I’m really surprised how this one gets celebrated by some people, because it’s one of the best examples of “fumbled execution of a great idea” I can think of. Therefore it’s *yet another* recipient of the Good Job! Not Worth Watching award.There are strong, strong beginnings! Some investment guy in Virginia loses his marbles one snowy Winter. He shoots up his workplace, blasts his estranged wife, and kidnaps his two very young daughters, then goes SLEWING down a snowy mountain road screaming at them to shut up, crashes . . . and winds up with the kids in a HAUNTED cabin in the middle of the white woods. Before he can blast one of his daughters in the back of the head and put a fine point on his self-absorbed misery, a big ol’ ghosty girl with hulk strength grabs him up and twists him into a broken mess, pulling the corpse to who-knows-where. The girls run around on all fours for five years eating cherries that the ghost provides during all seasons, somehow.The killer’s twin brother and his skinny GOTH GF get guardianship of the girls after they are found later, with the courtroom assistance of a child psychiatrist who actually just wants to study MAMA: the big retarded ghost (literally, she was a mong in life!) who has attached herself to the kids and is very jealous of their attention. She’s not even a true ghost, really, and I *hate it* -- because no reason for her all-encompassing power is given. She’s just a big ugly floating monster who can make dimensional portals full of moths between far-flung places. And THAT’S one of the big negatives for the movie: Mama herself. She’s *supposed* to be an actual ghost from a suicide in the 1870s, but she’s unbeatable. Unexorcisable! She has the bone-crunching strength of ten horny chimps and can appear in the DAYTIME.

>>2041914622/2Her CG and design are pretty poor -- and in the last forty minutes of the movie, when all *other* things fall apart, you spend A LOT of time looking at this supernatural asshole. She’s always CRAWLING UP the walls, or FLIPPING AROUND like a dead gymnast, or screaaaaming right at the freaking camera. It’s really stupid because Mama wipes her ass on the Number One rule of successful ghost films: YOU DON’T CONSTANTLY SHOVE THE SPECTRE AT THE AUDIENCE’S FACE. It loses all power that way!There are other, equally damnable things in this movie. At the end, everybody gets STUPID just so things keep happening to them. The child psychiatrist, not even taking with him the bones of Mama’s dead baby -- the very thing he BELIEVES will keep her from killing him -- goes to the cabin, her stronghold, at NIGHT to confront her. Back at their new house, the older girl starts antagonizing Mama for no reason (I suppose to hurt her feelings and make her go away?), knowing what she is like . . . with skinny Goth GF, whom the girl actually likes, right in the house! Then the movie just HAS to crank up this heinous, goopy flow of orchestral GARBAGE MUSIC for the last forty minutes: bombastic, attention-blasting trash that insists on SCREAMING at you how to feel about events, all the while putting you to sleep and telegraphing (to people with taste) that you actually shouldn’t care. It closes with a redux of The Woman in White’s clifftop ending. I dislike that movie and its generic orchestral soundtrack too.
