I'm guessing that if a plurb was inside a huge microwave to block the radio waves then it wouldn't be able to get updates from outside and might actually develop its own personality given enough time because it would only be using that brain. But then once it was out of the microwave it would update back to the brain average of the hive mind. In fact this somehow seems to be what happened to Zosia when Carol was spending time with her despite how Zosia was around the other plurbs. Tbh I think this show looks like sci-fi but it's more like "future fantasy" i.e., the "science" part is magic. So there isn't a way to really reason about it because the rules aren't defined and they're whatever the writers want them to be to keep things interesting regardless of consistency.

The survivors being flawed characters and having differing approaches to the situation is also very realistic, but it doesn't really help the future of the show. In a realistic scenario, the survivors worldwide would be in the thousands, but they made them so few in order to sell the idea that humanity as a whole is weak and imperfect. But there need to be more characters in general, cause I can't see the plot moving forward without some characters escaping the hivemind or the hivemind fragmenting. I also don't think they should draw it out past perhaps 3 seasons.
