RDA is a state-tier corporation anon. It’s a British East India style quasi-state entity on a global scale. The lore is that the Venture Star took the equivalent resources of a small country, and even its partially full cargo sold for enough to make a profit. The bigger problem for humans is that Pandora is way too far away. A 16 year round trip is simply unmanageable. Europeans were working with a 3 month round trip to the New World, and even they couldn’t establish a permanent presence in North America for nearly a century. The human presence on Pandora feels tenuous and fragile because it is tenuous and fragile. Humanity is way overstretching itself here, and it’s only the lack of Navii coordination that has allowed them to get the foothold they did. I mean the Jake Sully/Navii counterinsurgency news hasn’t even reached Earth yet. The colonist are acting completely independently for the entire course of the last two movie. If anything it’s a miracle that the entire operation hasn’t collapsed under its own weight already.

Amrita is stupid, and I regret even making up an argument to defend it. But it does make sense in a “AI data centers in space” sort of way, where the point is not making a profit so much as it is keeping the suits invested in a project that is suddenly looking much riskier and more resource intensive than before.

NTA. Amrita is only stupid if you assume that the income distribution is as it is now. It's not unthinkable that in the XXII century, when pretty much all of Earth has been stripped off of most value (so almost all that's left is mining or going to space), the one last valuable thing is keeping youthful, and the wealthiest are willing to pay enough to keep the operation going with a hefty profit. So in essence: RDA is a profit-oriented, quasi-state gigacorporation that happens to assist humanity in colonizing a faraway moon, but their main drive is profit, not making sure as many humans as possible survive or thrive.

An AI overseer program, built to monitor, balance, and maintain Pandora (which was a lifeless rock until it was terraformed by the same aliens).

Everything worked fine for millennia, until humans showed up. The alien race who built "her" did not anticipate anyone so primitive and stupid as humans being able to get their asses to Pandora. Every known race sheds their violent tendencies before they figure out interstellar travel. Except humans. Eywa isn't sure what to do.

The issue for humanity in the past was about human factors, for example moving workforce and everything being dependent on raw manpower, then you also had to protect it with military etc.. It was a huge undertaking that required manpower for every single thing.
Realistically speaking humans on Pandora should be able to keep things going with robotics, AI and minimal amount of human presence.
This tech factor should enable for a continuous supply of materials being shipped to earth.
You can also make accurate calculations with AI about growth and predict the production needs in the future and scale the shipments accordingly.
I don't think that having a permanent presence on Pandora should be any kind of an issue.
The real problem is that humanity wasn't going hard genocide mode with the locals and tried a humanitarian approach instead.

An actual god of the planet and not a program or anything. I also think this is the last time we will actually see this form of eywa. What strikes me the most is Eywa is obviously focused on something else and she has an indifferent look in her eyes when being asked to help. Not that she doesn't care, she did send the planet to respond, but more that God has some pretty pressing matters to attend to on cosmic scales. She doesn't even turn her full face to her immaculate conception. She also has human eyes. I think that she could also possibly be the god of both Earth and Pandora, and the planets and guardians of said planets are more interconnected than we think.

They most probably felt they shouldn't have trippier visuals because they cut off the equivalent scene for jake in the first movie where it had a drugs induced vision of the eye of eywa in a ritual, and quaritch's journey has to be parallel to his

the eye tattooed on varang's palm is a parallel to that, but it just doesn't work the same without that deleted scene, also because quaritch has to miss the experience of seeing eywa and pandora as a whole while jake had that experience and tries to convince quaritch about it in this movie

Realistically there would be a mix of people from the American, Canadian, British and even Australian military being hired for Pandora. Rather than exclusively US Marines but Cameron wants to keep the plot America centric. Let's be honest, the plot would make more sence if Jake Sully was an Aussie soldier instead since aussies are known for being insane.
also Australia apparently doesn't have marine infantry for some reason, which surprised me since the Aussie militaryis based off the British and they are famous for their marines

It's extremely obvious that it's a caretaker program. It's focused on maintain the ecosystem for billions of organisms across a large moon. It specifically has defenses against anyone trying to access its higher level functions and will push them out or cause seizures. But if you can force your way in, you essentially gain control of the planet wide network to set it to your will.

a consciousness that arose out of the intricate neural network of flora and fauna on the planet, it aims to perpetuate itself and so its main focus is maintaining the balance of the ecosystems at the planetary scale.

It may or may not all hinge on a panspermic interstellar fungal organism that has become endosymbiotic with most complex lifeforms on pandora, if this is true then it's possible it has ways to propagate itself by producing spaceborne spores of some kind, and may or may not have done so before, meaning that there may be or have been other such consciousnesses that have risen on other planets full of life.

>>
prediction for movie 5: quaritch melds with eywa and drives pandora like a spaceship all the way to earth to kill all humans
>>
>>216792640
>ways to propagate itself by producing spaceborne spores of some kind
to continue on this, a relatively easy way to reach escape velocity is to ride volcanic eruptions, if that's viable then it's possible that eywa strategically arranges its spores that are meant to go spaceborne over volcanically active sites, and/or even have ways to cause said volcanic activity with a measure of will, the ultramagnetic material of pandora may be used to interact with and manipulate the tectonic and volcanic activity by touching the geomagnetism of the core of the world
another method may involve riding the extremely potent magnetic vortexes seen in the 3rd movie, which may or may not reach the outer atmosphere
in any case the growth of massive/important trees undoubtedly related to eywa over rich deposits of extremely magnetic materials is way too coincidental, and the rarity of the material, to the point it seems to exist exclusively on pandora makes it unlikely that a panspermic organism might rely on natural formations of it

yes, my theory is that the magic roots synthesise the unobtanium, and that varang's hometree was destroyed by eywa in an eruption she caused to shoot her seed into outer space

>to shoot her seed into outer space
to continue on this, spreading biological material may not be the exclusive aim of the eywa-panspermic-superorganism, it is shown amassing information from the creatures connected to it, and it is shown having dogmas helpful in its continued existence and the balance of the ecosystem which are most definitely codified from past experiences, and if it has way to carry genetic matter to another world, it may have ways to carry information from another world

one possibility is that it codified its dogmas on pandora from the ground up, learning and fixing whatever problem the more intelligent creatures it met, interacted and interfaced with, but it's also possible it's carrying these dogmas from previous worlds, meaning it might have interacted with very similar intelligent creatures elsewhere

we are used to the idea that the universe might create eerily close and even compatible alien humanoids not just once but multiple times due to our cultural background of space operas and the deep desire to encounter blue space boobs, but it's a statistical absurdity in a setup like these movies where even the most out there element is vaguely rationalised and made scientifically sound at a distance

what I'm saying is that eywa genetically engineers humanoids as helpful hands in maintaining its gardens, and as decentralised brains to elaborate experiences and information, which she then gathers compresses and ships together with the spaceborne seed

one ramification is that if someone in the story was able to dig deeper and deeper into eywa's consciousness it might find information and experiences or even the uploaded minds of aliens from other worlds

and that earth's humanoids were also engineered by a spaceborne seed, but at some point earth lost its magical fungi, leaving humans without directions from their creator, morally balancing element and ancestors

Supposedly the role was going to be played by a man previously but the actors turned Cameron down. I really wish he had found someone with as much presence and military bearing as Stephen Lang to pull off playing another grizzled tough commander. She was terrible, and I wanted to like her. She did almost nothing in the first movie, then just talked shit in this one but was constantly humiliated since no one in the movie took her orders seriously. Quaritch didn't, Garvis didn't, she was a laughingstock. The General deserved a huge climactic fight like how Quaritch went out in the first movie.

Saw the Imax 3D yesterday, I've heard of post Avatar depression, but I have the opposite of that. I feel alive for the first time in years.

I'm going to go do something with my my life so I can watch Avatar 4 with a smile.
>>
>>216793788
I had a pretty bad post-Avatar depression, back in 2010. I started taking short walks outside to "clear my head". Over the weeks, those walks became longer and longer, and my weight started to drop. When I noticed the weight loss, I started to change my eating habits too.

I was a 132-kilo blob in January 2010. In June 2010, my weight had dropped to 100 kilos. In June 2011 I was 72 kilos and I could walk 30 kilometers.

I can't walk 30 kilometers anymore (I can just barely reach 18 kilometers), but I haven't gained all that fat back (I'm currently around 79 kilos).

So yeah, Avatar *can* change one's life.

There’s a 0% chance Pandora is a naturally occurring biosphere or even subject to the rules of evolution in the first place. Apex predators don’t just evolve the ability to get brainjacked by cat-apes so that they can be taken on a joyride or blown up by a helicopter or some shit. If Eywa is as hard-scifi as the rest of the setting, then it’s the caretaker of some insanely advanced alien species’ luxury resort/nature preserve.

spider shows that the queues can grow onto a preexisting animal, which means that most of the biosphere might have evolved normally and then hijacked by the neural symbiont, which eventually became endosymbiotic

so the evolution of the normal animals is plausible even if still conveniently familiar, it's just the na'vi themselves that would need to be designed for the thing to make sense
>>
Anyone else think the movie moved too fast? There were all these artificial jump cuts like there were important scenes cut out. Extended confirmed?

That's unironically the ultimate point, it all goes back to that: Cameron doing avatar exclusively because he got a hard on for a blue girl during some acid trip/dream in college. The audience and the protagonist needing to empathise with the aliens (which means wanting to fuck them), and the story requiring a convenient reason for the conflicts to end and for the similarities to be explained (and discovering that humans and na'vi share a creator does it).

Has there ever been a plausible reason why RDA do not simply start to breed tulkun in captivity and give them lumbar punctures for amrita? Not only that but ground animals are just way too easy to kill. You just machine gun them, artillery them, or lay down mines. All the horses and such got mowed down in the first one easily. They needed big rhinos with thick hides to do anything. The whales were only safe due to water and the depth charges being nerfed.

that's literally how real life works without environmental laws. We almost hunted real whales to extinction until laws were passed. We hunted other species to extinction. We cut down forests until we passed laws protecting them. We were overharvesting fish, lobster, etc.

I'd say he's reserving its presentation to act as a visual parallel to whatever infodump they have to do in the 4th or 5th movie about eywa being in a similarly symbiotic relations with the rest of the planet, which has now merely been introduced in passing, but not truly been hammered properly

Even if Quaritch "dies" in his current Avatar body, can't they just take this memory tube and drop it into a new Avatar and boom back to normal? I assume they would also have a new memory tube with his up to date memories too, so they can choose what Windows System Restore point they want to make new Quaritch start at.

I highly doubt they drop a tube into an Avatar and its gone forever. They make copies and backups of all this memory tube "data" right? Nobody can really "die" every again, their memories just keep getting reloaded into new bodies forever into the end of time.

cameron doesn't even make a science babble cope about it being some super complex organic compound man can't just make "...because ok!" or the yields being so low that killing whales and sending their goop 6 years back to earth is somehow faster.

And yet knowing spider has a mushroom in him will mean next movie humans don't need masks. One only hopes that the whales being mean now means humans just make immortality goop in a lab and we never have to see the PS2 ocean again.
>>
>>216797354
They'd never reload Quaritch since he's a traitor and failure now. And while they can keep making clones, it doesn't benefit you. You lose the coin toss every time. They can, but I think that at this point the humans don't really value Quaritch anymore. Those Avatars are expensive (that's why they brought in Jake in the first movie), so if Quaritch was already borderline rogue and insubordinate in this movie, they would just move on and find somebody else to invest in.

Also it would be bad for the plot because when would they have done the most recent memory backup? He wouldn't remember the last battle and saving Spider and probably a lot before that too. From a story-writing standpoint it would undo a lot of the development.
>>
>>216797440
I kind of felt the same in this and the 2nd movie with all the guys dying from drowning. I mean I know they're bad guys but still. There were scenes where the Navi just broke the glass on a sub and left the guys to drown.

4 and any future movie needs to lean hard into "RoE prevented us before, now we're going to not be retarded on purpose"
It's as big a plothole as anything that they're still using 20 year old now technology that the naavi are fully capable of destroying. The blueniggers can still win, it just has to not be dumb. Like in this one it'd have been perfectly fine to just have had the ~800 total people with half of them be civilian whalers face down 10,000+ naavi (like the explicit stated stakes of the first movie which didn't have this problem as badly) and have their big ships point defense guns run dry from shooting so many out of the air just for the remaining 6000 to swarm the deck. The ash tribe evening the odds as a screening force for the technology to keep on killin still makes them useful. Mechanically everything story wise still can happen, you can still deus ex aewa the 10 boat fishing fleet away, but the visuals/action on screen can be made believable to anyone with an IQ above 90 at the same time.

Most of this movie was written and produced almost a decade ago, so it's safe to assume any more recent "story leaks," which don't match the real thing we got, were bullshit larping.
I liked the one which ends with the humans winning and declaring independence from Earth, setting up a future scenario where different factions of humans are fighting each other over who gets to claim Pandora. Could have been better than what we got which ends abruptly and gives us little to no idea of the new status quo and how much fight the humans at Bridgehead City have left in them

>>
<blatantly reposting from another thread>
If the humans want the aliens to side with them why don’t they just show them like, air conditioning and refrigerators and shit? Why bother trying to fight when you could literally just improve their quality of life to the point they would be begging you to occupy them? They have cloning immortality technology, and post-modern medicine. Do you know how many of these paleozoic fucks would shit themselves over canned food that can last over a year?
>>
>>216798734
>little to no idea of the new status quo and how much fight the humans at Bridgehead City have left in them
Movie magic of changing the scale of the viewed narrative. Humans are fine, naavi are not, whales got to live.

The reality of the situation
>Bridgehead has a 2mile DMZ that around it protected by auto cannons controlled by AI that their fishing fleet conspicuously lacked, completely unassailable without ID tags or in a total lockdown. All life is extinguished around it regularly so no aewa ex machina can occur
>Population in the low Ten thousands based on size and crowds/lorefluff
>Total human deaths of battle at the most like six hundred; the big boat evacuated multiple lifeboats and the small ships we know from the previous movie have a crew of like 70 counting all hands and fastboat crew.
>Previous big naavi war party of the first movie numbered several thousand warriors, 10k+ possible if I remember the dialogue about the sat images correctly, so we can assumd similar or even more numbers with the additional tribes
>This one got fucking decemated

Cameron focuses on the whales living, the aewa zerg destroying the Japanese fishing fleet, and quaritch and Jake fistfighting. If they had cutaway to company man at bridgehead go "nonononowaitwaitwait this is going to cost me so much money daddy on the board isn't going to like this" it'd be undercutting to the idea personal survival was a victory in and of itself.

Makes me really want to see the headcanon where RDA are less retarded and take Grace's research seriously. I bet the whole approach to the planet if they realize that they are dealing with a planet-wide sentient parasitoid organism that is capable of radically altering the physiology of any of its hosts (case in point - Spider or Grace) or mobilizing them en masse for self-preservation, the approach would be different. Maybe starting with oh-shit-oh-fuck targeted WMD deployment, and proceeding to bio-mechanical installations that tap into the trees and roots with synthetic kurus and keep praying to Eywa to not go crazy.

Cameron half measured that by making bridgehead destroy all life to keep aewa from being able to warg into it anywhere near the human base. They're fully aware aewa "exists" and keeps sending plants and animals after them, they just don't do anything further about it. After this one if the next movie doesn't open up with them orbitally bombarding world trees to push back the planet hivemind off their continent the setting is just reduced to cartoon logic.

Kiri grows to fully embrace her powers as Eywa's avatar and ends the conflict in Pandora. RDA collapses but some humans can stay there peacefully, being given the ability to breathe and live there. Finally, Eywa sends back a way for earth to be saved and restored.

There are already several humans who defected from the RDA, they appear more than once in this film, but most would stay in line. People in real life also know that whales and dolphins are some of the most intelligent animal species, that doesn't stop countries like China from scraping up the entire ocean floor and emptying it of all life.
