>>203715149Lola Montes is only two hours long and I already saw it anyway
What is /film/s opinion on Tarantino?
>>203715181
>>203715204Lola Montes is just filtering people because they don't expect maximalism in a french voice. They demand it gritty, handheld and black and white. They demand jump cuts and irony. They demand menage-a-trois and slice of life realism. They are utterly filtered by Lola Montes because they want to put french cinema in a box.
>>203715304Nice way to admit that Lola Montes is the only 50s French film that you've seen.
>>203715304Nothing to be filtered by, it's kinda like saying "you got filtered by the soap opera"
I made it my mission this year to watch 50 of the top rated movies of all time just to say I've actually watched them. I'm going to be honest, bros, I don't think I like /film/ movies that much. Unfortunately this marathon came at a time where I've started watching YouTube videos in x2 speed so now slow movies like Tokyo Story feel like paint drying. Meanwhile a lot of them are impossible to speed up by much because I can't read subtitles that fast.I had fun though. I do enjoy stepping outside of my usual genres.

>>203715420Filmwatching is hard work. It's not for everybody.
>>203715368>>203715353The onus is on you to tear down, not on me to defend an established classic. There is no way that Lola Montes is 6/10 but Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is 7/10 as you probably have in your Letterboxd profile.
>>203715537NTA, but Beetle Juice itself is 5.5/10. And I'm sure the 35-years-later sequel will be worse.
>>203715531we know who are the real villains
>>203715420They are old films in an old artform that no longer speak to the 21st century psyche. How much longer can we all just watch the same 50 movies? These are for boomer not a modern man such as yourself. This is why we badly need a new artistic movement, whether it be in VR, videogames, or AI. Of course cinema will remain as a stepping stone to these new artforms, but it will primarily be for historical artifact purposes.
>>203715420Bait made me chuckle, anyway, ratings plus commentary (only on what I've seen):>Come and See - good, but overrated as fuck. The Ascent turbomogs>Shoplifters - hated this shit, maybe filtered>Shawshank - overrated by plebs, underrated by /film/>Paris, Texas - overrated but good>Donnie Darko - all time comfy movie, have watched it like 7 times. Barrymore, Malone and Maggie are so hot in it. 3D SFX suck major dick.>Eternal Sunshine - dogshit>TWBB - actually, I don't think it's overrated at all>TGTB&TU - overrated, for sure>12 Angry Manes - kinda dumb plot, good enough movie>2001 - amazing>Lawrence - is the shit>Godfather - top 100 for sure>Mulholland - works better as a comedy>Kane - top 100>400 Blows - absolute pinga>Cure - amazing>Harakiri - super overrated, but hiya! I guess>Eraserhead - filtered>Seven Samurai - amazing>Apocalypse Now - amazing, filtering machine on /film/, apparently>Requiem for a Dream - very meh>High and Low - top 50>Passion of Joan of Arc - overrated as fuuuuuuuuck>Chinatown - based>Solaris - le trash>Yi Yi - top 20>Andrei Rublev - top 5>Seventh Seal - top 1>Stalker - boring>Mirror - boring, pink skies
>>203715537Just as I said yesterday, established classics are questionable. And Lola Montes was established as a classic by who? Cahiers? People hated the film on release, critics also did. After the initial bad reception, some critics started showing mixed reviews, and contemporarily the film has gotten cult status. I think the film's place in the canon is shaky, as even supporters of the film such as Ebert couldn't help but notice the failures contained in the movie, such as Martine Carol's terrible acting. All and all, Montesfags are the ones that should prove to the world "why" the film is supposed to be so amazing, as many have seen it and got pretty much nothing other than pretty postcard cinematography and some colorful sets out of it.
>>203715620>New artistic movementIdeas? I think violence is the path
>>203715537There is nothing to tear down, because there's nothing to analyze, objective facts tell us that Lola Montes is barely an Ophuls picture and very much a producers picture. Producers demanded Ophuls to shoot in color, which he was overwhelmed by. Producers imposed the non-entity lead actress on Ophuls, who he didn't know what to do with. Producers demanded rewrites, meddled in shooting and did their own recuts. It's a very vacuous film, not in the ennui-spleen sort of way, which Ophuls self-reflexively and playfully utilized before, it's just empty, awkward, disoriented, lacking the axis of la ronde because the axis of the film - Lola Montes - very visibly lacked a soul.
>>203715508It is, but it's still considered THE movie by normies.
>>203715840>the axis of the film - Lola Montes - very visibly lacked a soul.>It's a very vacuous film, not in the ennui-spleen sort of wayThis dude gets it
>>203715795The new artistic film movement will be a combination of cinema, VR, film, and AI. YOU will be the character in the movie. Film will seem like a cheap toy compared to the immersion that is coming our way.

>>203715620>Avatar and Avatar 2 will be seen as "classic cinema" 50 years due to their "revolutionary technology", "perfect cinematography" and "awe-inspiring environmental message". Any neo-zoomer that finds the movie boring and the script lacking will be dismissed as "filtered" or "you'd had to be there at the time".
>>203715776>>203715840Dismissing Lola Montes as purely a "producers' picture" is an oversimplification that ignores the nuance of its legacy. Yes, the film faced significant interference during production—color was imposed, and Martine Carol was not Ophuls' first choice. First, it's crucial to acknowledge that many masterpieces initially faced rejection. Public and critical reception often evolves as cultural contexts shift and people gain more tools to appreciate what was once misunderstood. In the case of Lola Montes, its pioneering use of color, elaborate camerawork, and structural innovation were ahead of its time. Its visual style, with the fluid, circular movements, is quintessential Ophuls, contributing to the film's dreamlike, almost theatrical presentation of history and memory. As for the argument that the film "lacked a soul" because Carol's performance was weak—this criticism is valid but doesn't necessarily negate the film's artistry. Ophuls' intent was to portray Lola as a figure of history commodified, viewed from a distance, and Carol's detachment, whether by design or accident, serves this purpose. The emptiness you describe could be part of the thematic core—Lola, an enigmatic woman shaped by others' perceptions, existing more as a spectacle than as a person. Her lack of depth could reflect the way history reduces complex individuals to caricatures for consumption.Lola Montes represents a bridge between classical and modern filmmaking, taking risks with narrative form, visual experimentation, and thematic ambition. It has inspired directors, critics, and audiences alike, sparking debate about the relationship between art and commerce, biography and spectacle. Its postcard cinematography and colorful sets are just the surface; beneath it lies a meditation on fame, history, and the public gaze.In summary, while Lola Montes may not be a perfect film, it's precisely its imperfections and ambitions that make it worth revisiting and analyzing.

>>203719260Herzog is the one that is celebrated on the Joe Rogan Experience. Herzog is better than Malick. He is totally uncorrupted by western trends. Malick is making a far left film deconstructing the life of Jesus. Why? Because he is trying to push that Jesus wasn't God but just a man. Malick and PTA are constantly chasing clout and legacy. Herzog rightfully sees us for what we are, a clown world. Herzog acts in Star Wars and Tom Cruise movies for fun. This is not an inside joke. >>203720124Malick is like PTA a far left liberal. He made A Hidden Life as a knock against Donald Trump but it ended up backfiring when unvaccinated were showing true courage against the far left lunatic fringe. Malick never came out to apologize for that movie, he just memory holed and now he is onto another far left woke take on Jesus, by humanizing and attempting to show he was not the son of God but a man. Like PTA, Malick only establishment acceptance. Imagine their surprise when both their magnum opuses (There will be Blood and the Tree of Life) failed to make the Sight & Sound canon in favor of Get Out and Moonlight, two films everyone knows are garbage but pretend are masterpieces. How could Malick and PTA get betrayed like that? They ended up only doubling down, and are now going even more woke in their new films. PTA's new film has major anti-Trump themes and hard LGBT subplots (the idiot wrote and directed it before the culture's full pivot into anti-wokeism that we are experiencing now. Now he is trapped with a woke flop that is two years out of date). Malick did the same by doing a woke deconstruction about the life of Jesus. Malick is playing both sides. If he really believed that Christ is King and made a film to honor this, it would have 20-30 % on RottenTomatoes. But we all know he is attempting to give the Aronofsky-esque, kabbalistic take on Jesus that the establishment embraces and the Christians are too dumb to realize he is mocking them.
>>203722977Man he should have ended on this instead of going on and doing garbage movies with Martin Scorsese and Richard Gere. The Japanese are always bowing down to Americans, it is sickening.
>>203722086CGI was the death of film that anti-AI folk think AI is, I know it is a meme but it all went with 35mm+practical FX. Wanting to stop AI and go back to CG shitfests is backward. We should push forward and accelerate to where AI can fully emulate 35mm+practical FX instead. Instead of going backward, we must push forward, or else film will die forever.
>>203729844You are so confident that they are woke, but I bet you are wrong. PTA films were full of the n-word and hard sex. He is a trend setter. The woke came after him and he is going to want revenge. Just a feeling that I have.
>>203730103>PTA films were full of the n-word and hard sex.All films were in the 90s due to Tarantino's influence, even Woody Allen bizarrely made a movie everyone is cussing and fucking. Look PTA is not that good and that makes Sight & Sound's snub of There Will be Blood tragic because he will never surpass that.

Then there is this shoe-horned in gay subplot. Twitter was in a purity spiral trying to cancel him. The industry and media apparatus wasn't about to eat their own propaganda artist, so twitter was left seething. The only other racist thing I can think of is the fat black woman in Magnolia who is a complete caricature, but that was back when he was good and DNGAF
