The only conclusion that I've come to with the monsters is that they may have some knowledge of what's going to happen. They introduced the possibility of time travel with Julia and the rope she threw to Boyd but at the same time it could also just be whatever it is that's doing it doing it just to screw with them, as if the goal were just to create more confusion and disorder. It would explain why the monsters are the way they are though in the sense that if they, for example, able to dream of the future or w/e that they would know who dies and who doesn't so when they wake up all they do is move to where the corpses 'show up in the future' and just wait for the prey to fall into their mouths. It's like if they see some guy's corpse in their dream they know that person is fair game but the talismans get in the way of that because I don't know if they're protecting the people or they're just bait for them so it's easier for the monsters to interpret their 'dreams' or w/e.It would also imply that theirs a point where their dreams start too which is dependent on more variables that show is being coy with so it's just as likely they're as 'mindless' as leeches but with the guy jumping on Miranda to stop her from escaping suggests, to me atleast, that they're only acting this way because of some information they're privy too. It's like if they don't see Boyd's corpse but they see Boyd outside during the night they might panic because they don't want Boyd to know that until it's his time to die he's practically invincible from them or that's he managed to find a way to kill them off. So they taunt him into trying to make a dumb decision because they want him to think it's stupid but if Boyd shot at the nurse and breached the 'protection of the talisman' or w/e the monsters would just kind of be like 'well we know he dies in 3 weeks so this is kind of awkward'.
