>Slasher
Wrong.
A slasher is all about the *anticipation* of the kill. Not the kill itself. Ghostface stabs people for like two seconds and then we're onto the next scene. It's all about the buildup.
Art is all about the kill themselves. There is more screentime given to violence than buildup. Not a slasher.
Try again!

>Ghostwatch
This ruled. Really, really good. This might be the first horror film I show my kid when they're old enough since it's not gory or too explicit but is still effective.

It was objectively true. Every slasher other than Terrifier is about the buildup. The actual execution of the kills is trivial and never lasts longer than the buildup. If you really want to act like this isn't true so that you can deny being wrong that's up to you, but it's retarded if not intellectually dishonest.
There is no slasher that focuses more on gore than buildup. Terrifier is not a slasher.

>>204633452
Terrifier has the trappings of a horror film/slasher. Nobody denies that. Him being a demon clown instead of just a guy on film is what gives them the excuse to call it horror instead of a simulated snuff film. My contention is that it is only that: an excuse. Make Art a regular man and the films don't substantially change, because they aren't actually about Art being a demon clown. They are mainly about the extended scenes of gore.
I get that it has token scenes of plot like Art dying but coming back because he's supernatural, but they're superfluous.

2. Why does a simulated snuff film not fall under "horror"?
You're trying to deconstruct things to the point where no movie could be considered a horror movie. Frankenstein is just a sci-fi movie that uses the monster as an excuse to call itself horror, right? Etc

Haven't seen it but it would depend on how much focus is given to the gore. The defining characteristic of torture porn is that it focuses in graphic detail on scenes of gore for extended periods, functioning the same literal erotic pornography, but for gore. Movies that just have occassional scenes of intense gore to advance the plot are not torture porn.

It seems to me torture porn is a signifier for films that indulge in cruelty and mean spiritedness. A splatter movie isn't necessarily mean spirited. Braindead, for example, is called a splatter film, and it's far from mean spirited. It's a very silly, fun movie. So I guess tone is the differentiating factor.
>>
>>204633666
>1. What makes that excuse invalid?
Any other slasher would still work as a slasher regardless of the killer's spooky aesthetic. It's still about being hunted by a deranged killer, which is horror, and a slasher.
Terrifier NEEDS Art to be specifically a demon clown in order to pretend to be horror, because it's the only excuse they have to claim the genre. Otherwise it would just be a simulated snuff film, because Terrifier does not function like other slashers. It is far more about gore than "the chase".
>2. Why does a simulated snuff film not fall under "horror"?
Rethink this question lol
>>
>>204633767
It's based. Pretty mindfuckey.
>>
>>204633754
If a horror comedy slasher about a clown is "torture porn" then the term has become meaningless.
>>
>>204633837
>Terrifier NEEDS Art to be specifically a demon clown
Except he isn't a demon clown in Terrifier 1.
>It is far more about gore than "the chase".
There are more scenes in these movies of
>the main girl talking to her friends and family
>art making jokes and pulling pranks
>people being chased
than there are of Art killing people. No slasher is nonstop gore, this isn't Guinea Pig.

It isn't "randomly compared to porn," it objectively fits one of the definitions of pornography. It's only for specificity that "torture" was added, to differentiate it from erotic porn. But the fact that it is a genre of porn is not debatable.

I do this because I like to appreciate the execution of the film more than try to figure out what's going on. I also don't like being blindsided by little twists that change the whole complexion of the movie and make you feel like you have to rewatch it to fully appreciate it. For instance I went into the new Suspiria knowing Suzy is Mother Suspirorium, which made seeing her realize it herself and her reactions with the oblivious witches more enjoyable.
>>
When you ask a Terrifier enthusiast what their favourite part of the movie/franchise is, it's never writing or direction or cinematography or anything that actually relates to filmmaking. It's always just "I liked this gruesome murder in particular, because it was very gruesome and bloody". What they're getting from the film is not anything related to the fact that it's a film, so they can't be described using the same term used to describe people who like horror films as films.

>>
>>204633459
Torture porn emphasizes pain and suffering. SAW 1 has barely any gore in it but has a scene where a guy saws off his own foot. Gore was added later.

Splatter means lots of gore and blood, and they don't necessarily need to be horror. Riki Oh is a splatter martial arts film for example. Toxic Avenger and Bad Taste are other examples

Splatter tends to be more fun and over the top, while torture porn is usually edgier and more pretentious (see Martyrs, or SAW whenever it was pretending to have a point). Terrifier is both and doesn't take itself very seriously.
