I was just thinking about this: if someone dies of natural causes at 102, no one really gets sad. It’s more like, “Oh, he accomplished so much and lived a full life.” But if a baby dies at 2, it’s tragic, because they didn’t even get the chance to do anything. So there must be some point where this perception flips. If you’re familiar with the Sorites paradox, it’s basically that, but applied to years lived.And if this number exist, it’s probably different for everyone. If someone’s life goal is to work on curing cancer or exploring space, it makes sense that they’d want to live as long as possible so they can master their field and push it forward in ways that wouldn’t be possible in a shorter life. Same for someone who wants a big family and seeing his grandchildren grow up. Meanwhile, if someone doesn’t want kids, has no friends, no major career ambitions, or even meaningful hobbies, what’s the point of that person living as long as possible? Are they going to live to 102 just to spend more hours playing League of Legends and working as a janitor? That doesn’t make much sense to me. So why shouldn’t that person be allowed to end their life at 40, 50 or whenever they want? If they’ve already done what they wanted and don’t plan to experience anything new, why should they be forced to stick around until their body decides their time is over?
