We had some players move from GW’s easiest game with vaguely similar mechanics (Warcry) to 40k. I don’t know if it’s the best way though. When it comes to pure model hobbying, walk in tutorials are probably easier.

Flirting with the idea of a highly-fluffy proxy list for a Tzeentch warband using Shadow Legion rules, where Be'lakor would be the FW Lord of Change (same size).
Basically, two LoC as anti-tank, most of the psyker leaders I can get, every daemon gets the -1 to hit protection and every CSM unit gets deep strike.
Thoughts?

>What is the best way to introduce the hobby to a new player.
Approach group of girls. Compliment one girl's nails (or multiple, if they have nicely painted ones). Ask if it's painted, airbrushed... explain that you enjoy painting and airbrushing too. But not nails, models. No, not like bodypainting, you have plastic models. Show her your pictures, ideally on instagram. Ask her if she wants to paint with you. No push, she knows your instagram. In 90% of situations you get contacted not by her but by one of the girls from the group, who find your Death Guard or Tyranids models nice and would be interested in painting jam.

If you mean hobby as playing, it's difficult. Not many of the girls that want to paint would want to play, sadly, no success here.

His numbers are based on the subset of his viewers that answer his polls, that means they're a pretty narrow demographic that don't necessarily represent GWs customer base at large. I think they represent the heavily invested enthusiast quite well, but not little Timmy's mom shopping for his birthday present.
But it shouldn't surprise that army boxes for re-launched favourites with new sculpts sell well to enthusiasts. They were also featured heavily by the various influencers, which again feeds into enthusiast attention.
GWs total sales numbers probably skew more towards smaller boxes and Space Marines.

Some funny patterns emerge if you take this data at face value. For example, 63150 games are played by space marines, while 79799 games are played by Chaos, 78875 are played by Xenos, and 54096 by other Imperium armies.
This actually makes Space Marines the 3rd most popular super faction and Chaos the most popular, despite SM being the most supported faction and Chaos the least supported one.
>28.9% Chaos
>28.6% Xenos
>22.9% Space Marines
>19.6% Imperium
>>
>>97130451
How do they count these data? Is it
>number of games with space marines in it
or
>number of space marines in games
if its the 1st, then marines vs marines (likely the most common matchup) counts as one.
If its the 2nd, then it counts as two
>>
>>97130222
I do not trusts auspex's data. Not because the data itself bothers me, but becuse he's british and I wish to fucking rip the vocal cords from every fucking dude on the earth who speaks like him. Its disgusting, I could tolerate jive before listening to something so fucking british.

>>
>>97130460

>>
>>97130458
I think it's by players registered to games. So a Marine v Marine match counts as two marine games played. Which is more accurate anyway if we are talking player numbers for each faction.
>>
>>97130459
he has an obvious speech impediment and should probably just use an ai voice to read his scripts.

Nice that is leading to the same kind of settings Im discovering on the phone. Minimum ISO and playing with shutter speed is already giving much better focus at full frame. Still having issues getting a good focus of squads but I think you splice multiple draw distances with software to get those better.
>>
>>97130471
people with speech impediments or insufferable voices should not go into a career that requires speaking in front of audiences
years ago there was a radio host here who had a stammer and his show was just completely unlistenable even though he was otherwise good at his job

Think of all that Chaos offers you. Think of the power and grandeur. Think of what you have built already, and what you could achieve if you let the Great Ocean pour through you and push wide your understanding. Think of what awaits you if you would just shrug off your dreary little feud and strike out to explore! You are the traitor, Chengrel! Traitor to the potential our forefathers saw in us when they turned their backs on the Emperor and led us out into the void! Think on that, Chengrel, and learn shame!’

>‘The Long War gives us meaning! The War is our purpose! Our primarchs swore it so! How dare you turn away from the pacts that they made before Horus and each other! Traitor! I name you traitor!’

>‘Soulless, substanceless little remnant of a man. The war is as good as won, and we are the victors! We who understand! The Imperium means as little to us as the tawdry ambitions of those who cannot bear to stop making war on it. The only losers in your precious Long War are those who are unable to let it go. You and your Imperium deserve one another. And yet you swagger in front of us demanding that we prove ourselves your equals? It is no small satisfaction to me that I could not do so. Summarises one of the reasons WHY Imperium is so shitty. It takes the mantality "why are we doing this this way? GW is in the gradual process of splitting the ranges of its systems
Eventually they want all products to belong exclusively to one range of one system
This means that the current demons kits cannot stay as products meant for both 40k and aos, so 40k is marginalising them so they can be detached completely and stay as only aos products

40k will likely end up having some newly designed 40k-specific demon kits for the various god-aligned legions, but it doesn't seem to be happening too soon, and it's unlikely such updates will be perfect continuations of the previous demon designs and archetypes, some might be new ideas and some of the old units might get no update at all

what does that mean for belakor and the demon prince kit? we can't know, maybe they'll be the rare exception, in this ordeal

Got the Dawn of War box for it was cheap, I don't normally play marines. I'm putting together Boarding Actions terrain and realized I can just grab a box of intercessors and have 470 points of models to play Boarding Actions with. Already decided on a paint scheme, which is going to be orange & black. About to grab some plasticard & compass cutter to make industrial bases. It's going to be a custom chapter with 0 named characters, I suppose having them Fleet Based makes the most sense. /mydudes/ going around space hulks, doing shit.
Wish me luck

Honestly the models are pretty dogshit, everything's monopose, mould lines are horrendous and pass through flat areas such as through the middle of shoulderpads, Judiciar's mask is dogshit etc. But for 29 Europoors it's 350 something worth of models so it's fine. Some would complain about the lack of weapon options that are available in the full kits, like giving one Eradicator a multi-melta or plasma on one of the bladeguard but I don't really care.
>>
>>97131031
It's a good thing there's so many days in the Christmas calendar, that way every space marine chapter can get their very own detachment.
>>
>>97131042
Bladeguard are the coolest thing in Space Marines, that Ancient is sick, the Judicar is wonderfully anime, that Chaplain model is fantastic but does need a skull helmet but those are easy to source, and the Eradicators are a little dull but at least they're big. It's basically every thing I like about Space Marine infantry in one box

But it's 40k, just fuckin steal one of the one billion pieces of official or fan art. Or use a screencap from SM2, or a picture of one of your own models.

Only buy when you know what you'll do with it. Not when you "have an idea" of what to do with it, when you

What you'll do with a kit.

Pro-tip 2:
That dream/perfect army? It takes time to figure out. Don't put all your eggs in the same basket and allow yourself to do armies you like, not love. Every army, everything you do in life, doesn't have to be the best thing you absolutely want.

You love chaos marines but don't know which legion to pick, or how to paint said legion? That's okay.

I have 5 armies at different levels of commitment right now, the thing that helped me out is to futureproof any paintschemes that I'd be doing so that no army shares the exact same "main" colors. For example, my armies right now are
>Salamanders (Green)
>Imperial Guard (Krieg Blue)
>Imperial Knights (House Orhlacc Purple)
>World Eaters (Red)
>Eldar (Iyanden Yellow)

I've then settled on a "main" color for each other potential army if I were to ever collect them
>AdMech - Metalica Bone White
>Sisters of Battle (Order of the Sacred Rose White)
>Custodes - Gold w/ Sapphire Blue highlights
>CSM - Iron Warriors Silver
>Orks - Goff Black
>Tyranids - Pink & Green)
>Tau - the original Ochre/Brown colorscheme
>Votann - Grey with hints of Cyan/Brown
>Genestealer Cults - Rusted Claw Orange/Grey
>Dark Eldar - Some sorta Blue/Green colorscheme, haven't really delved into them much

Is this autistic? Yes it is. Does it save me from having to figure out how I want to paint up my minis? Yes it does
>>
What if I like just a small part of an army? I enjoy Tau mecha suits, but don't like groots and planes and the small pathfinder soldiers. I like sisters of battle, but don't like the repentias and the whip boys. I like Drukhari ships and bikes and the mad science part, but don't like the half naked gladiator elves. Is it viable to use only part of an army, if I want to be just casual player?

I think it's best to branch out a little to balance an army even if you're leaning one way.

I like mecha tau a lot and I still fill out the list with a little variety, my list includes:
Farsight
Crisis Suits w/Commanders
Broadsides
Stealth Suits

But it also includes
Breachers
Pathfinders

And if I was going to expand to 2000 points, I'd definitely be adding Ghostkeels and more giant robots, but I'd also be adding Firesight teams and more infantry, as well as some transports.

Even if they're your second favorites or just filling out an army role, if you're going to play you should try not to pidgeonhole yourself too badly.

Putting hobby tutorials in the middle of a YouTube lore video essay seems like a strange choice that might see lorefags skipping through and hobbyfags not clicking the video initially. That said I like the idea a lot, it's sortve doing what a codex/white dwarf does in video form. You get a bunch of lore blurbs about a few subfactions, some model pics, and some painting tutorials. I hate the over-reliance on characters that plagues 10th, especially because of how boring they've been implemented overall. In 30k I can add a siegebreaker to access his phosphex ammo. In older editions of 40k I could add a psyker for a variety of utlity or damage powers, a specific character to unlock use of certain thematic units or to use their wargear such as meks using their kustom force field or have interesting niche rules like Snikrot giving a bunch of rules to kommandoes to be sneakier. Seems like in 10th every character just gives a re-roll, a +1 to hit/wound, lethal hits or devastating wounds and with no FOC there's no hard limit of 1-2 like before so sometimes it feels like you're handicapping yourself for not giving a character to almost every unit because why wouldn't you.

>They aren't out to make the game worse

>>97132460
NTA but it took AoS 2 years and a radical shift in direction to be profitable. Which is effort and resources they could have used to fix WHFB after mismanaging it (and the entire company) for a decade at that point. Let's not forget WHFB wasn't the only casualty, they cancelled every single game except 40k and MSBG (because they still had the rights but they stopped making anything new for it until 2018) and they were very ready to do the same for 40k until they reconsidered after seeing the incredibly bad reception of AoS at launch. So pretending the issue was something intrinsic to WHFB is pretty stupid.

This is what I mean about them just changing shit in an attempt to make the game better or more "interesting". But in the end it just making the game worse over all.
It's kinda like how one of GW's catch phrases for 10th is that "Simplified! Not simple" and "Less Rerolls", only to make the game more complicated and have more book keeping and then made rerolls even more common than before.

>>
>>97132521
>But I understand his point about giving every unit in 40k a unique role, it sounds cool on paper
I don't because it's fundamentally not how a wargame operates. You're making an army, it should resemble an army, not a collection of individual units you take for a specific random ability like a card game. You're building an army not a deck. You should take units mostly because of their intrisic qualities and wargear, not because of an abstracted unique ability. That's how it works in historicals for a reason.
>It's kinda like how one of GW's catch phrases for 10th is that "Simplified! Not simple" and "Less Rerolls", only to make the game more complicated and have more book keeping and then made rerolls even more common than before.
Well that too. Most of what they said in the 10th edition design articles was either a lie or straight up the opposite of reality. It was mad.
>>
>>97132493
The truth is that there was no fixing WHF.
What would could have fixed it is that GW stopped being retarded and lowered the barrier for entry. WHF died because armies became so god damn inflated that you had to shill out hundreds of €$ just to play the damn game, that is instantly going to turn off any new person to the game.
But since this is GW, it means they are retarded and they are quite literally incapable of accepting of lowering prices because the boomers at the top view it as them possibly making less profit.

Even though ironically enough, there's 100x more people who are willing to part with 20$ for box of 10 minis, than a guy who is willing to part with 50$ for the same box of 10 minis.
>>
>>97132507
>>97132525
>no arguments given
I don't get why you'd win by revising history? All I've stated were pretty easy to check facts. AoS did nothing to GW sales until mid 2016 when they added points back to the game and made a semblance of list building which is the complete opposite of the initial premise of AoS.

Not sure why you think that's any different in AoS. Outside of stupid rule changes in 7th and 8th that promoted gigantic bricks of units the modelcounts of most armies aren't very different with AoS. Your goblin or skaven army still has 120+ models.

I agree.
I'm just saying I can see where he is coming from with the appeal of "every unit has a role" thing. It sounds interesting, but in practise it's just not worth it like we have seen over the course of 10th edition.
Giving every unit/model their own special rule is beyond retarded and it is just a shittier version of the Universal Special Rules system from older editions.

It's basically just trying to reinvent the wheel. But instead of keeping it simple they add more moving parts and complexity, which obviously exponentially increases the points of failure which can and will fuck up the wheel.

>But instead of keeping it simple they add more moving parts and complexity, which obviously exponentially increases the points of failure which can and will fuck up the wheel.
I believe they simply don't understand that simplicity doesn't come from how easy to reference shit on a unit's datasheet is. It's about how the game is structured and how much you need to keep track of and memorize. They keep gutting the core rules edition after edition just to stuff datasheets full of abstracted stuff that no longer represents any physical reality and call it "simplified" because you can just check everything on the datasheet. And I hate it because they've shown they can still operate under the older, way better though, design structure with TOW and 30k or Necromunda.

My only guess is that they did that because they gutted wargear only 50% of units in the game and in the remaining 50% they made all of it free, meaning all list building has gone out the window. Same with game balance.
So as a compensator they added these unit specific special rules to try and make up for it.
>>
>>97132593
>Imperials do that too.
Nope
>>
>>97132600
I don't think it's surprising that a game that is given ten times less resources than AoS, isn't translated to 12 languages (so it's pretty dead outside of the anglosphere when WHFB was huge in places like spain, italy or eastern europe), cut the playable factions in two and then took them an entire year to start selling all the remaining playable factions 90% of which is still the same 20 year old models (or even older because AoS is using the "newer" versions of those kits, look at goblins) isn't drowning in money. And even then by their own admission it's profitable enough to increase the scope of the project.
I'm only saying that the issue was GW's management and not something intrinsic of WHFB that meant the game needed to die.

Most units don't even need those abilities. The point of a leman russ is to be a tank and have a big ass gun. Why the fuck does it need a gimmick on top of that? Special rules are useful to cover niche things that the core mechanics and stats of the game can't represent it's not something that every single unit needs. But if they keep dumbing down and deleting core mechanics of the game then of course they're gonna need something to replace it. But that's a slippery slope we don't want them to step into.

I find it easier to go second. If you go first you can do jack shit because nothing is visible and you still can't bring reserves. So unless you have some infiltrators and a lucky set of secondaries you just shuffle and wait.
>>
>>97132061
Yeah, I would've done exactly that, and I may end up coming back to them and enhancing them later, since it's just a hasty speed paint on a $10 unit (maybe ten minutes total on these), I didn't want to waste extra time. I also thought to myself, putting sandbags on the models is kinda pointless, rather than making sandbag based terrain that can actually function in the game to provide cover or whatnot. But I do appreciate your tips and I will use them when I start making said terrain pieces.

At my LGS, the WHFB died because the number of models you had to buy, build, and paint just to have a full army was fucking obscene no matter what army you picked. The game died before it even got off the ground here.

Turning regiments into specific units was a fucking awful decision. Regiments should just be like chapters, a reskin of the entire faction with maybe a few special unique units, it doesn't need to have their own version of infantry squads, command squads or heavy weapon squads.

Any game failing is literally always due to GW mismanagement rather than the fault of buying customers and nobody, especially not people here, want to confront this.
>>
>>97132889
Yeah and that's why it died in my area. They increased the amount of models you had to buy to have a full army and it was just too much for people that were also building up their 40k armies. It could probably happen to 40k but it's the golden goose so people will just keep buying.
>>
>>97132902

Oh it did. Since sales were way higher in the first place they still sold enough but the shitfest of free stuff 7th's formations gave made a huge dent for the exact same reason.

They can only do so much, because there are lots of Games Workshop stores where there's just not enough standing space for too many models on the table to be viable. They're better off trying MTG-style rotation instead if they want their greed to get the better of them.

I would say something like "Imagine the models you worked so hard on becoming unviable because they're tailoring the rules to fit some business model" but that's already the case.
>>
>>97132921
Same shit with votann. It's weird really. I remember when they were about to launch 9th they said they were raising points costs across the board to try and make armies smaller. And they did, and armies in 9th were like 20% smaller than late 8th. But after that they kept lowering point costs again and again even after 10th and it's gotten completely out of hand. We're now playing with what used to be 2500+ points on smaller, way denser boards than what were used to play 1500 points.
>>
>>97132953
I haven't really bothered much with 10th because my 9th army ended up going way under in points and I didn't want to be arsed with building a horde ad mech army. Also hate that the tables keep getting smaller.
>>
>>97132951
There's also more specifically the subset of "we're either gonna make a lot of your models either non-tournament legal or just outright not have datasheets anymore" which was done to Space Marines and Stormcast Eternals, the latter of which haven't even been around that long. To this day I'm still not surprised our local AoS scene died as fast as it did when the new edition released.
>>
>>97132968
I still don't get what the reasoning for the smaller boards was. If they were trying to sell people into their own mats and they wanted a proprietary size I'd at least get it but they just don't sell them.
>>
>>97132974
It's honestly crazy how they just wiped out entire swathes of the stormcast line. 40k kind of underwent some of that too, especially with how they've forcibly divided the HH and 40k model lines.

>>97132985
It seems artificially small like they're trying to cram it into more of a boardgame format. Then again, entire parts of the game have been abstracted towards that. I'm guessing they're trying to engineer some really strict standards but it kind of meddles with it being a wargame.

Nah this is how you make a 40k Fightan game
>No pre-existing named characters, all new faces or generic templates
>Tactical Marine (All-rounder character that's good for beginners, basically the Ryu of the game. Ultramarines default colors but recolors are other loyalist chapters like Salamanders, Crimson Fists, Blood Ravens, etc)
>Terminator (Slow, heavy weapons fighter, Blood Angels colors by default but includes Imperial Fists, Iron Hands, etc)
>Bladeguard (Swordfighter, Dark Angels as default colors, Black Templars as P2 colors)
>Guardsman (single Krieg rifleman with shovels and grenades, lowest HP Pool of the cast & has artillery strikes as a Super)
>Sister of Battle (Flamer-based projectile fighter that gains faith mid-match to gain boosts)
>Custodes (Tanky spear fighter that takes minimal knockback from moves)
>Tech-Priest (Puppet fighter that controls a Servitor to aid in mixups, super summons a Knight)
>Howling Banshee (Rushdown fighter with a lot of air-dashes)
>Sybarite (Whip fighter that uses an Agonizer
>Warboss (The game's dedicated Grappler)
>Stealth Suit (Basically a shooty ninja)
>Kroot Hunter (Fast rushdown character, gains buffs on each round win to represent eating its prey)
>Tyranid Warrior (Another melee dude, maybe give his blades some sort of poison mechanic)
>Reductus Saboteur (Fights by setting up traps for screen control)
>Einhyr Champion (Shortking with a hammer, what's not to like)
>Skorpekh Destroyer (Big HP hitsponge of a character)
>Legionary (Tweaked version of the Tactical Marine, basically the Ken to the former's Ryu)
>Khorne Berzerker (Melee CSM fighter)
>Exalted Sorcerer (Ranged CSM fighter)
>Daemon Prince (Boss character, storymode main villain)

Marines get three reps because they're the posterboys, every other faction/race gets one rep with more as DLC later down the line.

I think they should add FEAR to the core rules as well. -1 to leadership for being near monsters, titanic units, and of course CHAOS SPAWN

>>97133450
Righteous
>>
>>97133741
That would get pretty convoluted real fast. That's why the core rules have stuff like USRs to define those mechanics. It's best if they incorporate morale effects as a core mechanic and then they just write a single word like routed or surpressed when they want to use it instead of having to define and explain it every single time.

Instead of squatting firstborn, GW should have abandoned 40K and created Warhammer 41,000, which is when new tech like hover tanks and Primaris emerged.
11th edition is 99% guaranteed to be a shitfight on release and I fully expect multiple armies to be soft-squatted, forcing players to rebut their armies.
As a long term player I am no longer interested in having hundreds of dollars worth of models rendered unplayable because GW board of directors would have to get a slightly cheaper variety of hookers and blow otherwise.

NTA but Chaos Daemons and Deathwatch are still on an index and are not getting a codex in 10th. They will likely be removed in 11th. Although this isn't a guarantee, there are patterns with how GW handle armies across its games (Beastmen removal from AoS to cram it into Old World, for example) that suggest this is the path they'll take. Assuming they've depleted stock to their satisfaction, remaining firstborn marines tactical squads, devastator squads, and possibly anything based on the rhino chassis) will disappear with the Space Marine codex at/near launch of 11th.
