Literally the only reason De Palma is disliked here is because he's popular. If he was some unknown clown the same people that are shitting on him would be full throated blowing him

Low tier Jia. Seen all his features and this was by far his worst. Very clearly and awkwardly cobbled together from random clips that have no real relation to each other.

It's like his last film but with documentary footage, it's his best film about the transformation of Chine precisely because of how it utilizes the time periods and different styles. It's tangible instead of fiction like in his other films. Normal aging, normal changes. It's also completely startling when he gets to the last part. Ash is Purest White or Mountains May Depart don't have that effect at all despite the time changing gimmicks. Cubist Godard like mix.
>>
>>205826555
I think that's a fair assessment, though mostly because of the inconsistency of his work. At his best he's pretty great

>>205826541

Just finished watching Cloud.
It was okay. It would have been 10x better if it skipped the retarded shootout at the end and focused more on atmosphere instead. The action just looked uninspired compared to everything else.
Also, this was probably my worst theater-going experience in years. Bunch of retarded zoomers using their phones and other people laughing at scenes which weren't funny.

Why was Sexuko Hara so underrated? Is someone with Hara's looks and onscreen charm were to star in a modern kino, she'd be a "waifu" on here for at least 3 weeks. I would imagine every director fighting to haver her play their lead, but she's only ever in boomer Ozu films.

I won't lie, I just finished Late Spring and Early Summer, and she's darling in both.

Does Tokyo Monogatari hold up at all? And what should I watch next? I feel that when I finish it, I'll be left in a void with nothing to watch. I want domestic drama and rising women, not the Samurai theatrics of Kurosawa or the "fallen women" of Mizoguchi.

Working on it, anon. If anything, Jia was TOO forthcoming. I started, basically, by asking him, "I've read a lot about your films but it's harder (at least in English) to know more about you as a person, so can you tell me about some of your most vivid childhood memories?" I thought we could use that as a springboard for other topics but he went off for about 25 minutes (though this includes input from the interpreter, who is actually his regular producer) about certain memories. So he talked a lot about a few small things. Thankfully, he and his producer kindly said they'd reply to other questions I had via email or voice note, so I'm waiting on that.

TL;DR, thanks for reading my work blog. Caught by the Tides is pretty great.

I saw a new film under the best of circumstances which is an a theatrical setting and other than some really interesting editing and a very fantastic soundtrack they're really was not much else going on for the film to me it felt like a very sort of self indulgent portrait of his wife there was no interesting history of China or any of the cities were took place in there wasn't really much to to go off of on an intellectual level and even on a sort of emotional level. Everything it did the Russians did the same stuff 100 years ago nothing new or groundbreaking that the filmmaker here is doing so I just can't really say that it was that good. The story about the gay guy and the young guy and all that stuff in the massage parlor was just so out of left field and so uninteresting I don't know what exactly he was going for but it did not work at all for me at the end of the day It was just an experimental documentary and that was it the fiction elements that came during the pandemic we're not that interesting and not really super consequential. I am so over the pandemic!
Black dog however was the greatest film of the 2020s it is also a Chinese film I highly recommended one of the best I've seen in such a long time perhaps in not just this decade but the last one too

Ratner, possessed by the spirit of F. Capra and using the idea of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", gave us this film starring N. Cage, as a man who has the opportunity to see his life if he had made a different decision. It lacks the fast pace of this type of hollywood christmas movie. Danny Elfman mad ethe soundtrack. It is not a chick flick by any means but a /film/ about real men. I have to give it a rewatch, but it's a 8/10 probably.

I am sorry that this came off so choppy I am doing speech to text because I am forced to phone post right now and I don't want to type out all these words basically in case it was not clear I think the film had a lot of potential but it got squandered by ass sort of meandering plots if you wanted to make an experimental documentary he should've just done that instead of trying to insert some phony baloney plot in order to appeal to Western audiences I am not a plot fag but this is just a very common sort of critique that if you're going to make a plot movie just make a plot movie What happens and instead is that he sort of pulled an Asian grifter move and he decided to make an experimental documentary but then lied about it and said that it's a narrative film so I got tricked I got tricked if you just made an experimental documentary without the plot that would've been fine but instead he shoehorned in a phony bologna plot that did not matter at all

Black Dog
>>
To all of the black dog contrarians out there wait until the Blu-ray comes out because I know for a fact that the only thing that's available right now are 6 GB web DL and a 20 GB web DL however it does not matter much because the web DL files are really not going to do it any justice I was able to see it on a beautiful DCPIn conjunction with a beautiful Soundsystem in the theater that is the best way to see it and if you see it that way I truly think you would agree that it is a real great masterpiece I want to urge everyone to wait until the remux comes out

L'Immortelle is a lite version of Marienbad and not great, Grillet himself admitted it was a failure, you can skip it and come back later if you want to.
Trans-Europ-Express and The Man Who Lies are great fun and basically a diptych; both essential.
Eden and After is his first color experiment, very abstract and rather polarizing, personally I love it; watch if you enjoyed Red Desert.
Progressive Slidings of Pleasure is the beginning of the end, self-parody full of self-quotations and in-jokes; uses a lot of little-known films as a base for its satire, one of them Le Rempart des Beguines, the rest I haven't identified yet; watch only if you liked his previous films.
The rest is further degeneration of the above scheme, less structural game and more referential playfulness, less montage and more bondage - a modernist's descent into postmodernism and a great mise-en-abyme of civilization's disintegration.

Good morning sirs
Last nite I was contemplating suicide again thanks to (along with other reasons) the fact that I don't have a top 10 films and that I haven't watched enough films despite my age.
Angst(1983) was amazing.
>>
>>205882510
I could only have a Top 10 if I only had watched 10 films. You can't realistically have a top 10, or top 5. Because it is all so shifting, ya dig it? I feel compelled to remind you:
>My father, who since 1997 has been a ghost, knocks on the door of my house and scolds me: "You can't have left out Renoir, Tati, Ford, Chaplin and Welles." I reply to the angry man who made me a movie buff: "I left out Vitalina Varela, The Groundhog Day, Accattone and one of Ophûls’s films that no one ever saw." It is literally a dream, or the superego pointing out undesirable omissions. Now awake, I read my 2022 list and there are so many movies I love that are missing: The Night of the Hunter, Sous le soleil de Satan, Finis terrae, Zama. But choosing one thing means giving up another, and the moment of doing so is an instant of madness, because the rational foundation of any decision nestles in a blind spot that refuses to be named. I would like to know more about the off camera of my decision, and I sense that arbitrariness has nothing to do with any of it.

Prospero's Books

Watched Psycho. Great movie. I like it more than Rear Window and Vertigo. It's easy to see why they call Hitchcock the Master of Suspense. Few since he have been able to match his ability to build suspense, even with all the shiny new modern tools.

Gonna watch some of his 40s movies next. Notorious and Shadow of a Doubt

Watched Psycho. Gape movie. I hate it more than Rear Window and Vertigo. It's easy to see why they call Hitchcock the Master of Obese Gaping. Few since he have been able to match his ability to build suspense, even with all the shiny new modern tools, of grasping the rim of his asshole and pulling wide wide wide apart.

Not gonna watch some of his 40s movies next. Notoriously bad and without a Shadow of a Doubt it’s a shitty movie
