Ikiru absolutely sucks. It is an avalanche of sentiment anchored by a horrendous and annoying performance by Takashi Shimura. Man, if I had to look at Shimura and his wide-eyed sad face for one more minute, I was gonna turn this thing off. It seemed to me like he had more than just stomach cancer. He could barely control his speaking or his facial contortions. Shimura is so hellbent on begging for audience sympathy, it's as though there's no faith in Kurosawa or the script. The ending scenes of politicians talking about Watanabe's life are endless and excruciating to endure. We get it: he was a good man who helped build a park. So I have seen C'est pas moi, The Room Next Door and Afternoons of Solited so far at a film festival.C'est pas moi was great but it will only be of interest to Carax fans imo. The film is pretty fast jumping from one topic to another connecting them through cinema. It also deals with the move from 20th to 21st century. It's a lot of fun and it manages to have some sense of melancholy as usual with Carax. There is some new material of which the Merde appearance, piano scene and the last running scene are the highlights. I loved it but if somebody has never seen a Carax film they might not like this at all. As far as Godard goes this has some of the same aesthetic choices, you could already see that in the trailer, but the end result is something completely different. The Room Next Door by Almodovar was ghastly and verging on parody for the majority of the runtime. Dying in style with Tilda basically. Some of the dialogues are ear scraping. The climate change one for example. The exposition at the beginning is utterly ridiculous.Afternoons of Solitude was another Serra hit. Potential masterpiece. The footage is truly stunning.Caught by the Tides by Jia is decent but the 2/3 of the film is just footage from his previous films. Not his best but watchable. The last COVID third is the best part of the film. Rumours by Guy Maddin. Absolute garbage. Felt like Ostlund film but somehow worse. Extremely unfunny, smug and repetitive. I'm seeing Brutalist tomorrow.
>>204837037>>204837082the poster seems to have just included really popular films. he goes pretty deep into some obscure movements/directors, but he does also cover a bunch of the popular films

>>204850988He didn't push any new boundaries.
>>204850988His mysticism and symbolism doesn't impress me, i don't jive with that cosmic debris. His best film is Santa Sangre, probably because Claudio Argento kept him in check and didn't allow him to indulge too much in his spiritual masturbation, it's a solid giallo.
Kino
>>204851462Kinoer.
Yeah I think I got me self filtered. I already "scheduled" a rewatch for next friday, might as well get it.By filtered is that I don't consider it a masterpiece as many anons on /film/ do (if it's more than one schizo spammer btw)
>>204851523My thoughts on it anyways, it made me uncomfortable which the film tried and achieved it. The entire 'abba cast got me to nerves, the overall dirtiness got me mad actually. That's all I can say, Australia looks like hell on earth.I need a rewatch.
>>204851293>mysticism and symbolismHow can you act as though this is an aesthetic choice, like don't you realize that he is tapping into the entire language of reality. No filmmaker is able to formulate such abstraction into such a vivid cinematic terms. He is like a messenger directly from the heavens. >>204851276He is all the auteurs in the history of cinema rolled into one. He is everything and nothing. Jodorowsky is cinema itself. The best part is that he never had a hipster revival. They were creeped out by him then, they were creeped out by him in the 90s, and they are creeped out by him today.
>>204851750>He is everything and nothing. Jodorowsky is cinema itself. photo of an obnoxious man with his jaw agape mocking your statement
>>204851750>He is all the auteurs in the history of cinema rolled into one. He is everything and nothing. Jodorowsky is cinema itself.Meaningless babble.>The best part is that he never had a hipster revival.lmaoHis comeback into feature filmmaking in the 2010s was a direct result of his hipster revival that happened when El Topo and The Holy Mounatin got released on DVD and Blu-Ray a handful of years prior, you zoomer.
Can Lynch read anuses? no, he can't Jodorowsky sissies, we won
Remember when Jodorowsky posted his shriveled 90-year-old penis on YouTube?
>>204851750>He is like a messenger directly from the heavens.Ok, you're just trolling.
this was a good thread minus jodorowsky
>>204852159Yeah, it wasn't so bad.
Does Jodorowsky have any kids who make their own criminally underrated kino?
they say art is supposed to be challenging but is it a real challenge with appropriate payoff or an artificial one like school homework? like if a movie is slow with cryptic dialogue was it necessary to convey something or does the director feel like they have to stand out from the mainstream and because its expected of art films?
>>204852535Depends on the film.
>>204852535>was it necessary to convey somethingPossibly.
just finished watching this. I liked it, but it's definitely my least favorite Ruiz so far, which isn't really a surprise as it was released nearly 10 years after his death. it's pretty obvious that the gimmick is only there because Valeria Sarmiento didn't have enough footage Ruiz shot to actually make a feature length film, but it still kept me pretty intrigued. I'm not sure I've ever seen a film use that gimmick before. still one of the more interesting films of the 2020s, even if it is a lesser Ruiz
>>204852535Of course it is artificial. Most only take to film on aesthetic alone. Genuinely challenging film, like the works of Alejandro Jodorowsky, is reviled as we see on /film/. >People prefer comfortable lies over uncomfortable truths.
We're all not so bad here.
>>204852693What's the gimmick?
>>204852825halfway through the film, it starts playing the whole film backwards with added voiceover

>>204852918Sounds extremely bad.

bakin rn
>>204852997on paper it does sound bad, and I could see people not liking it, but it kept me entertained. plus the whole thing is only an hour long, so it doesn't drag on for too long
