We were just discussing La Cabina (215128330), so here follows my review from Shocktober '24:

(1972) – This thirty-seven minute short from Spain became such an institution that there’s a literally a *replica* of its evil man-trap tollbooth on public display in Madrid! Certainly Worth a Watch, it posits a world in which specifically BROWNISH BALDING BUSINESSMEN are at the risk of being caught in red tollbooths with doors left invitingly ajar -- and which snap shut behind them, allowing no escape. The film’s primary subject, after seeing his soccer-obsessed kid off to school, is one such victim. He screams, he sweats, and begs others for help (this happens in public and in the bright daylight, but the phone inside is non-functional) who soon gather and make of his plight a fun little circus for themselves. When the fire department shows up and brings out the heavy tools, our poor businessman falls even DEEPER into a world of absurdist horror he never imagined could impinge on his own mundane sphere.

Why is there such a complex system in place to do this to these poor brownish, balding businessmen? We never learn, but the piece is so short and atmospheric that we are not left in the doldrums of downtime long enough to *think* of demanding an answer. That is one of the strengths of snappy works like this -- including episodes of anthology series like Tales from the Darkside. The peppy jazz soundtrack adds an extra touch of the surreal!

I was pretty disappointed, not gonna lie.
It's weird, I've seen other older movies that have been remastered that look incredible with zero grain and fantastic detail, but a lot of older horror ones, especially French/Italian stuff, seem to be really bad. I don't really know how all of this works, I'm guessing it's just luck of how well the film was preserved or something?

they're not supposed to look like that and they would not have looked like that in theatres, you're watching poorly remastered DNRslop.
a lot of old horror movies were done for cheap on 16mm format, like the Texas Chain Saw Massacre, so at basically every stage of their existence they were grainy.

I feel like this is one of those things where purists try to gaslight you into not believing your own eyes and thinking it looks good when it so clearly does not.
Same thing happens with "filmmaker mode" that makes everything look like it has a piss filter over it.

I recently watched some old Barbra Streisand movie (Hello, Dolly) that was being shown on TV with my mother and I was shocked by how good it looked. Literally looked like it could have been shot last year with how clean it was. Maybe it had a big budget and was shot on better film or something. The point is that film came out in the 60s and somehow looks better than other films that I had on 4k that came out in the 70s and 80s. It surprised me.
>>
>>215128846
The problem with either rendering is that pixels are the wrong shape for your mind to not pick up on it being unnatural. The same frame on film doesn't have the problem of the smallest shape being an oblong

Grain is good. It's where the details of the film are. It'll vary a lot, with some film having a finer grain and some film having a thicker grain, but without grain you'd have blur instead

What movies have you watched in 4K so far?
>>
>>215128477
>>215128330
hmm found it rather drawn out in the 2nd half, the first was interesting and complete as is could've been a nice experimental film ala Buñuel if it'd stuck with that approach but I can certainly imagine just seeing this come on TV back then made for an affecting turnabout

Depends on the movie. I saw TCSM on 35mm in the theatre recently and it was like I was watching sandpaper. Black Christmas is also nigh-impenetrably fuzzy no matter what way you watch it.

>>215128980
Of course a big budget hollywood movie is going to be picture perfect. But 99% of horror movies are made with 25 times less the budget than that, on cheaper film stock, with less powerful lights. It's not a question of "not believing your own eyes" or "looking good", you can watch an old horror movie that is DNR'd to shit if you want, but it's literally REMOVING the detail of the image. In the case of AI upscaling, that's just a computer adding details that it's guessing might have been there in real life but is not actually present on the film print. In both cases you are seeing a worse image that was not taken by the camera itself.
>>
Is there any list or chart of essential /tv/ horror films? I want to see if there's any I've missed.

>AI upscaling

Unsettling at first, and pleasantly goofy in the end, I'll say! Obviously, red thinks it's just a figment of pareidolia at first -- and who wouldn't? Ever wake up to see a black-hatted man standing by the foot of your bed, then go back to sleep like nothing ever happened? (I wonder how often people have seen something *legitimately* unnatural, and just hand-wave it as a figment.)

The snapping and popping the girls communicate with had me thinking that they were mute, and that maybe it was part of a field trip for kids with disabilities . . . but it's revealed as just some believable little quirk they've evolved between themselves.

I do think it would have gone harder if the mask in the end had been more OBSCURED by shadow.

The image is burned into film, with the grain a result of the chemical process of photography. The picture and grain develop simultaneously as fundamental parts of the image.

Think of it like a painting where you can see the brush strokes. The strokes are there because that's how the paint got on the canvas. If you tried to sand it down and smooth it out, you would alter the image as a result

They couldn't rely on completely ignoring audiences back then the way they can now.
They didn't have total and absolute control the way they do now.
You wouldn't get completely blacklisted from the industry for going against the narrative the way you do now.
Yes they were in control but not to the same extent. Their power wasn't fully realised.

They hadn't switched their tactics to racial division yet.
If you think the representation of black people is the same currently as it was in before the turn of the century, you're just delusional. The past 20 years have basically been one giant humiliation ritual for blacks. They get sent back another 30 years every few months when some new music artist gets pushed by the industry or some new movie gets greenlit and financed by the industry.

Nah, there is a clear and concerted attempt to intentionally provoke racial seethe with castings nowadays for clickbait purposes. They intentionally cause controversy in order to get people talking about their shitty low effort movies because they know that otherwise no one will care about them. This was simply not the case 20 years ago no matter what way you look at it.
The exact same people control the culture, it is just the method of dispersion that has changed, and social media is the perfect place for them to intentionally poke the chuds every week for manufactured discourse.

I thought that movie was decent t b h. Not as bad as everyone thinks. My idea for that movie would be kind of like the slasher version of Galaxy Quest. Set in a lame horror convention, a killer is loose and its up to the washed up actors to stop him. I'm thinking maybe Bruce Campbell as the main guy with some other bitter actors who were never the final guy that are jealous of him, like the Allen/Rickman dynamic. Some actress as the third lead, a final girl that was only the final girl because she was cute and or hot. Then a minority actor so you can have some racial comedy there and a guy who always died to be the Sam Rockwell character and some fat autistic losers to be the Justin Long character except here they do die.

that makes sense, the dryness of it and how drawn out the realization is feels like it would fit as a comedic bit
it's like the mother doesn't like them because they creep her out and they disrespect her so they leave
but oh no they have to go back and now she's ok with staying because the dutch husband is just a weirdo which makes all the inappropriate behavior ok
and now it's the father that doesn't want to stay (this time the reason is more overt and definitive) but the mother is now confused as to why they have to leave?

Resolution, the film that comes before The Endless, it's the one with a micro-budget. It's also very good.
>>
>>215134948
>better than the Conjuring
Come on now…
>>
>>215134909
Didn't you know Japanese folklore is full of creatures that kill you by pulling your shiri kodama (little buttball that contains the soul) out through your asshole? Kappas for one, but there are others.
>>
>>215134986
Of course I know I've fapped to it
>>
>>215134944
Horror movies about poop?
>>
>>215135047
Of course it's Japanese.
>>
>>215134948
No, it's not bettet than the Sinister duology. The sequel, which gives the goofy, hardworking, fallible deputy the limelight, has been unfairly maligned.

And it's not better than Insidious, which all through its countless, quality installments (working in the tough framework of PG-13) maintain a powerful sloppa-soul.
>>
>>215132855
And what of the 2024 remake?
>>
>>215134986
What the fuck
>>
>>215135160
That's the reason the headless in Sekiro seem to punch into Sekiro's asshole when they kill him.

That's just time, bro. Accept and enjoy the treasures of lost times, including your own, and look forward to future treasures. Remember most of all: never think your taste so refined that you don't give things a chance. Also remember that few things are great in every part, but many are wonderful in a few.

Seconded.

It must have been a doomerpill for /hor/fags in the late 90s when Scream was riffing on the good old days, which was actually just a decade ago. It still breaks my brain a bit that ANOES and Scream were only 12 years apart.

I'm sure people don't seriously buy fuda talismans to guard against supernatural butt bandits, anon. It's just another part of their cultural heritage, like our Johnny Appleseed (who thought grafting was an abomination before the Lord), Paul Bunyan, or Freddy Foley the intrepid reporter.

thank you, sir. i really like the movie on rewatch but stupid me only now realized the complete absence of music.
