This but unironically. Critics were calling it an all-time masterpiece for the first few years after release, then it faded from the the public consciousness and you see far more people now calling it corny. Residual effects from the diminishing returns of Malick's subsequent output retroactively making viewers less appreciative of his earlier works?

I unironically think Cannes retards pretend to be prudes and acutally don't give a fuck, but want to create a fake image of "having principles" around themselves.
But also, to be fair, Under the Sun of Satan is not better than Wings of Desire, and Wings didn't even get the Grand Prix, but rather the directing prize. Grand Prix went to a Georgian movie Repentance which is pretty great and I would definitely recommend it. But that year was quite weak overall actually. The mentioned movies, The Belly of an Architect, Yeelen and that's basically it for the competition, the rest is unremarkable on the first glance at least, maybe there's some hidden gem in there.
Un Certain Regard had Epidemic (underrated early Trier) and Blind Chance (which really should've been in comp). Radio Days, Raising Arizona and The Whales of August were also out of competition for not much reason, I guess they wanted more new faces in comp, but none of those new people managed to make a mark.
Hilariously, Tough Men Don't Dance had a Cannes premiere that year.
Dead Man's Letters was in Internation Critic's Week, John Sayles had Matewan in Director's Fortnight and Aki Kaurismaki also was in there with Shadows in Paradise.
Alltogether that's 12 films of note and 1 meme movie from the entire festival, poor display, quite poor.

I'm tired of boomers here watching it ever year. It's a decent film, although overlong, same goes for Office Romance. Ryazanov's Carnival Night was mentioned in the previous thread and I actually like that film a bit more for the soulful 50s naivety. Ryazanov made was incredible film during the Perestroyka tho, it's called Promised Heaven and it is essentialy a Miracle in Milan remake with a slight Kusturica feel to it, great, great stuff.
>>
Continuing about 1987 Cannes, the Best Actress prize went to Barbara Hershey in Shy People by Andrei Konchalovsky and Best Actor went to Marcello Mastroianni in Dark Eyes....by Konchalovsky's brother Nikita Mikhalkov. I think that's amusing.

I have no idea but the movie feels unfinished, yet at the same time I don't know how would you finish it without reshooting most of it. The modern day black & white scenes are basically incompetent, it's like ralphthemoviemaker made them or something, it's just poor acting, poor visuals, poor sound design, looks like a YouTube video with a black & white filter or something. The most hilarious performance is the Jason Momoa one. It's like he came straight from a Tommy Wiseau movie.
But what's most baffling is that the flashbacks in-colour to actual Dante are day & night filmmaking wise compared to modern day scenes, it's like two different people made them. If you just compile those into a movie it would be a decent one.

Fellini would say sheltered lives are way worse than lives of suffering. A Garden of Eden situation if you'd like; what's the point of living life like you were gonna die suddenly, at any moment? The privileged mind, -which is mostly euro and anglo-, can't comprehend true danger, so it escapes into a puerile fantasy through several ways of avoidance (anime, alcohol, masturbation) to never have to look itself in the mirror and realize that it indeed, has wasted its life doing nothing of interest.

the /mu/ treatment is different. /mu/ is openly hostile towards its former tastes and elevates trash both as punishment and catharsis. filmfags, especially those who loiter around the fringes of entry level arthouse cinema, have a predilection for elevating certain specific trash because it's _their_ trash and they need its consecration within some imaginary arthouse film canon to validate their taste.

Fullerbro, have you watched this?
>In 1993, Sam Fuller takes Jim Jarmusch on a trip into Brazil's Mato Grosso, up the River Araguaia to the village of Santa Isabel Do Morro, where 40 years before, Zanuck had sent Fuller to scout a location and write a script for a movie based on a tigrero, a jaguar hunter.
>>
>>216894684
Saw it on youtube in like 2008, it's mostly Fuller interviewing the injuns and Jarmusch hanging around if i remember correctly. It's a fun little doc.

Will give it a watch, eventually.
Watched Merrill's Marauders. One of my least favorite so far but still a great war film and very recommendable. Centered around the physical and psychological deterioration of a volunteer battalion in the Burma campaign. The source material is a book by an excombatant so the grittiness gets an edge... like in many of Fuller films, you can sense that what's shown to you comes from a real, living memory and experience. Oh and the on-location (Philippines, not Burma) technicolor and cinemascope photography is astounding.

That's one of the ones i haven't seen. Another great film about the Burma campaign is Objective, Burma! by Walsh, it's the most matter of fact war film i've seen, it's an operation to be executed and that's it, there aren't even any women in the film, it's quite interesting.

This.

I just did, too. 7.5/10: soundtrack was bad and some aspects of the direction and general aesthetic approach felt Netflix-like, -and Elle Fanning was not up to the standard of the rest of the cast-, but all in all, it was a solid movie.

The final scene is a perfectly bittersweet send-off to the movement. Much better than Heaven's Gate to end the movement on.
