Both pairings are fundamentally about idealistically believing it can be overcome, much the same way as Sunny overcame his past and himself and much the same way we believe they will mend their friend group after the revelation. Also the creator's a fujoshi so I'm 100% on it being intentional and not a Sam & Frodo thing.
