I figured. I watched Modesty Blaise a month or two ago and that character isn't like that at all. And I'm confused by where you finds characters like I described in the Austin Power films. Who exactly are you referring to? Maybe it's just been too long since I've seen the Austin Powers films because I don't recall any of the movies having a character like that.

He's right though. The celeb worship in film culture is grotesque. Every hot take Tarantino has is flooding into our feeds. Every obscure movie has Martin Scorsese's opinion attached to it. We need a new film culture. A film culture that is based on ideas, rather than hierarchy. One that is about film instead of about clout. Ideals instead of identity. Spirit instead of aesthetic. Characters instead of judgment. Passion instead of politics.

Aren't there too many films in the world to make that sort of estimate? I can say for sure that I hate 90% of films in a certain genre, but film as a whole? I know that now. I choose to watch films for bullshit reasons though so I wind up seeing a lot of garbage. I can't always tell if I'll like a film beforehand but I can almost always recognize when I'll hate a film. And I do like the parts of Possession with Adjani, the ballet scene especially, the movie as a whole just doesn't work for me. I can appreciate that it was personal to Zulawski but I'm not a huge fan of metaphor. In fact, I hate metaphor. And symbolism. I think someone tried to explain the political subtext of the film to me once but it's just not something I care. I was invested in Adjani's character but not much else.

Lynch, De Palma, Satoshi Kon, Frank Henenlotter. I like the three Guadagnino movies I've seen. Ken Russell. Loved The Red Shoes, Peeping Tom, and Black Narcissus. "Age of Consent" was awful and I haven't watched any other Powell/Pressburger films yet. Frank Tashlin. I liked the two Anna Biller films but I haven't seen The Love Witch in a long time. Russ Meyer is interesting to me but the only two I would say I really thought were good are Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and maybe Lorna. Hideaki Anno's live-action and animation work. I still haven't seen enough Solondz but I really love "Welcome to the Dollhouse". Can't think of anything/anyone else.

>aesthetics guy
You think so? Cause it's not the most important, but writing does matter to me. And whenever I say that I get accused of being a plotfag but I can't enjoy something that's completely empty but kind of sorta looks cool. I don't know, maybe most people hear "writing" and think "dialogue"? But it's also character action, what happens, and why. I need at least something to hold my interest whether it's a situation (and even an interesting story is pointless if the execution isn't there) or characters, and then you can make it look cool from there. I did forget to mention Ralph Bakshi. And maybe Obayashi?
>I can give you recs of things that I think you'd enjoy, if you'd like.
I would appreciate that.

>>205668338
The Takashi Miike movie? Maybe if it's not anything like Audition, I really disliked that. But that reminds me, I was really into Battle Royale at some point. And I really enjoyed the first two Ring movies too, the Nakata ones, I mean. And I haven't watched anymore Kurosawa but Cure was great.

Argento and giallo is actually exactly why I brought that up. I meant to mention it in my post after
>But it's also character action, what happens, and why.
I can't put up with completely random shit happening because it "looks cool" but serves absolutely no purpose and doesn't say or mean anything. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage was bad but I think the worst I've seen when it comes to absolute nonsense in giallo is probably Fulci's The Beyond, Tenebrae is close behind though.

>I wonder if I should've named Polanski earlier, I really like Repulsion and Rosemary's Baby.
Those are some great classics. Polanski's evil vibes are amazing.
>Is this a joke?
Half joke, half serious. I always put some bait in my truth to annoy anons on /film/, but seriously speaking, I've got a theory that retarded b-movie shit is just as valid and good as the highest levels of arthouse, like GODard. It has to do with action, aesthetics, and the unsaid philosophy of violence, nihilism and sexuality. I know it sounds pretentious, but hear me out: sometimes b-movies can convey feelings that arthouse joints rarely even approach. Take the example of Death Race 2000: people think that the film is just about cars, but it really isn't only about cars. Same with Vanishing Point: people watch the film and focus on the speed, without thinking about what the loneliness that's in the film and said speed mean. It's about isolation, about feeling that your life is going nowhere and you just want to escape it all. It's about suicide. All of this binds itself perfectly to yesterday's conversation about Tetsuo and the gay themes in the film. Film is about intertextuality, mood, and vibes. For those that have eyes to see, and ears to hear, the highest level of /film/ is the lowest level of /film/.

Don't agree but like I said, it's been a long time since I've seen it so I'm not sure how I feel about it now. I probably prefer Viva of the two anyway. Ironically, that movie is essentially a remake of Belle de Jour.
>like GODard
I'd put Death Race 2000 over any Godard flick without hesitation. Even if his films actually were good, none of them have Mary Woronov.
>but hear me out: sometimes b-movies can convey feelings that arthouse joints rarely even approach
I don't think I can say I've seen much arthouse. Maybe I have, I wouldn't know. But if you're holding yourself up to a certain standard, if you want images that are clean and beautiful in a classic almost traditional kind of way and view certain things as beneath you you're limiting yourself hard on what you'd be able to communicate. Frankenhooker says so much, even just it's ending alone. Have you seen Brain Damage? I think that may be Henenlotter's best. I really recommend it.
>Take the example of Death Race 2000: people think that the film is just about cars, but it really isn't only about cars
Who could think Death Race 2000 is just about cars? The entire thing is about overthrowing a fascist dictatorship and critiquing the government.

Yeah, I can see that. I couldn't tell you why I hate noir films, especially since I generally like mysteries, but they bore the shit out of me. I apparently do enjoy some films considered "neo-noir" though.

>Yes, and you think so?
Yeah I think so. The most obvious example is Blue Velvet. But using it as an example is almost deceptive, because noir tropes and themes (or developments thereof) are almost ubiquitous in Lynch since at least then. Blue Velvet calls back to the 40s and 50s explicitly and that's what makes it the best example, but across his stuff since then his conflicts, relationships, and characters seem to be of the same stock as that of the noir genre.

Maybe that's more a result of the influence of specific people (Wilder and Hitchcock most obviously) but it feels to me like it goes a little deeper than that. I'm going to start thinking about that as I watch movies now

Regarding Zulawski, On the Silver Globe was based on some sci-fi novels written by his own uncle or grandfather or some other relative. The government didn't like him spending huge amounts of state cultural grant money on what was essentially a family vanity project which is why they axed it. Also, Zulawski openly hated the moral anxiety political dramas. He said something to the effect that they prioritized message over visuals/aesthetic, which was his priority in filmmaking.

Completely meaningless trash, and there is no formal element in his movies that says otherwise. Filmic equivalent of abstract expressionism. What could that Jackson Pollock picture mean? Answer = nothing. Yet the critics love to verbally fellate that shit.

Just Żuławski doing a Żuławski. He wants you to feel "filtered" so that you end up thinking he actually is better than what you first thought of him. Is Performance good? Jagger's acting career seems so surreal, with the Kenneth Anger joints and all

Ridiculously cute. I’d love to play the “kiss all the freckles” game with her and Spacek at the same time.
>I'd like to get a hug from a cute ginger woman
I wonder why that anon’s comment was deleted. Maybe because he spoke the truth?

because rocky horror always seemed like it took its gay idea from performance

Die revisionist.

Scanning films in the highest quality is the greatest service one could do to them.

>>205681751
I won. Archivists, restoration houses, and filmmakers all agree with me.
>>
>>205681847
And now look at the state of film restoration.
Ritrovata agrees with you, Cameron agrees with you. DIe Die Die.

nta, but what's wrong with scanning from 35mm negatives? I know nothing about any of this shit. I just watch films

I mean, can anyone still be convinced that only the photochemical color and light determination carried out during the step to the interpositive can convey the authentic, actual appearance of a film (completely post-produced in an analog way), and not a naturally pale, flat, low-contrast negative scan that is milky with black-and-white films and gray-greenish-yellow with color films, which is then maltreated at random with software shittery?
Doesn't anyone wonder anymore why many DVDs still showed rich colors and blue skies during the day or real black in night scenes, while the Blu-rays of the same films show pale blue skies during the day and gray milk at night? Why so many French and Italian films in HD seem to consist only of gray, green, black and gray-blue, with some unhealthily cold-looking piggy-pink human skin in between, instead of the warm ochre and brown tones and all the red and yellow nuances in between that the old color processes once gave this skin? Why you could still see it on TV, on video and often on DVD, and why you can sometimes still see it in theaters today, but no longer on Blu-rays? Why should it be more important to choose a form of presentation that is so alien to the nature of the medium for a touch more (unauthentic, mind you) sharpness, even though some of the cameramen who are still alive confirm that the look of a positive produced using the Technicolor matrix printing process simply cannot be reproduced digitally on a negative raw scan?
In pre-digital times, you HAD to take a positive from a negative in order to obtain the actual film image with its colors, contrasts and light accents, because the negative didn't have all that, it was the "blank", where each individual shot was then photochemically “graded” separately in the course of this first copying, and the result of this work must always have the highest priority if you want to reproduce the original look as much as possible.

And only in this step, the film grain, the entire texture of the image reaches its natural completion; a negative scan will always depict a somewhat smoother, less plastic texture (which often creates more spatial depth in the positive and makes details that have been decidedly emphasized by the staging and lighting visible in the first place), which is also a central point. Negative and positive do not bear their names for nothing. The films were always shot with the result in mind which could only be achieved by copying.
So we are now using a new way of visualizing the negative that did not exist when these films were made and therefore could not have been considered in their creation process (ergo also not the digital manipulation potential, alas!). We don't restore, we remix with the loose components, the beats and the instrumental tracks, but it really is like having someone else re-record the vocals. We're so gullible to think that 80-year-old cinematographers and directors have their 50-year-old memories together well enough to do the right thing with their material and not succumb to the temptation to play around with the new fancy tools instead – which they can do if they really want to, but without taking the movie out of circulation as it had always looked in the previous 50 years of its existence in the process! I would always place more trust in the documents of the laboratory (if still preserved, sigh) or a color-accurate positive than in an old cameraman or director (or even their heirs, which is also often the case, shudder). And since very few people have a direct comparison and know enough about these aspects, I fear that this fatal development can no longer be stopped.

It's a turning point in the way we deal with film history, the likes of which, in my opinion, there have only been a few comparably serious ones so far (similarly egregious perhaps the various nitrate destructions of state archives in recent decades), and it breaks my heart, really, sincerely, honestly, again and again. “Restored from the original camera negative” is a huge, devastating mistake.
