What color would you prime a bunch of fleshy nurgle guys? I keep going back and forth on whether I want to do them with regular paint or contrasts. I'm not super skilled so contrasts might give a better result since I haven't done a lot of flesh/gore-y stuff before.
>>94655259>What color would you prime a bunch of fleshy nurgle guys?White if doing contrasts, white or grey if not.
>>94655266Can you recommend a good white primer? Last time I tried to prime white with GW stuff it came out really gritty and ruined my models
>>94655272>Can you recommend a good white primer?I haven't found any really *good* ones, only *acceptable* ones, and Citadel's White Scar is on that list. It's slightly better than Rustoleum's 2X, which so far has proven to be the price/performance leader at about $6.00 a can.Neither one of them are as smooth as Wraithbone, but Wraithbone isn't white, either.
Grange Over Sands anon, you apparently have to pick up your package and pay an import tax. I didn't know this, apologies
>>94655293Could always just paint white over the primer as well
>>94655259I use black, then pink or dark dark red and layer up caucasian flesh tones
Question for people who have tried the slap chop methoddoes it combine well with stipple blending and or stipple weathering?I could seedry brush slap chop stylethen stipplethen wash/speed paint turning out quite well
What's the deal with this trench crusade shit? I've been away for a month and there's a general?Looks like a woke version of 40k mordheim
>>94655626the kickstarter with all the 'official' models just ended.
>>94655632Looks like a christcuck themed turnip28
>>94655637kinda, except its Christian in the same way evangelion is, wow cool religion" while "war dehumanises everyone the same no matter who you believe in, also wow cool religion"
>>94655259Prime them grey or black if you want the colors to be washed out and weak. Just prime them black or grey anyway and them drybrush or airbrush them with your desired undecoat color. off-white work well in my experience. Yellow goes great to break up the blues, greens, pink, and browns you see on nurgle guys>>94655373>>94655373I bought a pot back last summer and it was actually really good. it seperates in the pot but it never dried out and it's very nice once you shake it up. Coverage is good too. Duncan even said so in his black templar video.>>94655626they raised tons of money and crushed the kickstarter goal a few times over IIRC.It doesn't look bad. Some of their demon-cult guys look cool but it doesn't have the cemented recognizable aesthetic that other IP's such as WoW or 40k have yet. Hopefully it can build one soon and set itself apart from the many many minor wargames and challenge GW. Maybe then James will finally stop their shameless ever-growing kikery.they are going to sell printed models and the STL's themselves it seems.>wokehow so? Just don't paint them black or something idk>>94655293>>94655272vallejo grey primer (the one in the cylindrical bottle) is fine. It's a very light grey akin to grey seer but honestly just get a bottle of Vallejo model color white or your white paint of choice and drybrush it all over and you wont notice a difference.Tamiya also makes a great light grey primer like grey seer.
>>94655610you should have used the longhand for "slap-chop"that is to say you should have explained in a full sentence what is essentially slap chop. The use of that word slap chop will attract people shitting on you cause the word reminds them of contrast paints and Sloptubers, which fall snugly under the category of things people hate in this general. But to answer your question I really don't know. It honestly does not sound like anything radical or bold. I think if you watch some "grimdark" style tutorials you can see examples of people doing the same or similar things. It depends on your stipple color and your wash color and how they look over each other in relation to your basecoat
>>94655626it's extremely woke, the whole community is full of people who left Warhammer because it had too many "chuds" and their official discord was banning people who they suspected of being 40k fans, they also get really mad if you bring up Aztecs cause someone suggested including tribes from the Americas in the game and have the Aztecs be on the side of hell and it's apparently really offensive to think that a society obsessed with human sacrifice might be on the evil side
>>94655703Oh so it's like the opposite of battletech where all the chuds left warhammer because it was too woke.
>>94654723What was he trying to warn me about, bros?
>>94655703even the general here is woke, bans people and deletes any criticism
>>94653347Was browsing the previous thread and noticed "future proofing" basing. I guess it is by getting paint that will most likely get a close enough version of itself if the manufacturer goes out of business. What staple paints do you all know will be copied? I know most Citadel paints are gonna be copied that's for sure, but I'm not sure about everything else.
>>94655703aztec sacrifice is cool and badass and their defining trait that sets them apart from other meso american/american tribesthe carved stone/astronomy theme is so cool that lizardmen appropriated it and it makes them cooler. "aztec dinos" are like a fantasy troupe now. Montezuma in Civ V is a warmongering conquest themed leader. why are they trying to sanitize people who literally sacrificed captives atop structures and wore animal skins and chopped people up with obsidian swords? t. ethnic mexican
>>94655843It is verbotten to portray non-white people as "the bad guys" because you're racist if you do so.
>>94655864>as "the bad guys"The real issue is that people can't get their head around non-21st-century morals and assume stuff like >>94655843 described automatically as bad.
>>94655843People hate on TC because chuds flooded their discord and they told them to fuck off. It's just butthurt that will be rationalized with whatever the flavor of the month is. I don't recall if TC has lore for the new world yet.
>>94655891>I don't recall if TC has lore for the new world yet. They dont. But they rather ban people instead of encourage them to make up their own stuff.
>>94655891>rationalization TC has "we love transgenders!!" in their discord description. I think it is you who are trying to rationalize a contrarian point of view.
>>94655833I mean if you fancy historical coloured paints, AK interactive basically gives away the alternatives to them through its equivalences to Vallejo, and I think AMMO basically is AK paints so they're more or less the same. So as far as I can say, I think Vallejo's acrylic paints that come in droppers will be mimicked by other companies focused on delivering acrylic paints to scale modelers. Whereas for fantasy and wargaming they will be mimicking Citadel paints.
>>94655719pretty much>>94655799yeah I tried talking in there once and they were all extremely defensive and whiney about anything that slightly deviated from what they considered acceptable
>>94655914careful there, I got warnings and 1 day vacations for saying things like these in some generals
>>94656005which generals? like /wip/ where this whole discussion doesn't belong?
>>94655843yeah I couldn't understand what the justification for not having them was, kept seeing people say "they don't fit the aesthetic cause aztecs weren't technologically advanced enough for WW1 themed game" but neither are mediaeval crusaders hence why it's an alternate timeline so there is no reason why the Aztecs wouldn't advance aswell and their aesthetic can easily be adapted to WW1 level tech, had one of those idiots claiming the Aztecs were a nomadic people who lived in mud huts despite the fact the aztec capital had 4 times the population of London at the time it was found by the Spanish, and one retard who kept trying the stupid whataboutism argument of "if we have Aztecs why not have Vikings aswell" thinking it was a gotcha except the Viking culture had been almost completely absorbed into christiandom by the time the crusades started, the faggots in that thread couldn't even understand how linear time works lol
>>94655891they have some lore but that's what started the whole shitshow because some people started to suggest lore ideas about how the rest of the world had developed since the gates of hell opened and the whiney wokies who ran the server got mad about it and started banning people and then just started mass banning anyone they suspected was a Warhammer fan
>>94655244I been using a size 8 synthetic brush for painting mini and for some reason it way better than size 1,2,3. The tip is just feel better and durable than small size brushes, is this normal?
>>94656082Yes. Bigger brushes have more body and hold onto moisture better. If it keeps the point well and you don't accidentally hit areas you didn't intend to, then using a bigger brush is perfectly valid
Reposting. Happy with the results but it was a pain to paint with a brush. How much will an airbrush improve the experience on painting vehicles?
When I am in a pinch, can I paint without a primer?I freshly ran all out.
>>94656023>except the Viking culture had been almost completely absorbed into christiandom by the time the crusades startedAlmost, but not completely. If someone wants to make up his Pagan/Viking warband, why not? The Northern Crusades were a thing, but if a literal door to hell opened, focus of the christian nations clearly lay elsewhere but some remote "vikings". And with a time gap, with constant war against hell, spanning from Crusades to essentially WW1, basically everything is possible.
>>94656102Of course.
>>94656102No, it is illegal
>>94656105Thank God, I thought I'd have to bore myself to death over Christmas.
>>94656108Haha, nah bro I think I remember hearing it's a nightmare to do it. Paint not sticking, chipping off, all that
>four weeks to paint an army>two weeks in>find out schedules changed without anyone saying anything and I actually only have until Thursdayfuckpray for me
>>94656111it's not worth it anon. resist the urge
>>94656142>resist the urgeI'm going to take my chances. I have all the paints, the brushes, the mini, everything. I got fuck all to do except painting as well, but my can is dry. I am going to paint a Stormcast Eternal, one of those with a hammer. I think, instead of Primer, I am going to use gold on the entire mini and then just paint and see how it goes. Or would you recommend rather painting it all in grey as a "primer" and then paint as normal or maybe white?I got literally every color under the sun, except black.I hope it sticks, even with primer it chips sometimes.
Do you guys use somekind of clear coat on your finished works to make them more durable? Got inspired to paint the minis of my Space Hulk boardgame and want them to last.
>>94656190I use Liquitex satin varnish, then Army Painter matte varnish on anything non metallic. Only time I've ever had paint come off in ~5 years of this combo was when a guy at the shop had just repaired a broken model and still had superglue he didn't notice on one finger.
>>94656190I think anons here recommended "varnish" when I complained about my 6 hour paintjobs being ruined after subobtibal storage
>>94656190don't tell me that's finished anon, you have something good going, fix the spill overs
I’ve got my eye on the armypainter fanatic skin tone paints. How are the lighter to darkest skin tone paints? Anything I should be aware of when using ap fanatic paints? I’ve only used Vallejo paints before the reformulation.
Is it fine to just use matte varnish or is gloss followed by matte a must? I play maybe 2 games a year so my models don't get damaged much.
I AM GOING TO FDM PRINT A MINIATURE...AND PAINT IT!
How sturdy is plaster for basing material?
>>94656353if you don't touch it's ok, but if you crush or poke it it may crumble, not all kinds of plasters are made equal tho, you can also mix it with a fair amount of wood glue to make it rock solid
>>94656339just matte is enough, the goobertown weirdo has a video on that
ok i was too ambitious with the flag and realized that my ambition waaaay too far outreach my abilitybut I gave it my somemade the wash myself and it seemed to work
What is the best glue for normal 40K models? Say Space Marine? Tamiya Thin or superglue?
>>94656287This is work in progress, ain't it? I might do some fixin' but these are my first "organic" minis, I've done few Battletech mechs before. And I still got rest of the squad and tyranids to improve on.
>>94656414Holy hell, either that space marine is very short or that gene stealer is MASSIVE(I am not very deep in the lore, admittedly)
>>94656393tamiya thin for plastic on plastic. You should always keep superglue on hand if you ever plan to use green stuff or resin bits/parts on your models. Superglue is also necessary to stick things onto your bases. Can't use tamiya plastic cement to put your space marine on a base covered in texture paint.personally i use loctite glue and tamiya cement with the green cap. I've been printing a lot of shit too so superglue is my only option. once your tamiya bottle gets low, stick some leftover plastic and sprues in there and make sprue goo. comes in handy for filling gaps and holes. pic rel had it's mutant arm connected with sprue goo
>>94656381freehand looks fine. can't tell what it's supposed to be or mean. definitely paint over that wash in the folds. your wash was too thin it seems and flowed into the cracks and dried there. next time wipe all the excess of your brush like you would a glaze and paint it in carefully and thinly in the cracks. be patient as it will take a few passes and wait for it to dry before doing another pass. that's what i did for this wizard and it came out really nice I thinkDo the same thing for the khaki folds above and under the belt. any brown earthshade/strong tone will work nicely. wash the chainmail and boots too.
>>94656414>This is work in progress, ain't it?that's on me, since you were asking for varnish advice I jumped to conclusionsthose models are great, i would love to get the full space hulk termie squad but current prices are ridiculous
>>94656470The models are great and they are all unique with dynamic poses. That's why I got interested.
Hey Anon, finally got your package. I will start painting pretty soon after the holidays and being with my family!
New Hampshire Anon, thank you very much for the Secret Santa gift! Lots of grass and plants, bit of paint and basing. I've been in a bit of a painting rut recently so I want to try that robot and try my hand at heavy weathering. Also really curious about the water and puddles, looks like I can mix colors with it to make a goo of some kind. Hope you have a Merry Christmas!
>>94655843it’s been a constant thing online where some people claim the aztecs were good boys who dindu nuffin but then historians point out that the other mesoamerican civilizations actually allied with the spaniards because they hated the aztecs so much.
>>94655769Peanuts in the food
>>94656791Yes I got the message from Santa. I will live. The emperor protects me against peanuts.
>>94656843>The emperor protects me against peanuts.he also resembles one
The guy I do commissions for just bought me the villainy ink set, my only issue is I have absolutely no idea how to use enamel paints.Any tips?
>>94655597Little bit of dark purple wash in those blue swirls will make the details pop, same with the skin.
>>94656095It turned out really well. An airbrush would help you knock out the main colors and general highlights in short order but youd still have some detail brushwork left of course.
>>94656137Statue army it is!
>>94656190Thin coat of ak gloss then one or two thin coats of ultra matte.
>>94656945thanks anon, purple wash could definitely be good for getting some shade onto the face, I wasn't quite sure which way to go with that but purple sounds like a good move, I'm still trying to figure out what colour the armour should be, considering brass or black/dark blue and leave the red in the crevices
>>94656976It's 2/3 painted, so I'm just gonna accept that the last third is primer only. I don't have enough time today to get more fully painted and varnished (painted isn't a problem, it's the "two stages of varnish at 24 hours of cure time each" that's a killer). The other guy is using proxy models since it's a demo game, so the bar is lower.
>>94656583Happy holidays and Merry Christmas Anon. Nice to see it arrived intact after an eternity.
>>94656673Transparent inks in the water effects will tint it nicely.
hard to tell on the picture because they’re still 60% white primer but i’ve been working on the skin here. Need to work on my paint thinning skills and highlighting. I think they’ll turn out decent though once i paint the rest if them
Merry christmas everyone! So did you start /WIP/ing on your gift, is it still under the tree, or are you scared that you got grinched?Just primed those battletech dudes, now to choose whether I want to follow the booklet for the colors, or just go wild
I painted the shoulder and the chainsword. I wish I had more time to paint. Also, why does my white paint dry so fast even in the wet pallet? It get weird and fucks up my mixes. Is it becasue it's old? Are all whites like this? (It's vallejo model color)Merry Christmas anons
>>94657239Looks like a good start, anon.
>>94657239I already stripped some of the marines that I got, some are soaking with IPA as I write this, but proper work will start only after the holiday stuff is all done and I'm back at my own place.
>>94657259That looks really good, do you have any tips for freehanding chapter markings?
>>94657259Nice.
>>94657339>>94657387Thanks anons.I'm no one to give tips since this is only my second freehand, but something I learnt is to sketch with a medium gray. It's easier to build up from there and easier to cover if you fuck up.
Now that the metal bastards are assembled and pinned, I am working on some kind of plinth base as I want this to be a bronze memorial statue.
/WIP/, any ideas for old train layout terrain I got cheap that aren't just "Fallout"?
>>94656352I did this with a termagant miniHalf if it looked pretty good, the other half was an incomprehensible mess lol. Used it to practice washes and glazes with for a bit, PLA apparently doesnt need priming
Scot Anon, since it is christmas eve, I opened the package. One of the models will work fine for a project I just picked up again, the other ones will find a place. The Rocks look like hardcandy, I already learned not to chew those.
>>94656352I would recommend epic scale marine vehicles. the actually don't look bad printed in FDM.
>>94657546You make it sound like fighting to defend a perfectly-manicured golf course is not justifiable.
>>94657580>Irn-Bru RockI hope that's got actual Irn-Bru in there, that stuff is nice.
>>94657239Already finished this very cool skeleton my santa sent
>>94657782>You make it sound like fighting to defend a perfectly-manicured golf course is not justifiable.it looked good in old 40k pics, but even they didn't have 50's americana houses.
Anyone ever bought any Crooked Dice minis? I'm considering buying their Threads knockoff Traffic Warden but I'm wary, since the casts look very weird. Can't tell if they just have really gloopy painters or what.
What color should I prime Escher girls? I'm used to painting from black for my Orks. I want to do very vibrant colors but I'm worried that if I go full white I might not be able to cover it properly since I'm used to a very easy basecolor. I was considering zenithal white over black. What do you guys think?
A splendid response to my vague wishlist Anon, thank you! Some kitbashing and, godwilling, actual painting is in order.Merry wipmas yall!
>>94658188Zenithal is best of both worlds. I zenithal all of my models. I do brown > offwhite for things heavy in warm colors/skin tone and black > white for things cool toned
i recently bought a kit of hh marines to use as basis for chosen. this is the first time i've really gotten into kitbashing and it is a total blast just finding every random extra bit and doodad you've had lying around to make your own dudes. i made 10 wysyg chosen and making it wysyg oriented made it even more fun. this dude is my favorite - i've since added a large amount of grenades to his waist to make him even more unhinged
>>94658249Sadly I only have black, sprue-esque grey, and white. So I'll just do white to black. I paint very bold and comic booky (like that pic I posted honestly; pic related also) so it'll hopefully work out.
>>94658188>tentacle wrapping around her leg.You just know.
>>94657544rummaging thought the ol bitz box decorating it up, add the obligatory skulls and bolts
>>94658337fuck me that looks nice
If I'm more into collecting and not painting massive armies is an airbrush still "get one retard it will blown your mind" tier?
>>94658538If you never paint, then no. If you like to paint one or two minis to the best of your abilities, then yes. A good airbrush is a game changer as fuck.
>need a few disposable models to diagnose palette problems and test new techniques with before a new project>nothing on hand>go pick up one of the pre primed d&d blister packswow these models are garbage qualityat least I only paid a few bucks, and my skill is still a limiting factor
>>94657259Scrub here but that looks fantastic
>>94658538>>94658552This. An airbrush can do two things basically: it speeds up priming and basecoating massively if you paint big armies at once. That is not what you are after ofc, but it also allows you to do super neat colour transitions, OSL and other effects on single models that you might want for your collection. Also priming and basecoating in super neat and even and thin layers is never a bad thing, even if you just do it on one guardsman or whatever at a time.
You ever just drink cold water?
>>94658538Arguably even more so, fuck painting display quality skin by hand, shit takes ages and you have to mix like 16 different shades.
>>94658624Do you take the brush out first, or leave it in to let it stew more?
>>94658636That's the cocktail, the cold water is your chaser.
>>94658636Do you make up these questions, Mr. Holden, or do they write 'em down for you?
>>94657239Nice chocolates you got there.

2010 vs. 2024Just got back into the hobby in early November, been practicing slowly to get better and better. Love painting these Loota box Meks. I have no idea what happened with my old model; I think I brushed on Chaos Black as a primer.
>>94658718getting your reddit account posted is not getting doxxed
>>94658726you used to be better at not getting green paint on the rim.
>>94658734I haven't painted the base or the rim yet. Gonna drybrush the sand and then paint the base rim a light sandy color to match (as I do with all my Ork bases).
>>94658737Okay fine. I assumed you were finished.
>>94658741I'm kind of ADHD and always forget one little detail before I take my photos, I usually get excited once my last wash and highlight phase is done (that's why he looks kind of wet around the pores too) and snap a photo. I need to get a lightbox though so I can stop taking these blurry ass magnifier pics.
>>94658203Merry Christmas anon. I hope it's enough bits to do something interesting.
> tracker has reported that it has been deliveredNow to play the waiting game
I'm painting a Christmas ornament. I usually do one of these per year, and sometimes give them out as presents.
>>94656168Just grab a can of spray primer from a hardware store

Anybody have any idea how to make flame effects on minis? I want tow chaos warriors to emulate the effect of being on fire.
>>94658796If anybody does this, test it before using it on a model you care about.

>>94658849I think the trim on the foot looks good. Maybe rhinox hide for the pouch?
>>94657580Glad to hear it anon, enjoy!
>>94658337Welp, that's enough of this for today. Off to bed, hope you all have a fun Christmas>>94658347
>>94658769>>94659026seconding that, this'd be dead fun to paint for next year
I have yet to paint a wooden staff that I like, also somehow this guy is not coming together at all.Any guidance?
>>94657239Only glued her so far, need to fill all the gaps. I think I'm gonna paint her after I finish the Dunecrawler though
>>94659288I am an idiot
>>94655248Ohioanon, your package arrived. Looks like the carrier had a field day with it.
>>94659306Arrived just in time for Christmas, what a blessing! The death peeler is well done but the frame was not rated to survive the journey. I will take inspiration from it when I paint the fellriders. I've never painted anything from Malifaux and look forward to trying something outside my wheelhouse. I'll have to share the dinosaur gummies with my kids who will enjoy them more than any of the candy I've got for their stockings... Thank you for your generosity and Merry Christmas!

Is green stuff world the best place to get miliput and green stuff? I kinda wanna get a whole bunch of stuff to experiment with. I live in the us if that matters.
>>94659489GSW is not the best place to get anything. High prices and insane (45+ day) shipping that you get the privilege of paying for. Plus they're copyright trolls fucking with smaller businesses. Buy it anywhere else.
>>94659535oh boy is gsw schizo back?
>>94659538First time I've posted about them. Just got burned recently with "5-10 day shipping" turning into 2 months for junk quality product.
>>94659489>>94659535GSW as a company does suck and their "discount" is shit unless you're in Europe. Getting GS and milliput from them is not a bad option if you buy a ton of stuff from them but if you're in the US, consider Hobby Lobby.> mfw bought some resin bits from them> they updated it with more bits and pretended it was the same product I boughtI am mildly upset by this.
>>94659295I got to get around to building mine, she looks like fun.
>>94659655I'm really excited to paint her. As you can see though the parts aren't particularly tight fits, it's gonna take a little bit of work to fill and sand it all
>>94659489I used hobby lobby and ebay respectively, you can find green stuff from a bunch of different manufacturers on amazon or ebay
>>94659257Glaze purple into the shadows for some visual interest and to contrast the yellow. If you have it mahogany as a base color can help since it leans a little purple/red.
>>94659538You don't need to be a schizo to think they're a shit company. There's plenty of evidence. They sell a whole bunch of shit products, many of those are things nobody needs like that ridiculous brush wash station. And sure you can ignore their bad business practices and still buy from them but there's simply no reason to, because you get all that stuff cheaper from somewhere else. If you don't care about where or who you buy from you might as well go with aliexpress, at least there the shipping is faster and it's cheaper. Quality is the about same.
How do I do anything decent with an airbrush? This learning curve is really kicking my ass
>>94659813Practice on a cereal box, or really any food in a boxFill in/outline the letters and shapes
>>94659827What a waste of food....
>>94659938Yeah, I hit Post and realized what I saidIn case others are confused, the box the food comes in, not the actual food
>>94659938We've been over this a thousand times anon. What part of "Eat your paint" don't you understand?
>>94659813What kind of paint are you using?Different brands all need a different amount of thinner, so pick one brand and stick with it for a bit. It will take a while to learn but you will get the feel for it. If you want to avoid excessive disassembly, lean towards too much thinner; too little will clog your brush. Also, the distance between the tip and your mini will affect how much the paint dries before contact, so be aware of that too.
>>94659813What's your goal and purpose for the airbrushing?Do you plan on doing the finishing and final blends with the airbrush or more the initial stages? As a general guide Iine if you feel like priming or basecoating a miniature already feels overwhelming and like a but of a challenge then start on a piece of paper.Draw lines, circles and spirals, paint a dot pattern.Try to vary the thickness of the lines and the dots.Change the pressure or the dilution of the paint and try again. See what difference it makes and try to find a setting that's comfortable and where you have good control. Then you can either do more shapes or try a model again.

Is there anything better than a piece of sanding paper to smooth out some hard to reach mold lines? I don't really feel like spending 10 dollars on tammiya(TM) sanding sponges(TM).
>>94660369You can get the cheap no name sanding sticks for a few bucks on Amazon and cut to length/shape as desired. If not that then you can go to the drugstore/supermarket and get some of the nail files/polish sticks in the beauty section. >mold linesPersonally I like to get these by scraping with a slightly dull xacto blade. Got a whole collection of diff shaped blades for a few bucks at advanced auto,
>>94660392Thanks. What would you clean such a thing with? These nooks and crannies.

robe looks a bit too much like the metal bracers. they're both reading as grey. I would darken the robe then highlight with blue to break it up also the wood of the staff is too similar to the rust on the blade and the armor. Go for a darker wood. think of the dark oak trees from minecraf. a dark chocolate colored wood would add more contrast.hood looks nice. shroom looks cool too. here's mine from many months ago
this is ogre magi from dota 2. I really like the color of the bird mount's blue feathers. any equivalents from vallejo or GW or other big brands?
>>94658298kitbashing is indeed super fun. CSM allow for more of it cause they're canonically scavenging older parts and the books describe them as salvaging loyalist armor pieces while maintaining their millenia old pieces from the heresy days.I turn a box of 10 legionaries into 5 chosen and 5 possessed and saved a lot of money. kitbashed some putrid blightking mutations with the legionaries to mark them as possessed and mutated. I bought the origianl chosen box and used the many leftover bits to spice them up and fit the loadout options. here >>94656435pic rel are some legionaries I turned into Chosen. it just doesnt make sense paying 60 USD for 5 dudes instead of getting 10 dudes that can easily be converted into possessed, characters, or chosen.>>94658310>>94658310you will tell me how you shaded that ork skin
Wash in the undersuit (left abdomen) or no (right abdomen)
>>94660645Man I reckon transparent paints would be so cool on that armour. Like a green on one side and a dark blue on the other. Give that cool chromatic vibe or whatever it's called.
>>94660753That's what I thought at first but AP speedpaints are way too opaque for that, I had to mix it with silver (basically metal medium because it sucks ass as a paint). Citadel contrasts probably work a lot better for it but fuck paying 8 bucks a pot. Could just go for a blue metallic outright too.
>>94659339Glad to see it got to you before Christmas but a bit horrified to see the absolute state of the box. Sorry you have to sift through broken glass because I was naive enough to think that was enough padding for framed artwork. Weren't there "FRAGILE handle with care" stickers on the outside of the box? Those gummy dinos are like crack. The mecha model is about the right size to proxy for a broadside battlesuit. I was going to build one of my papercraft ones but I didn't have the time available.
>>94660645I'm thinkin' wash
>>94660532Plastic glue with brush applicator for that area, scrape as much as you can and melt the rest with a tiny bit of the glue using the brush to smooth it out. Also works well for mould lines on knuckles and cables, or any area you want to he smooth.
>>94660753You mean pearlescent? That actually would look cool, I’m gonna have to research if there’s some kind of process for that. I feel like I’ve seen it before on scale models, so at least it must be possible to mimic if not do outright
>>94660532>no space to scrape it outYou don’t have to scrape it out to flat spot, just scrape it down. Put the blade perpendicular to the mold line, use the tip where the blade is most narrow, and follow the entire line. Like other guy said, plastic cement is also good for smoothing out a surface if there’s any roughness or bumps since it works by dissolving the plastic.

>>94660601>you will tell me how you shaded that ork skinIt's:- AK Interactive Black Green (2 drops of AK thinner to get it quite thin)- AK Interactive Frog Green (2 drops of thinner)- Ork Flesh Contrast painted over the skin very lightly- While it's wet, tissue away the Ork Flesh so it remains in the nooks and recesses ala a wash.- Very lightly highlight Frog Green again.- Pick out some deeper details with Warboss Green if you feel like it (I only did so on the arms)I never really do ork skin the same way twice since I like variety and flexing my skill, but this is what I do for very vibrant ones like that nob. >>94659257the yellow kicks ass. JA from CA thank you so much for the gift. I've already eaten all the chocolate peanuts. I really like Warcry designs, I have a couple of Chaos warbands already. This one will be fun to make, plus I have a couple of the old metal chameleons and I love having old minis mixed in with newer ones to show the contrast on the tabletop. I'm going to try to actually post my progress on these this year, something I haven't exactly done in years past and I feel bad for not posting my /wip/s more often. Also thank you for the 3d print minis. I have a friend that prints and paints a lot of 10mm armies for 40k and fantasy, so I definitely will have someone to play against.

>>94664619About 28 dollars give or take. They do feel buttery smooth while cutting through sprues and leave little to no marks but it's definitely a luxury purchase.

>>94664619Godhand is made specifically for Gunpla where you want to avoid discolorating the plastic at cutting points/near parts. IMO they are way over the top for Warhammer or scale modeling
>>94665326hmmm wait did you mean using the contrast paint to stipple blend?its a thin paint, so it should be easy to do that withonly thing i've seen with any sort of blending with contrast is some tyranid videos where the guy wets his brush and wipes for a really nice and easy blend. was on big minis if i remember right though, but it could probably be done on smaller thingshttps://youtu.be/McS08zKjAY0?si=_hpvWb_POffE96K4&t=666>timestamp was 666hope satan helps with your stipple blends, anon
>>94665360>discolorating the plastic at cutting points/near partsTo be honest, it's not something you can avoid as discoloration is often caused by injection process. But they do help with avoiding stress marks and such.
>>94665396>warhipsterI'm still a bit salty about this guy because he's the biggest reason I fell for the contrast meme. Stumbling upon his video by chance brought me back into the hobby though, so I guess it evens out somewhat
>>94665408>contrast memewhy dont you like contrast?>you dont have to slap chop with it>makes painting yellow easyits ok in my booksive even seen people say its good for panel lining, but tamiya seems like less of a hassle to me for that>they dont have metallics like speedpaint>citadel STILL hasnt made a brush on priimeralso it overpriced, but everything from GW is so its expected
>>94665408>I guess it evens out somewhatPeople shit on Sandy Frank and Carl Macek, too, anon; but it's Columbus and the Egg. How much longer would we have waited for anime if they hadn't laid their groundwork when they did?
Just coming back into mini painting after an extended break and having wanted to come back for a while, was previously looking at updating my ancient paints (including some unopened Citadel from the 90s) to some Vallejo stuff, but I'm hearing that they stuffed up the formula on those so they're no longer nearly as nice?Anyone know any reasonably priced reasonable-quality paints with high availability in Australia? Hell, do we perhaps have a native brand? Also, what do you guys think of priming with Molotow One4All?>>94664984Those look pretty sweet for quick and dirty. Love the contrast between the stone and the glowy green.
>>94665460It's not that I don't like them, they're useful as washes, glazes and for tinting metallics. Their initially marketed purpose of being a basecoat+wash in one coat, while technically true, has a lot of problems though. What I had biggest issues with were uneven/splotchy finish and the hassle needed to correct any mistakes. Maybe I'm garbage but I tried to make them work for a good couple months and was never fully satisfied so I eventually gave up. At this point I've stripped pretty much every miniature I painted using contrasts as basecoats.>>94665471That's a fair point
>>94665506>unopened pot of goblin green
>>94665509>biggest issues with were uneven/splotchy finishhmmm yes first one i used was blood angels redi dont know if they changed it but it was the worst fucking paint i'd ever used, and i used to paint with army painter paint. i mostly dry brushed with them though so thats not the best comparison, before the slap chop thing too.baal red is my favorite now though, no idea where my blood angels red went to, and i dont care its a shit paintalso the contrast thinner (gw gives all of their mediums and varnishes stupid names i dont remember what its called) might help to stop that, as long as it doesnt pool anywhere>the pool hunt after you finish a limbi kinda enjoy that part>find a coffee stain>just stipple/dry brush a lighter colour over ita-all part of my p-plan. . .>goblin greenim surprised GW hasnt just made a texture paste colour of that seeing how loads of people bang on about that paintthey most likely fuck it up somehow anyway
>>94665526Cripes, don't tell me they stopped making it?It's gone a bit swirly, but I'll bet it'll come back with a good shake.
>>94663175Post the pics
>>94665506AK Interactive or Army Painter Fanatic is probably what I would go with right now. Though I don't know if they are available in Australia (I'd assume they are). Vallejo's new stuff is still pretty good, some of the claims about reformulations are bs, but I do think the quality dipped a bit (for example the bubbles are more noticeable than on previous formulation). Citadel paint is still good but the pots are bad.
>>94665596>>94665526
>>94663490Found my current guy on AliExpress but only after I bought some WW2 scale stuff, he has everything in his catalogue even the marienburg landship but if you are not in Australia or Finland or the other shit nations that banned cooperation with Russia post I would go darkminis
For anyone with experience using both water based acrylic paints and acrylic lacquer paints, how significant are their differences in performance these days? Mainly for airbrushing of course since brush painting with solvent based paints is hot garbage.
>>94664888those clay shapers are shit, a proper one from a art store is a totally different experience
>>94664989NTA but yes. Haven't used it but lot of people seem to swear by it.
>>94665631>acrylic lacquer paintsYou mean like Tamiya's acrylics and Gunze's Aqueous Mr Paint? Tamiya's stuff is really nice to airbrush, especially thinned with Mr Levelling Thinner. I've never quite cracked the code with Gunze, might be that it wants to go on kinda thick (well, relatively speaking at least) and then self-level out to a gloss and opaque car-style coat, so me trying to force it to go on as very thin and rather translucent layers on top of mottling/pre-shading might not have been the best idea. Still prefer them over Vallejo in the airbrush though.Brush painting? Not if I have a choice (and that goes for both Tamiya and Gunze), though contrary to stuff like Mr Paint or Alclad2 it's at least possible.
>>94665944No, I mean lacquers, not solvent based acrylics. So Mr. Color, Gaianotes, etc.
>>94665952Dunno where the "acrylic" bit came from then. Oh well, all I've used there are Mr Paint and Alclad2. Love 'em. Just make sure to prime properly with something else first, because they're hot enough to be sued as plastic cement. Though ironically enough they themselves end up being very sensitive to solvents once applied, so be careful if you varnish them. Rattlecans are not recommended.
>>94665526>>94665597>they DID stop making it>unopened pots now go for $15-$50 each on eBayWhat the fuck.>>94665604The most common ones at my FLGSes seem to be Scale 75, Vallejo and Green Stuff World, though Metro Hobbies in the CBD does seem to have Army Painter and AK. There's also Mr Hobby, seems to be a Japanese brand?GSW seems to be heavily into technical paints.I'd be mostly painting some Warhammer 40K stuff I've collected over the years, plus some dungeon terrain and characters, and later some mostly-metallic custom stuff I want to tinker with.Come to think of it, who does the best metallics at the moment?
>>94665979Lacquers are still acrylic paints, but using stronger organic solvents and with stronger acrylic resins to match
>>94665989And "resin" is plastic, but in this hobby some words have taken on a slightly different meaning from what the chemist or materials engineer might think they mean. You'll find that you confuse people a lot less if you consider acrylics and lacquers to be separate things.
>>94665983>Come to think of it, who does the best metallics at the moment?Outside of stuff you'd only want to put through an airbrush I'm happy enough with both GW and Scale 75, though not every single one from both is a clear winner.
>>94665983>Come to think of it, who does the best metallics at the moment?Airbrush or brush, and water based or can you handle a little toxicity? Any specific colors you are looking for?
>>94666026Water based, only just bought an airbrush and I don't really feel confident putting metallics through it yet (rough little particles, right?), probably brushing and drybrushing for the foreseeable future. Steel, brass, copper, gold, silver and aluminium (if anyone even does aluminium).
>>94665983Those are all good, there is a bigger learning curve at the start with Scale 75 because their medium is differen. Also if you want easy coverage, it isn't the best paint for that. Vallejo is still good. I haven't used lots of Green Stuff World paints but based on the ones I have, I'd rank them above the old Army Painter Fanatic paints ( which were quite bad) but maybe a bit below Citadel, Vallejo, AK etc. But pretty good paints overall. If you are returning to the hobby it doesn't matter that much what paints you go with at the beginning, basically all the brands you mentioned are at least decent. Though like I said the learning curve with Scale might be more punishing, many painters love that range ( though it also divides opinions).Start with this and then search for reviews about other ranges not covered in the videohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv2smsg_aP4
>>94666060Thanks, Anon, I'll give that a watch.
>>94666079Just to add to that anons post, TTC(Duncan's range) has fantastic metallics. You could look into those if you don't mind paying a small e-celeb tax.
Is there anything like greenstuff but black? Or can I like mix in black pigment or somethingI know it sounds retarded but I swear I have a good reason
>>94655248I've never seen anything quite like this before. It was rather surprising to see a second package show up before Christmas, and it contained these four coasters that are way too beautiful to ever actually use.
What pays more mini painting dividends? Watching guids and tutorials on miniature painting, or learning 2d painting principles?
>>94666146Thanks! I had heard of those ones, seems like they're being hyped up as the ultra-premium made-by-a-painter brand, yeah?>>94666149Hey, I can help here, you want to look for black Milliput putty, it's fairly new so it might not be sold everywhere.
>>94666164The best way to learn something is by doing it, not by doing something different but vaguely similar to it.
>>94666164actually painting and learning from that instead
>>94666161I had a bit of assistance unwrapping the first of the two presents inside the box. While the mac and cheese may look absolutely disgusting, I can say after sampling that it is perfectly edible.
>>94666188The main gift itself is exactly what I needed for my Orlock gang Anon, thank you so very much!
>>94666164Both are at best 10% as effective as practice. Look at guides and such for inspiration but if more than at most 20% of your hobby time is spent watching/reading instead of painting you're fucking up.
>>94666178>they're being hyped up as the ultra-premium made-by-a-painter brand, yeah?lol I don't know, I don't pay attention to shit like this. They're really good paints though, think Citadel but with all the terrible paints replaced with actually usable ones
>>94665343Thanks anon. I was already thinking of picking up a chinesium one off of amazon anyway, so I'll go with this one first to learn it first before playing with an expensive one.
>>94666205There was a special surprise inside the card, however. An actual real metal Johnny. I can't even believe it. I'll be sure to post it once I get him painted up.Thank you so much Anon. From the hand made coasters to the Johnny and everything in between. Merry Christmas!
>>94666206I beg to differ. Pic related is the newest mini posted by Duncan Rhodes. He's been painting for years. Painted thousands of miniatures. Was working for years around pro painters in GW. But, he probably spent an hour or two painting the model. He didn't use subassemblies. He didn't meticulously highlight every edge while holding his breath and by using a miniature Windsor and Newtown brush. The best one he could find out of the 10 he bought just to get the one with the best point. Etc. Now my next post will be from a guy who probably painted 0,01% or less minis in his life than Duncan, yet his results are at least 10x better, just because he employed the try hard techniques and spent probably a month or more on the miniature. In this hobby the time you spend on a mini is everything. And try hard techniques are overpowered. You could paint a mini that looks better than Duncan's as your first or second mini, if you employ the try hard techniques, and if you spend a long time on it. In my opinion practice has little importance when it comes to the result.
>>94666291
>>94666188>kraft mac and cheese gummiesLol, what the fuck?
>>94666306I didn't even notice they were gummies. I thought it was a just a box of mac and cheese and remembered how weird some of you fuckers areNow I'm just, I guess in awe? That something like this exists
>>94666297That looks like ass.
>>94666349If you're going for TRON Sallies, it works. I guess
>>94666297You could've at least posted a marine painted with some actually advanced techniques like volumetrics or nmm and not just high effort eavy metal. This thing did not take a month
>>94666291There's a whole fucking galaxy of difference between spending 100k hours doing the same thing over and over and spending 100 hours doing actual practice. Duncan hit a plateau partially due to the limitations of his career and partially due to disinterest in improving, and I would agree in less hyperbolic terms that a fresh painter can do better in like a dozen hours of training with uncomfortable resistance than Duncan's done in over a decade but instructional videos are only a small part of that. They'll show you lots of cool tips and tricks, shortcuts, and cool stuff like that, but you can't learn brush control or build an intuitive understanding of color, light, and paint behavior from watching a video.
>>94660965Turbodork makes some colorshift paints, kinda similar what I've seen in the custom auto painting industry, where the paint changes color based on the angle you look at it. Word of warning, only buy their stuff in person after verifying that the pigment hasn't solidified on the bottom of the bottle. I got like 4 of them that are entirely useless since the pigments have come out of solution and dont want to mix again. Its a known issue and i have yet to find a way to rejuvenate them. This actually makes me think of all the other neat effects that arent really used in mini painting like candy pearls and colored metallic flakes. Wonder where i can get some...>>94664532Smithfield? Oh wow, small world. >t. Newport News anon
Reposting for the last time to check if there's anything else you guys recommend before I start designing things.I'm going to build myself a little toolkit for my mandatory commonly-used tools for mini painting and gunpla over the holidays. What should I keep in there?>2 hobby knives and some blades>nippers>handful of brushes>tweezers>pin vise and drill bits>some sanding twigs and pads>probably my raser and balancer for gunpla at least>pockets for some qtips, skewers and toothpicks>metal spatula and silicone shapersWhat might I be missing that's important? I'll add some extra spaces for expansion and maybe sealed containers to keep some glue in, but this is mostly about the tools I use, not the paints and chemicals
>>94666388>Duncan hit a plateau partially due to the limitations of his career and partially due to disinterest in improvingDuncan explicitly says that the paintjobs he shows publicly are deliberately selected to be achievable by noobs. It is a deliberate choice he makes due to his position as an educator and not the "plateau" of his actual painting skill. He has worked as an army painter for GW for years, he is more than capable of using advanced techniques and achieving great results. You are missing the point.
>>94666413blue tack?
>>94666183>>94666206>>94666185Maybe I should rephrase the question as to not poison it with youtubers. What I mean practicing art fundamentals like shading/colors/volumes/etc. in a 2d space rather than 3d to start. Not necessarily just watching tutorials.Person A:>newbie watches a video on highlighting/shading 3d volumes on a miniature, goes on to practice that - how long does it take them to achieve some benchmark for high-intermediate, or high level of quality in thatPerson B:>newbie learns about shading in 2d, practices that for some time, then moves on to mini painting. how long does it take them to achieve that same benchmark, and additionally how does their progression into advanced/expert level paint jobs compare to Person A's?Obviously there's crossover in either direction, but I'm wondering if one is significantly more useful than the other even just in mini painting.
>>94666452Another anon also suggested greenstuff. I don't know how many 'consumables' I want in this kit, if any. I think I'm going to leave some spots for miscellaneous small containers (tbd which ones I'll find) for holding things like greenstuff, or blue tack, or maybe some small superglue tubes, qtips/toothpicks, that kind of thing.
>>94666407>turbodorkI bought one bottle to try on some lightning claws and it was absolutely dogshit. Fully admit that could be my fault, either via application or storage, but if there’s a way to do a get result with those paints idk how. My bottle is now chunky… like if pop rocks got wet, is that what you meant by separating?
>>94666413You’re overthinking it. The best kits are put together through experience, trial and error, and rearranging things as you go. I fully get the consumerism fun of obsessing over purchases and setups, but I’d really just get to work and change things later as you need
>>94666188>kraft mac and cheese gummies
>>94662625YOU RAT BASTARDI opened the puzzle gummies and you solved it already
>>94666597I'm not buying anything, I'm just making a thing to organize it so I can keep my regularly used stuff out and more accessible than my less used stuff.
>>94666413If you're bringing brushes then maybe a small puck of soap? Do you need anything for decals or basing?
>>94666188>>94666205>>94666222I'm glad you liked it all. My first Johnny was from secret santa a couple years, I had a chance to buy another one and wanted to give it out this year. My first thought when I saw those mac and cheese gummies was "how horrifying, I bet this would make a great gift"
>>94666493Obviously the guy painting tiny plastic men comes out ahead.1. The theory is the same.2. Painting a mini is very different to doing 2d illustration. A piece of paper is infinitely larger than a 1 inch figurine and you can't just set the layer blending mode to multiply in real life. The first guy has an advantage in mechanical skill.3. Some things in 2d can't be replicated on a mini because a mini can be looked at from any angle.
>>94666585Yeah thats exactly it. Reminds me of the leftover bits of cookies or cereal at the bottom of a glass/bowl of milk, but in shiny colors
>>94664532Glad you like it anon!Always happy to spread my nuts around. Merry Christmas!>>94666407Small world indeed!
>>94666407Turbodork looks like shit, way too sparkly. If you want good looking color shifts, buy Gaianotes Prism series. There's also the automotive grade brands but those will usually be out of scale for miniatures.
>>94665983I like scale75 and AK, new Vallejo is good, also army painter did a refresh and is also good now, Mr hobby is good also, really can't go wrong, GSW is a shite company that tries to steal little people's stuff and trademark it then sue them, avoid.Vallejo air metallics are the best, even painting on are better than anything, get a chrome or aluminium and it'll look like legit metal
>>94655244Spent the day building my first leman russ. I got a rogal dorn and a valkyrie too!
>>94666425How many golden demons and crystal brush trophies has Duncan won?
>>94667086How many have you?
>>94667102Same amount as Duncan
I like the kurnoth hunters models and all, but I will say the weapons, at least the sword and the scythes are examples of modern miniature design that I consider actively hostile to painters.

Hello, I am finally at a point in my life where I have the time, physical space and money to be able to support getting into miniature painting. I have always been fascinated by these threads and wanted to get into the hobby.I'm interested in painting fantasy figures primarily. Orcs, Elves, and typical TTRPG stuff. Currently I have made space in my garage for a a nice desk with an LED lamp and I'm going shopping this weekend to make my first purchases of paints, brushes, etc. What should I be looking for / avoid as a complete beginner? Thank you for any input and your time, I appreciate it.
>>94665614I'm in Australia and looking at the sanctions I don't think Warhammer minis would be included in the prohibited goods, might order one or two things to test and see if they get through
>>94666687>you can't just set the layer blending mode to multiply in real lifePeople have been painting in 2D before Photoshop, anon.
>>94667257Like what? Skills or what models to recommend? Reaper minis have a wide affordable variety especially for fantasy stuff. They use a type of plastic they claim that are ready to paint that don't work well with spray primers and may require cleanup (sanding off moldlines) so keep that in mind.
>>94667257I suggest two options. Go to your local game shop, pick a box you like, and ask the sales person for advice what you need to assemble and paint. Probably a tools starter set, a paints starter set, a brush, and a primer.Option two, watch the latest episode of paint perspective and they discuss some starting sets for $100 although there are some meme suggestions there.
>>94667260Yeah I'm in this shithole too, you can't, every Russian recaster will tell you when you tell them you're from this Australia, it's not their end it's oursHilarious you think the state would honestly inform you
>>94667257as a complete beginner get a start painting set the kind that comes with a handful of paints, brush ectget a hobby knifeA can of black primerSome models you likeplastic glue and super glueuse a old cup for water and a old plate for a palettethat's all you need and after you've painted those first models you will know what to get next
>>94665396>hmmm wait did you mean using the contrast paint to stipple blend?More likezenithal primeover dry brush contrast paintstipple blend/weathermaybe filter or glaze over the topusually the dry brush and contrast paint combo looks half finished, too pastel or powderybut I imagine stipple weathering/blending would mask it whilst retaining all the highlights added
Need to start wrapping these guys up in the next day or 2 or I'm never going to finish them.

>>94665509>What I had biggest issues with were uneven/splotchy finish and the hassle needed to correct any mistakesI would argue with this Anon. They (not only GW, also AP etc) market it as a one-coat-solution to get miniatures on the table fast. If you care for "uneven/splotchy" finish or correction of mistakes, then you are not the main target audience already. Those paints are a godsend for people that are really bad at painting, because a single coat of contrast/speed paint looks already better than their usual paintjobs, even if its splotchy or uneven at places (on some minis/textures more than on others). These people get better results pretty much "out of the pot". Also its faster, so there the 2nd target group is the "i have no time, so i play with unpainted minis"-guys. For them, the one-coat-method also works.Since you are posting in here, i assume you consider painting as your hobby just as much as playing with what you painted. So you are already more knowledable about paints and painting than the majority of wargaming "players".. and as you said: "they're useful as washes, glazes and for tinting metallics". And considering all of those 3 things combined. i consider Contrast/SP/Xpress and all the other brands out there to be the single best innovation for our hobby for years. Because everyone will be able to get some kind of improvement for their hobby out of them, with very little investment of research or skill needed.
>>94667078You should spend some more time, and clean and drill the bolter barrels.
>>94667076Thanks, Anon, noted!Just saw my local hobby store, which I thought for years was mostly limited to IRL scale stuff and enamel paints, is apparently now stocking Vallejo and Scale75, so I might take a trip over there tomorrow.
