Arthouse and classic.Robert Altman editionPrev: >>205734535
Queen of /film/
Possession is DOGSHIT edition>Possession is pure emotionIt would've been good if it was, or at least would have fooled me. But that train left the station when Anna started going on cringe monologues and soliloquies that clearly have some sort of aspiration for profundity. They are so self-important, so gross and PSEUDO INTELLECTUAL, that it infects my view of the rest of the movie. It makes me think maybe I shouldn't cut so much slack in those emotionally charged scenes when it seemed like someone crosses the line into overacting. Because maybe that WAS the intention, maybe the director really is either just clueless or ridiculously pretentious. When it got to that point, it ruined the rest of the movie for me.
this is how I imagine every /film/ poster

>>205755643You forgot about the Ghost in the Machine - The Police poster. That's the real based one.
>>205755477I loved The Long Goodbye, but I'm not sure what Altman to see after that. McCabe and Mrs Miller does not look like it appeals to me. What should I watch next?
I just got home from a 14-hour day at work and don't feel tired at all. Should I put on a movie or will I crash in the middle of it?
Costaricanon is a "ball buster" now, this might be worse than when he was "anti-racist". I'm gonna stop responding when i sense i'm talking to him from now on.
>>205755730Don't get mad, bro. What's the problem in a little trolling? Do you usually get mad when people don't take your intellectual conversations seriously? Learn to have fun brah.>anti-racistI still am.

>>205755851I'm not the Kierkegaard anon btw.
>>205755954So? You have busted my balls like 10000 times since my ill fated participation in /film/ began.
>>205755730It's just not funny the way you do it, you bait an anon into having a sincere discussion only to 6 replies later go "nahh i'm just ballbusting i don't even know what you're talking about", it's just a waste of time that's not fun for anybody but you.
>>205756022No i haven't, when i joke it's pretty obvious and all the interactions i've had with you were pretty sincere.

>>205756872You're probably not as old as I am. In my experience as long as you're not working a demeaning job it acts as an outlet for a large number of social and psychological needs that you have. My last job was a phlebotomist at a hospital on the night shift and I just flirted with hot nurses all night long. It makes it more fun to do hobby stuff like watch movies or whatever afterwards too, because you value your time more highly.
>>205756830Downloading it right now anon. But go on without me, my internet is atrocious. Post your thoughts on here when you're done
https://letterboxd.com/laurenbourke/film/woman-of-the-hour/How can reviews like this be so popular? Come on this is straight sexism. If I were to say the same about woman I condemned to death. Why is it okay to make such cruel comments about men, when many of us are good people. The same type of comments are made at my school all the time out loud in the classroom, by girls are like 18. Like bruh, no way your life is that bad when you are so young and men have been that awful to you, to make you hate all of them. Fucking hell man.
>>205757026I might be even older than you, you have no idea how much of an autistic anxious loser i am. How old are you?
>>205757165>How can reviews like this be so popular? Come on this is straight sexism. If I were to say the same about woman I condemned to death. Especially regarding mass media talking points, people NEVER mean what they say. EVERYTHING is a proxy for something else. Literally nobody cares about sexism. The abortion debate is not about whether a baby is a human being or a clump of cells, just as much as it's not about whether a woman's womb is under the purview of the state or of the woman herself. Please learn this immediately so you can start to see public opinion as what it really is.
Finished Viy (1967), soviet fantasy film. A fine feature, last ten minutes were the best. Very good FX.I need to read more to finally be able to formulate my thoughts on a deeper manner. Not to write a million words but to write a concise, rich text.Anyways, if you're into folk witch tales and in for some man slowly discouraged by his own faith, this one might be for (you). Clocking at nearly 76 minutes, it's a nice entry for a double feature night.
>>205757354Soon to be 72 hours into 30 years old. How about you?
>>205757464Happy belated birthday friend.
>>205757460Roughly speaking, what is it that you'd like to express about Viy?
>>205757510Thanks anon, I appreciate it
>>205757464See, i'm one year older, 31. Happy birthday btw.
>>205757554It's not a particularly good film, neither the most interesting one but it's well constructed and features a charming rural setting that might draw some people interested in the curious, almost surrealist traditions of people in remote areas.
>>205757619If you’ve ever seen Mario Bava’s the Mask of Satan they are both based on the same Gogol story.
>>205757619Has some interesting shots (horse-ride scene) and particularly good artisan effects for the underworld mad-inducing little pawns in the end of the film.
>>205757460>>205757554What I should've said is that in my experience, it is extremely difficult to write about art. You get a feeling in your head and heart about whether you like a novel, a film, a painting, etc, but turning that thought into words is something I've really never been able to do except for a couple works I've read or seen a million times. But there's no better practice than practice.
>>205757642Have all Bava joints on my watchlist. Thanks for letting me know that fact, anon :)
the average soviet rom-com is better than 90 percent of Tarkovsky and shows about three times as much human understanding.
>>205756830post your thoughts and if they're good I'll watch it tonight. Altman is one of my favourite directors and it's insane how he mastered completely different styles film-to-film while retaining his unique sensibility. Even his last film is ridden with pathos
>>205757609Thanks anon. Looking for a job, or are you lucky enough to NEET this life out?
>>205757760What is the /film/ consensus on Tarkovsky? I haven't seen him discussed in the few days I've been here
>>205757853Trannycore, if you like him ywnbawsorry
>>205757853If you rate Tarkovsky you are either a pseud 15 yr old who just discovered film or you are a hardened cineaste who knows his stuff and has a high appreciation for film as an art form. There is no in between because the “‘midwit” opinion is to hate on him for being le slow and boring.
>>205757165that's the equivalent of a "yas queen" getting a bunch of upvotes on reddit or twitter. who cares
>>205757921or letterboxd, there are reviews on the same vein as that stupid theft of african american women slang, pretty ironic considering the people posting it would probably cancel you for saying cuh or something like that
>>205757809I'm getting a degree as a occupational health and safety technician in june, then i'm gonna look for jobs in that area. Been a NEET so far, there were a couple attempts of not being one before though, all failed.
>>205757919>>205757920I won't claim to understand any of his films that I've sat through but I do think he could put together an extremely aesthetically pleasing sequence.
>>205758051Most of his films are surface level and you probably overthink things. Sacrifice is the only one I thought was a bit “out there.”
>>205758024Nice, hopefully you'll fit into occupational health and safety. If all else fails and you live in the US, take a quick EMT course and become a 911 EMT. As long as you're not in a major city you get loads of downtime, loads of overtime, and a ton of life experience. It was my first job after some misfires too and it was absolutely kino

>>205757853Aleksei German is better
>>205758113desu the George Clooney Solaris was the better movie, even though it's pretty awful as an adaptation (literally writing out the alien completely). The movie is worth watching for the scene Kelvin meets Snaut alone.

>>205760758I wish the poster had just taken cellphone pics of the entire book and posted it here, only way to deliver the true intention of the AUTHOR
>>205760162>>205760206retard
>>205760850That's only partially true, because the intention of the author is always unknowable, always incomplete, and oftentimes unimportant. And my complaint is tentatively restricted to the ambiguity in his writing.

>>205761101>the intention of the author is always unknowable, always incomplete, and oftentimes unimportant. The intention is everything and an author's job is to make it clear, obviously not explicitly as such in meta but as a work towards something.>oftentimes unimportant.Literally is the most important thing in a work.
film niggas got a bit of that sparkle knowamsayin
>>205761523>The intention is everything.I couldn't disagree more. It is not uncommon, even in film, for an artist to betray something he does not intend to, or to otherwise achieve something he did not intend. I find it a regular occurrence in evaluating literature that what makes a work great has just as much to do with the historical/social/political/etc context, which the author himself may not always be acutely aware of. Authors never have the same critical distance that a viewer does, and it would be wrong to attribute as intention what is really unconscious influence
>>205761994As long as that doesn't lead you to a jean douchetism of over analysis.
>>205758661Kung Fu Master
>>205762259Yeah people definitely disguise their disingenuous reasons for liking something behind that sort of shit, or else plainly peddle political/social opinions as criticism. But honest and careful accounting of context can enrich one's appreciation for a work.Luckily it's usually easy to tell if somebody has ulterior motives when analysing art, or is otherwise just a retard posturing. If it doesn't make sense after an honest effort of understanding (doing your best to account for your own shortcomings), it's usually safe to disregard entirely. It's like reading Adorno's criticism of art.
We're all kung fu masters here.
>>205761391The power of cinema right here
I want the real Jon back
>>205761994Intention is everything for an author, doesn't mean it's everything for the interpretation by the viewer as he can AND WILL use his own experiences, bias and knowledge as tools to interpret the work on his own.Author's intention is just there as a goal, although majority of works are abandoned in an advanced state and not really finished, and as a guideline to showcase his own feelings and ideals.

>>205763212>Intention is everything for an authorI agree with that but I think it's a truism; "the author should try to accurately translate the vision in his head into a poem/passage/book/scene/film/etc."I just believe it doesn't make too sense to argue about what the author's intention was here or was not. Ultimately it is only one facet of how you assess a work of art, and it is not always the most important (or even an important) one.Plus, it's often abused and attacked (or defended) as a proxy for the work itself, which results in even less talk about the actual work.

>>205766016yeah, loads of them employ oneiric qualities all the time. i guess it depends on what you're looking for. those who primarily focus on it where the entirety of the work is dreamlike or what?

>>205766016For me nothing surpasses the eerie dreamlike atmosphere of the Cat People / I Walked with a Zombie diptych. The other Lewton-Tourneur joints and their 60s homage Night Tide can be added in there as well, altough they're not as effective. Another peak of elliptical eeriness is Detour, but it's more of an intrusive nightmare than a dream.
>>205766203>Detour2016?
>>2057662491945
>>205766165I’ve never seen a single Sarah Gadon film, but as a victim of Gadonfag’s shilling, I think I’d literally faint if I saw her in real life. I unironically want to randomly bump into her or just see her irl more than any other actress. She likes midnight cowboy… I like midnight cowboy...
>>205766276Isn't she a huge Cassavetes fan, she's definitely one us.
>>205766203>>205766189Thanks. I think I'm looking for films that feature dreams or nightmares prominently to convey a surreal tone
>>205766319She even has freaks too. One of us one of us gooble gobble.
>>205766336You’ve probably already watched Bergman, but some of his films are like a waking nightmare.
>>205766276sarah gadon invented handjobs (indignation)
>>205766355I've seen a few, but not all. Loved Persona and Wild Strawberries, could take or leave The Magician, Winter Light, Serpent's Egg. Don't remember Fanny and Alexander well enough but it didn't strike me as dreamy

>In the mid-2000s, RKO Pictures LLC was revived and sought to produce remakes of their entire catalogue slate. Tobe Hooper was called in to pitch for a remake of I Walked with a Zombie, and had contacted screenwriter Jared Rivet to help develop the film>Instead of remaking I Walked with a Zombie, Hooper and Jared Rivet settled on the 1932 Bela Lugosi film White Zombie. Based on the 1929 novel The Magic Island by William Seabrook, Hooper and Rivet worked very closely on the adapted script together, making sure to hit all the major plot points of the original film.>Hooper wanted to shoot the film entirely on soundstages to give the film a surreal, dreamlike look. Makeup artist John Goodwin was even called in at one point to do tests for the design of the creatures. The project was shopped around to various companies, with the title at one point even changed to The Devil's Breath to sound more marketable.>Despite talk of Ron Perlman and Tony Todd potentially starring, the film stalled in development for several years until Hooper's death in 2017.
>>205766552You're forgetting Albert Serra.
>>205766518Watch Hour of the Wolf and Cries and Whispers next. Those are two of my favorites and think you would like.
>>205766518You did find Wild Strawberries and Persona dreamy right? Also Victor Sjöström made some dreamy movies himself, especially his most popular one, The Phantom Carriage, but probably not in the same vein as the directors you have listed so far.
>>205766165>Has anyone here ever randomly met a director or actor/actress that /film/ talks about.I have not, but I was talking to a friend of mine these days and he randomly brought up that he had worked with a /film/ related director. I was quite shocked as I didn't even know he had worked in movies before.
>>205766596serra is the kind of guy who drinks his own semen
>>205766051Indeed, still looks nice to this day imo.

>>205766692They say Saltburn was about Serra frauding his way into the film industry
>>205766671I met Zulawski at a festival, he didn't wash his hands after using the urinalHad dinner with Kazuo Hara at another festivalAnd briefly saw Turturro at Sarajevo this year
>>205766783That's nice, do you attend festivals for fun or do you work in the industry?
>>205766016I have two films that I think fit what you want perfectly. The Innocents and Kuroneko.
>>205766783Ah Zulawski, such an unPolished gentleman.
>>205766016check Raul Ruiz! Three Crowns of the Sailor and City of Pirates achieve that oneiric tone beautifully
>>205766805I work in the industry
>>205766652Yeah I did. I'll check out the phantom carriage, thanks. Is it similar at all to Dr. Caligari? It looks vaguely similar.>>205766612I got hour of the Wolf already so I'll watch that next. Thanks anon.

>>205767546When I'm on the podium collecting my Palme d'or I'll flash a special signal just for /film/
Recommend me some /film/-approved right-wing kino. So far, I know of Gone with the Wind, Birth of a Nation, and Triumph of the Will (Nazi cinema in general). Anything else?
>>205767637The films of Andrei Tarkovsky
>>205767199Bresson didn't make a single dud, fucking impressive.
>>205767637The films of Dinesh D'Souza.
>>205763228>French
>>205767637There's none that I know of. Right wing art, in general, is notoriously bad, it almost always completely lacks introspection. NB I'm not talking about right wing artists, but the art itself. There are indeed some decent right wing artists, and they cannot successfully impart their politics into their art, which in no small part is due to the dumb nature of most right-wing political stances.>Gone With the WindTrash.>BoaNMasterpiece, but more so because of the mastery and pioneerism of the cinematic language than its politics.>Triumph of the WillSame as above, but Leni was probably much less of a right winger than Griffith, if at all.

>>205767905>Leni was probably much less of a right winger than Griffith, if at all.I really don't understand why she was never allowed to continue her career after the war, when Veit Harlan who actually went on trial for war crimes (over Jud Suss) was reallowed almost immediately. Just sexism?

I think between all these charts and other /film/ suggestions, we could probably make our own chart of actually /film/ approved right wing kinos
