I'm just doing a new powerfarming strategy where I download films in a disorganized manner and just watch them on impulse. I unironically feel better since I started doing that. My mom started reading about literature and she's 58 now; that inspired me to take pleasure seriously. She told me that she wanted to be a writer when she was younger. Many such cases.

My opinion of the day: I find it appalling that Ray tries to play the "there is le whimsical beauty in everything" angle but with the polluted shit infested slums of India. Have some fucking self respect and don't pretend there is anything redeeming about living in the literal biggest shithole on planet earth. I like some of his films but not the ones glorifying probably the worst life you can possibly have as a human.

It can go either way... adaptation can be good or bad. I prefer to create a reaction against my environment because it sucks... just look at the world; most people are miserable because they only live for their jobs and die without having fulfilled any of their desires due to fear, responsabilities and laziness. It really is like Kaiji: it would be better to just wake up and get told that you're dying in a year so that you stop being an NPC and actually do something with your life instead of sleeping through your life everyday until you day and regret it all. So that's why you try to be happy as much as you can, instead of chasing the boring ass paths that have been laid out for you. Films for this feel?

>>
Which director do you think is the most overrated?

Mine is Luis Buñuel and Pier Paolo Pasolini.
I really don't understand why do cinephiles praise these guys as if they're THE masters of their craft. I just don't see it.

For Luis Buñuel, what I hate the most about his movies is the fact that it's his kinks and fetishes disguised as profound bullshit. I didn't really like Un Chien Andalou but I can respect it and understand why it was critically acclaimed. Belle de Jour? Overrated as shit. He had a hard on for seeing an innocent woman being sexually corrupted, Which I get it, it's hot. but then he held himself back and I have to assume is it because of censorship and because of the fact that he's probably a pussy. Not to even mention how I've seen a better and hotter stories like that on hentai. Shame, really. (Los olvidados? Tristina? There are connections here but I did really like Los olvidados though)
For Pier Paolo Pasolini, I don't really see it. Salo was decent and fun but Theorem bored me to fucking death.
>>
>>205739208
the gangster films are his legacy
>>
>>205739242
how can you judge PPP if you only watched two flicks of his? Watch Accattone.
>>
>>205739441
I'm watching Accattone right now actually. so far it's decent but I still don't see it. I see people praise him the same way they praise Fellini and there is no way.
>>
>>205739242
>Mine is Luis Buñuel and Pier Paolo Pasolini.
Instant red flag.
>I really don't understand why do cinephiles praise these guys as if they're THE masters of their craft. I just don't see it.
But they are.
>For Luis Buñuel, what I hate the most about his movies is the fact that it's his kinks and fetishes disguised as profound bullshit.
Very surface level understanding of Buñuel, watch more of his films. The analysis of kinks and fetishes is also characteristic of freudian psychoanalisis, which was one of his influences. His films don't really have to do with "corrupting" people for sadistic interests, but rather with showing the deep psychology and desires of people in filmic format.
>Belle de Jour? Overrated as shit.
One of the best films ever made.
>Theorem bored me to fucking death.
I can understand that, it's a very dense and philosophical film. You need to realize that it's about bisexual Christ for it to mean something. Not one of his better movies, but not bad. The ending is pure pseudery, though.
>>
>>205739254
that's not even true tho. his three most popular films on letterboxd are Wolf of Wall Street, Shutter Island, and Taxi Driver. Goodfellas is the fourth
>>
>>205739479
You shitting on Fellini now, or just saying that he's much better than Pasolini? Btw Accatone is very good, but it's also dense. Mamma Roma's where it's at.
>>
>>205739498
you think letterboxd is a good representation of what an artist's legacy will be?
>>
>>205739673

>>
I watched Sisters of the Gion
I thought there'd be a happy ending, feels bad man
>>
I'm deadass tired. Every weekday. I can't watch films no mo.
>>
>>205739673
For someone like Marty, his legacy is already pretty much stablished. We all know Taxi Driver is his most iconic and acclaimed film alongside Goodfellas. Goodfellas is obviously his big mafia film, but Taxi Driver is just a psychological drama based in NYC. And one can easily argue that it's Taxi Driver that defines him rather than his later mafia works.

I dunno if I'd say "most overrated," but I think John Ford, Brian De Palma, and (while we're on the topic) Martin Scorsese were more mediocre artists with moments of brilliance rather than masters of the craft.
>>
Marty SAVED The Red Shoes. Without the efforts of his film foundation, the film would've been destroyed by mold and shrinkage, as it was reportedly in terrible condition.

And I don't buy that, I think that's just an excuse of his to make those movies when in the reality, he just want to make erotic movies and why I said that he's holding himself back in that regard which make those movies so boring.
>freudian psychoanalisis
I know that it's about that, but then it's such a surface level storytelling and he's so afraid to actually go all the way.

You know who I think did this thing way better than Luis Buñuel? Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac. And the thing about him that I really like is that, at least he's honest about the fact that these things is turning him on. He cares about the story, the characters and he doesn't shy away from erotica nature of the movie. Which mean if you hate that, you can just easily hates him. there is no excuse whereas every times I talk about Buñuel, people always come up with excuses rather than just be honest about it.

>>205739554
I'm say that to me, I think he's just far better than Pasolini and 8 and a half alone is enough to prove my statement. :3
Alright I'll check out Mamma Roma once I'm done with Accattone.

>How have you been? Did you stop wasting your life
Everything sucks but at least now I'm trying to watch my kinos. I have watched like 18 so far this month, mostly sloppa though. The chronological thing isn't a meme kek.
I also finished a game, that takes willpower (and patience) for me.
>My mom started reading about literature and she's 58 now.
>She told me that she wanted to be a writer when she was younger.
For writing is never too late. Still wondering what mastermind is psyoping all gen z on thinking they wasted their lives so early without selling them a solution (which I'd think it's the logical reason behind a thing like that). Either that or I'm too much of a depressive fuck.
I'm too on getting back on track with /lit/, been years since I've finished a work. I have my mind on latin american realismo mágico authors. Interested mainly in the least westernized ones (not chileans, mexicans or argentinians). I downloaded the two major works by Asturias, hyped for them since they feature a lot of mythology which I have zero idea about.
>>
>>205740272
musicals are lowkey one of the best genres. Wasn't there an anon that was really into discovering new musicals?
>>
>>205740342
I haven't watched that Von Trier joint, but it seems interesting. Buñuel might have got kicks from his films, but I think it goes deeper than just neuron activation for him. And yes, Felini is way better than Pasolini most of the time. There's levels to this shit.

>>205740361
I've been thinking about it, and the reality is that the only reason to be alive is to be happy, so I guess the only thing that matters is having money (ie,. a job) but only to finance your pleasures, be what they are. Happy to see you are doing better with your kino.
>For writing is never too late
It's always to late to start. You could die tonight. I always think like that: if you got no pressure to do shit, you just waste your life. Better to do what you want to do in the moment than pass on the chance to do something just to realize that now it's too late. Everyone that has lost the chance to sex a girl on a once in a lifetime chance knows what the fuck I'm talking about.
>Still wondering what mastermind is psyoping all gen z on thinking they wasted their lives so early without selling them a solution
That's just the system; they want you depressed and hopeless so that you waste your life slaving away for the man. Just fuck that shit, do what you want and use the system for yourself, don't be used by it. The solution is to do (mostly) what you want.
>I have my mind on latin american realismo mágico authors

This is a vacuous statement that only serves to shift import from the question of the meaning of life to the question of what happiness really is.

Happiness is feeling happy. Pretty easy answer. The meaning of life is being happy. Ez pz.

You might find it common to forgo what you would otherwise want to do to save a relationship or help try to give your kid the best leg up she can get. Then are you really forgoing happiness?
Happiness operates on too many levels to be a useful concept.

If you feel really fulfilled and balanced with the fent, then that's on you, but the thing is that that happiness is not sustainable. The idea of happiness implies that you want to prolong it as much as possible while actually living a fulfilling and balanced life while achieving it. The problem with the world is that there's too much pain, too much discipline, and too little happiness.

I enjoyed all of them. Not really any nostalgia, as Spielberg has never been one of my favorite directors and I only watched Indy and Jaws as a kid. I actually watched ET for the first time as an adult (same with Schindler's), and realized that he indeed was special, not like that hack George Lucas with his shitty manchild Star Wars saga. Shitty since day one.

Any 70s or 80s Spieljoint will give me a great time. Simple as.

>The idea of happiness implies that you want to prolong it as much as possible
Says who? You cannot reduce the meaning of life down to "happiness," you need to add some other aspects like balance and fulfillment, neither of which are the same as happiness. Realistically I don't think either of those modifications add up to a sensible or even workable answer either.

>The problem with the world is that there's too much pain, too much discipline, and too little happiness.
I think this is a little too simplistic too. Don't you think it's possible that some level of pain and/or discipline can augment one's capacity/appreciation for happiness?
>>
>>205741850

>You cannot reduce the meaning of life down to "happiness,"
You actually can, as the meaning of life as of now is a completely subjective concept. When science discovers the objective meaning of life, I will accept defeat, but for now, the meaning of life for me is to be happy.
>Don't you think it's possible that some level of pain and/or discipline can augment one's capacity/appreciation for happiness?
Only in the level that you hopefully realize how useless it is to suffer and how fulfilling it is to be happy, and then accept that all necessary suffering is only worth it insofar as you can get happiness out of it, ie., working a shitty job so that you can have security to watch kino, pay for hookers and alcohol, etc.

>>

>>
>>205742183
>You actually can
I was talking about you specifically, because you introduced conditions to the happiness that you're trying to maximize: balance and fulfillment.
More likely anyway, your reason for living (aka your definition of happiness) is something you construct ad-hoc or post-hoc; we are all very gifted at lying to ourselves.
You're stuck here like most others by virtue of a strong instinct for self-preservation combined with an insatiable desire to satisfy other strong instincts (or their proxies).
If you need any further evidence, step into any board and care or nursing home where families abandon their elderly to a miserable rest-of-existence and ask the residents whether or not they'd be interested in assisted suicide, and figure out why they aren't. You think you'd be any different?

>Only in the level that you hopefully realize how useless it is to suffer and how fulfilling it is to be happy, and then accept that all necessary suffering is only worth it insofar as you can get happiness out of it, ie., working a shitty job so that you can have security to watch kino, pay for hookers and alcohol, etc.
I think it goes deeper than that. Life is not so simple that you can neatly measure experiences on a sliding scale where one end is "suffering" and the other is "happy."

Of course, I've had a horrible life, like literally PTSD inducing ass life that has drove me to suicide attempts many times, but I've seen that people that have gone through the worst tend to realize the fastest that life is not worth living if you're not actually trying to be happy on the regular. It's a strong cope, but a cope necessary to survive and hopefully be happy while doing it.

I didn't get an answer last thread, so I decided to watch Pablo Lamar's The Last Land. judging by the poster and name, I was expecting something similar to a James Benning film, but there is an actual story here. it's a pretty by the numbers minimalist, slow cinema film, but it did have a couple parts that I thought were very good. it reminded my a bit of La Libertad or Silent Light at some parts, though not as good as either of those. still I would recommend if anyone is looking for some more slow cinema. 7/10

Andrzej Żuławski’s Diabeł (1972) is a must watch for strange film fans. Żuławski, most known for Possession (1981), made something special here. The movie is blanketed in a sense of foreboding. Every frame is like something ripped from one of Francisco Goya’s Black Paintings. The audio frightening enough to sound ripped from a nightmare.

At the start a stranger (riding a horse through a Prussian invasion on a castle) rescues our protagonist Jakub from a prison. Jakub has been tortured previous to our meeting him and he’s already somewhat mad. The stranger murders Jakub’s friend, sets him on a horse with a nun, then sends him back home. It’s here where the stranger begins his plot of turning a man turned mad from torture against his own friends and family. Whispering his worse fears into his ears. Making their murder seem seductive.

The stranger’s whispers become actual visions represented on the screen. It’s hard to tell where the nightmare ends, and reality starts. But honestly? It doesn’t matter. That aspect is part of the point. The stranger always wanted to be a dancer. And as an active viewer you feel lost in his wretched waltz. Locations come a go. As do characters live and dead. Our protagonist doesn’t resist long against his dark urges. He seems to care more about the “why” than the “how”. And the nun? She doesn’t have a lot to say here. Our representation of good seems content to watch evil unfold in horror.

The Devil is a film that didn’t see the light of day for fifteen years. The communist party of Poland banned it as not fit for society. Not surprising considering the thinly veiled criticism’s of their party on display. Blacklisted from filmmaking in his home country Zulawski was forced to flee to France to continue his trade. This led to the eventual creation of Possession and the rest is history. But, if you’ve only seen the latter, then I implore you to see the former. Diabel is a dark gift for anyone willing to see suffering through a dance.

>Did you know Albert Camus invented existentialism?
I did not, thanks. I can speak Spanish, by the way.

Camus was heavily inspired by his thoughts. You’ve never read either of them. Kierkegaard is the original and the best of them all.

Thanks for walking back your retarded droolings, but then you go and use the p word.
What a dumb bastard.

All you're saying demonstrates concerning levels of newfaggery. Camus invented existentialism because he was the first frenchman to say that existence is absurd and death is the answer, Kierkeegard just talked shit about anxiety, love and death.

>Possession is pure emotion
It would've been good if it was, or at least would have fooled me. But that train left the station when Anna started going on cringe monologues and soliloquies that clearly have some sort of aspiration for profundity. They are so self-important, so gross and PSEUDO INTELLECTUAL, that it infects my view of the rest of the movie.

It makes me think maybe I shouldn't cut so much slack in those emotionally charged scenes when it seemed like someone crosses the line into overacting. Because maybe that WAS the intention, maybe the director really is either just clueless or ridiculously pretentious. When it got to that point, it ruined the rest of the movie for me.

How am i hater, i genuinely asked for his best 3 films other than Possession so i could watch them you fucking asshole, i'm not the one who was talking shit about him you gargantuan retard.
>>
>>205755203
You just wouldn't get it bro, you need to pay more attention to the themes next time.
>>
>>205755174
No he did not. Kierkegaard literally said on the strength of the absurd we must believe to become true knights of faith. Camus is just a lesser Kierkegaard who never became a knight of faith. I truly believe he misunderstood him.

That's why Camus is better and more complete than Kierkeegard. He did 3 phases of existentialism: indifference, obsession and compassion. Kierkeegard just did his whole christian thing without regards to other kinds of faith. Did you even read him at all?
>>
>>205755174
Existentialism is not about life being absurd. It's about man finding meaning as a conscious process. Simple as, you're wrong.
>>
We're all knights of faith here.
>>
>>205755373
I was right all along: existentialism is all about the absurd of life. Sartre said so in Nausea.

Keep it down lil bro, adults are talking

I’m so tired of speaking to you. There are 5 levels of Kierkegaard that do not require you to be a Christian to understand or feel it. He just often goes to the Bible to get his point across, but he often interprets in wholly original and unorthodox ways. I don’t think you comprehend what you’re reading. Maybe, go back and reread him yourself. I’m done speaking with you bro. Keep reading your hogwash that is Camus.

I cannot stand non english language films, as someone who only speaks english. I feel like i'm always missing out reading subtitles, my eyes are wandering towards text instead of the image the filmmaker intended for me to see, and i feel that makes my viewing experience much more shallow. is this unreasonable?
