on a bottle of solvent I keep around and use that), then use a toothpick or some such to take some superglue form that drop and onto the model.

>>94592563
Filling with green stuff seems like a good enough idea. CA supposedly really shines when the surfaces to be joined match up very well. That might also be why you get different claims for CA-vs-epoxy, as epoxy is supposedly better when you need to fill a bit of a gap, so which wins could vary from case to case.
But filling with epoxy putty (such as green stuff) and then gluing with CA should work as well.
>>
>>94592658
Aight lets be real tho... if it's not giving you brain damage, cancer, or a mixture of both, is it really that likely to be an effective medium?
>>
>>94592610
>since lacquer is toxic
Rattlecans aren't any better, so I hope the plan there is to use them outside. But that said, Ultimate Primer/Sty-nyl-rez isn't bad, it's entirely worthwhile to use if that's what's most convenient for you. Just ignore the schizo guy, he's not exactly being called that as a sign of endearment.
>>
>>94592658
So as long as I clean my airbrush well I can use whatever I want. Got it. Lacquer seems nice and all but is not an option if I have take precautions
>>
>>94592723
Rattlecans aren't a problem because I can spray outside easily. I can't airbrush outside, that's the issue. Just a shame ultimate primer and stnylrez isn't sold here

>inb4 base
I'll do it when I feel like it. It's more of a chore to me

I have 3 things I can work on now.
>7 mk3 imperial fist marines. all sprayed yellow and sloppily shaded waiting for cleanup and the other basecoats

>glottkin still being basecoated and shaded

>10 chaos cultist. 9 primed black and 1 partially basecoated

the glottkin has been backlogged for months, the fists look the best finished, the cultist are prob going to be the fastest and most fun since there are no rules and i can use contrast paints on all the fabric

Haven't posted any WIPs in a few days so figured it'd be a good chance to do a group photo of everything I'm working on now that I just got the last dudes primed.

Blood Rage dudes in the back and my Frostgrave warbands in the front. I'm slow as shit so this will take a while. I have like a month off starting next week though, so that should help.

Those 3 dorfs are 3D printed. From left to right:

Dorf crossbowman from Punga Miniatures Fortune Miners warband: https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-fortune-miners-warband-371959

Runemaster version 2 from Highland Miniatures Sons of Ymir: https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-dwarf-runemasters-highlands-miniatures-278237

Runepriest version 1 from Highland Miniatures Sons of Ymir: https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-dwarf-runepriests-highlands-miniatures-278235

Rest of the dorfs in the picture are more from the Punga Miniatures warband and there's a couple of old GW dorf warriors in there as well which are a fair bit smaller.

Probably glaze some reds on the skin on the knees, maybe the belly. The contrast in the fur is too high, but that's hard to fix. Fur diffuses light a lot. The face seems very shiny. The horns could use some highlights. The hooves and eyes are seemingly unpainted?
>>

Yeah different paints seperate at different speeds. Put a metal BB in the pot and shake before every use, that'll fix any issues.

don't use greenstuff, too expensive for this big of a crack.

Gotta do something about those nails, brah. And your cracked lid is making me anxious.

My biggest issue with it right now is the lack of contrast in the shading on the skin. Whatever wash you were doing there gave a decent starting place, but you should take that, and push it even further, and some volumetric shading on the downward facing areas would really make everything pop even more.

It's supposed to be an oxide effect, so it'll just add to it.
Jokes aside, no, get stainless steel ones. Or some people use pebbles I've heard.
Imo just shake it, it's not that hard. And yes it's normal for that paint to separate like that, some paints do that more than others.

As someone who does gundam modeling as well as miniatures I had mr surfacer just laying around, and began using it on my plastic miniatures about a year ago. But I paint the majority of my models as metal and I found it to be even less adhereing than acrylic primers like stynelrez or vallejo.

The best I found without explicitly being called a metal primer is tamiya spray cans but they're slightly hydrophobic. I hope to find a primer that is as tough and grippy as it one day that isn't hydrophobic.

Yeah you can get the same effect as washes by either layering from dark to light or using glazes. Like you start with a mid tone, then mix in a darker colour and add that into the recesses and mix in a lighter colour and highlight the edges with that. You can even use some dark inks in the shadows to really get it darker. I used a dark purple ink in the deepest parts of this guy's recesses for the first time and I like how it turned out. Actually looking at this photo, there's a lot more shadows and highlights I need to do before I add the OSL.

This stuff, it shrinks a little bit as it dries so it fills into small gaps nicely. The resin dries slightly soft with a little give so its easy to cut and trim once dry, and shouldn't shatter if dropped. Bought it years ago for somewhere around $10 - $15, I've used it on a ton of models and I still have half a tub left.

Recommend grabbing a short liner/script brush, I have a couple in size 1 and 0. Long thin brush that ends in a nice sharp point, you get the sharp tip of a size 0 but a much larger belly so paint won't dry in between the palette and the mini. Also makes it a little easier to get into details like eyes since the longer bristles means the ferrule won't be right in the way of what you want to see. I use the size 1's for my general highlights since I can get into tight areas and edge highlight with the side real easy, especially for metallics that I want to be neat with and not have to touch up again. They're also fantastic for washes and glazes in small areas or for pinwashing, the synthetics for mixed media/water colors run a couple bucks each so they aren't too expensive to try out.

Yeah, fair enough. I did try that fluo green on the blade as an experiment, but in the end it just looks out of place. Orange for the blade though is alright imo, because I like to color-code my infinity melees depending on their profile (basically how the box arts for different miniatures implied).

Has here ever mixed acrylic black ink to darken a metallic paint?
I tried it for the first time with pic related and for some reason I think I added too much black ink and made the metallic paint too watery.
It was pic related black ink and AK Interactive's gunmetal paint if I recall correctly.
I just want to know what the good average ratio of black ink to silvery metallic paint is for darkening those kinds of metallic paints if such a ratio exists.

Quick and dirty
>>
>>94597924
I gave up and just stuck to flat red. I'll make the wash a slightly colder color to make up for it.
while I'm here I'm going to leave a review for any prospective recast buyers:
I really wish I hadn't bought 20 space marines off SART. every single mini has at least one mold slip somewhere, and it's god awful on the chaos marines. these space marine heroes models aren't even expensive if you know where to look, I just got them like this because they offered a squad of 9 including the captain (which came out the worst, all the push fit holes were overflowed with resin). The legionaries all had at least one major slip, often on the legs, and had even more loose chunks of resin, some even uncured. It really would have been so much more worth it to just buy the ~60 dollar legionaries box from ebay or something. at least the Alpha Legion headhunter bits and kill team upgrade sprue came out pretty good, weirdly the kill team bits had a different finish which almost feels like plastic. would have been better if they stuck with whatever they did there for everything.
I'm going back to WTG for character models because in hindsight lieutenant tolmeron didn't come out that bad and I'm not spending 40 bucks on a kelermorph. character/single/OOP models and bits are probably as far as I'd go with recasts in the future.

Just really good paint jobs. Someone could imitate light with NMM or a mix of NMM and TMM. I honestly prefer well done TMM like on that horse though for the reason that got me. Being reflective, it can reflect light from all angles. NMM can only show light being reflected from one angle, so it can look weird from different angles.

Is there a good way to hide the slot in a base after the figure is glued in, that doesn't use sand/flock?
I've got a bunch of star wars minis from a printer, and I've based about half of them on 'outdoor' bases, but wanted some 'indoor' ones as well. Was wondering if there were an easy way that won't add a bunch of time/effort (like laying down and sanding a layer of greenstuff/clay would).
If not I'll just paint the base black and call it good.

Today I learned that it is possible for soil erosion sand to be "out of season" at multiple stores.
But I still needed a rougher-grained sand than what I already had, so I went to the pet store to look at aquarium sand to see if there was something between small gravel chunks and fine powder, but nothing quite at the right level.

Then I had a horrible idea.
Now I own 30 lbs of unscented, unused, unfundable kitty litter (they did not sell any smaller amounts)
I do not own a cat and am in fact allergic to them, so this had better work for basing.
>>
>>94599990
Oh brother, you're in Australia. Use ProxywargamingAus. If you want a custom print from them, you just buy the STL off MMF and send it to them. Although looks like minos is in WA, and Proxy is in NSW I think, so might take a bit longer to get there if you're also in WA. But yeah they are really quick for the quality they put out.

>>
>>94600036
Oh right, wait what was the shipping like on that? You had something printed from Australia. There must be loads of better options in the US. But yeah, you do you. If the shipping was free or cheap, then yeah you probably aren't gonna get anything cheaper than Etsy 3D printed stuff, so that's something. I'd just wouldn't be able to bring myself to paint something with visible lines like that. No matter how much effort you put in, they'd ruin it for me.

Almost there. Weirdly for once this is turning out exactly how I imagined it would look in my head. Just a few more layers going up into white and then some snowfall and that'll be done. But I can finish it another day.

Hmm, all large flat surfaces. Hell to paint without an airbrush.

Barely. Some sites offer parts, but they're often not generic enough.

Has anyone got any examples of painting grass on to textured bases instead of using Static grass? I'm unsure of how it might look but I've tried Static and just don't like using it.

Dude, I paint all my Gunplas and similar models with brush without issues. At some point considered getting airbrush but decided it's too much problem and my current setup with wet palette and trusty brushes is simply too comfortable for my desk and room.

As you can see, it turns out okay.

>character is going to be wearing white cloth over brown fur
Should I be adding brown to the shadows then? All the areas that are close to the fur.
I'm not sure how to do it without looking like I just fouled my white (using an airbrush)

I got a response on this pretty quickly
>You can get new sets of proper quality instead of those that arrived defective.
should I? I'm not sure

Screw the tilt then, just strap the stormshield on his back and call it a day. Need to make the Sgt surfing his storm shield off of a sick tactical rock Legolas style.
