Wouldn’t count as a WIP since I finished it in November, but I had a great time bringing this unreleased necron lord back to life. The most painstaking part was pinning the left arm, but otherwise it was a smooth process.

I reverse engineered a ceramic-style bone scheme I used on an old army box lord that I actually posted in one of these threads back in 2015. I made a few improvements and documented everything to use on some of my other old ‘crons later.

>>
>>97787675
I think 2d is helpful.
But mini painting is also helpful because you are observing light and then painting that. Doing more art things from different perspectives will always give you more perspectivd and practice, so go ham

2d art doesnt let you practice great brush control though, because in that you often draw from the shoulder rather than the fingers and wrists

All art is helpful to one degree or another, all depends on how you use it. Things like album covers can be good inspiration for color choices, old oil painting can inspire style choices, some techniques can be adapted (maybe not 1 to 1) and be used, etc. Art is such a personal thing, inspiration can come from anywhere.

Honestly not really sure what 'designed by' means in this context. Like, I like the nekogalaxy figures, but his role seems to just be to find concepts he likes, hire a third world 3d sculptor to make them, and then hire a mould/casting contractor, and hire a painter to do the official box art paint job. Like I don't know what HE does other than show up to cons to trick people into going to the booth with his tatted up alt gf.

2d techniques are useful in certain situations, mostly where you are trying to depict something that isn't actually reflected in the 3d model. like if you want to make the straps on a harness look like they're woven nylon but the actual plastic is smooth, or if your wizard is holding a crystal ball and you want it to look like real crystal but there's no convenient way to cut it off and replace it with a transparent part. the idea that miniatures have to be painted like illustrations or that light doesn't work the same at some unspecified scale is total bunk though.
>>
>>97789433
nta, you can get them cheap as fuck on aliexpress or similar sites, i'm gonna guess they are spent too, or the watch they were for is...well, in the next base over
i would more worried about them bulging or something
>>
>>97789537
the further you go for quality in miniature painting the closer it will take from 2d art. You're not gonna get display tier skin textures, textiles, leathers or freehand without it.
>>
>>97789642
I don't remember who it was, but in a recent video I heard a person say with warhammer sized things generally less is more, but with busts more is definitely more.
Of course it still follows that you want to work from large to small, so it should already look good before you get around to tinier details.

My friend's a jeweler and kept shitty watches to the side for me. I stripped them for cogs and dials for my Skaven. These parts were the more techy looking bits I had leftover after stripping a bunch of junky electric watches.

>>97789433
They were free to me but don't think the little watch batteries are too pricey

>>97789569
I was thinking about the bulging or some venting, gonna roll the dice and hope for the best. Those watch parts all had such nice shapes made for them it was too hard to resist popping them in
>>
>>97787675
I personally think practicing drawing helped me a lot with miniature painting, even if indirectly. Fine motor control and skills like observation are very transferable, and color choice too. As stupid as it sounds, I stuck to the style of flat colors + washes for way too long...
>>
>>97789642
that's wrong. the more you paint your 3d thing like 2d the more 2d it will look. consider that daniel craig space marine someone posted in the last thread. it looked good, but did it actually look like daniel craig in a space marine suit? no, it looked like a painting of daniel craig in a space marine suit. you will never obtain that "real thing but shrunken" look when you are approaching the entire project with 2d techniques.
>>
>>97789569

I fell for Nightshift shilling VMS stuff and bought their primer. It's really fucking good, and will probably become my primer of choice.

>PROS:
Easily the best coverage out of all airbrush primers I've ever tested (Vallejo, AK, Citadel, Stynylrez).
Dries fast (~2 hours before you can paint over it).
Surprisingly durable. Airbrush primers are fragile, VMS is surprisingly tough.
Don't need to thin it all, you can use it straight from the bottle.
Smooth AS FUCK finish, probably the nicest I've seen.

>CONS:
If not thinned, you need to clean up the needle fairly often, definitely more often than the brands I mentioned above.
The final cleanup takes a bit longer, as the paint starts drying fast.

I've bought their varnish and some of the basing materials, and will test them in a couple of days, too.
>>
>>97790396
Nice! I don't really feel a need to try another primer after taking the mr surfacer pill but it's always good to be aware of alternatives. What sort of basing stuff do they make?
>>
>>97790481
They make fuckload of stuff. I bought their "Smart Mud" which is supposedly excellent for doing ground sculpting (like tank tracks) and some textures (rocks, extra fine sand, etc.). It should arrive sometime next week.
>>
>>97790396
Do you happen to have the kalido colorworks primer? My brother really likes that one and says its leagues better than vallejo or monument hobbies. I myself like the stynylrez as a brush-on primer cause sometimes I just want to be quick.

Funnily enough, I voted for the new unit option but I decided to have some fun with this one and depict the Months of Shame with a Red Hunters Dreadnought. Honestly, I don't really care about decalfag and I'm not really interested in causing him to sperg out, even though he inevitably will.

Okay, stupid question - if I have large models like tanks or planes, how I'm supposed to hold them for painting? If I would glue some holding rods to the belly of a tank, these areas would stay unpainted but if I would take off turret (since many scale models have rotating and thus detachable turrets) and glue rod inside, I would have to paint upside down, which is somewhat confusing.

Minor update on the ram. Still a lot of weathering to do, a lot of shading and the like as well. Planning on using texture paste on the wheels and lower parts of the ram with some pigments and other added effects to make it look like it's in use or seen recent use. All in all I'm pretty happy with the way it's taking shape. The metallic paint on the iron banding around the wheel and across it went on sort of rough as a result of brush priming the styrene. I'm just going to take those rough spots and cover them with some mud, and then with others exploit them and turn them into rust and wearing on the iron itself.

Gonna use AK true metal wax as a finishing touch on the banding, maybe I'll give a quick look at how to use it. Under exploited and under rated product imo. Its a wax based "paint" that you can polish and buff to a realistic finish. The thing that sets it apart aside from that is the fact that it is made using actual metal pigment of some sort. Not sure exactly how they do that or what it means, but the difference is dramatic and undeniable. For a weathered piece like this it's really great for using as a highlight and strategically to simulate the less worn parts of the iron to create serious depth. It really stands out from the mud and duller metallics so it should look pretty cool when its done, contrasting with the duller colors of the wood and mud, sod roof etc.

Not exactly. The pigments they use in contrast-like paints are translucent so they tint the surfaces. If you just add contrast/speedpaint medium to a regular acrylic you'll get something a lot more opaque that will behave in a similar manner - it will stick to flat surfaces more than a wash.

Yeah, it's always something, isn't it?
I think the main issue is just that you're doing like a REALLY heavy black line on the inside of the eye, You should have a bit of a dark line to separate, but only subtle and more skin-toney than black.
If it's supposed to be like an eye liner thing, it should still be more subtle and then simulate the eyelashes+liner by going out further rather than going in like that.
I would recommend something like picrel.
It depends on the geometry of the eye sculpt too. Sometimes models aren't always friendly to nicely painted eyes or small features.
I only did kind of the minimum eyelashes in the example since I don't know what you are going for with her.

If nothing else I would just make the big black line more subtle.

I understand what you have in mind but I'm afraid I cannot achieve necessary precision. Even if this print is quite big (15cm in size, not a bust). In meantime I kinda fucked up skin, phone cannot catch it properly but there are rather ugly "scratches" instead of smoth lines and I cannot really overcome it as it always happens when I try to paint faces or skin in general.

I have a small but noticeable tremor that makes painting smaller models difficult but not impossible. GW have been shoving so many details in some areas of their models it makes it hard for me to not make mistakes, and being that I like CSM it's worse.
I've been having a blast painting my Chaos Knight, I feel like I'm making progress and I don't have to try and navigate around poses to reach compact areas full of details. I'm making a lot of progress and it looks good without fucking around cleaning mistakes constantly.

now that models are crisper you get shit like slapchop and speedpaints where people rely on the model quality to fill in for missing paint skills.

Edge highlighting came later, if you try to edge highlight a potato model the line would be super wide.
You actually see more volumetric highlighting and blending, as well as freehanding, in the potato era because they used the blank spots as a canvas.
>>
>>97796034
>used the blank spots as a canvas.
That's one of the things that makes painting these mechs a joy for me.
Plenty of panel lines, but vehicles lend themselves to monocolor, so using the entire thing as a blank canvas works.
Obviously I don't always go all in like with the rose ones, but the freedom is there, not like with 28mm humanoids where X% is flesh, eyes are eyes no matter what, same for hair, pouches, etc...

I've never attempted this so take this with a grain of salt. I would do the face then glaze the veil over it. One, I feel it would be easier to do in general than trying to figure your face highlights and shadows while also accounting for the veil on top. Two, mixing your paints may very well dull down the color to something you don't want.

I just started painting some Napoleonic miniatures for the first time and I'm absolutely dismayed at how much harder it is than Warhammer. All the details are so much smaller and finer, there is tons of tiny trimming and lace that if you fuck up it just looks totally wrong. One model is probably taking me 4x as long as I'm used to. It's frustrating thinking you're a pretty decent painter after a decade with Warhammer painting and then getting such a reality check. It's like if you were playing a video game and just when you feel like you mastered the game you realize you've been playing on easy mode the entire time.

Yes, you just put the turret on top of the hull, it has a hole in the top cover to keep it in place. It's a bit loose, so it might fall off if you shake it around too much, but I don't think you need to do anything about it.

I'm telling you how it works, anon. Why do you think it has access to real world photos taken under perfect light? The only tool that comes close is Stahly's, and I don't think it has access to it. Every time I tried using Gemini/GPT/Grok for that use, it gave me nonsense, because it only has access to in-store photos, manufacturer's swatches, or even those retarded online color matching tools. Just ask it, it will link you these, too.
I'm sure that it can help in some rare cases, but I wouldn't depend on it at fucking all. Especially if you can just use your eyes (and Stahly's swatch).
>>
>>97798854
NTA. I believe you. My issue is that what you're doing isn't hard, you just aren't even trying to do it without following AI's instructions. You need to build confidence and just put some stuff on the palette and get mixing and experimenting.
>>
>>97798902
I have a hard time with colors, especially pinning down exact hues. I have the same problem with musical notes, I cannot identify a note at all. they blend together.

Having a way that can aim me in the right direction without having to mix paints adhoc with only vague ideas of how to shift a hue with pigments and experimenting with materials instead of having a starting point to work from makes a huge difference. Sure with experience or with a good eye you don't have to consult an outside party and you'd paint faster. but for plebs or beginners its a huge boost.

But 3D printing is not widely available. I mean, you can buy printer for reasonable price (sort of, it won't make you go bankrupt but it's not exactly cheap) but for miniatures you need resin one and it's not something you can keep in your living room or at your home anyway due to all those fumes produced, cleaning of prints in acetone and so on. It's something you can only set up in basement/garage and under ventilation hood and that alone restrict potential userbase (in case someone would object, let me remind you that outside of US most people live in apartment blocks).

It's not even the same color family, anon. Then again, this is what happens when you use AI that has no access to actual real life photos (taken under neutral light).

>>97798953
>acetone
No.
>you can't keep it in your home, because I know fuckall about things I'm writing long posts about
If you can buy a 3D printer, you can also buy a growbox or something similar. Even a cheap chink one will work fine. Then you can make your own air system from a tube and old computer fan. Or, you can buy the most basic bitch air filtration for a couple of USD. That way, you can keep VOCs in nice levels. I wouldn't personally say to keep it in your kitchen or living room, because while you can easily filter 99% of VOCs during printing, you will also need to clean that shit somewhere. And that can get messy, especially if you fuckup.
tl;dr if you have a spare room, you can print in the apartment block completely fine.
t. actually own a 3D printer in a commie block.

try doing some digital kit bashes, or else look for multi-part kit STLs (they do exist). The hobby is still there, it's just what you make of it.

For better or worse, the heavy focus on competitive 40k means most people buying and painting models are doing it to make them presentable game pieces as quickly as possible, so a pre-assembled STL and speed-paints are going to appeal a lot more to those players.

I recently decided to try painting with only regular paint. No pre-mixed washes or speedpaints, no airbrushing or underpainting, and very limited use of metallics. Not for the "challenge" or anything, but try and find the fun in painting again, and I did enjoy it actually. You might try similar for yourself, but you don't need to draw the line where I did.

Okay, I reviewed this Stahly's swatch.

And its not a solution for me. It tells me which color i have to buy, and how it paints which is useful. But it does not tell me how to get to a colour using the limited colours I have on hand. I still think my post has merit as a tool in addition to what was provided as alternatives.

If i had time and money to buy all the paint on stahly's and never have to worry about mixing paint again then sure, but right now as a quick and easy hack that gets me close enough, which is all I want when painting miniature toy soldiers I think my post was perfectly acceptable and did not deserve the hate that it got.
>>
>>97799630
>and learn to mix your own paints like a normal person

ah yes, instead of a solution that i can use now, that will get me started on learning how to mix paints, instead I should spend years of trial and error and cost in materials and time, just to get me to the same point I could just start at today, and then start learning from that point today?

>>97799541
AI won't just give you 20 years of experience on a plate either. It just tells you you got it spot on, good job, you're a real painter now! And you so desperately want to have found this really clever shortcut, so you believe it.
Don't take this as some kind of knee-jerk reaction to new technology either. As another anon pointed out far up the comment chain, the AI simply doesn't have good information available to it about how your paints look or how the paint you want looks. So even if the AI was straight up perfect when it comes to figuring out the mixing, it still can't give you a really good recipe. Depending on what you have and what you want it may also simply not be possible to mix a really good match, something the AI is unlikely to tell you unless you bring it up yourself.

Of course, you already know all of this. Which is why you went from the AI's mixes being perfect to them just needing to be better than your attempts the moment you had the slightest pushback. But between the AI reassuring you that it's all fine on one hand, and your own fear of doing it wrong on the other, you're just too terrified of doing things on your own. And so the training wheels stay on, and you never get started on those twenty years of practice that you want to savour the fruits of.

>have colors A, C, D, and E
>need color B
>check the swatch to get actual painted on look of it
>shit, A and C might work
>mix them, get B
That's literally it. If you are not aiming for some historically accurate color (in which case, you might wanna just buy new paints made under the standard), this is how you get a proper color.
The problem with using AI for this kind of thing is that it DOES NOT have access to how the actual paints look. See picrel. Left is from the Citadel website, right is Stahly's. How accurate do you think the AI will be when it only has access to the left side? And this is not even the most outrageous difference, Citadel swatches are fairly okay, but other brands are often a lot wilder.

okay I get this.

But I'm painting a 3rd rank toy soldier for a game, and was just sharing how I was able to color match a color from some fan art. I didn't have an exhaustive list of colours.

I tried 8 other ways, trying to learn it myself first. i did the leg work. but in the end I asked the ai and got a colour that was much closer to my target colour than any of my 8 attempts.

I was excited and I shared my excitement.

I'm not looking for a perfect 1:1 match, I'm looking for something that satisfies me. Something that could help other people like me who are struggling to match a colour. maybe its not perfect but maybe it can get you closer to target.

>>97799754
I don't use ai to praise or validate me. while I am narcissistic, as a failing, I would not seek such shitty praise.

My intention with posting was to share a quick way that yielded better results than an hour of experimentation. It was not about how ai said my painting was great, It wasn't about how AI methods were superior, Just how it could be helpful.
and I get called a liar, and people dog pile on a poorly painted example about how its not TOP TIER PERFECT, all because what? I used Ai to help tell me to mix 4 parts pink to 1 part purple.

Wait wait wait, add black to desaturate, and THEN add white to make it brighter? I guess whatever reddit post the AI is misquoting forgot to mention that white also desaturates.
Absolute fucking fundamentals, and the AI can't even keep track of that.

>>97798967
>like i said, I'm retarded when it comes to colours.
Yeah, that's the thing, isn't? You're not actually using the AI to figure out how to mix the paints, you're using the AI to have paint mixes that someone else (or in this case something else) claims are good since you're simply too convinced that you can't do it yourself.
>>
>>97799798
>I'm looking for something that satisfies me
Sure, but that's kinda different from claiming AI gave you a perfect solution, isn't it? Also, what other anon mentioned; it also gets the fundamentals wrong, which translates into you learning incorrect things from the get go.

>>97799802
All manufacturers are like this, some are even worse than GW (Vallejo, but even AK has some truly baffling ones). That's why virtually ALL online swatches are useless. And why AI approach will only ever produce subpar results at best.
>>
>>97799811
But you're assuming things. I was convinced i could do it myself, I tried 8 times to get to the same color value using mixes, and even glazes and washes and was getting frustrated. I think the problem was I was using too much of the the wrong purple and blue.

I went to ai out of frustration and in 4 minutes was surprised at howmuch better it did than me.

I've mixed my own colours before and Even my main army while not painted well to a high standard that i would never enter into a painting competition, it used a custom green color that i mixed myself as well as a glaze.

I was just having trouble with this particular shade of pink because i'm not used to painting pink.

But everyone assumes i'm using ai to praise me for my painting skills and to remove all critical thinking from painting a toy soldier, in such a high and mighty attitude its bordering on satirical.
>>
>>97799842
I'll be honest, i didn't even read that part of the ai's response. I just went straight to see its first recommended color combo.
>>
>>97799842
Why is it so difficult for manufacturers to have at least somewhat accurate online swatches? It's not like Stahly is some visionary. All he really did is take pictures of dried paint in neutral light. This can't be a difficult concept for a major manufacturer of paint to grasp.

Slight formula changes or changes of materials if there is a shortage (or to reduce costs), different sources of raw materials/suppliers, age of the paints, even different times of bottling (the paint on the top of the mixer could be slightly different than the bottom once it gets to bottling). Not to mention different monitors/phones/etc. showing slightly different shades or hues of the same color differently, even people's eyes seeing and processing colors differently. Lots of little things that can affect it.
>>
>>97799854
it's another hobby tax. major paint manufacturers like sherwin williams and dupont do have paint chits and sample charts.
>>
>>97799983
And if you're buying it in bulk to say paint a house they can mix the color in house for you to ensure that its uniform across the whole batch. Used to get that we'd order sail white for example for our interiors and it would be slightly different from house to house, a little more beige on one or lighter in another between batches.
