The body-snatcher/blob plot could have been chilling if they allowed it to be, but even that was undercut by the flayed having all been paper thin caricatures even before they were possessed (the newspaper writers in particular were so cartoonishly chauvinist I knew they were doomed immediately) and it all quickly terminates in a giant goo spider anyway. Almost everything in season 3 is goofy. I enjoyed the mall scenes with Eleven and Max, but a mall is out of place for what is supposed to be a small town and the story doesn't do much with it anyway aside from establishing it for a fun setpiece. Season 3 gets weirder the more you think about it.

Anyway, the idea isn't that it's real but that it could be. None of the scenarios really work. The Duffs have said she couldn't have pulled Mike into the void because of the sonic weapon, but who's to say she was in range. After all, she was completely incapacitated and screaming in pain when it was used before. There is no way she'd have been able to get back into the gate without them knowing, so maybe she ran elsewhere. The consistency in the show is terrible. There is no way she'd just be standing there when the wind is so strong it's collapsing buildings and ripping trees out the ground. I don't think she was there at all.
