I think its time to admit that the aesthetic of 40k has changed and mostly for the worse
changed to make it more appealing to a broader audience because line must go up

Does it at least have rules for Eldar by way of Necromunda? To play a team of Eldar lost in the Underhive would be viable. But too many xenos/non-gang factions and you're just playing Shadow War: Armageddon.
Not that that's a bad thing.

What about the old necron aesthetic was better exactly? Other than the green tubes.
What about the old imperial guard aesthetic was better exactly?
Tau are basically unchanged aesthetically (for the worse imo), but I'll agree with you because it's a shame that the shoulder mounted railgun broadside is gone. That shit was rad.

You don't like the sick underarm one like that one mech from gundam wing? I was converted my broadsides to be armed like that back when I was a kid.

Tau infantry are some of the best in the range yet. Crisis suits and broadsides are marginally lesser and hazard suits should never have been legends'd, that's it.

>>
>>94644924
>What about the old space marine aesthetic was better exactly?
NTA but, They had the baroque styling to them, and a lot of it was more akin to John Blanche vison of the universe which was just arguably better. Modern 40k tries to hard to be Tacticool and their armor looks to much like their sigmar line.
On top of that, Units models are way to busy for being just regular troops. They have to much bullshit on their model that normally was only reserved for characters. When everone is unique looking, no one is.
>Necros
Old crons did a better job at selling the idea of Mindless Zombie robots, again attributed to the above metnioned problem, troops are to fucking busy, and they are leaning way to hard into the Crazy green space energy alien bit
>Guard
Again, troops are way to fucking busy. THe whole point of them is they are meant to be nameless and faceless soldiers, I odnt mind head swaps though, but outta all of them, guard probably is the least issues of them. Though their tank and their heavy weapons look kinda lame and way to much going on again.

price wise but it's no 7th gameplaywise
>>
>>94645278
10th is not really that great. Anyone who got into the hobby around 8th will say its fine but they legit have never experienced peak 40k and trust me, 10th is VERY not that great compared to what the game used to be.

Basically GW is trying to make 40k a board game that pretends its a wargame, when in reality it used to be a wargame.

>>94645279
Price wise its dog shit, and rule wise its horse shit. Everything is milk toast bland and the same, unique nature of armies is stripped down to basically nothing all in GWs quest to "balance" the game.

Also ill die on this hill, 7th PRE angels of death supplement was actually pretty fucking good. it was not the kino time of 4th ed and 3.5e rule books, but it was still good.

Because salty whiners who’ve had to rebuy their army thanks to GW’s fairly anti-consumer policies want you to be as mad as they are. In all honesty it’s fine. The game has been simplified a lot and not necessarily for the better but if you’re new to things it makes it pretty easy for you to learn.

Unironically go to a different place or sooner or later you will become as jaded as the average poster here. People here will literally go out of their way to find shit to be angry, salty or disappointed about. 40k minis are very nice(with some obvious hiccups) and the game is okay if you're not taking it too seriously.
>>
>>94645256
>>94645367
Welcome to the hobby, don't let the spurgs here discourage you, it's in a really great place right now. Rules update frequently, models are the best they've ever been, and there's some really great narrative rule support in crusade games.

Of the three you're picking, it seems you really like painting red (assuming you're playing the giga chad tau that is farsight enclaves.) From a rules perspective two out of three there are "go fast, hit hard, die gloriously" and the third is "use actual fucking tactics to win," so you've got a good spread there.

If you have any questions, let us know newanon.

Because they have a comically meager amount of worlds, and because while they're at odds with the imperium, they're at least open to diplomacy and cooperation.

>>
>>94645212
>They had the baroque styling to them
Outside of like, SA I can't think of an equivalent unit that has notably more baroque styling, in fact primaris goes far further in this area some cases as you point out with your other criticism.
>They have to much bullshit on their model that normally was only reserved for characters.
Which directly opposes this criticism

>it was more akin to John Blanche vison of the universe which was just arguably better

>Old crons did a better job at selling the idea of Mindless Zombie robots, again attributed to the above metnioned problem, troops are to fucking busy, and they are leaning way to hard into the Crazy green space energy alien bit

Necrons definitely are, in two different flavors, no less. Team Imotekh wants to cure the galaxy of organic life, whereas team Szarekh wants to rule over the lesser races as a benevolent god... so he can use them as vessels to reverse biotransference. Of course, there are smaller dynasties who "just" want the organic kids to get off their lawn, but that's as wholesome as Necrons get. True, they do not want ask of the galaxy WHO WILL BE EATEN FIRST? like the Tyrands, or reduce it to a literal hellscape like the various powers of Chaos, but if those two threats become contained, make no mistake, the Necrons are very much cashing in the briefcase, so to speak.

>>94646388
RTS games were only popular with PC gamers because they were usually low specs so anyone with a family computer could play them, as soon as the bar to entry on consoles was lowered to the point that even poor kids could afford that generation's playstation or xbox people stopped caring and fps became the new hot genre, and PC became more about ever increasing specs and technical fidelity than ease of access. I have fond memories of playing age of empires 2 and dawn of war when I was young but if my family could have afforded a playstation or xbox I would have been playing that instead.
>>
>>94646388
Rts died because esports (and lan parties) died
Theres a few moba stragglers but its nowhere near its popularity on the 2010s
>>
>>94646430
>esports died
valorant/CS/every major fighting game's events still are the top viewed streams on every platform
>>
>>94646430
mobas killed rts kinda, very few people could stand up to the gooks in starcraft and that kind of just killed the genre in the west, mobas were really the killing blow because they offered everything rts offered but with less hassle and a similar multiplayer experience. Hell you could probably track everything bad that's happened with gaming back to dota and esports, it's even managed to infect 40k too for that matter.
>>
>>94646440
Esports teams are rampant tax dodge schemes and money laundering enterprises. The moment someone blows the whistle on the first one, we'll see a topple effect in the industry. The only legitimate events are the ones operating as grand tournaments with large prize pools at the end. A literal handful pebbles thrown into a sea.

Leman coming back as an eldar weaboo from studying in the black library and meeting Cegorach could be cool. Reflecting the irl vikings conversion to christianity from paganism. Subverts the meme of Gulliman having an eldar gf when Leman is actually rolling around with harlequins and has the same view of humanity as they do. We know Leman doesn;t view the Emperor as a god would be funny if he comes back spouting his dedication to an eldar god and how the Imperium would deal with that heresy. It would be a laugh

Chiming in late.

Genuinely, it was the variety afforded internally to a single squad of marines. You could have minor variance of the helmet, legs, torso, pack and shoulder pads of a standard mk7 marine.

That doesn't even account for other armour marks too.

A standard primaris squad is fundamentally to samey, with the biggest crime being the stadnardised torso decoration. More variety on that alone would go a long way to quell the sanitised look of primaris.

The new sternguard and company heroes prove how much it aids the overall appearance by having that minor variation.

having a small empire means their resources aren't nearly as stretched out across countless fronts at all times and can reinforce where needed and defend their territories effectively

they don't present the most immediate and pressing threat to others so they're often ignored by many large forces which are instead vitally committed to other tasks

and while they cannot come close to the most overpowered elements of many other factions or to their total galaxy-spanning strengths, they can and do match the forces the other factions can free to send their way

Maybe the Eldar and Necrons are “smarter”, but they’re also old news. The Eldar are in decline and the Necrons are either asleep or feuding over petty bullshit.

Wargear designated as special issue experimental in the 4e codex, for example, is now just regular wargear. A small example, yes, but also a good point to see what the theme of the Tau is. They’re willing to change, experiment, and try new things - and being new, they’re both exponentially growing and easy to underestimate, as rhe Damocles Crusade demonstrated.

>>
>>94647796
NTA but yes. The Imperium has always been described as tenuously and thinly spread across the galaxy, and the CRB pretty explicitly states that “borders” in the conventional sense don’t exist. The one million worlds is direct from the opening blurb and, although probably just a figure of speech, we don’t have any other number. Some faggot on YouTube spouting numbers and “””theories””” doesn’t change that.
>>

>>
>>94644898
You're correct, honestly. SM were a mix of tacticool (for some stuff) and baroque. Necrons were simple and foreboding, actual alien mysteries with the fluff to match (written from a very Imperial POV, as opposed to today where WHACKY DEMENTIA GRANDPA matches wits with KLEPTOMANIAC LIBRARIAN HERO). Tau was also pretty simple, yet elegant, rounded brutalism. IG was made by people who liked history, and treadheads through FW, and wanted that as either inspiration or, let's be honest, copy/paste (but it worked). These are just your four factions, too. The game is no longer a wargame, the factions are no longer really themselves. Instead of being made by people who like other things, they're made by people who like Warhammer. Or don't, depending on who you ask.

It's like how HH's distinctive style (and more in-depth special stuff in "1.0") of weathered and beaten, industrial output, military modeling (same for FW's stuff in general) is now just 'Eavy Metal team with SGS (they have their own, obviously). Even the models are 40kified now.

In some ways, Warhammer is unrecognizable to what made it really cool and somewhat, somewhat unique around 3rd edition when it started separating itself from [other]. Kind of sad.

The thing is, it's part of canon that the inhabited space is just islands in the darkness. The galaxy is three dimensions and a very, very, very big place. The Imperium doesn't have hard borders because you CAN'T have hard borders in such space.
So it's just a mish-mash of "I say we control this area of space" and others ignoring that.

I understand you’re trying to le epic numbers theorycrafting secondary thing, but have you ever actually opened a rule book and read the background section? Do you understand what the theme is (was)? It doesn’t really matter if one million marines is “too small” according to the calculations of FagotronHobbiesLoreVideos. It’s a round number. It’s cool. The Imperium is a vast web of colonies united by thin strands like faith and the tithe, and even then just barely. All the specifics are just in service to that overarching theme.

If you don’t mind resin, the Squats are surprisingly as deep when it comes to their range. They have a big vehicle in the Explorator, their basic box with around 7+ loadouts for basic squats, one generic champion, three named characters (vs Votann’s two) and have bikes announced to be released at a later date (I don’t think the Votann have their next models even announced) It wouldn’t be a balanced list probably, but once those bikes come out, it really could be done.
>>
>>94648225
I don't know about the pricing, but I know what some of the new ones coming out will have in them. For example we're getting a 2nd GSC combat patrol that's 20 neophytes, kellermorph, a golaith truck, and a magus.

>>94648247
It actually has some pretty sick rules, the command squad can order the horses to fall back and charge, and the kasrkin can shoot into combat with the horses.
>>
>>94644924
that model was purely brought down by proportioning. the shoulder mounts are way better
>>
>>94648257
I used to buy a fair amount of resin as a custodes player back in the day before Forge World was rolled into the main website and I can confidently say that I have no desire to work with it again. I'm not a LoV guy myself but I'd love to see a nice army of kitbashed necromunda squats some day.
>>
>>94648200
Yeah, it definitely looks unintentional in the way that it’s aged, if wanted it to be more decorative and not indicative of age purely you could go a little harder on the copper dry brush on the armor bits specifically.
>>
>>94648303
Yeah, the only plastic models right now are the basic squats, hopefully the bikes follow suit. Also the basic box does have a load out for a Squat leader that you probably get away with proxying as a character unit. Hell if you don’t mind crossing into TOW, Grimnyr can probably be replaced with a Runesmith depending on how the rules around his drones work.

Commorragh is a shifting meta-euclidian growth stretching across multiple webway nexi large enough to make stolen suns and random black hole surprises minor occurrences, so if you want to know what it looks like take a mycelial network, twist it through a non-euclidian fractal and line the entire thing with massive twisting towers with semi-deterministic height made of black wraithbone and you'll get a basic idea.

This is probably the single best description I have seen for Commorragh. Great way to visualise it
I wil l say though the stolen suns (Ilmaea) aren't their true size. They are surrounded by pocket dimensions that make them a fraction of their size and limit and heat and light that comes from them, like a corpse in a oubliette. So they're quite small and very close to the city. They're also all black suns, so think of that arena scene in Dune 2 but all of the city.

Hello bros, Tyranid newfag here again. I finished a Tyrant Guard I'm much happier with and was wondering if anyone had any advice on improvements. Aside from edge highlights. Even I can tell I'm shitting the bed there.

>>
>>94648553
The black on the carapace is a little thick. I'd suggest undercoating with the black contrast instead of a black traditional paint, it'll help keep your coverage smoother.
>>
>>94648571
Ah yeah, the matte black I use on the claws and hooves really does come out pretty thick. I don't have a black contrast, but I can try to thin it out a bit when I put it on. Thank you!
>>
>>94648553
So obviously you're correct, you can neaten up the edge highlights. The problem with black chitin is that the edge highlights are really going to make a more noticeable difference than other colors. You could practice some dry brushing to get some color on the edges to get at least something on there until you practice edge highlighting more. I'd recommend thinning your paints as the armor plates look in particular look too thick, tidying up whatever those orange spots are and/or do something more to break up the flat black areas, and look into making those front hands (hooves?) look a little less like raw chicken. Not bad for being a new painter and we all start somewhere. Have you been experimenting with color schemes or have you decided on this one?
>>
>>94648532
Reliably good units? Wardens.
Baller looking with questionable untility? Grav Bikes.
>>
>>94648574
Be very careful thinning black paint. It'll get really streaky if you're not. Hence suggesting the contrast. It really is worth it's weight, especially if you're doing it for a large portion of your models.
>>
>>94648565
If you want a more meta choice, listen to anon and get him wardens. If you want a more visually striking model that looks different than a variant of foot infantry for a new player, go with the jet bikes or that new shield captain model.
>>
>>94648576
I'm pretty well-set on the scheme, I've already gotten a 10-pack of Hormagaunts in it. I'm a big fan of purples, so I thought to slightly adjust the Leviathan standard with a light purple-ish skin tone rather than the pale cream and a dark plum carapace. The orange/pink spots are wounds in the carapace, supposed to reflect scoring and flesh beneath. I guess it doesn't come across too well.

I'll work on thinning the plum out more for the carapace, I can see what you mean on it being too thick as well. Thanks for the thoughtful advice, friend.

>>94648582
Ah, well I guess I have a purchase to make, then. Will do, appreciate it.
