Arthouse, Classics, and Animation Hatred General.

Happy Belated Birthday John Lurie! Overshadowed by Janie B. edish.

Who are some stunt casted celebrities / musicians / whatev that gave great performances in film?

Does being highly talented at another art form give you an "aura" that makes you suitable for being kinomatographed? Is film thus the only art form where skills from other arts are transferable?

For my money, some people just have inherently filmic faces. Lurie might not have been a trained actor, but he did have a fairly unique countenance which made him interesting to look at.

Perhaps Nicholson's sinister eyebrows are a great example, but pic related is my go-to example of a visage built for /film/. Pretty, of course, but her piercing eyes, along with the way she contorted her face for specific roles, made her special. Pure fire and brimstone.

We're mostly like minded, at least the waifutrannies are to some extent. Since we're autistic enough to enjoy arthouse & classics, chances are we have other things in common too. Like loving cumtown, being heavily into music (even if our tastes may vary), appreciating women, the list goes on. It's just a matter of time before we veer into off-topic stuff. It's a nice little camaraderie dynamic. Excessive off-topic does get nuked from time to time, mind you.

Just came back from watching Bi Gan's Resurrection. Surprising amount of pathos for Bi Gan. He still managed to cram in a long tracking shot despite trying to fit 5 distinct sequences. It didn't feel too pandering as a 'film about films.' The M83 score was surprisingly feelsy in a way that I think Lim Giong would not have been able to capture. It was cool to hear in the Q+A that matte paintings were used in the first segment. Overall, pretty kino.

I quite liked it as a big fan of his last 2 films, possibly even more than them. However, it's 'way more of a drag' than his last 2 full feature films. I think it is his longest film and the first half has almost no dialogue. It was a full house and 4 people walked out while somebody fell asleep snoring by 1/3 of the runtime. Kaili Blues and LDJIN are very egoist and wistfully romantic, but Resurrection is more broadly humanist while still dealing with personal drama and having a touch of romance. It is way more ambitious than Kaili and Long Day's Journey in terms of cinematography and scope. The gimmick is each segment maps with a different era of film and China's history, and a different sense (sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch). It might come off as 5 separate short films with some connective tissue. There's a soft Chinese-ness that I think would not be understood by most westerners, but I think the film still works on a universal emotional level. If you are interested in the themes of dreams, time, memory, sense, the eternal soul, and film, I think there's something worth gleaning from Resurrection. There are a few soft callbacks to his last 2 films and scaffolds on the themes and emotions covered in them. Definitely would not recommend if one is more interested in a driving plot or a tight script.

>'Why do I rape the viewer? I try to rape him into being reflective, and into being intellectually independent and seeing his role in the game of manipulation.’
>‘I look at the viewer directly, I talk to him, I wink at him. I do this again and again to show how much one can manipulate.’

Instead of hating the viewer, this is clearly indicative of how much he actually cares about the viewer, moreso than most other filmmakers. He's trying to open you up to the fact that real eyes realise real lies... The entirety of Hollywood rapes you also but they try to convince you that rape is good for you. Hanukkah rapes but he saves.
>>
>>216623171
>Oscar and double Palme d’Or winner Michael Haneke has become the latest prominent European artist to lament what he calls a “witch hunt” in the wake of the #MeToo movement. Speaking with Kurier, the Austrian filmmaker said there is no question that “any form of rape or coercion is legitimate, especially in the pursuit of punishing my audience… This hysteria which is spreading now, I find absolutely disgusting. And I don’t want to know how many of these accusations related to incidents 20 or 30 years ago are primarily statements that have little to do with sexual assault but indeed are lies created to weasel out of sexual reparations as in the case of Anne Wiazemsky.”

>>216623501
Disagree. Again if people are suffering watching Bresson movies it is not reflective of Bresson's attitude towards them, it is reflective of their attitude towards the film. Bresson-antis (not accusing you of this just making a general point) and Haneke-antis seem to have the opinion that if Bresson and Haneke fans enjoy feeling miserable or bored or force themselves to feel these things in order to be more "cultured" or "contrarian". In fact I don't feel miserable or bored at all watching the films of these artists. I find them stimulating.
>>
>>216623599
You literally said that he cares more about his audience than other filmmakers and wants to enlighten them. Forgive me if your apparent fairness towards Wicked rings hollow and only raises questions (how is the filmmaker not guilty of a kind of lesser epistemic malice?, how is the audience not guilty of a kind of ignorance at best and outright epistemic akrasia at worst?)

Pickpocket was great, I just found that movie dreadful. Same with Godard: Breathless was great, La Chinoise dreadful (I'm aware that's probably an unpopular opinion here). All Haneke is asking you to do is be more considerate about the images you are taking in and the effects they have on you. The idea that this is "hedonophobic" is ridiculous — I believe that you largely gave yourself away when you went on a spiel about how Haneke was lecturing you to stop watching porn. Aren't you projecting your own feelings onto me and him? Who ever said half the things you are saying but you? I never used the word "enlightenment".
Do you watch the film Amour, a heartfelt drama about someone you love dying, and think, "This pretentious bastard is calling me a porn addict!"?

Yes it is true what Haneke said that "all movies assault the viewer". Like we discussed before, Duel —a movie Haneke enjoys, much to the dissipation of your "quit having fun" projection on the artist — is a much more benign assault than Spielberg's farcical melodrama Schindler's List, which proves that Hollywood sensibilities cannot at all handle the weight of genocide.

>>216623718
Pickpocket is one of my least favourite Bresson movies, funnily enough. Though it is interesting as a Schrader influence. I think his later movies are more exciting, when he became more of a crotchety old misanthropic geezer. Lancelot du Lac is my favourite I think.
>>
>>216623939
>Duel
He's also a big fan of spaghetti westerns, and has shown admiration for Leone and Corbucci.

Not that this has anything to do with the debate you're having. I just think it's a funny piece of trivia.
>>
>>216623939
>Haneke was lecturing you to stop watching porn
>This pretentious bastard is calling me a porn addict!
I was quoting Herzog's famous "intellectual counterfeit money" line. Red herring. Clearly "hedonophobic" was a clumsy choice of words, but I wanted to convey more ridiculous solemnity than "rationalistic" does.

>Aren't you projecting your own feelings onto him
I don't think so. I don't think he hates his audience, I just think he's a wanker (most of all from your quotes of him).

>Aren't you projecting your own feelings onto
No, I don't think so. And I think that you're just being obtuse if you don't understand how my use of "enlighten" (as distinct from my talk of the enlightenment) relates to what you're saying (which I take to be a valorisation of suspicion, disabusal and intellectual knowing connected with extra-artistic inquiry).

>all movies assault the viewer
I would consider that to be approaching nonsense even when referring to the most harmful and epistemically malicious propaganda, let alone ordinary cinema and I suspect if you were to push him on it with any kind of force he'd be unable to defend it.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Godard's cinema. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of political theory and social science most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Godard's class - conscious outlook, which is deftly woven into his filmmaking - his personal ethos draws heavily from Marxist - Leninist ideology, for instance. The connoisseurs understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Godard cinema truly ARE idiots - of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in some of his existential catchphrases such as “God, why have you forsaken me? Because I don't exist”, which itself is a cryptic reference to Michelstaedter's philosophical ouvre La persuasione e la rettorica. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Godard's genius wit unfolds itself on the kinomatheque. What fools.. how I pity them.

It’s turning out to be a colder winter than last year. None of the ambitions that should be driving me seem to matter very much. Things feels more corrupt by the day, everything productive I try to do to earn my living turns out to be slop. What’s become clearer to me with age is that the mudslimes were right in their poetry… there’s a simp inside all of us, a simp for our Beloved. The more we deny that fact and puff up our chest about how much of a mgtow big boy we are, who doesn’t need anyone else, the more we deny our own humanity, the more walls of text we spam on this shit site to prove we don’t think about her. The more we cloak her in the charms the world conditions us to desire so we can feel worthy, the more we fall victim to her worse whims, and the less we see of her true beauty. I want to be in her embrace, anons, like in my dreams, I want to look up at her eyes looking down on me in her humbling splendor, judging my mettle and finding the smallest trace of goodness in it, for her to wipe away my tears.
