Each film tries to generate a narrative about some kind of social outcast archetype and capitalizes on it with some kind of "social outlook" to make the film look deep and "conscious". Presos is about prisoners, Caribe is about environmental exploitation and Gestación is about teen pregnancy. It never worked for me because I always recognized funding and promotion made by the elites, and only the most socially unaware of people buy that shit in CR. You literally can't relate to the films because they are so fake and exaggerated in their portray of poverty. I guess in the rest of Latin American countries it might be something similar; I've seen salvadorean films about the death squads, chilean stuff about Pinochet's regime, and brazilian favelacore. Social cinema is cool in theory, but latinoamerican kino seems to be totally consumed in the genre, it's just a neorealist grift imo.
