TQ: Have you ever received Magic related gifts for your birthday?
>>
I got invited to play some digital magic with a friend of a friend. It's a sim so I'm not restricted to my 3 IRL decks. What commander(s) should I brew that would show I'm a cool guy and not a sloppy anus sucker?
I've always kind of wanted to build Titania or Feldon or some U Devotion that can Master of Waves+Mystic Reflection, but the card pool of commanders now is so vast I don't even know how to narrow it down. Pic semi related.

I already know to avoid the trap of jamming in a ton of fast mana and rocks that would make me look like a giga tryhard.
>>

I got my 3rd commander from a gift

I finished the Hatred Hu Tao commander after getting some more opinions on it!
Also improved the visuals of the card a bit, i think it's ready for print now?

Took everyone out in my pod on turn 6.

>turn 1, Sol ring
>turn 2 Azusa, Sylvan Library
>turn 3 Green Suns Zenith a Oracle of Mul Daya
>turn 4 Garruk Primal Hunter, Summoner's pact a Terastodon to get rid of a pesky Rest in Piece and two Swords
>turn 5 Eldrazi Monmument, Lotus Cobra and Return to Wildspeaker thanks to Rude Awakening
>turn 6 Green Sun Zenith again for Craterhoof and then cast Overwhelming Stampede and kill everyone doing 219 damage over the top, trample indestructible

One player could have Farewell me the previous turn, but didn't since they knew I was going to kill the aggro player with the swords first since they weren't a threat. He said he didn't expect me to be able to pull of an attack like that. I love mono green, bros.

Aethershit was more fuel for the UB fire. >>96661271
I don't like custom cards spilling into other threads, but since this is at least tangentially EDH related, I'll be polite, but I won't like it.

You need some remedial color pie; colors are mechanical in Mtg. They're not elements, they're not tribal, they describe the mechanical behavior of a card and cost its effects based on how those mechanical behaviors affect the game.

White is not "divine"; we have gods in every color. John Lee should be White because he is associated with law and order, has a protection effect, and you're giving him a toughness matters effect.

Personally if I was going to slap John Lee on a card, I'd play with the money and currency theme of Morax.

Probably something like "{T}: Target creature you control gains indestructible until end of turn. An opponent may end this effect, if they do create a Treasure Token."

If I wanted to crack him and make him more expensive, I'd turn around and also give him "Non-creature Artifact Tokens have "{T}: Target creature other than ~ gains indestructible until end of turn. An opponent may end this effect, if they do create a Treasure Token."
>>
>>96661319

Also, I'm of the opinion that every mechanic should have a color it's primary, secondary, and tertiary in. White and Blue have the first two well established, but there's still an opening for a third color to claim.

>>

Yes, give black a fucking artifact destruction that requires them to sac all their lands. I don't care.
>>
>>96661454
And then there's blue which actually does do everything and more
>>
>>96661454
Sometimes it's just a consequence of EDH as a kitchen-sink format. Things that go into other enviroments trickle into here and that can mean a number of things that are important or good for other formats show up here as terribly odd ducks.

Consider black artifact destruction: It sounds unacceptable in constructed formats, but what about limited? The reason we've gotten the enchantment hate black has gotten lately is because without it black would have been getting paddled in draft unless you were always specifically taking archetypes that gave you a color to deal with it. White draw is similar: every other color gets some excuse to draw cards, leaving white out just makes them painfully slow in limited. We have to accept that colors need to be able to do things that stretch the color pie in formats where you can't stretch deckbuilding, and so we let them do the thing but give them a shitty rate on it and so on.

I'll give you red damage prevention. That's just stupid.
>>
>>96661454
Yes, every color should be able to do everything, with the frequency and cost of doing that thing being determined by how good they are at doing it.
>>
>>96661454
This is a consequence of edh becoming the "main" game. There's roughly 7 years of newfags who don't understand the core mechanics and don't care to.

Designers do this all the time with their pet decks. Why do you think there's so much artifact slop in the game? Why do you think 3 color decks are the only ones that get fun/interesting commanders? Why do you think insects keep getting spammed? Why do you think vehicles keep getting spammed?

What's going to kill Magic won't be UB or corporate greed, it will be the lack of leadership on the design team ensuring that design gaps fans are yearning for aren't being ignored for the 10th set in a row so dev faggot #348 can make another Izzet artifact Commander or exile matters or vehicle fag deck. My biggest hope is when AI replaces them that we'll start actually getting a variety of cards that support actually different deck types and tribes. My biggest fear is that it's going to be trained solely on previous MtG design and we'll keep getting the same tired and boring shit over and over and over again (which of course would have the happy side benefit of killing the game).
>>
>>96661546
Incorrect and outdated. Color-pie breaks are FINE as long as they are overcosted or forced to be more on theme. For example, Withering Boon is an awesome use of a color pie break and fits well within black despite it countering a spell. If anything, color-hosing should come back as well.

Correct. That is the intended trade off. You do some things very well, other things poorly if at all.

5c used to be for sliver and dragon tribal near exclusively and used to be super clunky as well. 5c do everything engines are also a newer invention and part of the problem.

Alternatively, look at constructed. You don't see 5c decks ruling every format even when they're not locked to color identity, because prioritizing actual win-cons and focusing on your strength means you don't need to try and shore up every weakness you might have.

Depends on your bracket and your price point. I'd run Gwenom at very least, but there's only 93 non-changeling spiders in golgari and most of them are pretty underwhelming. Spider-Ham can help you lean into food synergies which you could throw in Peregrine Took for. Might also consider Fynn, the Fangbearer to close out games or force blocks when you have a decent board of spider tokens with things like wall crawl or arachnogenesis.

Please give my Alania deck some feedback. I took most of the Copy spells that I have in my normal Veyran deck because Alania makes them kind of redundant. You have to consider that this company is extremely infested with mentally ill women, trannies and other freaks.
All it takes is one lunatic in a meeting suggesting that "tribal" has a weird racial feel to it and now it has to be removed, because nobody wants to risk being the guy at the office that draws the ire of these types and/or potentially defends something problematic.
It's an infinite spiral of deranged ideological purification and their world view doesn't really have a mechanism for stopping it.

STACK QUESTION

Had a heated argument last night. I want to explain what I'm doing, and if I'm doing it right so I don't look like a huge asshole.

I have: Hive mind, Mirari, Lier on the battlefield

What I'm doing: I cast borne upon a wind, and then turnabout

>Mirari on the stack, resolves first, untap my lands
>Hivemind spells on the stack
>I cast narset, targeting my borne upon a wind with mirari copy (hivemind, everyone gets narset)
>I cast display of power (can't be copied), I bounce all narsets I don't own, and copy whatever I want

with sorcess schemes, I can cast display of power as long as I have mana.
Narset's reversal doesn't counter, and effectively 'converts' the hivemind copies into MY copies.
It''s a exponential copy loop with display of power.
>>
>>96663664
I put lier instead of past in flames to make it less complicated(flashback on resolve), but I run both
>>
>>96663664
I am REASONABLY sure the spells that gain flashback from Past In Flames (or from Lier) don't keep it once they go to exile, so you can't keep recasting Display of Power (which I think is the line you're going for?)

I always thought this card was really cool. There was a challenge match in DotP 2013 where the opponent would spam wall of vines and try to win with helix pinnacle. I thought about putting it in my mono green deck just for fun or to psyche out my opponents.

unfortunately "made for commander" cards like farewell are huge silver bullets designed to be anti fun

Farewell is exactly why I include Warping Wail in my mono green/black/golgari decks, Anon. No better feeling than cucking someone trying to board wipe with this. Exiling a mana dork/key combo piece is also funny.
>>
I played the monogreen deck win but better:
>T1 Arboreal Grazer (+1 forest, drew a forest)
>T2 Asuza (my commander, +4 forests, drew a forest)
>T3 Horn of Greed, Doubling Cube (+7 forests, drew 2 forests as well as Omnath
>T4 Omnath, Case of the Locked Hothouse (Didn't make land drop this turn :()
>T5 Genesis Wave X = 16 (+4 forests all ripped off the top, +6 forests from Genesis Wave, Eternal Witness hit, targets Genesis Wave in yard
>T6 Greater Good, Sac a 9/9 Omnath to draw 9 discard 3, plop down Big Glizzy G to vomit my hand out, Finale of Devastation X = 10 to give everything +10/+10 and haste

>>
>>96664073
Are you fucking kidding me
>>
>>96664019
Okay, but my greater point remains the same. In order to do that setup, here's all the steps you need to go through:
>Get Binding in yard
>Get 7 power creature on board
>Get targetted while Not of this World is in hand
Even with the most efficient setup you're giving (playing Binding and using Regisaur), that still six mana and three cards. If you play it earlier, you're not hitting enough cards and you don't have the board presence to finish the game, and if you play it later, then you're just using it as a finisher, which to play proactively means you're casting a game-ending Eldrazi anyway. And, again, procing it with Not Of This World is reactive that's still very setup-dependent. Part of what makes Rift so deadly is that it's versatile and harder to interrupt. Because it only needs one card in hand, a blue player with seven mana is never a safe target to go against, and your board is always at risk of being wiped. Because of this, the blue player is also free to set up their board for a game and clear your defenses.
Binding lacks that. Binding is a threat as soon as it's in the graveyard, but that gives a very clear coordination in which it can be interrupted by literally any deck. If you're using it reactively to an opponent's attack, you're casting a seven mana spell at instant speed in combat, which ideally would be enough to deal with the attack anyway, and if your opponent is stupid enough to stumble into a Not Of This World, that's a legitimate skill issue on their part, not a strategy.

I'm not in anon's camp of "it's a bad card because Rift exists." It's graveyard value, which is always good because self-mill exists. I'm saying it's not a Rift replacement because it serves a different role, and it's sure-as-fuck doesn't Rift better than Rift.

Latepost but I will note that FFXIV went through this a while back. Beyond conceptual woke pandering (not saying that cannot at least be a minor contributor), the term "Beast Tribes" was used to describe what were initially these extremely small diminutive groups of less-feral civilizations of non-human entities that barely had enough culture and rulership qualities that they could be distinct from just roving groups of intelligent animals. The terminology was invented by a racist Lalafell (Dwarf/Halfling) financial group that wanted to basically differentiate them from regular citizenry and make it so that engaging with war with them was more appealing since they weren't warring with "real" civilizations, but just roving brigands and tribes of savages.

Initially the term was one of those things where it's just an old word that grew favor with the people, as they found that the """Savage""" Beast Tribes were more noble and malleable than they thought. However, as time went along, the groups that were considered Beast Tribes stopped just being Kobolds and Sylphs found in the woods, and started becoming more advanced and technologically competent, with one in particular being leaps and bounds above any civilization that can be found on the planet. The term was initially changed to "Tribal", and then later "Allied Society", because calling a hyper-advanced adaptive Berserker Drone species "Beast Tribes" literally doesn't make sense. Some people were joking (with varying degrees of seriousness/urgency/etc.) about the change being because it's "Woke" to stop calling them Beast Tribes, but honestly it's just because it's functionally nonsensical after a certain point. Similarly, in MTG, calling Phyrexians, Eldrazi, Thopters, etc. and everything of the sort "Tribal", while it's easy to identify as a terminology, also doesn't make sense outside of the context of explicitly Lorwyn's "Tribes".

If that's legitimately a problem against your pod, you're playing with casuals that would also get filtered by Avacyn MLD. Every color either has some way to get around that, or can combo off before you get too many Eldrazi on the field.

No but you wouldn't need to because it doesn't cost 7 mana to do it in your main phase. I dont really get the argument. It is literally cyc rift effect, just in a roundabout way, for obvious reasons. No its not 1:1 but it is a one sided board clear, even for effectively the same mana.

>>
>>96664308
and yet I bet you whine about Farewell every single time
>>
>>96664322
I counter farewell with my warping wail/etc. The way I play my spaghetti monsters is I just try to hold one protection at all times for a board wipe. If they nuke one creature, it's no big deal since double cascades fills the hole easily (or the billions of tutors like eye of ugin, sanctum of ugin, conduit of ruin, etc). Either way this argument is silly. I've dealt with boardwipes pretty well with counters or just quickly rebuilding.
>>
>>96664308
>That one card
I chose Summary Dismissal because it was designed to stop game-ending Eldrazi casts (set with nu-Emrakul, remember), but there are a fuckload of other options. White has Magistrate and a myriad of Rule of Law effects, or can either kill you before you set up or get you on the backfoot, and enough board wipes that don't care about indestructible that it doesn't matter. Red will outrace you, and if they don't target you first, it's because you're playing with a group that is there to make everyone have a fun, long game, which isn't skill on your part. Green is doing what you're doing. Black will be at 10 life but have half their deck dumped onto the field. That just leaves blue, which you're directly comparing your deck to AND has several ways to get around cascade and stompy with commkn answers every deck should be running. Tale's End stops a trigger. Summary Dismissal stops you cold. The people who actually have the size of penis you want people to think you have will play a foil Time Stop.

That's just what happens sometimes, anon. One player was mono white and got nothing out but Rest in Piece, Lightning Greaves and a small creature. The deck with Swords of Light and Shadow was attacking the white player as he was the only one playing white or black, then he never got to attack me more than once with his Sword of Feast and Famine because I destroyed it with Terastodon. The last player, the one with Farwell, was pillow forted up nice and safe trying to get a combo together. He easily could have just wipe the whole board before I won, but like I said, he though I was only going to kill be able to take the other guys out next turn, certainly not him with all his walls up.

Yeah, mine's not 1st ed. It's also beat to shit (HP) because I was a retarded kid lmao. Maybe a couple hundred bucks at best.
>>
>>96666129
Ungraded (but decent looking) it'd be worth about 250 so if it looks fucked up it's probably not worth much at all sadly lol
>>
>>96666021
Looks nice, I'd probably add a protection spell or two more but that's probably due to my group. Crab best girl, btw.

Thanks glad you like it fren! I did wanna add a boros charm at least yeah, idk how that slipped my mind.
Btw can you explain what you like about crab? She's fine but it kinda eludes me why she would be someone's favorite.

Cringe.
>>
Can we all agree Foundations was a pretty good set?
>>
>>96666199
It was terrific, its one downside is that we're not getting another one of them for potentially another four years

I mean yeah the deck is only like 200 bucks, these can easily go to 900+ if they're optimized

There’s no borderless version of this card…

Final Fantasy also fits the universe within, just like WH40K and LotR does. This is obvious because of previous sets. Spiderman is a huge cum stain on Magic The Gathering as a whole.
>>
>>96666896
this is the ultimate goal of wotc. making UBshit so egregiously bad the others don't seem that bad. the same way game companies push the envelope with lootboxes. suddenly not having them is a reason to cheer
>>
>>96666925
If you doomers had actually bought product you wouldn't be in this mess. But you wanted wotc to cater to you without paying them.
>>
>>96666956
there was never a chance. UBtourists consume product to collect which means they are by default buying more than people who actually play the game and buy to PLAY the game. wotc is catering to outside collectors because their wallets are new an thus more full
>>
>>96666982
Also because you guys dont buy product, at all. Mr. Big Dick buying a single at his LGS for the vig and wondering when he's gonna find one that doesnt go belly-up in the next 2 years
>>
>>96666925
did you mean make UW shit so bad? because I'd rather play Final Fantasy the Gathering than Aethermourn
>>
>>96666991
>>96667008
they have also started making UW sets as unappealing as possible to boost UB sales, yeah
>>
>>96667014
That's not really true. Bloomburrow was good, and MKM was mechanically interesting even if the story was a snoozer

I watched Seth Probablybetterknownassaffronolive's video yesterday and I knew Hasbro was in dire straits but I didn't realize how bad it was. MTG is apparently currently (for the past 2 quarters) the only thing profitable at the company. Hate the game not the player, etc. I guess.

I think it's not QUITE that, but it is WotC is the big thing for Hasbro. I think they just about break even on Transformers, and Monopoly Go makes quite a bit, but everything else is losing money.

Dnd is also profitable. As if licensing. But all their toys are fucked because the toy market got fucked during covid + tariffs on Chinese plastic
The smartest thing they did was have printers world wide for mtg so tariffs and export fees don't touch the golden goose
>>
>>96667974

not for long, with all the garbage WOTC is pulling
