Unless you get all the settings just right, upscalers do just stretch the image. Or put another way, they add detail in all the wrong places. Instead of the fur looking nicer and the eyes looking sharper, it adds a 7th finger and turns the belly button into an anus. For most people it takes a lot of practice to figure out how to wrangle the settings to have it actually improve an image.

If you go to the extras tab you can do a "plain" upscale and see what it does for the image. Here, have a comparison of Nomos vs SIAX vs Nickelback. Nomos is very clean, SIAX adds significant dotting (which doesn't usually but CAN mess stuff up when you're doing img2img later) and Nickelback makes things a bit blurry.Then AFTER this upscale pass you hit it with a low denoise img2img on the whole thing. Strikes a good balance between detail and resolution without needing to worry about the tiling fucking up. Sorry for using you as an example, the gen isn't bad but you did hit a pitfall in the upscaling process.

So it just gets that chunk of the upscaled image to img2img and it does it's best. But because it's doing a whole bunch of img2img passes separately from one another the results can (and typically will) vary per tile. If at all possible I would try to avoid using tiled upscaling and just find the max resolution you can comfortably do a FULL img2img pass on without running out of VRAM or the model completely fucking shit up and stick to that as you max "detailing" resolution.

If you put in the width/height manually it's easy to make mistakes and get a stretched image.
