Hot take, I really like what they're doing with the show. The initial book it's based on is meant to be an unreliable recollection of different narrators taking us through a highly divisive historical event. There's no way that Mushroom, or the Maester, or any of the sources could be wholly unbiased in their telling of events. As such, the show acts as an interesting intertextual playoff towards the book itself. The audience is given a series of events actually depicted as having happened via the show, and another interpreted by different sources and spun into propaganda for latter generations via the book. It's a great play on how history is actually conducted, books omitting things the authors wouldn't know about and all, and I'm a fan.

The show did improve some scenes from the books with some minor twists in the events or dialogues. One of the best examples of that is the scene in which Oberyn tells Tyrion about the time he visited Casterly Rock with his sister and saw Cersei bully his baby cock. The timing of that scene is much better in the show than in the book.
