Possession is DOGSHIT edition

>Possession is pure emotion
It would've been good if it was, or at least would have fooled me. But that train left the station when Anna started going on cringe monologues and soliloquies that clearly have some sort of aspiration for profundity. They are so self-important, so gross and PSEUDO INTELLECTUAL, that it infects my view of the rest of the movie.

It makes me think maybe I shouldn't cut so much slack in those emotionally charged scenes when it seemed like someone crosses the line into overacting. Because maybe that WAS the intention, maybe the director really is either just clueless or ridiculously pretentious. When it got to that point, it ruined the rest of the movie for me.

You're probably not as old as I am. In my experience as long as you're not working a demeaning job it acts as an outlet for a large number of social and psychological needs that you have. My last job was a phlebotomist at a hospital on the night shift and I just flirted with hot nurses all night long. It makes it more fun to do hobby stuff like watch movies or whatever afterwards too, because you value your time more highly.

How can reviews like this be so popular? Come on this is straight sexism. If I were to say the same about woman I condemned to death. Why is it okay to make such cruel comments about men, when many of us are good people. The same type of comments are made at my school all the time out loud in the classroom, by girls are like 18. Like bruh, no way your life is that bad when you are so young and men have been that awful to you, to make you hate all of them. Fucking hell man.
>>
>>205757026
I might be even older than you, you have no idea how much of an autistic anxious loser i am. How old are you?

>How can reviews like this be so popular? Come on this is straight sexism. If I were to say the same about woman I condemned to death.
Especially regarding mass media talking points, people NEVER mean what they say. EVERYTHING is a proxy for something else. Literally nobody cares about sexism. The abortion debate is not about whether a baby is a human being or a clump of cells, just as much as it's not about whether a woman's womb is under the purview of the state or of the woman herself. Please learn this immediately so you can start to see public opinion as what it really is.

Finished Viy (1967), soviet fantasy film. A fine feature, last ten minutes were the best. Very good FX.
I need to read more to finally be able to formulate my thoughts on a deeper manner. Not to write a million words but to write a concise, rich text.
Anyways, if you're into folk witch tales and in for some man slowly discouraged by his own faith, this one might be for (you). Clocking at nearly 76 minutes, it's a nice entry for a double feature night.

If you’ve ever seen Mario Bava’s the Mask of Satan they are both based on the same Gogol story.
>>
>>205757619
Has some interesting shots (horse-ride scene) and particularly good artisan effects for the underworld mad-inducing little pawns in the end of the film.
>>
>>205757460
>>205757554
What I should've said is that in my experience, it is extremely difficult to write about art. You get a feeling in your head and heart about whether you like a novel, a film, a painting, etc, but turning that thought into words is something I've really never been able to do except for a couple works I've read or seen a million times. But there's no better practice than practice.
>>
>>205757642
Have all Bava joints on my watchlist. Thanks for letting me know that fact, anon :)

The intention is everything and an author's job is to make it clear, obviously not explicitly as such in meta but as a work towards something.
>oftentimes unimportant.
Literally is the most important thing in a work.
>>
film niggas got a bit of that sparkle knowamsayin
>>
>>205761523
>The intention is everything.
I couldn't disagree more. It is not uncommon, even in film, for an artist to betray something he does not intend to, or to otherwise achieve something he did not intend. I find it a regular occurrence in evaluating literature that what makes a work great has just as much to do with the historical/social/political/etc context, which the author himself may not always be acutely aware of. Authors never have the same critical distance that a viewer does, and it would be wrong to attribute as intention what is really unconscious influence

>>205761994
As long as that doesn't lead you to a jean douchetism of over analysis.

Kung Fu Master
>>
>>205762259
Yeah people definitely disguise their disingenuous reasons for liking something behind that sort of shit, or else plainly peddle political/social opinions as criticism. But honest and careful accounting of context can enrich one's appreciation for a work.

Luckily it's usually easy to tell if somebody has ulterior motives when analysing art, or is otherwise just a retard posturing. If it doesn't make sense after an honest effort of understanding (doing your best to account for your own shortcomings), it's usually safe to disregard entirely. It's like reading Adorno's criticism of art.

>>
>>205761994
Intention is everything for an author, doesn't mean it's everything for the interpretation by the viewer as he can AND WILL use his own experiences, bias and knowledge as tools to interpret the work on his own.
Author's intention is just there as a goal, although majority of works are abandoned in an advanced state and not really finished, and as a guideline to showcase his own feelings and ideals.

>Intention is everything for an author
I agree with that but I think it's a truism; "the author should try to accurately translate the vision in his head into a poem/passage/book/scene/film/etc."

I just believe it doesn't make too sense to argue about what the author's intention was here or was not. Ultimately it is only one facet of how you assess a work of art, and it is not always the most important (or even an important) one.

Plus, it's often abused and attacked (or defended) as a proxy for the work itself, which results in even less talk about the actual work.

I just finished Gosford Park. I gotta say it was relatively disappointing. Spent way too long to get going. It would've been interesting had the characters been, the performances were fine, but the characters were as stiff as the setting. Considering the direction it went at the end of the second act, just comes off as poor pacing. Weird coming from Altman.

For me nothing surpasses the eerie dreamlike atmosphere of the Cat People / I Walked with a Zombie diptych. The other Lewton-Tourneur joints and their 60s homage Night Tide can be added in there as well, altough they're not as effective. Another peak of elliptical eeriness is Detour, but it's more of an intrusive nightmare than a dream.

>In the mid-2000s, RKO Pictures LLC was revived and sought to produce remakes of their entire catalogue slate. Tobe Hooper was called in to pitch for a remake of I Walked with a Zombie, and had contacted screenwriter Jared Rivet to help develop the film
>Instead of remaking I Walked with a Zombie, Hooper and Jared Rivet settled on the 1932 Bela Lugosi film White Zombie. Based on the 1929 novel The Magic Island by William Seabrook, Hooper and Rivet worked very closely on the adapted script together, making sure to hit all the major plot points of the original film.
>Hooper wanted to shoot the film entirely on soundstages to give the film a surreal, dreamlike look. Makeup artist John Goodwin was even called in at one point to do tests for the design of the creatures. The project was shopped around to various companies, with the title at one point even changed to The Devil's Breath to sound more marketable.
>Despite talk of Ron Perlman and Tony Todd potentially starring, the film stalled in development for several years until Hooper's death in 2017.

There's none that I know of. Right wing art, in general, is notoriously bad, it almost always completely lacks introspection. NB I'm not talking about right wing artists, but the art itself. There are indeed some decent right wing artists, and they cannot successfully impart their politics into their art, which in no small part is due to the dumb nature of most right-wing political stances.
>Gone With the Wind
Trash.

Masterpiece, but more so because of the mastery and pioneerism of the cinematic language than its politics.
