Back and Forth is unironically a shit film.

Queen of /film/
>>204516942>>204517150>>204517241>>204521030It is messing with my head and I wonder why it is so shocking. Then I realize, I don't imagine women as having consciousness. I think of them as NPCs who only care about fucking Chad and decorating cakes. The thought of women watching art movies just does not compute.

what's the discord
>>204521659Unironically, the majority of viewers at my local art cinema are mostly women. If they are men, they are likely over the age of 40.
>>204521659Cinephile women do exist, but only online. If you see one in real life they'll vanish the next moment, the universe will correct itself.
>>204521776I don't know Mandarin, no. Was thinking of using DeepL to translate the message
>>204521826This is simply not true. The person who instilled a love of cinema in me happened to be a woman. She is my favorite teacher I’ve ever had, and if I ever make anything of myself in cinema, I will be sure to honor her.
>>204521782There will be no discord, and that's the end of it.
>>204521659the only women cinephiles I know are trans

A bizarre desire of mine is to create something that has a lasting influence and leaves a legacy on the world, and unironically /film/ fulfills that need for me in some strange way. Have you guys fantasized about creating something, kind of like a collective, an idea, or a work of art that changes the world in some way? I like feeling like the things I do have an impact on life itself. I try to change everyone I meet just by being myself.
>>204523095He was shilling serpents egg every thread. /film/ holds it in very high regard now, but still everywhere outside of here it is considered bergmans worst film (though obviously the people who say that are just parroting popular opinion and haven’t actually watched it themselves)
>>204523013>And most of all the OG Meganonthat's me. I stopped posting megas because people became too needy, plus I just don't post as much
>>204523152Was surprised after watching it for FOTW then checking RYM to see it at like a 6/10 score equivalent. Why would people hate that film so much? The ending was different to what I expected, but I thought that the flick was amazing still.
So we still got like 4-5 regulars here from the good days ?
>>204523235>Why would people hate that film so much? lol I literally said why in the comment your replying to
One day yall will miss lil bro poster
>>204523285Your just an offshoot of the niggas
>>204523272"Parroting popular opinion" doesn't satisfy me at all. I want to go deeper.
>>204523314That’s because in the late 70s and 80s it became fashionable to dunk on Bergman (his nazi sympathies sort of related to that) but the European art films of the 60s got snubbed for the more social realism films of the Hollywood renaissance.
>>204523235Of course there are exceptions, but I've noticed that when a non-anglophile arthouse director makes a movie in English it usually isn't as well received as his other works
>>204523236Not that surprising. Times change, gimmicks change, and the thread mainly becomes a hangout for regulars who have nothing better to do.
>>204523152Wouldn’t say it’s his worst, but definitely lower tier Bergman. Nowhere near his top twenty even.

>>204524935Electra Glide in Blue.

>>204526245>How does this negate what I already said?I'm not whoever you replied to. Just pointing out House is not top 10 Obayashi.>It is most definitely top 10.>t. has seen less than 30 Obayshi films
>>204526511What would you put in the top 10? I guarantee we disagree. Some Obayashi I find boring.
>>204526211It matters more often than not.>Would Gummo benefit from a better plot? Gummo would benefit everyone by not existing. Non-movie, much less a film.
>>204526750>I guarantee we disagree. That's already clear. For my taste, House relies far too much on just being silly, much like Cute Devil and his Kosuke Kindaichi film.Anyway, just in release order:>Lonely Heart>His Motorbike, Her Island>April Fish >Bound for the Fields, the Mountains, and the Seacoast>The Discarnates>The Rocking Horsemen>Goodbye for Tomorrow>Sada>Casting Blossoms to the Sky>Seven Weeks
>>204526276Bold take.
>>204527021Not him, and disagree with you about House, but that's basically all solid Obayashi kino (haven't seen April Fish or Goodbye for Tomorrow). Casting Blossoms to the Sky is probs his peak.
I've never seen a single asian film that wasn't completely worthless garbage that would struggle to even find distribution if they were made in Europe. Kairo and Audition were two of the worst films I'd ever seen in my life
>>204527021I think that House is really the perfect film that represents the saying that it’s not the plot that matters, it’s everything else. I remember when I originally watched it, I had no idea that Obayashi had lost so many people he loved to the atomic bomb, but I remember feeling there was something poignant/melancholy about it. After learning more about Obayashi, I rewatching it multiple times (twice in the theater). I can’t help, but feel this is one of the saddest movies of all time. In a way, it seems like a way for him to come to terms with the deaths of his loved ones, and not be bitter. Besides for the grandmother’s lover there is not much hint about this. Obayashi’s House is one of the best displays of raw emotion. Ya we definitely disagree. The first one I would dismiss and replace with House is His Motorbike, Her Island.

You had to learn about Obayashi and watch the movie multiple times to get that? It's incredibly explicit. They even directly state what the movie is about in the final scene. Why the fuck do you think "Fantasy" is the last one alive? The Aunt can't get over the death of her husband, Gorgeous can't get over the death of her mom, the girls can't get over their crush on their teacher even though it's not reciprocated and never will be. They all refuse to let go of their love and live in delusion. What sets the entire film in motion is Gorgeous not accepting her father marriage the same way the Aunt couldn't accept her betrothed's death. It's why Gorgeous becomes possessed by the spirit of the house, she is emotionally in the same state as her aunt. Not to mention she looks like her mom who her aunt was jealous of. Were you watching the movie with your eyes closed the first time you saw it? Were you "baked"?

>>204529676I'm choosing to believe this.
>>204529040>What I focus on the most is mise en scene.Based.
>>204529676False. Sarah Gadon doesn't do that.
>>204529475You’re okay. I am seriously trying, but ever since I was young I noticed that I would miss out on key plot points or my friends would find a plot hole that I overlooked. I was always super into the movie, but I would be too busy trying to figure out what an actresses facial expression means, for example, to pay attention to everything else. I truly get lost in movies sometimes and feel emotions from something that may or may not have anything to do with the plot.
>>204529689It’s true, I just read a magazine scan of the interview on archive.org.
I am watching Annette right now. I am about 30 minutes in. I hope Leos is okay. He really seems to be sort of sick of life how he is deconstructing everything. He has been doing this in every film of his in obvious increasing amounts. I hope he is okay.

Can someone explain why this is so highly regarded? I watched it with my mom last night and both of us were laughing and cracking jokes the entire time. We just didn't understand how two people in their late 30s would fall so deeply in love with each other after two encounters, and be so heartbroken two encounters later that the woman would nearly commit suicide. >>204534735>watches old outdated black and white shit made before 2010>waah why is it so badRetard, at least you have taste though unlike people here who watch all those ''''''''classics'''''''''. Thank god /film/ is healing from that cancer

>>204534782look at this liddl poophead
>>204534749When you watch a film you are immersed in the feel of it, not the think of it. In order to feel, we need acting, melodrama, and dialogue. Cinematography is third or fourth in its importance.
>>204534801>>204534841>>204534869People back in the days watched shitty films because they didn't know any better. Not only that, they also made shitty films>https://www.imdb.com/list/ls056244405/As you can tell by that hack Bresson's taste

>>204534935>watched shitty films because they didn't know any better. Not only that, they also made shitty filmsthey do this still today, what's your point?
>>204534935The key is that Bresson was popular entertainment. Today artists thrive on the indulgence of 'understanding'. Cinema has become /fa/ when it should be /lit/. All this is a phenomenon of late stage capitalism.
>>204535015>still
>>204534912>In order to feel, we need acting, melodrama, and dialogueNot true at all. Why don't you just watch theater instead?
>>204535029>Cinema has become /fa/ when it should be /lit/.What do you mean by this? I think there have been times when they are interchangeable. Not the boards, but what they represent themselves. Fashion and literature.
>>204535029Cinema actually has become /trash/.
>>204535031good and bad exist in all eras i'm waiting on some kind of substantial argument as to why old movies are all bad

>Bullying someone for wanting to discuss filmsThis general is over.
>>204535562That is very true. Tyrants will be the death of /film/!
>>204535079Cinema is theater. No one is sitting there watching a bunch of laser light shows, as much as they pretend they do, I bet they sre watching Porky's at the end of the day. For instance, not one person has talked about Joker 2's cinematography. Everyone is talking about the plot. Not its incredible lighting, long camera shots and David Fincher esque grit. According to vibesfags Joker 2 should be great. >>204535094Today all a film needs is heavy vibes and it gets 3.6 on letterboxd, but they are written by apes. The Substance is a terrible movie because it has no:>likeable characters>articulate dialogue>good story>resolutionMegalopolis is particularly bad. The entire conversation about this movie revolves around the budget. No one actually had anything to say about the movie itself other than: it cost a lot of money. It is a total cinematic failure on every level. Joker 2 on the other hand is a cinematic triumph. Like Fando Y Lis it is causing mass riots among all the right people; when the mutant children of capitalism are angry about their bread and circuses, you have done something right.
We're all over here.

>>204535600What do you mean by heavy vibes? Vibes to me transmit emotion and real thoughts. I am a “vibefag”, and I didn’t care for Joker 2. I prefer a more dogme 95 type of film that is outside of cinema. I am glad that you liked Joker 2 though, and are able to take a lot from it.

>>204536194Nigga, she's a 37 year old who nearly left two kids motherless and a man widowed because she wanted to fuck a man she met three times. It would be endearing if she were 13 years old.
>>204535820>Vibes to me transmit emotion and real thoughts.I am not outright dismissing vibes but they are fourth or fifth in importance, even after sound design. Zoomers have made them number one. Vibes offer only a primitive aesthetic experience. The vibes bullrun is ending and soon directors like Caroline Fogart and Coppola are no longer going to be able to scam their way into Cannes with vibe fests. Film is soon going to resemble literature and music with its fluidity between thought and execution. Even AI can emulate vibes. Vibes is the bare minimum even a ten year old can execute, see the liminal spaces. Vibes are terrible.
>>204536396>The vibes bullrun is ending and soon directors like Caroline Fogart and Coppola are no longer going to be able to scam their way into Cannes with vibe fests.anon, The Substance won an award in Cannes

>>204536332She was rather naive, yes. What if the romance was her first real romance, her first real love, her first real emotional experience, that she was in fact 16 years old in this sense - despite being 37, married, two kids? What if she enthusiastically jumped at the first opportunity to feel life because she was denied that feeling by the busy flow of modern life, bourgeois life, British life?
