Is Cuckoo supposed to be a horror movie? The most horrific thing about it were all the female characters.
How did they know that the killer would be at some gay concert

1/2Rating system: Excellent!Worth a watch! Good Job! Not Worth Watching! (well-made but pointless and dull)Hot Garbage!Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man (1943) – A venerable and very short Worth or Watch -- if you’re not bothered that Universal didn’t give a rat’s ass for continuity! Lon Chaney Jr. is back as Lawrence Talbot. Remember how they killed him in the first one? Well, in this one some grave robbers hear he has some gold buried with him, so they break into his tomb and LET THE LIGHT OF THE FULL MOON contact his perfectly preserved corpse! I guess he’s just in Wolf Man stasis? The whole main plot point in this movie is that WEREWOLVES CAN’T DIE! But Maleva the Gypsy’s son Bela, who infected Lawrence in the first movie, was beaten with a silver-headed cane . . . and he DID die! They even mention his death in this movie! But I guess Lawrence is a SPECIAL snub-nosed wolfy boy -- because he apparently needs Dr. Frankenstein’s supers-science to kill *him*.So after being woken from stasis, miserable Lawrence stalks the land, kills randos . . . and is finally institutionalized. He breaks out and teams up with ol’ Maleva the Gypsy from the first film. She takes him on as her adoptive lycanthrope son and pledges to guard him -- to never let him kill again -- while they travel to Central Europe in search of a CURE for Lawrence’s deathlessness. The odd thing, is Maleva is a piss-poor guardian. Lawrence transforms . . . transforms . . . kills, and kills AGAIN as they travel, and the silly old cow never so much as THINKS about the moon cycles. She never tries to put some kind of anti-werewolf amulet on him, like she did in the first one; she never even tries to throw a SHEET over him! She just looks up while they’re riding along and: “Oh! The full moon rises!” And there he goes killin’ again.
>>204948813The receipt for the tickets was found in his safe house.
>>204948830Lifeforce? Species?
>>2049488652/2So Maleva knows all about Dr. Frankenstein somehow, and that he is (was) the master of LIFE and DEATH. She takes Lawrence to the burnt-out castle of the late Doc, and he discovers the monster frozen in ice there. No, there’s no immediate cage match! At first, they’re actually on friendly terms. The monster is played by Bela Lugosi this time, and he does a good enough job, even if he looks a little too *small* for the get-up.Now the good -- though the stupid above is pretty fun in its own right! The film, as you might expect, has many of the striking monochromatic scenes Universal is known for: the castles, the forests, the graveyards, and the boisterous, vaguely European towns; the model of the castle at the end is probably one of the best in the studio’s whole catalog. Always zooming and panning, the camerawork is also more dynamic than the first film’s, and the Wolf Man himself is so much more ACTIVE: ever jumping up on barrels and crates, suddenly grabbin’ dudes by the neck, sprinting on all fours, generally skiving about! I initially thought, “Holy crap, Lon’s so athletic in this! He must have been in better shape than he looks! I bet he laid off the sauce just so he could put on a better show this time.” But nah, he didn’t lay off at all. Because that’s actually stuntman Eddie Parker, and he sure earned his pay.If you’re in the mood for a fun, good-looking, and unabashedly STUPID black & white classic, don’t pass this one up!

>>204948752(My Communion review from 2023)Communion (1989) – Worth a watch for weirdness’ sake. Christopher Walken portrays, with extreme passion, CHRISTOPHER WALKEN (incidentally playing novelist Whitley Strieber), dancing about, gesturing vaguely, rambling like a low-key lunatic even before the aliens appear, or his lifelong history of alien rectal probing is uncovered through hypnosis; as a matter of fact, his wife and a few other characters act and speak in the same nutty, sleepwalking way -- just as if they had caught their acting style directly from Walken. The movie doesn’t really go anywhere, the special effects aren’t that hot, and for some bizarre reason there are abstract paintings of questionable quality in almost every single locale. What was THAT all about? One anonymous poster said, “It’s not a very good movie, but it does a good job of capturing the deep weirdness of alien encounters,” wherein the creatures involved seem every bit as much spiritual presences as they do biological entities. I would have to agree. If you want something odd you haven’t seen before, you’re not allergic to Walkenism, and don’t mind that it’s not really a *complete package*, you could do worse than put this on.

David Howard Thornton's character dances around and does mime-like stuff like Art but it mostly falls flat and it looks dumb here instead of funny and amusing like when Art does it.The Tic tac toe kill was pretty good, the best part of the movie really, and Bill Mosley shows up at the end for a sequel hook that was OK

Blog post: Yesterday I finished the Frankenstein novel. I'm not a huge reader any more, so this is the first book I've finished in a few years. Anyway it's a very good read, it's a classic for a reason. I then started my watch through of the Hammer Frankenstein movies and made it through Curse of Frankenstein and Frankenstein's Revenge. They're a lot different than the Universal series but the sets and the Technicolor and the damn Kensington Gore all look beautiful. I plan on watching the Robert De Niro Frankenstein movie and the Randy Quaid miniseries soon because apparently they're the most accurate to the novel (but I don't really care about accuracy to the novel. I think it's cool that the pop culture perception of Frankenstein is so different than the original novel). My Frankenstein watchlist:>Blackenstein>The Bride>Dracula Prisoner of Frankenstein>Dracula vs Frankenstein>Edward Scissorhands>The Evil of Frankenstein>Frankenstein (1992)>Frankenstein 1970>Frankenstein '80>Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell>Frankenstein Created Woman>Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster>Frankenstein Must be Destroyed>Frankenstein's Army>Frankenstein Unbound>Horror of Frankenstein>I, Frankenstein>I Was a Teenage Frankenstein>Mary Shelly's Frankenstein>May>Poor Things>Victor Frankenstein>War of the GargantuasIn conclusion, Frankenstein.>TLDR; Frankenstein

>>204953713Dracula is the same I think he's wildly different in the novel compared to the book more of a force of nature I guess but every adaptation of Frankenstein is pretty inaccurate they don't even get the colour of the monster right. Jung Ito comes very close however.
>>204953843Frankenhooker is excellent, I've seen it before though. If there are any glaring omissions it's probably something I've already seen
>>204953718That's impossible.>>204953774Based. Watch the second one, has a great hell sequence.
>>204953673Earlier in the year I got the Arrow box set and watched all except Embodiment of Evil, which I saved for this month (and have since watched). The first 3 make a pretty good trilogy. The rest are just interesting but go way off the rails with the Finis Hominis stuff, barely related to the original Coffin Joe.Embodiment of Evil was surprisingly great, going back to the oldschool Coffin Joe. Visually interesting and creative as ever, and some nasty gore.
>>204953713>Yesterday I finished the Frankenstein novelGood taste.I genuinely believe Mary Shelley never penned down anything of her own. It's too good to be her own work.It was all Percy's notes and ideas. Perhaps he was even dictating everything to her.
>>204948857I'm gonna fuck you up.
uh... is 1 million a lot?
>>204953889I think it's cool that the pop culture idea of Frankenstein isn't exactly like the Mary Shelly version. Since the Universal films with Karloff's monster is what people think of, and that's not even accurate, then I think Frankenstein can really be anything as long as it's based on the premise of a guy creating a living man/monster

>>204956433Halloween is horrible. I hate the way its edited and shot. First you start off with this off the wall hillbilly family which has no relevance other than the fact that the way Zombie directs the movie has no purpose or thought either. Carpenter is a master filmmaker who composes his shots with such detail and attention. Zombie is a retard with a camera. In general i dont really like the 2000's remakes because they are all covered in vaseline and cant keep the camera still. Even ones which people praise like Hills Have Eyes (which is good) dont create the atmosphere that makes the original more compelling. Evil Dead is another example where its not bad but compared to how inventive the original film is with a microbudget its just a slick movie with no new ideas.

Can anyone give their honest first impressions of *classic films*? For instance, i saw the original Evil Dead first as a kid and it made such a great impression on me (probably made me more interested in film) but when i saw the sequel i didnt understand it. The tone was weird and the comedy was goofy. I wanted the first film again and didnt really understand what Raimi was doing with the sequel. Its with subsequent watches that i came to see it as its own thing and enjoyed it.

I really loved Communion, just saw it for the first time after hearing mixed things for so long. I like how it plays it straight. The alien effects were a little distracting at first but they ended up playing really well as the themes fleshed out more, especially when he took the mask off to reveal the weird mouth thing only to conclude it was only another mask. Maybe my favorite alien abduction movie.

>>204951145Haven't seen Terrifier 3 yet but Stream is my favorite 2024 horror movie because it is fully, unabashedly horror in several aspects:-the cast, which is the best in a few years with the return of several endearing faces-the plot, which mixes classic and more recent tropes in a way that sustains the pace and becomes weblike at the end-the nudity, which is welcome as well as the fact that one of the killers is a hot woman with a nice cleavage-the gore effects, done by the Terrifier director himself-the detachment from woke nonsense by having characters such as a strong father and black villains

>>204957464Blog post: I grew up in a sheltered household and dad was a Baptist pastor, so horror movies weren't really a thing for me when I was young. I never dressed up or went trick or treating, I missed out on all of that. I remember being fascinated by the horror VHS tapes at Blockbuster but my parents wouldn't rent them for me. I started watching horror movies in high school based on some recommendations online. Does anyone remember that faggot Maddox? He had an old article on his website about why Evil Dead 2 (or Army of Darkness maybe, I don't remember which one exactly) was the best movie ever so I decided to rent Evil Dead 1 & 2, The Exorcist, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. These were the first horror movies I really remember watching, I would have been about 14 or 15.The Exorcist: Spooked me, I thought the movie was kind of slow but I enjoyed itThe Evil Dead: Also spooked me, I thought the deadites were pretty scaryEvil Dead 2: Didn't spook me because I knew it was a comedy from Maddox's article, I just wanted to see vroom vroom chainsaw handTexas Chainsaw Massacre: Made the strongest impression and I still think this is the best horror movie ever. Made me feel grimy and gross, I wish I could get this feeling from a movie again.Anyway I watch horror year round now and it's my #1 genre, not letting me watch it as a kid made it much more appealing than it probably would have been to me otherwise

>>204957464A similar feeling that some ppl had when they watched the TCM sequel. As you watch movies and learn about life, you don't stand on the same place, and one of the things to keep in mind is that movie experiences are often unique because you were different and the people who made the movie were different. Take it one movie at a time for what it is and keep expectations under control because the fast-food attitude (expecting movies to deliver the exact same experience) is often upended when directors try something new. There are ofc franchises whose tone is steady but consider the fact that they shouldn't make you close-minded or one of those stale, repetitive contrarians even if you do prefer these movies which is a 100% legitimate choice.

>>204957464I watched the whole Trilogy for the first time a couple of days ago and the tone shift caught me off guard at first but I really came to love them all. I'm happy they are all so different, their change in tone responds mainly to how in control Ash is and from that perspective his evolution as a character who gets used to the unending horror is extremely enjoyable.

>>204958115The horror genre genre is feminist 99% of the time. You think the Golden Age of Chuddywood was at the forefront of it? Even the creator of horror and sci-fi horror was a feminist after all.
>>204957660Yes, FitS obviously had a very intense abduction scene which I liked, but overall it feels one dimensional compared to Communion which explores the phenomenon very effectively imo, from the surreal aura of abductions and aliens to the questions regarding the psychological nature as a possible explanation. It's a topic that's so memed and parodied and has such entrenched iconography and tropes, and Communion played it very straight and sober, and brought a refreshing immediacy and veracity to the subject. And imo Walken really brought it all together, very very natural performance as long as you're not insisting on remembering it's Walken the whole time if that makes sense.
>>204956912One Cut of the Dead is maybe good tier. Martyrs is just shitty slime for fucked up people (dont mean that in a good way).

Even Critters 5 had an unnecessary, tacked on feminist theme, where it turns out that the only bad, dangerous crites are the male ones, and they find a female crite who's nice and friendly, but also she's badass and can fuck up the male crites

This has recently happened to me with Maxxxine because it didn't deliver what the genre/cast would suggest and also because it was burdened by anti-men wokeness. But I was pleasantly surprised by movies such as Never Let Go: it wasn't a masterpiece by any means but I'm glad I gave it a chance
>>204958470Horror was born out of a romantic tradition. The foundational texts were high strung pieces with great loves and tragic deaths. Writers like Anne Radcliffe were the airport fiction of their day. Cheap thrills which played on womens fears to their delight. Poe of course was the ultimate romantic horror writer. Lovecraft consciously chose to omit the romantic elements of horror fiction more than any writer (though not being the first) so is responsible for the more abstract stuff we see today.
1/2Rating system: Excellent!Worth a watch! Good Job! Not Worth Watching! (well-made but pointless and dull)Hot Garbage!Idle Hands (1999) – A very funny Worth a Watch from a time when staring at the MTV for hours and smoking pot were considered quite REBELLIOUS in suburban popular culture. In this comedy-horror, there exists a demon that infects the right hands of only the most useless and idle losers in order to further its ritualistic ends. Our teenage stoner hero -- the latest host -- is such a miserable burnout that his parents go missing for TWO days, and he doesn’t get concerned until he discovers the knife he uses to spread his mayonnaise has *blood* on it. He and his buds find dead bodies, *more* people die, and he realizes it’s all thanks to his out-of-control hand. The main conceit is intriguing and silly enough, but the stoner-hero’s STONER ZOMBIE FRIENDS add the finishing touch to this millennial romp. The savage mitt puts them to their original end, but that supernatural death is NOT what makes them come back -- the great, Godly light is so far away it just seems . . . *easier* for them to jump back into their dead bodies. So, sheer sorriness can make a zombie! I have NOT seen that before! You get this fun, shifting interplay that never lets your attention or smile sag: stoner fights his own hand; cut to lazy couch zombie shenanigans; stoner and zombies team up more intimately for awhile; they split apart again; every kind of hilarious and/or bloody thing happens all the time -- a non-stop parade of fun, gross, INSANE scenarios. Seth Green and his chubby counterpart are the quintessential undead bros; they’ve already bit the big one, so they don’t see why they shouldn’t kick back, get high, and eat burritos until refried beans ooze out of their putrescent wounds. Seth feels that their *living* stoner pal, curse or no curse, should just quit worrying about all this dumb crap and do the same.
>>204958726>anti-men wokeness.Terrifier 3 and 2 suffered from this too.
>>2049587862/2Mystery meat beauty Jessica Alba stars as stoner-boy’s love interest; she fancies herself a punk and keeps a notebook full of her awful lyrics, and his finding it brings them together. Does she even CARE that he’s covered in blood? Does she care that the cursed hand spasmodically grabs her ass? No! Furthermore, she LOVES having her rump ruffled and immediately wants sex! In a more modern film . . . you always *know* the face-slapping and girl bossing that’s supposed to ensue when a guy steps over the line; and the payback always comes just as you expect. That’s what I love about these older movies! They have their cheesy tropes, but almost *nothing* is off the table in terms of character interaction. Silly old comedy adventures like this were out to surprise you and make you laugh -- and they didn’t worry about holding ANYTHING back. Even when there’s no lip service paid to the Great Beast of Equity, things never seem so relaxed these days, do they?Idle Hands is really funny. It’s wacky. It’s nostalgic to the max! So why not an Excellent? Comedy or not, it seems hugely absurd that all the bodies in the backyard go undiscovered for so long; the setting that’s established is not quite surreal enough for this to be hand-waved . . . but maybe if the story went on longer, we’d see the issue wrapped up in a neat way. We’ll never know! (I also don’t like when the cursed hand throws Bones the cat through the window, even though he seems to land okay and run away. But stoner-boy never reclaims him . . .)
Yeah. Idle Hands was good.
>>204958802>Terrifier 3 is woke woke woke wokeWith its two hours of traumatic padding, poor camera-fu, crappy writing, and realistic torture porn drawn out so long it's as BORING as Sienna's mental problems, wokeness is the least of that movie's issues, anon.
>>204958651You can film someone taking a shit for an hour with no breaks as well, doesn't make it good.
>>204958115I don't agree. History of horror and feminism are entertwined. Obviously its not universal, but horror was an outlet for women who felt trapped in their roles, as well as being some of the only major mass-market films that had a woman in the lead role where the goal wasn't for her to get a rich husband or some shit. Horror is more likely to star women that other genres with a lot of action because women are more physically vulnerable and its easier to make the viewer believe they're in danger. This in turn fed a lot of feminist imagery, the idea of the final girl and all that, and feminism then fed back into horror films, celebrating the idea that these women survived because of their caution while the more physically capable men would throw themselves into danger, which is one big reason why slasher films are so popular with women (in addition to them wanting to be pinned down and fucked by the slashers, of course).Horror films and stories are also filled with tales of women getting revenge from beyond the grave.Fornthe same reason, a lot of horror game protagonists are women and were filling up lists of "top female game protagonists" for a long time.
It just shows how smart and capable Eve is, making Sofia reevaluate her initial analysis of the sex worker*sigh..
>>204958470Very wrong and confused take. For starters, keep in mind feminists have criticized horror throughout history. Recent directors such as Coralie Fargeat, Anna Biller or Julia Ducournau (to mention 3 of the few women directors who do have some talent) openly approach the genre with a type of "critical" perspective.Shelley and Shirley Jackson were outliers in 2 senses: not many women have contributed to the genre and both of those have done so in a way that's not related to their gender or personal views whatever they were. The prevalence of women as protagonists usually means they're victims or at best survivors, which makes sense since they're weaker. There are no major female horror characters and ultimately horror is much more NY Ripper than, say, Alien Romulus
>>204958684>Odd, I liked Noroi quite a bit. I guess high expectations can sour your experience a bit when it doesn't live up to itI was giving it a real go and enjoying it at first, but the story just developed in a way that I felt I've already seen a million times, and when that's the case a 2 hour runtime starts to drag and the payoff gets dulled.>How was The Suckling? Name stuck out to me so I googled it & the short description makes it seem like a horrendously bad piece of slop, lmaoIt is bad slop, but it's the kind of slop I've grown fond of. >>204958972>History of horror and feminism are entertwined.Feminists themselves strongly disagree with you. Horror has been vilified as "misogynistic" for decades. Women authors have been outnumbered by males to the tune of, say, 1 to 50 or so. No female directors have established themselves in the horror genre and the newcomers I mentioned here>>204958987are novelty acts. In fact, the best woman director in terms of technical skills in the horror genre is discreet Emma Tammi who did an excellent pace/cinematography/blocking job in FNAF.The "feminist imagery" you speak of was overwhelmingly created and consumed by men, who are the drivers of the horror genre both as creators and consumers.

>>204959559>Emma Tammi who did an excellent pace/cinematography/blocking job in FNAF.There's something weird about this one. I wonder if she herself was being directed by the FNAF creator guy. Because there wasn't a lot of interviews with her or details about her vision.
>>204958186who's pic related?
>>204959480Carrie was another exception for which literally hundreds of male counterexamples could be found. It's yet another exception that proves the rule.Do keep going if you want to, just don't fool yourself by pretending these are anything but a fringe in the major structure of horror main characters.
1/2 Rating system: Excellent!Worth a watch! Good Job! Not Worth Watching! (well-made but pointless and dull)Hot Garbage! The Faculty (1998) – An Excellent effort from director Robert Rodriguez, it injects The Breakfast Club FULL of alien, body-snatching parasites who guzzle water like it’s going out of style. We have a cast of engaging characters who have *very* unique appearances, so you don’t run into that thing during wild scenes where you keep getting the chadly chiselfaces and the generic beauties mixed up. High school movie archetypes are represented -- but they’ve been MUTATED subtly before the aliens ever get to them. We have the wimpy nerd Casey (Elijah Wood), who’s possessed of Gumpish speed and courage; there is a proto-Walter White in Zeke (Josh Hartnett), the school badboy who knows a little about everything scientific and concocts SKAT, his hit street drug, from caffeine pills; the prognathous but sexy Stokley (Clea DuVall) is a goth who reads golden age science fiction stories, of all things. These slightly out-of-the-mold misfits from various social climes UNITE to take down the bodysnatcher threat . . . and of course, they learn something about *themselves* while they’re doing it.The first thing the movie does -- and it REALLY works -- is enlarge the high school and its grounds with camerawork. The football field is a SWEEPING KINGDOM. The buildings themselves are CASTLES, and the floors inside are as reflective as glass to bolster the illusion. All the broad, flat shots emphasize the enormousness of the milieu in the eyes of the kids who call it their second home (or their early taste of Hell, depending), and it really does put the viewer back into that frame of mind, no matter how long it’s been.
>>204959654I'm NTA but can you post 10 counter examples from those hundreds that aren't Ash
>>2049597052/2You get used to the BIGLY BIGNESS early on, but they don’t let up with it. Everything, even the school buses in the ending action scenes -- even the IMPERSONAL AND STORMY SKY with its million diamond drops -- utterly dwarf the desperate human players . . . who are beset on all sides by mindhacked drones who notably retain a lot of their human emotion and ALL of their memories. As with many bodysnatcher / infection films, there’s a heavy element of MYSTERY. Who’s infected? Who’s clean? Who can you trust? And is there a TEST to determine who’s who and what’s what? The coach is the first to get it (don’t worry, it’s the first thing that happens and can hardly be counted as a spoiler); after that, nerdy Casey-Elijah discovers a weird little critter that looks like mutant shrimp mixed with a water bear on the football field . . . and he brings the thing into the science lab. Upon being dropped into a tank of water by John Stewart, it grows long, thin tendrils that I can only assume are used for hacking the nervous systems of hosts. If you’ve ever read the Michael Shea story “The Autopsy,” it’s a bit like that -- probably Heinlein’s The Puppet Masters too as it’s referenced right in the movie, but I haven’t read that one yet. With its paranoia, striking sense of institutional BIGNESS, SF mystery, scramble-and-fall action (slick surfaces plus youthful clumsiness?), and all the fun custom archetypes that allow for Breakfast Club relationship mix-ups . . . The Faculty ranks right up there with the best YOUTH HORROR of the late nineties.
>>204959559Yeah I don't buy that feminists would disagree with me. They'll complain about certain aspects of the films but there are a large amount of films that are held up by them as feminist classics--often not because of any intention of the creator. You may have also misunderstood me--my point was, for example, the idea of the final girl became a feminist trope, not that it originally came about from a feminist place.I also don't buy that horror is overwhelmingly consumed by men. There's a fashion movement going on right now for women's clothes based on horror protagonists, I've known so many women who are into horror, a huge part of Japan's horror tradition comes from shoujo magazines. I don't think they overwhelm the men or anything, but the number of women into horror is more than most genres outside of romance/drama.
>>204959559>FNAF.lol retard
