>>I know it's important historically, but as a film in 2025, it falls flat. It's just not very entertaining, visually aesthetic or stimulating on an intellectual level.

It does have some entertainment value though, it has echoes of slapstick, with the man with the movie camera working in various oddball situations. But it is so much bigger than that with its themes of the working class, and mankind's union with technology.

It's films like Dielman and Meshes of the Afternoon on the other hand is, woman shows her pussy and gets praised for it.

Claudia Cardinale and Federico Fellini on the set of 8 1/2 which if you haven't seen it is literally the greatest movie ever made.

Anyway, 8 1/2 is highly overrated, but still a 3.5/5. La dolce vita, I vitelloni, La strada, Notti di Cabiria and Amarcord all mog it. Dolce vita is a potential top 10 film of all time.
>>
>>214761337

This will be the definitive way to watch the film until its restored 20 years from now. You're welcome /tv/.

describinng the theatrics of propaganda as good is uncouth and it displays a level of subordination that is frankly beneath me. i would like to take this opportunity to explain a little more about my approach so as to bequeath a more suitable praxis to those who choose to live the scum life. one, it is important to avoid films that generate an emotional response for a particular alliance or party during periods of wartime. for instance, a canterbury tale 1944. two, it is equally important to avoid films that draw parrells of and during periods of wartime by having its plot based in a different period of wartime. for instance, the hamilton woman 1941. these policies help direct anon's rationale towards a more neutral base so as to not be reactionary and unthinking in the event that dialogue or decision making need to be acted upon, accordingly. there is however one exception to this rule and that is anti-war films produced by nipon.
>>
>>214766075
anon may be wondering why the exception. that is obvious, the japanese are wonderful people, with a culture and language that charms even the most crude among us. it might be thought that these anti war films are not propaganda, but on the contrary, it was and is important to realign, depending on the outcome, the sensibilities of the workforce in order that the economy and thereby the staying power of the ruling hegemony remains in tact. this realignment is notable in japanese cinema after the war due to the influence of american occupation. though, regardless of the contradiction, japanese cinema is always welcomed. it is beauty incarnate and i love japanese women, their kiminos and grace-loving attitudes.

>When I used Claudia [Cardinale] for example, in Once Upon a Time in the West, she represented the birth of American matriarchy. Because women had enormous weight in America. And they still have. Because they are truly the padrone [owners, masters] of America. Therefore, when they are put into a film, I think they have to be put in for a distinct purpose and have a reason to exist. Not as some superficial or gratuitous presence. You see in Once Upon a Time in the West the whole film moves around her [Cardinale]. If you take her out, there’s no more film. She’s the central motor of the entire happening. It’s the same for Deborah [Elizabeth McGovern] and for Carol [Tuesday Weld] [in Once Upon a Time in America].

Fellini started seeing a Jungian therapist and taking (legal at the time) LSD around the time he made La Dolce Vita and 8 1/2 which explains why his later movies are the way they are kind of (better). Disgusting. The history of special effects is the history of cinema. Film is not the modern day church, it is vaudeville. I weep that Eisenstein did not live to see Star Wars, Tron, Blade Runner, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and the Polar Express.

Vertigo is only important due to the John Whitney special effects. 2001 is equal to Silent Running due to the Douglas Trumbull special effects. Get fucked with your pretentious Cannesshit, that is not cinema. Special effects are cinema. Buster Keaton is worth 1000 Michaelangelo Antonionis.

>Vertigo
My thoughts on Vertigo and Hitchcock in general:
In Vertigo, Kim Novak's position as a manufactured romantic idol is a crucial component of the film's power. It has often been noted that the story of an ordinary young woman who is transformed into a celestial beauty by a controlling man recreates the director's relationships with his female stars, many of whom were also transformed into erotic ideals under Hitchcock's own tutelage.

His celebrated technique is explicitly dedicated to power and manipulation (“putting the audience through it." "giving the audience emotions"); it is also. because invariably so transparent. the easiest of all cinematic techniques to deconstruct-it seems to invite the spectator to be aware of how he/she is being manipulated. His obsession with domination is evident at every level of his films. methodological. stylistic. thematic.
>>
>>214773244
The narratives are centered on power struggles. and Hitchcock seems to have seen all human relations in terms of the desire to dominate. One has only to qualify this as “all human relations under patriarchal capitalism" to grasp that in this he merely pushes to its logical excess the culture's dominant tendency. At the same time. the films continuously foreground the perverseness. the monstrousness. the destructiveness of the power drive (above all. in their perva- sive sense of the impossibility of heterosexual relations that are not perverted and sadomasochistic).

Characteristically. there comes a moment in the films where spectator identication (the mainstay of lditchcock's domination of audiences) IS abruptly broken and everything IS called into question: the moment in Rear Window when the audience sees what the protagonist doesn't; the "premature" revelation in Vertigo; the shower murder in Psycho. The Hitchcock villain (Uncle Charlie in Shadow of a Doubt, the U-boat commanthi der in Lifeboat. the Nietzschean murderer of Rope. Bruno Anthony in Strangers on a Train) characteristically dramatizes fascist tendencies and is its presented as at once fascinating. perverted. monstrous. and ultimately self- !“ destructive. his seductive "potency" revealed as. at another level. impotence. So. while the domination impulse pervades Hitchcock's work at every level, the films are not fascist flms: rather. they are films in which fascism is presented. dramatized. exposed. and dismantled. This is one of the major sources of their value.
>>
>>214773244
Why is Vertigo so over analyzed, it's just a le spooky twilight zone episode. It's only important due to the John Whitney special effects.
>>
>>214772879

Third, Hitchcock’s films have consistently dramatized the anxiety of the heterosexual male confronted by the possibility of an autonomous female sexuality he can’t control and organize.

>>214773276
Movies with dream scenes seem to get highly rated 8 1/2 and Wild Strawberries fairly. I like Hitchcock but people rating Vertigo so high seems like a sad attempt at Anglo's wanting a Hollywood picture to be on the same level as Euro/Japanese cinema which it can never be for obvious reasons.

>the same level as Euro/Japanese cinema

Whatever level you speak of, it is not a high level that you think. 500 years from now, no one will know the name Antonioni, Resnais, or Mizoguchi. Everyone will know Steven Spielberg, Walt Disney, Buster Keaton, and Robert Zemeckis. Sergei Eisenstein knew this and he tried to warn us time and time again that the arthouse grift is a dead end, that the history of special effects is the history of cinema.

There is a primal feeling to having a big dumb hulk of a man by your side. Not much going on upstairs, but, a man who will dedicate every hour of his day to providing for you. Feeling his big strong muscles that he would use to kill someone if it meant protecting you. Sergei Eisenstein knew this and I weep for those who do not experience the homosexual love of a man.

>a perfect undebatable 10
Art is subjective, lil bro. I like Kane and Ikiru and think they are 10s, but I don't like 8 1/2 that much and think it's more in the 7.5 to 8 category. I've got my reasons for it, too; for one, the film is much less interesting (to me) on an intelectual level than La dolce vita, which actually works with the world on a diegetic level. 8 1/2 is just Lil Fellini getting trippy and abstract, but to each his own.

You, a graduate of Screenwriting 102 might dismiss this method as casualness or even carelessness, but every shot and bit of business in his films represents calculation of the highest order. The characteristic Antonioni image consists of two or more characters within the same frame not looking at each other. They may be separated by space, mood, interest, but the point comes across, and the imposing cinematic theme of communication is brilliantly demonstrated.

The use of these settings to reveal the inner life of the characters also makes him a psychological realist. When certain scenes seem unrealistic from an external point of view, they usually serve to communicat the complicated thoughts and emotions within.

If realism refers to how we actually experience the world, which is the view I'm arguing for, then Antonioni's films are realistic in representing both the physical outer world and the complicated inner world, often at the same time (which suggests how fluid the inner/outer ends of the spectrum are when we depict human experience).

On the whole, however, Antonioni's emphasis on place and setting make him the sort of realist Bazin was fond of; and Antonioni best exemplifies the emphasis on imagery and the outer world of space and things. For example, The use of the island in L'Aventura expresses the barrenness of most of the characters and their relationship. It's the look of the island that resonates so well with the meaninglessness expressed in the characters: barren, towering rocks, lifeless and menacing.

>A Story of Floating Weeds (1934)
The first ~20 minutes are magnificent, a truly beautiful work of art; and could have stood as a great short feature on itself. Slapstick comedy, gentle naturalistic storytelling, an errant protagonist visits his stranged family, a fishing scene. I wished it had ended right there, I would have made a scene where we can see a close up of the lost wallet floating on the water and revealing its content: a photo of Kihachi with his son, or any kind of memento of their bond. Anyways, the plot thickens when a vicious scheme is webbed against the protagonist and his feeble family ties. I will surely watch the 1959 color remake.
