>Bernardo [Bertolucci] had arranged to meet me at noon for an aperitif at Piazza del Popolo, at Café Rosati, frequented by many intellectuals and artists. He was waiting for me in the company of a white-haired man whom I had seen with Pier Paolo Pasolini and whom I recognized as the writer Alberto Moravia. I wasn't expecting that encounter and was so impressed that I could do nothing but shake the hand that was extended to me. Half French, half Italian, he told us about his book and the choice of actors [for The Conformist, which Anne Wiazemsky originally was set to star in], which he approved of. As on the previous evening, friends stopped by to exchange a few words or sat down and joined in the conversation. One of them, a producer in his thirties, told me that Pasolini was adapting one of his plays for the cinema: he could only think of me to play the young woman, but he was convinced that I would refuse because I didn't like him. The strangest thing was that I thought he didn't like me. I tried to explain that it must be a big misunderstanding when we were interrupted by the arrival of a very handsome man who, in the absence of an available chair, sat astride a flower box
>He acted with charming nonchalance, shook a few hands, and hugged Moravia. Then he took off his jacket and loosened his tie, complaining about the heat and the thunder of some distant storm. He expressed himself with humor, seemingly oblivious to the silence that had fallen around our group, to all the eyes fixed on him. Pedestrians stopped to stare at him, and suddenly pieces of paper and pencils appeared from all sides. “Marcello! Marcello! Marcello!” pleaded passionate voices. I was sitting very close to Marcello Mastroianni and hadn't recognized him!

With all the waifuposting itt, I am interested in knowing whether the inhabitants of this thread primarily use female characters when given the option to in video games like I do...
I watched another Charlotte interview where she reiterated that Lars is so good at writing female characters because he writes the female leads as himself and not an "Other". Isn't this the same thing as me picking Jill Valentine over Chris Redfield in Resident Evil? Is Lars von Trier a crypto-'fu'nny? What compels men to carry out this behaviour?

Yes. I do primarily use female characters in games that have playable characters. I'm also more inclined to watch a movie if it has a pretty woman in it. I hardly ever read loglines. I make my decision based on the cast/screenshots.

Many secular filmmakers have unwittingly absorbed transcendental styles purely through internalising formal elements of artists they admire. This is why I say that Prurient Paulie Schrader makes Catholic films, though he was raised a Calvinist; as a Bressonfag, he subsumed that great Jansenist's sensibilities into his own. So even though la Chinoise are a secular bunch, they can still make transcendent films. Kubrick was the original reddit atheist who denied a spiritual element to his films, but what he did not realise is that his inheriting stylistic elements of Bergman through worship of his oeuvre caused a few of Stan the Man's movies to develop spiritual qualities of their own. Dr. Strangelove is a deeply spiritual and transcendental film. You can see a flicker of the Divine in the smoke when they extinguish the fire on the plane.

Transcendental Style is not a conscious attempt at transcendence but rather a formal style of filmmaking that lends itself to recalibrating the audience's senses, giving them brief glimpses of divinity. Anyone of any background can make a transcendent film if they want to, provided they have the formal rigour and the correct application of the techniques.

Ambulance is awesome and so was 13 Hours. I haven't seen Pain and Gain yet but all the movies I've seen from him outside of the Transformers movies have been exhilarating. I don't know how crap like John Wick and Marvel became "acceptable" action with audiences whilst Bayhem is maligned. Is that he expects the audience to take it seriously? Is it political, that his films are jingoistic? Who cares? Isn't all action just action? And he is the best technical master of it working today... I'm not an ardent Bay fan but I don't know why it will kill people to admit he knows his way around an explosion.

Across her 3 biographies – the first being specifically about Bresson and Balthazar (featuring a lot of juicy details about its filming, Robert's working style, and, you guessed, his advances on her), the second about the beginning of her relationship with Jean-Luc and La Chinoise, the third about her fall-off with him (which served as the basis for the Louis Garrel/Stacy Martin flick) – I couldn't find any mentions of Serge (or Jane), however, he was deeply involved with both Bardot and Karina. In fact, Serge's relationship with Jean-Luc has always been a source of curiosity for me, as I'm unsure if they ever interacted despite occupying a similar milieu.

>Aggressively bad B-Western. The entire budget seems to have been spent on one scene where a bunch of background extras mill around one street that is supposedly "Dodge CIty". "The Gunfight", on the other hand, is between two guys and takes around 30 seconds, or it might be an earlier one that takes 15 seconds. Either way this title misled me and Julie Adams is the supporting actress in this, which is certainly a choice. Basically no action, looks bad, is bad. Avoid.

>I TELL YOU IT IS ABOUT THE BODY
It is, that's what you "transcendental" fags don't understand, cinema is the most carnal of arts. It's an exercise in voeyurism. The most pervert of all arts. Film will not save your soul. It is the body and the world in motion with other. It is action and emotion. It is movement. Cinema is not spiritual, it's earthly. Your search for transcendence whithin it is futile.

You wanna be close to God pray the rosary, don't watch films.

We are bodies, but Christ redeemed us when the word became flesh. The word is LOGOS. There is cinema that uses LOGOS to elevate man. Even Godard, a dumb commie, understood how cinema functions and always worked against it countering the deleterious effects it has on modern man and his mind. He was right when he said that the 20th century was the century of the cinema (Histoire du Cinema). Woe is ye who enter the Hell of images, my thoughts are no longer my own, the images speak for me.

Absolutely, this is merely an american meme because americans are beyond filtered by expressive acting, what they call "overacting".
>>
>>216562773
>"I'm acting" doesn't actually mean anything as a criticism.
Yes, it does. It's when acting is technically good, but it destroys the immersion. It removes you from the movie and turns your focus onto the actor himself. During the drinking milkshake scene I stop thinking about Daniel Plainview and start thinking about Daniel Day-Lewis getting an oscar.

>>
>"shitnime"
sorry for derailing this into /a/ but i'd rather post here than there and think this post contentually fits here.

i just watched Interstella 5555 (pic related) and i'm so disappointed
>kino designs
>big budget
>3 years production time apparently
>influential musicians come to you, calling you their childhood hero and giving you an opportunity for a passion project
>no dialogue, just the album
>could be an experimental animation kino
but the product ended up falling for the typical shitnime pitfall
>draw 3 different drawings every shot
>loop them for obnoxiously long
>camera pans everywhere
the film is essentially a generic slideshow/shitnime music video stretched to feature length without making any use of the potential production values typical for the format.

i really hope Daft Punk didn't have the eye or exposure to notice any of this, otherwise i would be forever depressed if i were them.

i can't stand the limitedness of - or lack of - the visual language in this medium. if i were to ever return to it i think i'll only stick to features or shorts i'm certain are animated properly.
>>
>>216565934
This general barely survives thanks to high IQ people like myself and you want a whole board? It won't happen, feel free to join the film discussion anytime, my friend.
>>
>>216565973
>>no dialogue, just the album
That's obviously preferable.
>>
Just developed the “Chrissy Test” for /film/ culture. It measures whether or not a director can become a meme on here. It is of course named after Chrissy Moltisanti. Basically, if one can imagine it being funny for Chrissy standing outside a club and telling the director he liked one of their movies, that director can become a /film/ meme.
>Marty! Kundun! I liked it!
>Spikey! She Hate Me! I liked it!
>Louie! Pretty Baby! I liked it!

There has a recent effort to make Ridleyposting a meme on /film/. However, I can’t think of a film of his with a funny enough title that it would be absurd for Chrissy to yell out at a nightclub.
Sorry Ridleyposters, but he fails the Chrissy Test. I don’t think Ridleyposting will take off.

yes i always do when i have the option. i think people overcomplicate it. it's probably as simple as preferring to look at a delicate, cute girl instead of a buff, masculine guy. the male anatomy repulses me sometimes. i think it's unironically a more hetero behaviour to do this.

Question for Literatipetic as this thread sinks like legs trapped in quicksand through the catalog: Do you dig Rimbaud? He's my favorite poet. I've been thinking about Une saison en enfer as of recently... The way he can squeeze something visceral or transcendental out of the most quotidian or purulent (he's even got a handful of sonnets dedicated to genitalia, and they're genuinely good) aways leave me in awe. The mark of a great artist, I say. I own a bundle of his collected work and I basically treat it like a holy text, occasionally perusing it or consulting it when in search for inspiration....
