>>217191033I always assumed that part of why you're meant to hate them is that the situation they're in and the amount of time that has elapsed DOESN'T justify their actions, hence why they're antagonists and not just tragic victims of circumstance. What I find more unrealistic is that a highly competent british army unit (or at least presumably competent given they're the only ones that managed to survive) would resort to such cruelty in the first place. If you really want an explanation for their actions that isn't just "men bad and rapey" I'd argue a much better justification could be that the major believed his men needed some form of encouragement / (sexual) relief in order to stop them from going completely nuts and thus maintain the combat effectiveness of the unit. Which as horrific as it is for the women isn't entirely a wrong idea.
