What color would you prime a bunch of fleshy nurgle guys? I keep going back and forth on whether I want to do them with regular paint or contrasts. I'm not super skilled so contrasts might give a better result since I haven't done a lot of flesh/gore-y stuff before.
>>
>>94655259
>What color would you prime a bunch of fleshy nurgle guys?
White if doing contrasts, white or grey if not.
>>
>>94655266
Can you recommend a good white primer? Last time I tried to prime white with GW stuff it came out really gritty and ruined my models
>>
>>94655272
>Can you recommend a good white primer?
I haven't found any really *good* ones, only *acceptable* ones, and Citadel's White Scar is on that list. It's slightly better than Rustoleum's 2X, which so far has proven to be the price/performance leader at about $6.00 a can.

Neither one of them are as smooth as Wraithbone, but Wraithbone isn't white, either.
>>
Grange Over Sands anon, you apparently have to pick up your package and pay an import tax. I didn't know this, apologies

Question for people who have tried the slap chop method

does it combine well with stipple blending and or stipple weathering?

I could see
dry brush slap chop style
then stipple
then wash/speed paint turning out quite well

Prime them grey or black if you want the colors to be washed out and weak. Just prime them black or grey anyway and them drybrush or airbrush them with your desired undecoat color. off-white work well in my experience. Yellow goes great to break up the blues, greens, pink, and browns you see on nurgle guys

>>94655373
>>94655373

I bought a pot back last summer and it was actually really good. it seperates in the pot but it never dried out and it's very nice once you shake it up. Coverage is good too. Duncan even said so in his black templar video.

>>94655626
they raised tons of money and crushed the kickstarter goal a few times over IIRC.
It doesn't look bad. Some of their demon-cult guys look cool but it doesn't have the cemented recognizable aesthetic that other IP's such as WoW or 40k have yet. Hopefully it can build one soon and set itself apart from the many many minor wargames and challenge GW. Maybe then James will finally stop their shameless ever-growing kikery.

they are going to sell printed models and the STL's themselves it seems.

>woke
how so? Just don't paint them black or something idk

>>94655293
>>94655272
vallejo grey primer (the one in the cylindrical bottle) is fine. It's a very light grey akin to grey seer but honestly just get a bottle of Vallejo model color white or your white paint of choice and drybrush it all over and you wont notice a difference.

Tamiya also makes a great light grey primer like grey seer.
>>
>>94655610
you should have used the longhand for "slap-chop"
that is to say you should have explained in a full sentence what is essentially slap chop. The use of that word slap chop will attract people shitting on you cause the word reminds them of contrast paints and Sloptubers, which fall snugly under the category of things people hate in this general.

But to answer your question I really don't know. It honestly does not sound like anything radical or bold. I think if you watch some "grimdark" style tutorials you can see examples of people doing the same or similar things. It depends on your stipple color and your wash color and how they look over each other in relation to your basecoat
>>
>>94655626
it's extremely woke, the whole community is full of people who left Warhammer because it had too many "chuds" and their official discord was banning people who they suspected of being 40k fans, they also get really mad if you bring up Aztecs cause someone suggested including tribes from the Americas in the game and have the Aztecs be on the side of hell and it's apparently really offensive to think that a society obsessed with human sacrifice might be on the evil side
>>
>>94655703

Was browsing the previous thread and noticed "future proofing" basing. I guess it is by getting paint that will most likely get a close enough version of itself if the manufacturer goes out of business.
What staple paints do you all know will be copied?
I know most Citadel paints are gonna be copied that's for sure, but I'm not sure about everything else.

aztec sacrifice is cool and badass and their defining trait that sets them apart from other meso american/american tribes

the carved stone/astronomy theme is so cool that lizardmen appropriated it and it makes them cooler. "aztec dinos" are like a fantasy troupe now. Montezuma in Civ V is a warmongering conquest themed leader.

why are they trying to sanitize people who literally sacrificed captives atop structures and wore animal skins and chopped people up with obsidian swords?

It is verbotten to portray non-white people as "the bad guys" because you're racist if you do so.
>>
>>94655864
>as "the bad guys"

The real issue is that people can't get their head around non-21st-century morals and assume stuff like >>94655843 described automatically as bad.
>>
>>94655843
People hate on TC because chuds flooded their discord and they told them to fuck off. It's just butthurt that will be rationalized with whatever the flavor of the month is. I don't recall if TC has lore for the new world yet.
>>
>>94655891
>I don't recall if TC has lore for the new world yet.

They dont. But they rather ban people instead of encourage them to make up their own stuff.
>>
>>94655891
>rationalization
TC has "we love transgenders!!" in their discord description. I think it is you who are trying to rationalize a contrarian point of view.
>>
>>94655833
I mean if you fancy historical coloured paints, AK interactive basically gives away the alternatives to them through its equivalences to Vallejo, and I think AMMO basically is AK paints so they're more or less the same. So as far as I can say, I think Vallejo's acrylic paints that come in droppers will be mimicked by other companies focused on delivering acrylic paints to scale modelers. Whereas for fantasy and wargaming they will be mimicking Citadel paints.

yeah I couldn't understand what the justification for not having them was, kept seeing people say "they don't fit the aesthetic cause aztecs weren't technologically advanced enough for WW1 themed game" but neither are mediaeval crusaders hence why it's an alternate timeline so there is no reason why the Aztecs wouldn't advance aswell and their aesthetic can easily be adapted to WW1 level tech, had one of those idiots claiming the Aztecs were a nomadic people who lived in mud huts despite the fact the aztec capital had 4 times the population of London at the time it was found by the Spanish, and one retard who kept trying the stupid whataboutism argument of "if we have Aztecs why not have Vikings aswell" thinking it was a gotcha except the Viking culture had been almost completely absorbed into christiandom by the time the crusades started, the faggots in that thread couldn't even understand how linear time works lol
>>
>>94655891
they have some lore but that's what started the whole shitshow because some people started to suggest lore ideas about how the rest of the world had developed since the gates of hell opened and the whiney wokies who ran the server got mad about it and started banning people and then just started mass banning anyone they suspected was a Warhammer fan

I been using a size 8 synthetic brush for painting mini and for some reason it way better than size 1,2,3. The tip is just feel better and durable than small size brushes, is this normal?
>>
>>94656082
Yes. Bigger brushes have more body and hold onto moisture better. If it keeps the point well and you don't accidentally hit areas you didn't intend to, then using a bigger brush is perfectly valid

>except the Viking culture had been almost completely absorbed into christiandom by the time the crusades started

Almost, but not completely. If someone wants to make up his Pagan/Viking warband, why not?
The Northern Crusades were a thing, but if a literal door to hell opened, focus of the christian nations clearly lay elsewhere but some remote "vikings".

And with a time gap, with constant war against hell, spanning from Crusades to essentially WW1, basically everything is possible.

I am going to paint a Stormcast Eternal, one of those with a hammer. I think, instead of Primer, I am going to use gold on the entire mini and then just paint and see how it goes. Or would you recommend rather painting it all in grey as a "primer" and then paint as normal or maybe white?
I got literally every color under the sun, except black.

I use Liquitex satin varnish, then Army Painter matte varnish on anything non metallic. Only time I've ever had paint come off in ~5 years of this combo was when a guy at the shop had just repaired a broken model and still had superglue he didn't notice on one finger.

tamiya thin for plastic on plastic. You should always keep superglue on hand if you ever plan to use green stuff or resin bits/parts on your models. Superglue is also necessary to stick things onto your bases. Can't use tamiya plastic cement to put your space marine on a base covered in texture paint.

personally i use loctite glue and tamiya cement with the green cap. I've been printing a lot of shit too so superglue is my only option. once your tamiya bottle gets low, stick some leftover plastic and sprues in there and make sprue goo. comes in handy for filling gaps and holes. pic rel had it's mutant arm connected with sprue goo

freehand looks fine. can't tell what it's supposed to be or mean. definitely paint over that wash in the folds. your wash was too thin it seems and flowed into the cracks and dried there. next time wipe all the excess of your brush like you would a glaze and paint it in carefully and thinly in the cracks. be patient as it will take a few passes and wait for it to dry before doing another pass. that's what i did for this wizard and it came out really nice I think

Do the same thing for the khaki folds above and under the belt. any brown earthshade/strong tone will work nicely. wash the chainmail and boots too.

It's 2/3 painted, so I'm just gonna accept that the last third is primer only. I don't have enough time today to get more fully painted and varnished (painted isn't a problem, it's the "two stages of varnish at 24 hours of cure time each" that's a killer).

i recently bought a kit of hh marines to use as basis for chosen. this is the first time i've really gotten into kitbashing and it is a total blast just finding every random extra bit and doodad you've had lying around to make your own dudes. i made 10 wysyg chosen and making it wysyg oriented made it even more fun. this dude is my favorite - i've since added a large amount of grenades to his waist to make him even more unhinged

This. An airbrush can do two things basically: it speeds up priming and basecoating massively if you paint big armies at once.
That is not what you are after ofc, but it also allows you to do super neat colour transitions, OSL and other effects on single models that you might want for your collection.
Also priming and basecoating in super neat and even and thin layers is never a bad thing, even if you just do it on one guardsman or whatever at a time.

>>
>>94659489
GSW is not the best place to get anything. High prices and insane (45+ day) shipping that you get the privilege of paying for. Plus they're copyright trolls fucking with smaller businesses. Buy it anywhere else.
>>
>>94659535

GSW as a company does suck and their "discount" is shit unless you're in Europe. Getting GS and milliput from them is not a bad option if you buy a ton of stuff from them but if you're in the US, consider Hobby Lobby.

> mfw bought some resin bits from them

>>
>>94659489
I used hobby lobby and ebay respectively, you can find green stuff from a bunch of different manufacturers on amazon or ebay
>>
>>94659257
Glaze purple into the shadows for some visual interest and to contrast the yellow. If you have it mahogany as a base color can help since it leans a little purple/red.
>>
>>94659538
You don't need to be a schizo to think they're a shit company. There's plenty of evidence.
They sell a whole bunch of shit products, many of those are things nobody needs like that ridiculous brush wash station.
And sure you can ignore their bad business practices and still buy from them but there's simply no reason to, because you get all that stuff cheaper from somewhere else. If you don't care about where or who you buy from you might as well go with aliexpress, at least there the shipping is faster and it's cheaper. Quality is the about same.

We've been over this a thousand times anon. What part of "Eat your paint" don't you understand?
>>
>>94659813
What kind of paint are you using?
Different brands all need a different amount of thinner, so pick one brand and stick with it for a bit. It will take a while to learn but you will get the feel for it. If you want to avoid excessive disassembly, lean towards too much thinner; too little will clog your brush. Also, the distance between the tip and your mini will affect how much the paint dries before contact, so be aware of that too.
>>
>>94659813
What's your goal and purpose for the airbrushing?
Do you plan on doing the finishing and final blends with the airbrush or more the initial stages?
As a general guide Iine if you feel like priming or basecoating a miniature already feels overwhelming and like a but of a challenge then start on a piece of paper.
Draw lines, circles and spirals, paint a dot pattern.
Try to vary the thickness of the lines and the dots.
Change the pressure or the dilution of the paint and try again. See what difference it makes and try to find a setting that's comfortable and where you have good control.
Then you can either do more shapes or try a model again.

robe looks a bit too much like the metal bracers. they're both reading as grey. I would darken the robe then highlight with blue to break it up

also the wood of the staff is too similar to the rust on the blade and the armor. Go for a darker wood. think of the dark oak trees from minecraf. a dark chocolate colored wood would add more contrast.

kitbashing is indeed super fun. CSM allow for more of it cause they're canonically scavenging older parts and the books describe them as salvaging loyalist armor pieces while maintaining their millenia old pieces from the heresy days.

I turn a box of 10 legionaries into 5 chosen and 5 possessed and saved a lot of money. kitbashed some putrid blightking mutations with the legionaries to mark them as possessed and mutated. I bought the origianl chosen box and used the many leftover bits to spice them up and fit the loadout options. here >>94656435

Sorry you have to sift through broken glass because I was naive enough to think that was enough padding for framed artwork. Plastic glue with brush applicator for that area, scrape as much as you can and melt the rest with a tiny bit of the glue using the brush to smooth it out. Also works well for mould lines on knuckles and cables, or any area you want to he smooth.

You mean pearlescent? That actually would look cool, I’m gonna have to research if there’s some kind of process for that. I feel like I’ve seen it before on scale models, so at least it must be possible to mimic if not do outright
>>
>>94660532
>no space to scrape it out
You don’t have to scrape it out to flat spot, just scrape it down. Put the blade perpendicular to the mold line, use the tip where the blade is most narrow, and follow the entire line. Like other guy said, plastic cement is also good for smoothing out a surface if there’s any roughness or bumps since it works by dissolving the plastic.

>you will tell me how you shaded that ork skin
It's:
- AK Interactive Black Green (2 drops of AK thinner to get it quite thin)
- AK Interactive Frog Green (2 drops of thinner)
- Ork Flesh Contrast painted over the skin very lightly
- While it's wet, tissue away the Ork Flesh so it remains in the nooks and recesses ala a wash.
- Very lightly highlight Frog Green again.
- Pick out some deeper details with Warboss Green if you feel like it (I only did so on the arms)

I never really do ork skin the same way twice since I like variety and flexing my skill, but this is what I do for very vibrant ones like that nob. Pic related is just AK Deep Green over Black Green with Army Painter Green Shade wash.

the yellow kicks ass. I use AP hardened leather speed paint over a bone base, but for your scheme would say screw doing it as straight wood, make it a dark purple with some lavender highlights to contrast with the yellow and align with the base, then do the mushrooms growing from it in yellow to tie it together more.

If you think not buying a recast from some poor chink trying to make a couple extra bucks is going to change anything you're out of your mind

>Can I ask what your recipe is for the black metallic parts and highlighting?
Chaos Black base, AP Deep Grey highlight. The most exposed parts are just a few dots of Leadbelcher.
Metals are Leadbelcher with Vallejo Game Silver highlights, and AP Dark Tone wash.

It’s meh all around. Last I checked the rules were basically just upgrading one character to their max or loose and the setting itself is just an atheists parody of Christianity with nothing interesting going on. You’re better off ignoring it so it dies in a year when people don’t get their minis on time to go play quar or turnip

i can't speak for them but they are clandestine operations probably run by a couple guys in a garage, they can only have so many customers before they run out of production capacity, increasing that increases notoriety and risks wich could get the pinkertons to your garage if you know what i mean

word of mouth is more controlled and safer usually

that said there are several ones with public webpages that you can browse, so there are definetly recasters with a bigger infrastructure that MAY welcome new customers more openly
you can google 'warhammer recast' and get one as the first result

some can also be found on aliexpress by searching for 'resin miniatures' or similar keywords in there, but those may move shops around more often

I would recommend switching to silicone, it's not that much more difficult than blue stuff and will give you much better results. I use high strength 3 from alumilite and it's been quite good. Just make sure you watch a video on how to set up your vents and mold box correctly.
>>
>>94663906
But I heard that with silicone and resin, I would need to set up some sort of vacuum chamber to remove bubbles created during mixing and pouring.

be carefull to not create bubbles while kneading it, also apply gently on the most recessed parts and apply plenty pressure

>>94663986
ideally yes, there are some kinds of silicone and resin formulated for better flow to avoid the worst bubbles but its still recomended, you can get away without if you are careful enough
if you are only doing one-offs is not worth investing in resin imo but check this in any case

How big is the gap between some 12 dollar bamco/tamiya nippers and godhand nippers?
>>

About 28 dollars give or take. They do feel buttery smooth while cutting through sprues and leave little to no marks but it's definitely a luxury purchase.
>>
>>94664644
How do "decent" nippers feel in comparison? Trying to upgrade from what are basically wire cutters
>>
>>94664619
I have some knockoff God Hand clippers and they're fantastic, but I have a feeling they'll dull fairly quickly, so I don't use them often, just where the smooth/flush clip really matters for whatever reason. Most of the time I just use the same clippers I've had for years.
>>
>>94664652

>>
>>94664619
while they might feel nicer, for non gunpla purposes where you are going to gapfill, remove moldlines and paint the models it makes no difference in the end result since you are going to be sanding the modlines and stuff anyways and the plastic is grey
>>
>>94664652
You can feel the plastic crumple moreso than cut at first and there's a bit of a snap when it gives way, also you can't reliably get a flush cut without potentially gouging the model.

yeah really well, i dont like it for skin/faces though
i prefer just painting the whole face/skin parts white/magenta or whatever skin paint im using after a slap chop. but stippling in general is great for skin and faces
slap chop is a top tier base to build off of imo

if you want a grimshart style maybe
but if you want to just paint the mini with extra busy work for some reason, then do the retarded old 'wash the whole model then paint it again' method

I have tamiya sharp pointed side cutters and they're really nice compared to the army painter ones I was using before. Cuts are cleaner and require less cleanup. As >>94664679 said though, you will still have to do some work. Think of it that way, with good quality nippers you get marginally less work during the cleanup stage than you do with lower quality ones. You need to decide yourself if buying them is worth it for you

Godhand is made specifically for Gunpla where you want to avoid discolorating the plastic at cutting points/near parts. IMO they are way over the top for Warhammer or scale modeling

Just coming back into mini painting after an extended break and having wanted to come back for a while, was previously looking at updating my ancient paints (including some unopened Citadel from the 90s) to some Vallejo stuff, but I'm hearing that they stuffed up the formula on those so they're no longer nearly as nice?

It's not that I don't like them, they're useful as washes, glazes and for tinting metallics. Their initially marketed purpose of being a basecoat+wash in one coat, while technically true, has a lot of problems though. What I had biggest issues with were uneven/splotchy finish and the hassle needed to correct any mistakes. Maybe I'm garbage but I tried to make them work for a good couple months and was never fully satisfied so I eventually gave up. At this point I've stripped pretty much every miniature I painted using contrasts as basecoats.

hmmm yes first one i used was blood angels red
i dont know if they changed it but it was the worst fucking paint i'd ever used, and i used to paint with army painter paint. i mostly dry brushed with them though so thats not the best comparison, before the slap chop thing too.
baal red is my favorite now though, no idea where my blood angels red went to, and i dont care its a shit paint
also the contrast thinner (gw gives all of their mediums and varnishes stupid names i dont remember what its called) might help to stop that, as long as it doesnt pool anywhere

i kinda enjoy that part

AK Interactive or Army Painter Fanatic is probably what I would go with right now. Though I don't know if they are available in Australia (I'd assume they are). Vallejo's new stuff is still pretty good, some of the claims about reformulations are bs, but I do think the quality dipped a bit (for example the bubbles are more noticeable than on previous formulation).

Citadel paint is still good but the pots are bad.

For anyone with experience using both water based acrylic paints and acrylic lacquer paints, how significant are their differences in performance these days? Mainly for airbrushing of course since brush painting with solvent based paints is hot garbage.

NTA but yes. Haven't used it but lot of people seem to swear by it.
>>
>>94665631
>acrylic lacquer paints
You mean like Tamiya's acrylics and Gunze's Aqueous Mr Paint? Tamiya's stuff is really nice to airbrush, especially thinned with Mr Levelling Thinner. I've never quite cracked the code with Gunze, might be that it wants to go on kinda thick (well, relatively speaking at least) and then self-level out to a gloss and opaque car-style coat, so me trying to force it to go on as very thin and rather translucent layers on top of mottling/pre-shading might not have been the best idea. Still prefer them over Vallejo in the airbrush though.
Brush painting? Not if I have a choice (and that goes for both Tamiya and Gunze), though contrary to stuff like Mr Paint or Alclad2 it's at least possible.
>>
>>94665944
No, I mean lacquers, not solvent based acrylics. So Mr. Color, Gaianotes, etc.
>>
>>94665952
Dunno where the "acrylic" bit came from then. Oh well, all I've used there are Mr Paint and Alclad2. Love 'em. Just make sure to prime properly with something else first, because they're hot enough to be sued as plastic cement. Though ironically enough they themselves end up being very sensitive to solvents once applied, so be careful if you varnish them. Rattlecans are not recommended.
>>

>they DID stop making it

>>94665604
The most common ones at my FLGSes seem to be Scale 75, Vallejo and Green Stuff World, though Metro Hobbies in the CBD does seem to have Army Painter and AK. There's also Mr Hobby, seems to be a Japanese brand?

GSW seems to be heavily into technical paints.

I'd be mostly painting some Warhammer 40K stuff I've collected over the years, plus some dungeon terrain and characters, and later some mostly-metallic custom stuff I want to tinker with.

Come to think of it, who does the best metallics at the moment?
>>
>>94665979
Lacquers are still acrylic paints, but using stronger organic solvents and with stronger acrylic resins to match
>>
>>94665989
And "resin" is plastic, but in this hobby some words have taken on a slightly different meaning from what the chemist or materials engineer might think they mean. You'll find that you confuse people a lot less if you consider acrylics and lacquers to be separate things.
>>
>>94665983
>Come to think of it, who does the best metallics at the moment?
Outside of stuff you'd only want to put through an airbrush I'm happy enough with both GW and Scale 75, though not every single one from both is a clear winner.
>>
>>94665983
>Come to think of it, who does the best metallics at the moment?
Airbrush or brush, and water based or can you handle a little toxicity? Any specific colors you are looking for?
>>
>>94666026
Water based, only just bought an airbrush and I don't really feel confident putting metallics through it yet (rough little particles, right?), probably brushing and drybrushing for the foreseeable future. Steel, brass, copper, gold, silver and aluminium (if anyone even does aluminium).
>>
>>94665983

Those are all good, there is a bigger learning curve at the start with Scale 75 because their medium is differen. Also if you want easy coverage, it isn't the best paint for that. Vallejo is still good. I haven't used lots of Green Stuff World paints but based on the ones I have, I'd rank them above the old Army Painter Fanatic paints ( which were quite bad) but maybe a bit below Citadel, Vallejo, AK etc. But pretty good paints overall.

If you are returning to the hobby it doesn't matter that much what paints you go with at the beginning, basically all the brands you mentioned are at least decent. Though like I said the learning curve with Scale might be more punishing, many painters love that range ( though it also divides opinions).

Start with this and then search for reviews about other ranges not covered in the video

I beg to differ. Pic related is the newest mini posted by Duncan Rhodes. He's been painting for years. Painted thousands of miniatures. Was working for years around pro painters in GW.
But, he probably spent an hour or two painting the model. He didn't use subassemblies. He didn't meticulously highlight every edge while holding his breath and by using a miniature Windsor and Newtown brush. The best one he could find out of the 10 he bought just to get the one with the best point. Etc.
Now my next post will be from a guy who probably painted 0,01% or less minis in his life than Duncan, yet his results are at least 10x better, just because he employed the try hard techniques and spent probably a month or more on the miniature.
In this hobby the time you spend on a mini is everything. And try hard techniques are overpowered. You could paint a mini that looks better than Duncan's as your first or second mini, if you employ the try hard techniques, and if you spend a long time on it. In my opinion practice has little importance when it comes to the result.

There's a whole fucking galaxy of difference between spending 100k hours doing the same thing over and over and spending 100 hours doing actual practice. Duncan hit a plateau partially due to the limitations of his career and partially due to disinterest in improving, and I would agree in less hyperbolic terms that a fresh painter can do better in like a dozen hours of training with uncomfortable resistance than Duncan's done in over a decade but instructional videos are only a small part of that. They'll show you lots of cool tips and tricks, shortcuts, and cool stuff like that, but you can't learn brush control or build an intuitive understanding of color, light, and paint behavior from watching a video.
>>
>>94660965
Turbodork makes some colorshift paints, kinda similar what I've seen in the custom auto painting industry, where the paint changes color based on the angle you look at it. Word of warning, only buy their stuff in person after verifying that the pigment hasn't solidified on the bottom of the bottle. I got like 4 of them that are entirely useless since the pigments have come out of solution and dont want to mix again. Its a known issue and i have yet to find a way to rejuvenate them.
This actually makes me think of all the other neat effects that arent really used in mini painting like candy pearls and colored metallic flakes. Wonder where i can get some...

Reposting for the last time to check if there's anything else you guys recommend before I start designing things.

I'm going to build myself a little toolkit for my mandatory commonly-used tools for mini painting and gunpla over the holidays. What should I keep in there?
>2 hobby knives and some blades
>nippers
>handful of brushes
>tweezers
>pin vise and drill bits
>some sanding twigs and pads
>probably my raser and balancer for gunpla at least
>pockets for some qtips, skewers and toothpicks
>metal spatula and silicone shapers

What might I be missing that's important? I'll add some extra spaces for expansion and maybe sealed containers to keep some glue in, but this is mostly about the tools I use, not the paints and chemicals

>Duncan hit a plateau partially due to the limitations of his career and partially due to disinterest in improving
Duncan explicitly says that the paintjobs he shows publicly are deliberately selected to be achievable by noobs. It is a deliberate choice he makes due to his position as an educator and not the "plateau" of his actual painting skill.
He has worked as an army painter for GW for years, he is more than capable of using advanced techniques and achieving great results. You are missing the point.

Maybe I should rephrase the question as to not poison it with youtubers.

What I mean practicing art fundamentals like shading/colors/volumes/etc. in a 2d space rather than 3d to start. Not necessarily just watching tutorials.
Person A:
>newbie watches a video on highlighting/shading 3d volumes on a miniature, goes on to practice that - how long does it take them to achieve some benchmark for high-intermediate, or high level of quality in that
Person B:
>newbie learns about shading in 2d, practices that for some time, then moves on to mini painting. how long does it take them to achieve that same benchmark, and additionally how does their progression into advanced/expert level paint jobs compare to Person A's?

Obviously there's crossover in either direction, but I'm wondering if one is significantly more useful than the other even just in mini painting.

Another anon also suggested greenstuff. I don't know how many 'consumables' I want in this kit, if any. I think I'm going to leave some spots for miscellaneous small containers (tbd which ones I'll find) for holding things like greenstuff, or blue tack, or maybe some small superglue tubes, qtips/toothpicks, that kind of thing.

I bought one bottle to try on some lightning claws and it was absolutely dogshit. Fully admit that could be my fault, either via application or storage, but if there’s a way to do a get result with those paints idk how. My bottle is now chunky… like if pop rocks got wet, is that what you meant by separating?
>>
>>94666413
You’re overthinking it. The best kits are put together through experience, trial and error, and rearranging things as you go. I fully get the consumerism fun of obsessing over purchases and setups, but I’d really just get to work and change things later as you need

Obviously the guy painting tiny plastic men comes out ahead.
1. The theory is the same.
2. Painting a mini is very different to doing 2d illustration. A piece of paper is infinitely larger than a 1 inch figurine and you can't just set the layer blending mode to multiply in real life. The first guy has an advantage in mechanical skill.
3. Some things in 2d can't be replicated on a mini because a mini can be looked at from any angle.

Vallejo air metallics are the best, even painting on are better than anything, get a chrome or aluminium and it'll look like legit metal

Hello, I am finally at a point in my life where I have the time, physical space and money to be able to support getting into miniature painting. I have always been fascinated by these threads and wanted to get into the hobby.

I'm interested in painting fantasy figures primarily. Orcs, Elves, and typical TTRPG stuff.

Currently I have made space in my garage for a a nice desk with an LED lamp and I'm going shopping this weekend to make my first purchases of paints, brushes, etc.

What should I be looking for / avoid as a complete beginner?

Thank you for any input and your time, I appreciate it.

Like what? Skills or what models to recommend? Reaper minis have a wide affordable variety especially for fantasy stuff. They use a type of plastic they claim that are ready to paint that don't work well with spray primers and may require cleanup (sanding off moldlines) so keep that in mind.
>>
>>94667257
I suggest two options. Go to your local game shop, pick a box you like, and ask the sales person for advice what you need to assemble and paint. Probably a tools starter set, a paints starter set, a brush, and a primer.
Option two, watch the latest episode of paint perspective and they discuss some starting sets for $100 although there are some meme suggestions there.

>>
>>94667257
as a complete beginner get a start painting set the kind that comes with a handful of paints, brush ect
get a hobby knife
A can of black primer
Some models you like
plastic glue and super glue
use a old cup for water and a old plate for a palette
that's all you need and after you've painted those first models you will know what to get next
>>
>>94665396
>hmmm wait did you mean using the contrast paint to stipple blend?
More like
zenithal prime
over dry brush
contrast paint
stipple blend/weather

maybe filter or glaze over the top

usually the dry brush and contrast paint combo looks half finished, too pastel or powdery
but I imagine stipple weathering/blending would mask it whilst retaining all the highlights added

>What I had biggest issues with were uneven/splotchy finish and the hassle needed to correct any mistakes

I would argue with this Anon.
They (not only GW, also AP etc) market it as a one-coat-solution to get miniatures on the table fast.
If you care for "uneven/splotchy" finish or correction of mistakes, then you are not the main target audience already.
Those paints are a godsend for people that are really bad at painting, because a single coat of contrast/speed paint looks already better than their usual paintjobs, even if its splotchy or uneven at places (on some minis/textures more than on others). These people get better results pretty much "out of the pot".
Also its faster, so there the 2nd target group is the "i have no time, so i play with unpainted minis"-guys. For them, the one-coat-method also works.
Since you are posting in here, i assume you consider painting as your hobby just as much as playing with what you painted. So you are already more knowledable about paints and painting than the majority of wargaming "players".. and as you said: "they're useful as washes, glazes and for tinting metallics".

And considering all of those 3 things combined. i consider Contrast/SP/Xpress and all the other brands out there to be the single best innovation for our hobby for years. Because everyone will be able to get some kind of improvement for their hobby out of them, with very little investment of research or skill needed.

Thanks, Anon, noted!

Just saw my local hobby store, which I thought for years was mostly limited to IRL scale stuff and enamel paints, is apparently now stocking Vallejo and Scale75, so I might take a trip over there tomorrow.
