I think simplifying his character because you politically disagree with the film does a disservice to the writing and character development that was present.He even specifically says to Leo at the supermarket when he crosses paths with him, "I LOVE Black girls," emphasizing the word "love." It is halfway done to fuck with Leo, but in his own way, I think he really means it. He also defends her to her daughter later when she badmouths her, even defending her worldview ("she fought the weak") which he is supposed to be extremely ideologically opposed to. The flowers, too, I think were genuine. It's juxtaposed by his brutal character, but it hints that there is an inner softness, like deep down he's a scared little boy. That's not a new archetype for a character such as this.The way the camera holds on him in the crematorium, like he's in Hell, gives off a melancholy feeling, although he did deserve it as soon as he agreed to let his daughter be killed, that was the tipping point. He had a choice after finding out she was biologically his daughter, to either choose her or the society, and he chose poorly. The society didn't value him as a human being, while something like family would. In the end, he's a lost soul. Evil, yes, but there was potential there for him not to be.
