I had watched the first season like a decade ago but never stuck with it.
So for season 5 I literally marathoned the entire show all at once over the month of December (I technically finished 2 days ago).

S1 >>>>> S2 >>> S3 > S5 > S4

My understanding is the zoomies love season 4? It has to have been a Covid thing just like how so many people convinced themselves CoD Warzone wasn't slop. Season 4 is so fucking slow and pointless for most of its run. It splits the cast up into several different locations far away from each other and each subplot DRAGS like crazy. The California plot was bad. The Russia plot was... somehow even worse. The Vecna stuff *is* interesting, but it's hard to ignore how much of an obvious retcon it all is, and when he starts monologuing about his incel life even that plot loses a lot of steam. They also expanded the cast way too much and felt like they needed to give huge exposition dump "moments" to everyone.
Season 5 by contrast is just very stupid, but it at least didn't bore me as much as 4, and I do think they got the finale mostly right even if they had really written themselves into a corner to some extent.
Really, the show should have just been a seasonal anthology like it was supposed to be.

Season 4 was when the show had a cultural revival of sorts so a lot of people, especially gen z, liked being a part of that. Lots of Vecna and Kate Bush tik tok content.
But yes on rewatch it's actually pretty bad and it's all because of the pacing.
