Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to early Dungeons & Dragons - less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about. We'll be happy to help you get started on this playstyle.

I'm thinking about domain/war game play, but haven't decided on the system yet.

You're supposed to retire adventures and pass on their stuff to successors and create whole lineages. Once you figure out one class, you gotta play through them all.

There's zero effort when someone is doing something they love, and that miserable vermin obviously has absolutely nothing he loves in life except trolling /osrg/.

A guy I was playing with started calling the guy playing the thief "Blue Falcon" after he pocketed some gold. I later find out that it's some slang for "buddy fucker" and he was trying to be real mean about it and the rest of the group didn't really get what he was doing. I'm now gonna have to talk to him about it like he's a schoolboy.

Not the weirdest slang I've ever heard.

Guy would call any character not playing fighter "peaches."

Peach this, Peach that. Stand back, peaches.

It's because they're soft and bruise easy.

How do you get tired of going into dungeons?
There's infinite possibilities in them.

What did your players steal from a dungeon that made you finally make the switch away from XP for gold and embrace the enlightened 2e XP rules?

My players stole doorknobs ALL THE FUCKING TIME.
>>
>>96897722
Are you me? One of my players researched a variant of Floating Disk that was specialized for doorknobs. In addition to carrying them, it also polished them. And extra capacity because of the specialisation while staying a first level spell. That was the straw that broke the camel's back.
>>
>>96897743
People underestimate how much the doorknob stealing business affected early D&D. One of the core design goals of AD&D 2e was to fix that issue. Thank god it finally came along because until it was published I felt I didn't have the right to stop giving out XP for god.
>>
>>96897750

I believe his main train of thought here is probably to later appeal to archives to show that "2e thread" only had off-topic spamming, while my "best general" had proper AI generated posts on topic to OSR... whoops I mean proper OSR content

>We Blew Our Last Torch and Fought the Boss in the Dark. Typical Shadowdark Night.

Just finished a brutal delve into the Sunken Monastery catacombs and I need to share this quick. This system is genuinely terrifying when the countdown timer is real.

The crew (Borin the Tank and Elara the Sneaky Thief) were after the Sunstone pendant. We start with two torches. Within five minutes of dropping down, one torch just went poof from a nasty draft. Half the party is in total darkness.

>Skeleton Ambush:
We couldn't see anything, and then BAM! three crusty skeletons popped up. Borin took a wicked dent to the shoulder, but Elara managed to jam the old crypt lever, collapsing a wall and sealing the rest of the skeleton squad behind us as our last torch was about to die. Close call, but we were out of light sources!

>Lantern Pushing:
We had to rely on a single hooded lantern from that point on. Pushed deeper into a huge, fungus-covered room where the air felt super charged—you know, the bad kind of charged.

>The Void Cultist:
The Sunstone was there, guarded by a massive, bloated Cultist of the Void throwing shadow magic around. The fight was pure resource management. Kaelen, the wizard, had to burn his absolute last Magic Missile to stagger the guy, which finally let Borin connect and smash him.

We got the pendant, but the noise of the fight drew something huge and terrifying closer, and we didn't stick around to find out what. Zero healing potions left, lantern oil running dry, so we just bolted back to the surface. Left a ton of unexplored loot, but hey, the darkness wasn't worth it.

Anyone else find Shadowdark just makes you panic-sprint every time?

I swear it’s getting worse every year. This batch of students—you would not believe how many of them grip their pencils like they’re trying to crush a soda can. It’s the "death grip" or the full-fisted claw, rarely the nice, relaxed tripod we used to teach.

It’s genuinely worrying. Their fine motor skills just aren't there. I know we blame the screens, but honestly, it’s a direct result of them not having enough time with physical play—no Lego, no playdough, no scissors, no stringing beads. Those activities build the foundational muscles needed for endurance and control.

They tire out after three sentences, and their writing looks messy and strained. Trying to correct a five-finger fist grip in a seven-year-old who’s already developed the muscle memory feels like pulling teeth. It takes up so much class time just to teach them to hold the tool of their trade.

Just venting, but I think we’re heading for a generation of kids who can type a paragraph at 80 words per minute but can’t sign their name comfortably.

This will be the death of TTRPGs. There's a reason WotC wants to go full digital.

They're there, just used in different ways. They can twiddle their thumbs with levels of precision that are insane thanks to all them vidya, and I know artists who prefer to use a mouse over a stylus because it lets them draw faster and with greater precision.

The funny thing is that in Ukraine, the most effective soldiers by far at the moment are the drone operators, and their skills have gotten to levels that make even professional drone racers wonder how it's possible to maneuver something so quickly and so precisely. And, it's because they've spent the last several years with most of their time wearing VR headsets performing literal life-or-death high-stakes operations. And, these are guys mostly in their 20's and 30's, and not even the kids who've never spent a day without a smart phone in their pocket playing two games at once while also watching tiktok videos. The next generation is going to take drone operations to levels even more absurd than they are now.

Based. As the official role playing game of the LGBT national alliance, 2e deserves its proper spotlight in the osr.
>>
>>96898477
>3.0 is probably my favorite osr next to runequest
Based. 3.0 is the best OSR system. 3.5 is when things went to shit, and the OSR started as a reaction to 3.5 and to bring 3.0 back.

You can tell because 3.5 is from 2003 and Castles & Crusades is from 2004. If the OSR was a reaction against 3.0, it would have started in 2001.
>>
>>96898502

Mind: Blown
>>
>>96898296
Why are you so obsessed with trying to claim WOD isn't OSR?

Trying to redefine what the OSR is and was JUST to exclude WoD is absolute nonsense and is easily disproved and disputed.

If you don't like WoD and don't want to discuss it, that's fine. That's your choice. But, you cannot deny it is OSR or try to stop people from discussing it in the OSR general.

>Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR D&D, D&D 3.0, derived systems, and all content compatible with them, including Knave, Cairn, Castles and Crusades, Shadowdark, Pathfinder, Mork Borg, and Mausritter.

>Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to early (pre-2003) Dungeons & Dragons: Less emphasis on murder hoboing and dungeon delving and a greater focus on metaplots, DM narration, and character story arcs, while keeping a tone that is respectful towards the sensibilities of Evangelical Christians and LGBTQIA+ folk.

>D&D 3.5 and later editions (2003 and later) are off topic, and so are demons, devils, assassins, and being controversial. Races should be referred to as "ancestries", alignment are a reference to the political sensibilities of California in 2020, no race is intrinsically evil, and there has to be at least one halfling of colour and one LGBT humanoid in your party.

>If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're bi-curious about, we'll be happy to groom you into this lifestyle.
>>
>>96898629
Nice but
>and being controversial
should be "and causing offence". Also the first time you said LGBTQIA+, but then you said LGBT. You should use the more inclusive form both times.

>I think he's just lurking and planning his next move
I don't think he has a plan at this point. It's just sunk cost fallacy at this point forcing him to keep trying to do what he's already committed himself to doing.

It's kind of like in chess where the players both see checkmate in seven moves but the losing player still has to go through the motions because he hasn't left himself any better options; he's just forestalling defeat. He's already aware that people are just going to ignore all his posts and keep remaking the thread, but since his only other option is admitting defeat, he has to keep making things worse for himself.

the first anon here, I wasn't implying WoD is OSR
I was saying it's totally natural any given ttrpg general isn't getting dozens of posts/per hour
I used my table choosing to go for a halloween-special CoD one-shot as an example
we play once in 2 or 3 weeks best to worst, so having played a halloween-special CoD one-shot the last week I can have like 1.5 months in between my main campaign sessions

the second anon is obviously a troll
>>
>>96898478
don't try to make it about some "righteous vengeance" this thread has seen what.. 140 spam posts in the last 6 hours?

the actual funny things is the amount of effort the couple of anons put into it
and most importantly that it proves
a) you really don't just want others to leave you alone, you want them to populate your space but after agreeing to submit to your fake "consensus" of rigid rules
b) you see any alternative as a threat because you know anons would rather not have to engage with the toxic couple of anons you are a part of

well guess what
it's way easier for others to make a new thread once in a while than it is to spam it to the bump limit
so good fucking luck

>>96898127
I don't think the boring "good boy" posts he makes are AI generated. They're just very boring and very technical and incredibly forced, because that's actually the general make up of him. He's actually worse than AI posts.

His whole philosophy around games is pretty warped, and they're a huge part of his ego. He's one of those grognards that weighs himself and other people by how much they play, and how well they've memorized rules, and generally how much of an obnoxious loser that creates a bad stereotype they are. It's why his posts never contain any original or interesting ideas.

He just lacks many of the most important skills involved with games, like having a strong imagination, social skills, clever solutions/strategies, and so on, and has to cope with the fact that he's kind of just a dullard by imagining that the only thing that matters in a game is how much you can prove that you're obsessed with it.
>>
>>96898997
Don't fall for his self-serving bait.
Everything he says is lies, just ignore him, especially when he pretends to disagree with himself just to have an excuse to try and pump out more lies.

So, i'm planning to start a sandbox hexcrawl campaign with my group using B/X with a little AD&D1e mixed in it

That being said, i'm torn between which setting to play in, since i don't want to write everything from the ground up, but i also want some "meat" on it to fall back to if i need.

Any recommendations? I've looked into Mystara so far (Northern Reaches and Karameikos), but the world seem to be very populated and civilized for a hexcrawl game.

I'm actually curious about what would happen if the two threads existed without any interference and just honest labeling. One thread being "OSR but 2e is not allowed" and no nonsense about an imaginary consensus, and the other thread being "OSR is pre-WotC style."

We've already seen periods of that happen, with the latter proving popular to the point where the troll's insistence that only one person prefers that was completely discredited. I think that's why the troll is now putting so much effort into trying to flood this thread, because he doesn't want the reality of the situation to become clear. A few months ago in the real /osrg/ an idiot started claiming UNIRONICALLY get if you use XP for gold players will start stealing dooknobs from dungeons, as an argument for the superiority of AD&D 2e over the first decade editions (OD&D, AD&D, B/X, B/E, Holmes).

It's one of many retarded takes he's been making for a couple years, some of which have been collected and immortalised by another Anon in this image. Most of them will probably be unclear to you, but each one of those is at least as retarded as the doorknobs thing.
>>

so its not even some esoteric meta game knowledge like doorknobs being disproportionally valuable to merchants in town?
its just some autistic argument against gold for xp?
this is so fucking stupid
>>
>>96900513
One of our regular (unfortunately) posters is a subhumanoid known as Fishfag, who believes OSR must fall (Dozens must die), because of /pol/shit.

As such he undermines the pillars of OSR gameplay any chance he gets, one of them being XP-for-gold, a perfectly reasonable way of players having control over exactly how fast they advance.
How far are you willing to risk going into the dungeon to try and find the next big steal, ect.
He, retard he is, claims XP-for-gold leads to shit like players stealing doorknobs and scraping dried goblin cum off the stonework for XP, as if any DM with half a brain isn't going to just go "Bro, behave."

>>96900590
The saddest thing about the entire situation is that there are legit times when the real treasure is the copper piping we pulled out the walls along the way.
You run across an adamantium door or some ancient dwarven writings and behold, that shit is right fancy valuable.
But he picks the most retarded arguments.
Ask how he got his nickname if you like for more proof.
>>
>>96900604
This is the same guy who kept repeating that the first decade is 1974-1984 and not 1974-1983 because he literally can't count to 10 on the tips of his fingers. He's got some serious psychiatric and developmental disorders.
>>
>>96900604
yes, i love storytime :)
also i can totally see stealing a fancy door as equivalent to stealing treasures like a large mirror or gold vase
>>
>>96900513
In the Tomb of Horrors, there's famously a set of doors made of Adamantine, an effectively-indestructible super-rare metal, with the intention being that players would not be able to simply break their way through. Adamantine doors show up in many other adventures, and over the years countless DMs have been faced with players recognizing the incredible value of those doors and doing their best to figure out how to remove the doors and transport them out of the dungeon, with players more than happy to destroy all the surrounding stone in order to get the several hundred or even thousands of pounds of metal worth more than its weight in gold.

Players stealing the doors from dungeons is just one of many things players do when their main motivation is to get as much treasure as they can. A lot of adventures include things like several hundred-pound statues and even include their value in GP because they understand players will pry them up and spend several minutes figuring out the logistics of transporting them back to town. Players taking everything that isn't bolted down, and even things bolted down like doors and doorknobs, is such a classic aspect of the game that DMs have to consider the value of things that they may have just tried to use as window dressing, sometimes literally. Silk Drapes? Those are worth 10gp per .5 lbs.
>>
>>96900634
>i can totally see stealing a fancy door as equivalent to stealing treasures like a large mirror or gold vase
Absolutely, but fishfag was talking about stealing normal brass doorknobs as if it were an actual thing that happens at first decade D&D tables.
>>
>>96900634
>also i can totally see stealing a fancy door as equivalent to stealing treasures like a large mirror or gold vase
If nothing else, one of my groups once stole a dwarven door to use as an improvised barricade/shield.
They turned it sideways and just plonked it down in the middle of any narrow corridor and braced behind it.
>>
>>96900634
>yes, i love storytime :)
Long story short
>Fishfag hates a game called ACKS for /polshit/ reasons
>Has spent the last 2 years refreshing the archives looking for any mention of ACKS so he can immediately shit up the threads with screeching claims about how it's boring, doesn't work, it'll touch your kids and feed your dog chocolate, ect, ect, so on, so forth
>For a while he was hooting and raving about how it's all charts for the sake of charts and there's no real use in any of the extra detail in the game
>Someone mistakes him for an honest actor and posts pic related story to try and explain that no, actually, some of the mechanics really smooth things out and allow for some neat emergent gameplay
>Fishfag immediately pretends not to get what it's about, declares it "Boring" and has a tantrum for the rest of the thread like the DM strapped one of his players down and read the entire rulebook verbatim while pegging the guy with a frozen kipper
>Everyone laughs at him and brings up the fish economics story to heckle him whenever he shows up from then while he keeps screaming boring since acknowledging what the story is actually about would be admitting he's wrong and a bad faith actor, an absolute Kobiyashi Maru if there ever was one
>Someone goes "Holy shit are you the Fishfag?" and the nickname stuck
>The DM who posted the story then went on to post his entire campaign log in a later thread leading to even more furious seething and screams of boring, bad story teller, worse than Hitler, ect, ect
It'd all be very funny if he didn't seem to be genuinely mentally ill.

>normal brass doorknobs
Doorknobs are not usually made of brass, and brass has value.
Remember that even in Gygax's first games, Ernie Gygax, who played Tenser, so famously tried to strip all the possible value out of a dungeon, down to the last copper coin, that Gary included a note about that in the spell that was made so Tenser could carry all the loot out.

It's also not mere stealing, it's looting, and adventurer's looting a dungeon down to its bones wasn't just encouraged, it had historical (in the form of soldiers completely desiccating conquered cities like a swarm of locusts) and even literary precedent. Hell, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser don't just steal a doorknob, they don't just steal a door, they don't even just steal a whole room, they steal a house.

>Players aren't feeling doorknobs to get extra XP.
Over the years, I've personally seen players try to take doors, doorknobs, door knockers, locks, manacles, chains, empty chests, statues of every size and shape, stained glass windows, tapestries, tapestry rods, basically just about everything. Some may have wanted them for possible utility, but a lot of these were definitely because in the worst case they could be sold for some (or even a lot of) gold, and some (like with fancy door knockers) may have been just to have some sort of souvenir.

Player kleptomania and item hoarding doesn't happen with every group, but it happens frequently enough that I don't know why you want to insist it never happens. You sound like you don't really have much experience playing with different people if you expect everyone to act the same.

I've been playing D&D for 30 years, weekly sessions the almost entire time, very different groups. And I've never once seen players stealing door knobs. I've seen them want to steal stuff like furniture etc, and then I remind them how extremely heavy it is compared to how valuable it is. Treasure is almost always significantly more optimal, and if they are so hard up that they are scrapping furniture for coppers, then they need to adventure somewhere else, or the DM needs to gently nudge them.
>Letting players make decisions is bad?
No, it's a good thing and it's how they learn lessons, but if you encourage and enable bad behavior at your game, you're going to get more of it.
Gently remind the players that they are welcome to drag those doors out of the dungeon, but they probably won't get much money for them, it will take them huge amounts of Labor to get them into town, and that they would be better off just looking for actual valuables.

>>96901426
>And I've never once seen players stealing door knobs.
Never even tried? I guess you were too busy telling them all the ways they can't play that you've sufficiently quashed any original or interesting ideas they might have. With many groups, just about anything I mention has the players considering possibilities of all kinds, and "take item" is a pretty obvious interaction with potential benefits.

Please notice I never said the players always succeeded at taking some random fixture or ultimately held onto all the items they took. Generally the plan seemed to be "fill up until encumbered, then start dumping the less valuable/heavier stuff for more valuable treasure if/when found". Often, the time/noise involved in taking some more fixed items would be what would discourage the players in the first place, and just mentioning how loud a heavy strike against stone was would get players to stop trying to loot something.

You're coming at this from a pretty bad faith perspective and attitude.

Tomb of Horrors was ORIGINALLY a tournament module. Since then, it's become not only a "general purpose" module, it's part of an adventure series chain.
Also, players trying to steal the adamantine doors was so well known, the 3rd edition version of the Tomb of Horrors replaced them with steel doors, and even included a note saying Acerak had replaced them from the adamantine ones because he was tired of adventurers stealing them.
