>Lee’s face and his general appearance was an important factor in my selecting him. It evoked a particular sensation that touched me deeply, while the professional actors that I auditioned did not touch me as much. Ordinary faces, and ordinary people, tend to leave a stronger impression on me. When I chose Lee to be my actor, there was a lot of criticism. People complained that he did not have the face of a star. He wasn’t big or muscular. Yet, what deeply touched me was precisely this sense of ordinary-ness in his appearance. He was natural. Lee’s appearance in my films actually changed the whole path of my development as a filmmaker away from standard, industrial-style films and in another direction.>It’s not about a face being pretty; it is about how you frame it. The reason that I always cast Lee is his face. His face inspires me to look at film in a different way. Thinking about it, over my twenty-year career in feature films, it was never about the story, it was about filming Lee.https://www.cineaste.com/fall2019/painterly-poetics-tsai-ming-liang-and-lee-kang-sheng

>>204354190>It was in a /trek/ thread. That would be Mike Stoklasa (RedletterMedia) doing that. I've suggested strongly repeatedly that the Mods insert a PERSONAL POST FILTER (they enact self-censorship, only hide user posts for themselves, and their psychological drama doesn't deny other opinions or post viewings) option to get drama queens like Mike to stop pretending he owns this forum (Reddit-tarded behavior). It knocks out Mod Drama, makes the forum less angry and angsty, and simplifies life for everyone rather easily. Plus the drama queen can unhide all the hidden posts later if they decide to be less of an isolationist. The current system has the exploit where JUST ONE whiny cunt can deny free speech and post viewing of another person's efforts so long as they have a PET MOD or LAZY MOD backing them up. Then 4Chan becomes REDDITCHAN. To identify Mike Stoklasa behaviors, PRIMARILY in Star Trek Threads... look for posts that exhibit these 4CHAN trope phrases:MedsSchizoCopeFaggotChudESLSamefagThe poster using these phrases plus has a bunch of censored posts "Anonymous plus crossed out post number". This is the proper response.Flag this guy with FLOODING tag.Believe it or not, 4CHAN isn't a subsidiary of RedletterMedia and Mike Stoklasa is not the owner of these forums. His personal tastes are not everyone's personal tastes. I dislike censoring anyone for having legitimate opinions, but the dipshit is causing unnecessary stress and making 4CHAN into his own personal REDDITCHAN. Other people have the right to enjoy viewing other people's posts.Reducing a Whiny Cunt's BAN FEVER is the only way to lower his behavioral issues, sadly. If a "Report Post" basically acted as a personal filter list (hiding other users posts SOLELY for that user), these forums would be less tedious. Plus it would lower moderation human review.

>>204355707That doesn’t make her acting any better. You could’ve stuck any good looking blonde actress in her place, and nothing would’ve changed. I’m not saying the films that she was in aren’t great, because they mostly are, but the reason they are, is anything but Grace Kelly.
>>204355771>I’m not saying the films that she was in aren’t great, because they mostly areRear Window is shit
>>204355636Certainly what you have is the same for Honeymoon Hotel, a 1.36GB mkv file. The DVDRip for Don't Make Waves is an 1.35GB .avi, but the quality must be about the same of the 985MB file. It's an avi from 2011, after all.Sadly, no different versions, much less HD for any of the two.

>>204354994Nigerian cinema is legitimately horrible compared to Senegal. Nollywood is a complete joke for the most part, even decades back, so at least it's good for laughs. There aren't many Nigerian art films, and what little there is tends to be fairly recent. Maybe check out Mami Wata and The Lost Okoroshi.
>>204355771I’m going to go as far to say that if Grace Kelly was replaced by Vera Miles in every role she had, the films would’ve been infinitely better. Vera Miles is a beautiful blonde woman who can act.
>>204355533>That's right, Jay!You'll note that since I've been repeatedly forced to give "tit for tat" per Mike Stoklasa's behavior and giving him "3 Day Cooldowns" (which I strongly hate to enact) his output in RedletterMedia has gone from one monthly video to 3 or for videos per month. I think it's a mix of "old woman crankiness", terminally onlineness, and a distinct lack of social life outside of a too small friend group. In short, he's lonely, sexually frustrated, feeling the need for illusionary power, feeling he's contributing nothing to history, has lost his sex appeal, and isn't getting the respect he deserves. If he were in charge of a Home Owners Association, he'd be handing out noncompliance fines and measuring lawn height with a ruler by the hour. Or in short, "My problems suck! I'll be happy when I turn MY PROBLEMS into EVERYONE ELSES PROBLEMS".Mike Stoklasa should invite Steven Kostanski and Matthew Ninaber to interview and have lunch with since they have achieved aspects of what Mike desires to have accomplished and did it all on a decent budget. Plus Matthew Ninaber is a pretty good looking fellow and like Jay, masculine eye candy is never a negative for RedletterMedia episodes.

>>204358391I suppose I agree with most of them, sound of course is an especially cheeky one that I agree with in theory but I want it in practice Whats wrong with auteur theory And when you say video cameras, do you mean specifically video cameras or digital in generalI would probably add CGI to the list
>>204358391Very interesting, i was expecting the list to be people and not events. >The Hays CodeI often wondered how things would have progressed in american film without this ever happening, especially how the wartime films would've been, and if noir would've even been a thing and how different it would be. >Steven Spielberg>George Lucas>The Weinsteins>Video cameras>Quentin TarantinoStrongly agree with all of these.>TelevisionI do like the longevity it did give to films and how it educated a lot of people on films of the past for a long time. >Auteur theoryCould replace this would the FNW. Or maybe add to it. But i'm split on this one.
>>204358391>>The Dissolution of the Hays CodeElaborate.
>>204356452What’s wrong with the trailer?
>>204358508>I agree with in theory but I want it in practiceWhich is why I added "not wholly negative". There's nothing wrong with movies having sound in theory, it's more that these are things which had a negative influence. The Weinsteins and the Hays Code are probably the only ones that you can say are truly irredeemable, depending on how you feel about Spielberg, Lucas, and Tarantino, at least. It's also why I left out the studio system and New Hollywood. I think both eras had their positives and negatives. And you see that my list is very America-centric, I haven't explored world cinema enough.>And when you say video cameras, do you mean specifically video cameras or digital in general>I would probably add CGI to the listI meant like camcorders, accessibility. But digital in general also applies. I always forget about CGI.>Whats wrong with auteur theory Unrepentant glazing. Used as shield against criticism, especially when you consider who gets to be considered an auteur and who doesn't. It's also just dumb celebrity worship bullshit.>>204358618>I often wondered how things would have progressed in american film without this ever happeningThe scene in Blonde Venus where Marlene Dietrich is swimming in the pond is incredible. I think it's possible America as a whole would be less weird about sexuality now if it weren't for the Hays Code. When you watch Pre-Code films I feel like you get a much fuller idea of how things actually were back then. I also think a lot of the New Hollywood directors unconsciously absorbed the conservative Catholic values of 40s and 50s Hays-affected films and it shows in their work. The noir question is interesting.
How responsible is Christopher Doyle for the greatness that is WKW? Vice versa? One can obviously see that together they are unmatched, but who had a stronger career without the other. My vote is for Christopher Doyle. WKW without Christopher Doyle is a mess, but Christopher Doyle without WKW is an outstanding filmography.
>>204358906>the greatness that is WKWlmao
>>204358906I know this came off as if I were disrespecting WKW and his abilities as filmmaker. I did not mean that. All I’m saying is isn’t Christopher Doyle’s camera that gives Wong’s world its resonance?
>>204358906>>the greatness that is WKWlmfao.
>>204358890>I also think a lot of the New Hollywood directors unconsciously absorbed the conservative Catholic values of 40s and 50s Hays-affected films and it shows in their work.I do agree with this but also a lot of the new hollywood guys were italian-americans so the catholic thing is a given.
>>204358890Also, very based for posting Claudette.
>>204358683Okay, so this is pretty much theorizing, it's just something that seems to make sense to me but I can't actually back it up. But I feel like the Hays Code falling sort of had the same effect of when prohibition fell and people were drinking as much as they possibly can. You know what I mean? They weren't allowed to show titties and violence and rape in films but then suddenly you can and there's this extreme rebuttal (Excuse me for using weird words, I'm tired). So you get films that are just tits, just violence, just rape. Like, it had already weakened significantly by this point and there were already exploitation films but the Hays Code officially fell in 1968, and then you have the 70s, the decade of exploitation films and the golden age of porn. If the Hays Code never existed in the first place, would there be a Russ Meyers? A Herschell Gordon Lewis? Roger Corman? Or did their careers exist entirely in relation to, within the context of, the code's existence? And I'm not exactly positing that we would've been better off without those careers, but there are a lot of exploitation films that are VERY bad. And those films were influential. Those films influenced Tarantino. And I feel like the dissolution of the Hays Code most likely helped create this divide where on one side we have Scorsese and Spielberg and on the other side we have like, Frank Henenlotter and, well, Russ Meyers. Jim Wynorksi, Fred Olen Ray, whoever. You have these mainstream directors who were unintentionally influenced by the films of the Hays Code and unintentionally they normalize that mindset/taste. They may do similar things as the exploitation directors, may have similar plots or whatever, but they do it "respectfully" and can be taken seriously by critics and audiences while exploitation films and filmmakers are dismissed as underground freak pervert shit. The Morlocks of the film industry.

>>204358906Doyle carried WKW the same way that Rerberg carried Tarkovsky
>>204358968>>204359023I’ll bite. What is wrong with this statement? The man clearly had his mark on film history even if it was minuscule in comparison with others. Anyone who denies this is denying reality.
>>204359204Please elaborate for someone who feels absolutely nothing when watching a Tarkovsky film.
>>204358683>>204359115I guess maybe what I'm trying to say is that I think the dissolution of the Hays Code helped create this hierarchy that's divided film and audiences (in America at least) ever since. Cheap and tawdry vs highbrow and even middlebrow. And I feel like the best stuff is in between, and that there are some exploitation films that could or should be taken seriously and that a lot of the formal safe guys are absolute shit. Of course sometimes exploitation lowly type shit rises through the ranks through time, but how high? Night of the Living Dead is a "classic" at this point but what respectable director is making a zombie film, or citing Romero as an actual influence? Tarantino will feel his shit films to the brim with references but the majority of his fans aren't going to then go back and watch any 70s films, especially exploitation, he's considered above the trash even though he's voraciously influenced by it. I don't know. Maybe I'm speaking nonsense. >>204359043>>204359062>a lot of the new hollywood guys were italian-americans so the catholic thing is a given.Good point didn't even think about it.>Also, very based for posting Claudette.I made a few webms from that scene but I don't have the rest on me right now.
>>204359115>and then you have the 70s, the decade of exploitation films and the golden age of porn.I think this has way more to do with the politics and morale of the country at the time, during/post-Vietnam, the end of hippies, Watergate etc. Much more a case of art reflecting life. Your thinking here is too self-contained in the movie business. Plus even though the code officialy fell in 1968, by the late 50s it was already very much weak and in many cases completely ignored. Think you're wrong on this one.
>>204359326>I think this has way more to do with the politics and morale of the country at the time>Your thinking here is too self-contained in the movie businessyeah that makes sense
>>204359326>>204359343I should also have mentioned that the success of Easy Rider in 1969 played a huge part in what kind of films started getting made by the big studios in the early 1970s, it was a gritty film about doped up bikers and it was a huge smash.
>>204359473that makes sense too
>>204359511>You have these mainstream directors who were unintentionally influenced by the films of the Hays Code and unintentionally they normalize that mindset/taste.>there are some exploitation films that could or should be taken seriously and that a lot of the formal safe guys are absolute shit. >>204358906Being filtered by WKW's non-Doyle work is common, he is a director who hates getting pegged, and if you operate entirely on memes it is easy to be confused. You see WKW has been filtering his Cannes fanbase for decades. 2046 barely has any Doyle and it is his best movie. Blueberry Nights and the Grandmaster are also WKW masterpieces but because they lack memes ("whoooa dude big macs") and cheap Christopher Doyle aesthetics, people are in a state of revolt. ("pretty imag... not as pretty as before. grug unhappy! wong kar wai bad!" They do not want him to grow past his quirk chungus origins and create mature kung fu masterpieces like the Grandmaster. Also his early films have no Doyle. WKW is the GOAT with or without Doyle. All the asian cinema people drop here is just massive cope that WKW is already the best chinese director and everyone else is fighting for second place. >Christopher Doyle without WKW is an outstanding filmography. Not really. Doyle just resorts to the same visual cliches film after film. It will have shots that make you go "whoooa dude the vibes" but it will likely be a terrible film.
>>204361956'As Tears Goes By' has no Doyle but the others do. Regardless, Doyle is just a meme, cinematographers having star power today is the most bizarre of situations, I attribute it to audiences being too dumb to understand cinema intellectually. Even animals can understand aesthetic beauty so cinematography is what people cling to. However, cinema is not a visual medium and never has been. This is a recent phenomenon of the last twenty years as IQs have dropped down the sewer and mass immigration has lowered the standards of culture.

>>204362600It is the total opposite, it is WKW connecting to his Chinese roots, just like he did with Wuxia in Ashes of Time, another film that filtered millions. The film festival crowd hated the Grandmaster because it is they consider kung funa base level artform. Wong's only oriental exoticism grift is Happy Together, a film that had an unbroken two minute gay sex scene. This is a shameless movie, and I sense that Wong Kar Wai regretted it, because not one of his movies ever had gay sex, kissing, or even gay romance.
>>204362711>He pisses on his own peopleNo he doesn't. Look at something like Jenjira Pongpas' character in Cemetery of Splendour. He does a great job of finding the universal in the particular with her amid all the gentle ribbing about her folksy Thai credulity.
>>204362734They consider kung fu a base artform* for people like Jackie Chan and so on, not a serious genre worthy of artistic respect. This is slowly changing as we are seeing genre films being championed today in the arthouse; even Godzilla movies are now playing in Cannes.
