Your comment (weak even as a trolling attempt) is what makes no sense since Fulci, even when hired to direct slop (a type of product meant to be easily grasped by average joes) made it abstract/surreal/unpredictable. Case in point: the direct to video Touch of Death.
Italian horror cinema has gone above the current standard for slop because they have effects, images and themes that are more layered than, say, Apartment 7A

gore and autistic lighting is not enough to save a movie with extremely long drawn out dialogue scenes just to further it's dull nonsensical plot no one gives a shit about anyway. That's your typical Fulci movie. A bunch of literal who characters who might as well be nameless talking in a monotone manner for a half hour before you see a little bit of gore and then you're stuck sitting through another 20 minutes of the same stupid shit. Italian horror fucking sucks and Fulci is a literal hack and among the worst directors in the genre.

The golden generation got older (directors/screenwriters/producers etc died or lost their fastball, actresses lost their prime looks etc) and there was only one other major director afterwards (Lamberto B.)
Studios started to be merged/closed down/bought
American movies saturated screens worldwide, leaving little room for genre movies from other countries

Cheap gore: Terrifier movies
Autistic lighting: It's What's Inside or the murky color graded visuals of dreck such as First Omen, Tarot, Scream VI etc
Fulci was a maverick, a genius whose vision wasn't dry or college-dictated but bold and educated enough. It takes a similar approach to fully enjoy his movies

That's the thing: you cannot cling to "good" as a type of very high, hard to reach standard because it harms your entertainment life, it harms your sex life, it makes you see things from a negative/testy standpoint.
Nowadays particularly, when we have the option to watch movies without paying, it's best to be perceptive even if you're critical of a movie, that is: flow with it (without trying to overlook its technical/narrative/moral flaws) and get a discussion going and making the act of watching and discussing it as enjoyable as possible even if it sucks.
One of the worst movies I've seen this year (Tarot) also has the best song (I Saw You) and one of the best scenes (the one at the theater where while the song plays) of any 2024 horror movie.

>>204392803

>>

Three weeks is way more than most of these indie movies without Halle Berry get. Azrael didn't even get a full week.
>>
>>204392933
It's just 4 lines but once again: you're a midwit so it's not about summarizing.
Your yearning for dumbed down comments shouldn't be encouraged because you bring the discussion levels of these generals down with your incapacity to counterargue. You shouldn't comment much if at all because you're uninsightful and tedious.
>>
>>204392933
To be fair, you must possess an almost esoteric comprehension of the avant-garde landscape of Italian horror cinema to genuinely appreciate the magnum opus that is Lucio Fulci’s filmography. This is not merely a cavalcade of blood and guts; it is a transcendent odyssey into the very depths of human depravity and existential dread, where each frame serves as a visceral manifestation of philosophical inquiry. If you cannot decode the intricate allegories woven into City of the Living Dead or the labyrinthine narrative structure of The New York Ripper, you might as well be consuming reality television as an art form. Fulci’s audacious embrace of surrealism and his subversion of genre conventions create an unparalleled cinematic tapestry that invites a profound interrogation of mortality, fear, and the uncanny. Therefore, unless you’ve spent countless hours dissecting the metaphysical implications of his craft through a lens of psychoanalytic theory and postmodern critique, you are hopelessly adrift in the shallow waters of cinematic mediocrity.

Azrael had a limited release and was already on its way to streaming. NLG was released with some box office expectations but it was released along The Substance and that cost both movies regardless of their quality because it split the horror audience in the critical OW.

I like stupid movies but this one is very weak, by virtue of the stupid premise and some surprisingly solid kinography, it is somewhat entertaining, it is just ok, it sits in the border between being shit and good. The lack of gore takes a lot out of it also.

Halle Berry
Lionsgate
More mainstream appeal than The Substance. It has a Shyamalan vibe to it that'd in theory make it an early Autumn movie theater option.
>>
>>204393201
I feel like Halle Berry hasn't been a big draw for years and Lionsgate isn't exactly known for their quality output. The trailers didn't really have any big hook either. I hope it's decent, just released at a bad time considering Arcadian, the new Quiet Place, and Azrael have all come out this year.
>>
This has the some of the worst acting I've ever seen in a horror movie. It doesn't help that it's obvious that the actresses have on each leg the age of their respective characters, or that the dialogues seem written by chatgpt. There are a few hot scenes, but that doesn't save it from being the worst movie I've seen this spooktober, and I hope it stays that will because this will be hard to top.
>>
>>204393311
>I feel like Halle Berry hasn't been a big draw for years and Lionsgate isn't exactly known for their quality output.
They're both objectively bigger players than the ones linked to The Substance despite Qualley's current great moment and Demi Moore's making a comeback, and it was released by MUBI which lacks Lionsgate's foothold on the market.
Wiki says Never Let Go was released in 2.667 theaters; The Substance in 1.949.
I have low expectations in terms of it being groundbreaking etc or even actually good; if it's okayish that's enough for a comfy Friday night watch.

Never Let Go dropped on VOD. Excited for this as everything looked good in the trailers and the reviews I watched except from the reviews it sounds like it's going to be one of those movies where it is "was there ever really any spooky monsters in the woods or was it in her head the whole time" and there's going to be no satisfactory resolution. Wrong. V/H/S/Beyond and It Follows strike the same chord. It's the same lubricious madness, bathing in blood, the Universe seeping in and not necessarily making sense. It takes on the form of the divine feminine, possibly with implications that the Universe itself is a woman in a Spinozian pantheist sense and that The Entity is her avatar, out of place in our Apollonian patriarchal world. In the case of It Follows, it was pure “scratch the Universe and who knows what the fuck will come out”.
For tasteless /hor/tards that prefer the original, V/H/S/Beyond just looks like a bunch of robot Indian women (gay) dancing to a soundtrack that isn't black metal, and that's as deeply as they engage with it. Shocking that these Cheeto-y chuds don't get it; as years go by, it will be re-evaluated as one of the best horror films in cinema history, while the themes I've mentioned will be explored further in books and scholarly journals.

I've seen some anons seething about it but as someone who doesn't care about pirating or having a "collection" anymore, I like it
>>
>Dead Rock (2024)
Jesus fucking Christ, this is one of the worst FF horror movies I've ever seen. I'm not even kidding, the first 30 minutes is just 4 women talking in a car. There's one horror scene in the first 45 minutes. Keep in mind that this movie has a runtime of 71 minutes. Even after one horror thing happens, they go back to bullshit women talking about drama. It's not until the last 5-10 minutes that the horror part actually starts. Fuck this movie, I want to kill everybody that was involved in making it.
>>
>>204397382

Chick just interviewing people the whole movie and then literally in the last 10 minutes the "horror" kicks in and I can't see shit from fuck because it's too dark and the camera shakes too much. I'm starting to notice a pattern here. Last good FF movie I saw was Deadstream. I keep falling for the "cute female lead in a movie equals tits at some point" meme when that's not even a thing anymore in current year.

Only the first VHS tried to maintain the Supernatural Snuff Film vibe where you could pretend all the movies operate in a shared universe that's basically our own. Then the second movie has a zombie epidemic. The new ones don't even bother making the tapes fit into the wraparound anymore.

This was interesting. A racist, pro-MAGA, anti-vax female lead that ends up winning throughout the entire movie, you keep waiting for her to get her comeuppance but it never comes. She not only survives she does it triumphantly. She learns nothing, she's the same exact person at the end.

She's definitely not painted in a positive light but it also doesn't feel overly judgemental either, the movie kind of celebrates her victories with her.

pumpkinhead 2 really doesnt stand to the original at all.
i think pumpkinhead is only on screen for 1 or 2 minutes in the first hour, but thats not even the main problem. it's like they just copy pasted a bunch of story beats from the first one to make it a pumpkinhead movie, but didnt really get what made the first one great.
in fairness, they do try to recreate the atmosphere of pumpkinhead scenes with the lighting and stuff flying around and pumpkinhead entering in slow mo and all that, but it all just seems shallow and brainless, and not in a good way.
