I'm late to the party this year, finally kicked it off tonight with Nosferatu (1922). First time watch for me, and while I liked the movie itself, I hated the soundtrack.

Apparently it was the original score written for the film when it came out, but I felt like it didn't fit the tone of the visuals at all. It was way too bombastic and melodramatic, completely undercutting the mood and making the whole thing feel silly. I'm gonna rewatch it soon with some dark ambient or electronic album in the background, so the visuals don't end up so suffocated.

What should I watch next? I'm torn between Herzog's Nosferatu or Häxan (1922).

Don’t Kill It (2016) – In this fun, goofy Worth a Watch, we see demon-hunter Dolph Lundgren (with a very unconvincing southern accent) tracking down an especially troublesome entity, a hyper-violent type of POSSESSOR. When it takes over someone, their eyes go black, and they starts killing as many people as possible -- often starting with the possessed’s own family. Fighting it is difficult, as whoever kills the possessed is the *next* to be taken and continue the spree -- hence the title!

The Dolph character, Jebediah, likes hookers and hefts a mighty net-gun, hoping to capture someone possessed by the demon *alive* and enact some kind of solution. By his side is a GIRL BOSS FBI character, but Jebediah remains the central focus. (Surprisingly, though she acts like a complete, take-charge bitch, she gets a refreshing amount of pushback, starting with the harmless deputy who refuses to park her car after she throws her keys at him; essentially, she is a *frustrated* girl boss!) The action is fast and splattery, and no matter how goofy it gets, you’ll be consistently entertained. Echoing indoor audio and a lack of artsy shots emphasize the low-budget nature of it -- but liberal split-second practicals of heads shattering and blood gushing add a nice sense of impact to the carnage. It feels so much shorter than its 83 minutes! If you want silly a horror action where script is a tertiary concern, but which has some neat ideas even so, this is it. (Dolph’s continually careless handling of the DEMON JAR is something else!)

At the end of Kills? That was one of the most forced "get them to point B" parts I've seen. They had no motive to do it, it was the worst part of the film.
I did like the ending of Kills though, a lot. Because they set it up earlier that he was looking out the window, but at some point (can't remember if it was actually the very end) they imply he was just looking at himself in the reflection which is perfect MM.

Video Dead is a very dumb, but VERY comfy movie. Highly recommended for the Z/pulp mood! It scared the shit out of me when I was like six and USA showed it on Friday Night Frights.
