Watched two popular staples for the first time today - Halloween, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the originals. Thought both of em were lousy for different reasons. Halloween's music was more grating than immersive, and there's so many slow panning shots of the neighborhood as if Carpenter was desperate to keep the movie close to 90 minutes. Or maybe just so he could let the corny music that he composed have time to play out. The dialogue is bog standard and the actors were terrible with the exception of Jamie Lee Curtis who was a notch or two better. The guy who played Dr. Loomis was probably the worst. But there's no twists or turns or anything to make the plot interesting that's the bigger issue, all of it's just building up to "Michael's come back to town". There's no real set-ups or payoffs, either. It amazes me that audiences apparently enjoyed Halloween but then hated The Thing, which was easily a better movie.As for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the cast feels a little more natural, but the material's extremely thin. The first half hour is them fucking around, the next half hour is one after the other looking for each other and going toward the house, and then the last half hour is Marilyn Burns screaming and screaming and screaming. It was the film equivalent of "Wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world?" Again, no substance behind it - teens fuck around and then get killed. Even the gas station owner being one of the family wasn't a surprise. I mean come on, as soon as you see "Barbecue" on the gas station sign, you knew that motherfucker was on it.A grating double-feature experience all around. Any Halloween-themed movies worth a damn? Or at least a laugh?
