Which is why I added "not wholly negative". There's nothing wrong with movies having sound in theory, it's more that these are things which had a negative influence. The Weinsteins and the Hays Code are probably the only ones that you can say are truly irredeemable, depending on how you feel about Spielberg, Lucas, and Tarantino, at least.

It's also why I left out the studio system and New Hollywood. I think both eras had their positives and negatives. And you see that my list is very America-centric, I haven't explored world cinema enough.

The scene in Blonde Venus where Marlene Dietrich is swimming in the pond is incredible. I think it's possible America as a whole would be less weird about sexuality now if it weren't for the Hays Code. When you watch Pre-Code films I feel like you get a much fuller idea of how things actually were back then. I also think a lot of the New Hollywood directors unconsciously absorbed the conservative Catholic values of 40s and 50s Hays-affected films and it shows in their work. Okay, so this is pretty much theorizing, it's just something that seems to make sense to me but I can't actually back it up. But I feel like the Hays Code falling sort of had the same effect of when prohibition fell and people were drinking as much as they possibly can. You know what I mean? They weren't allowed to show titties and violence and rape in films but then suddenly you can and there's this extreme rebuttal (Excuse me for using weird words, I'm tired). So you get films that are just tits, just violence, just rape. Like, it had already weakened significantly by this point and there were already exploitation films but the Hays Code officially fell in 1968, and then you have the 70s, the decade of exploitation films and the golden age of porn.

If the Hays Code never existed in the first place, would there be a Russ Meyers? A Herschell Gordon Lewis? Roger Corman? Or did their careers exist entirely in relation to, within the context of, the code's existence? And I'm not exactly positing that we would've been better off without those careers, but there are a lot of exploitation films that are VERY bad. And those films were influential. Those films influenced Tarantino. And I feel like the dissolution of the Hays Code most likely helped create this divide where on one side we have Scorsese and Spielberg and on the other side we have like, Frank Henenlotter and, well, Russ Meyers. Jim Wynorksi, Fred Olen Ray, whoever. You have these mainstream directors who were unintentionally influenced by the films of the Hays Code and unintentionally they normalize that mindset/taste. They may do similar things as the exploitation directors, may have similar plots or whatever, but they do it "respectfully" and can be taken seriously by critics and audiences while exploitation films and filmmakers are dismissed as underground freak pervert shit. I think this has way more to do with the politics and morale of the country at the time, during/post-Vietnam, the end of hippies, Watergate etc. Much more a case of art reflecting life. Your thinking here is too self-contained in the movie business. Plus even though the code officialy fell in 1968, by the late 50s it was already very much weak and in many cases completely ignored. Being filtered by WKW's non-Doyle work is common, he is a director who hates getting pegged, and if you operate entirely on memes it is easy to be confused.

You see WKW has been filtering his Cannes fanbase for decades. 2046 barely has any Doyle and it is his best movie.

It is the total opposite, it is WKW connecting to his Chinese roots, just like he did with Wuxia in Ashes of Time, another film that filtered millions. The film festival crowd hated the Grandmaster because it is they consider kung funa base level artform.
