4 is most definitely happening. idk why everyone is acting like it wont. Disney needs to cover the losses sustained by greenlighting shitty movies for like 5 years. Avatar is a free billion dollars every time.
>>
>>217241858
If FAA's budget was $600m after marketing though (very possible), then it needs $1.2b or some obscene amount to break even. The investment in the theme park may convince them to keep the series going.

I feel like we've stopped on the most interesting. I fucking need that 4 movie brehs.
>>
>>217242045
I actually do not care about payakan and the tulkuns. I barely cared in Way of Water
>>
>>217241858
No way Cameron does 4 without also doing 5 at the same time imo. I think his main thing right now is trying to settle on some methods that will help get the movies made cheaper (tbqh im sure they cost even more than is reported) without too much compromise. I think it's also safe to say that advances made with 2 and 3 and their pipelines and workflow might already be something that pay dividends regarding the sequels budget.
>>
>>217242359
I read somewhere that there will be a time jump at some point in 4 and they already filmed the scenes that come before that before the kids aged out. Do not know if it is true though.
>>
>>217242448
8 years, which should give you an idea of approximately when he expects them to come out.
>>
>>217242359
I wish Disney would just abandon Star Wars and redirect all the money to him. It'd be more profitable for them too.
>>
>>217242448
It is true, Cameron confirmed he filmed a chunk of 4 already several times
>>
>>217242448
It is true I think. It's been in many articles back when TWoW was released.
Kids part of the story was completely filmed, which what i assume would make up most of the first act of the movie. I guess we will have first 15-30 mins to transition from FaA to whatever post skip events would be, and the rest of the movie+5 will be with grown up characters.
>>
>>217242517
yeah this shit is coming out lol expect the announcement late january-early february
>>
>>217242565
I hope they will announce it when it hits 1.5 billies.
The main question is whether Cameron himself feels satisfied with the drop in box office or not. Maybe it's ego thing + rationality. I can understand him if he will feel like such a box office isn't worth of spending the next 4+ years on making these movies.
On other hand we have an overall profit. TWoW and FaA were shot together and approximately cost $800 millions+250-300 millions spent on combined promotion.
2.3+1.2 billies are 3.5 billies of box office vs 1.1 Billie of the budget.
I think by the end of the run it would be 3.8-3.9 vs 1.1.
But at the same time drop from 2.3b of TWoW to 1.6-1.8 of FaA may look painful for Jimbo.
But on other hand it's really hard to expect TWoW results with just 4 years of gap vs 14 years between first and second movies. TWoW also absolutely had some people fed up with the setting, so it's kind of natural way of things.
It's quite complicated.
I'm thinking the fate of 4 and 5 will depend on whether 4 and 5 are magnum opus for Jimbo or he just wanted to show us ocean movies in TWoW and FaA and was satisfied completely with that and is ready to move on.
>>
>>217242775
Cameron said he is unsure about directing 4 and 5. Maybe someone else will do it while he stays as the producer.
>>
>>217242832
I dont believe anyone else has the technical knowhow or merit to make these movies as they are but him
>>
>>217242775
>4 and 5 are magnum opus for Jimbo
apparently disney thinks the script for 4 is really fucking good
>>
>>217242045
>spider x Kiri
What do you see in that couple?
>>
>>217241833
Based jimbo. Give me max tulkun exposure!
>>
>>217243047
They are both hot and I'm real sucker for vanilla romance in fiction.
Also I like both characters. Spider's personality is basic but not annoying and Kiri is just a treasure.
>>
I don't know if I can say I "hate" Spider, I just feel like he's very underutilized and is practically just a comic relief character.
Like you'd think with the whole Tarzan thing he's got going on, the movies would explore him being a total Na'viboo yet not one, the whole torn between two worlds thing causing conflict.

But nah, he has no conflicting feelings about it, he's pure Na'vi loving all the way, he immediately gives up any interest in his own mother because he remembers she was a filthy Sky Person who tried to kill his beloved blue people.
Not to mention how in Way of Water Neytiri was going to fucking murder him, but he's okay with her the next, then Jake going to execute him, but immediately forgives him, its just off how disconnected he is.
>>
>>217242832
he passing 4 and 5 off to james wan

the spin off is being directed by a newcomer, which he wrote the script himself and was wowed by cameron
>>
>>217243347
He is more of a classic chad character, from the movies of 80s and 90s. He knew nothing other life than with Navi and RDA are clearly evil on his eyes. So he understood why Neytiro wanted to trade his life for the life of Kiri, and also understood why Jake wanted to execute him.
But I got what you mean, his arc supposed to be more dramatic than it actually was in the movies.
>>
>>217243347
Very good point, actually. The most interesting part of AWoW was when he was watching Neytiri massacre humans with this horrified expression on his face. That paired with him saving Quaritch really made me think he was going to be way more interesting than he ended up being in FaA. I just do not think he belongs with the Na'vi. It would be more interesting if he was of his own mind, distinct from that of the military, but separate from the Na'vi because of breached trust and a conflict within him that compels him to empathize with humanity.

Spider could have been a vessel for very powerful emotions. Does he truly wish to be Na'Vi, or is he just envious of their size and strength? What does humanity mean to him? Does he wish to see humanity be better? Better how? Morally? Physically? After both Jake and Neytiri tried to kill him, would he go his own way and try to help his people? Would that put him at odds with Lo'ak, Kiri, and the Na'vi down the line? People complain about him being a plot device, and the easiest way to fix this is to develop that dichotomy within him.
>>
>>217243347
That's because the movies actually skipped some important stories written by Cameron. That's why Spider looks like he got shoehorned in the movie. Cameron should've made 1 or 2 Avatar movies in 2010s instead of obsessing with mastering underwater CGI.
>>
Every time I play Frontiers of Pandora for a bit, I see something that makes me smile.

>>
>>217243592
Maybe he doesn't belong with the Navi, but at this point he's Pandoran, not an Earth human. Returning to Earth would be extremely difficult for him without major physical adjustments to the heavier gravity. He's a more interesting concept than he is a character

Many years ago I think Cameron said the sequels would explore the other moons. That's obviously been abandoned but I wonder what they would've been like.
>>
>>217244054
Frankly, I'm not a big fan of Cameron-producer. Idk in what capacities he was involved in all projects but none of them were that good.
Terminator movies he was involved in as producer were garbage.
Alita I never get that obsession with continuation. It was forgettable movie with jarring CGI.
Cameron is a great director and script writer (he wrote Strange Days and Point Break for example).
But I wouldn't trust him as a producer with another director at helm. He is way too competent to waste himself on just a producing.
>>
>>217244232
there were too many missing beats that couldve made the movie a lot more meaningful

alita is a selfish brat who had no remorse whatsoever after destroying the robot body given to her by ido,who originally built for his daughter

as soon as alita is given a second chance by ido, she becomes a whore by immediately falling in love with the first retard she sees, and also going to bars to pick fighs with random robots just to prove that shes superior

and i know the alita models were built to fight, but to not take in any ounce of humanity ido showed her was such a wasted opportunity in having a walking circuit board rewire itself to understand how fragile life really is
>>
>>217244045
>It's a pretty well optimized game
that's the opposite of what I've heard
>>
>>217244318
same anon

theres nothing wrong on the technical side of things

its just that the story itself was lacking any sort of humanity

all it was, was robots killing each other

>>217244352
NTA but it's highly unoptimized and meant for high vram modern gpu's. If you got anything but that, it's gonna struggle and run around 30-45 FPS - maybe 60 if you gimp yourself to 1080p (DLSS) and lower settings, defeating the purpose of the visual porn that's the game.
>>
alita is a robot whos only purpose is to fight

it doesnt understand what love is

it doesnt understand what father and daughter relationship is like

it doesnt understand what it means to be a human

alita must learn all of this in order for her to resonate any sort of connection to the people around her

also, she didnt even question why she had this urge to fight all the time...

idk, it just felt like alita couldve been more than just an action movie

it couldve been a robot understanding love can be greater than what a human perceives it as

I'd pay handsomely for an R-rated horror film titled "Pinkskin". At nightfall, Neytiri sneaks up on a massive ship full of human tourists that are there to see the bioluminescent beauty of the Pandoran waters. Neytiri kills all the guards and the panicking tourists themselves get indiscriminately slaughtered by her in an unchecked killing spree. Spider is the protagonist.

Real conflict with Recom Quaritch was underutilized (e.g. real dismay at him jumping, dropping the brave face facade after he leaves the med room to the camera, or genuinely considering Recom offer to go full blue so he wouldn't need the mask— then cut to RDA CEO eavesdropping so we question Quaritch's motives). No one believes Sully could go through with it— but Spider seeing Neytiri's real despair at pushing Sully to do it (and attempted mask murder), too late to stop him - or so it seems rushing into the jungle after them - AND/OR Spider offering to do it himself (let him jump, so he can see the sky) being the thing that kills Sully's resolve, that would be better than that cruelky drawn out bullshit.

>>217243592
The most interesting thing that can happen to Spider is getting unlucky in combat with giant blue nephilim cannibals, and taking his 'father's offer to Pinocchio his crippled pinkass into a new blue recom body (which dries Kiri's surface snatch, much to Spider's dismay).
>>
>>217243955
>>217243966
He'll do some significant betrayal. Humans (Sully & Spider) are trouble, and he's written off victory over Sky tech, perhaps diverting gun runs to the Ashies and letting slip intel to Quaritch & an RDA going full British East India Company with parralel force structure vs. the Military. Han Solo face turn in Empire, then showing up in ROTJ at Laser Moon 2 against expectation.

Biblical Imaginery

-"Eywa" = "Yahweh", a simple reversal of the abrahmic sky daddy god.
-The character name "Grace Augustine" is fully loaded with christianity. "Grace" is a specific theological state where you get right with god. Augustine was a theologian and saint.
-In the third movie, one of the Ash people pokes Quaritch in his obliques with a spear, drawing a bit of blood. This is like the Lance of Longinus for Evangelion fans, or: the holy spear.
-Varang's tight little horizontal binder is sometimes worn with a vertical stripe of paint or paints, clearly forming a cross.
-The third film specifically makes general appeals to faith and belief, especially the opening argument between Jake and Ney (and Jake really ought to know better, since he lived the proof of his god at the climax of the first film).
-In the first film, when the much larger Neytiri cradles Jake's weak human body, this pose is taken directly from the Pieta (mary cradles the dead jesus). The Michelangelo sculpture is the best known example, but it's a genre thing with other instances.
-"Tulkun". The sound of this word is suspiciously close to the jewish theological concept of "tikkun". In rough strokes, the jewish/kabbalastic notion of tikkun is: the world is broken and wrong, and various troublesome things in the world (qlippoth) obstruct our clear view of reality. Therefore, we should endeavor to repair the broken world that we inhabit.
-Kiri is obviously a Jesus figure, being born without a father, as an avatar(lol) of god.
-And then there's the Abraham and Isaac moment with Spider.
-And then of course, the Na'vi are waging jihad against the occupying humans. You can stretch it any way you like, but the abrahamist stuff is a major informer.

Spider is not just a MacGuffin, he's a "morality pet" for three principal characters: Jake, Neytiri and Recom Quaritch, he's there to show the audience that there's a certain line that Jake and Neytiri wouldn't ever cross and that Navitch is not an irredeamable monster. Imo, his relationship with Neyney is the best-written one. Not only did he save Jake's life by putting himself in danger, I think something also clicked for her when he was sleeping on her back while flying, something like "Holy shit, he really is just a boy who's earning for a family, and for mother's love. And I've been such a horrible cunt to him for nothing". Like Catelyn Stark and Jon Snow, except in this one "Caitlyn" actually realizes it before it's to late to apologize.
>>
>>217243347
As someone pointed out a while, like his dad and probably his mom Spider is just kind of a based Chad who is loyal to home and hearth above all whose way of dealing with complicated shit is to just not think about it and double down. It's strange, I didn't think much about him in the last movie but I actually really liked Spider in this one purely because the stakes are higher, the family was dealing with more shit, there was overall more danger-and he just fucking doesn't care, and still finds reasons to be a cheeky little fuck.

There's something admirable about what a based retard Spider is when Sully and Neytari's arc seems to be slowly learning that one (1) glorious battle isn't enough to win the war.

Jake has known that from day 1, that's why he's so blackpilled. That said the RDA seems like the kind of organization that would implode in opportunistic infighting when faced with significant set backs
>>
>>217247445
>Jake has known that from day 1, that's why he's so blackpilled.
I would argue that Jake was still a little in denial, in the sense that he thought he could run away from the main war and win with guerilla tactics when all the movies seem to agree that only an Eywa zerg rush can defeat the RDA.

Though yeah, it's fair to say to say Jake's arc is different from Neytari's and really all the other pro-Eywa Na'vi who think that Toruk Makto can just fix everything merely by existing.

>Neytiri's mom is pretty much treated as the clan leader after her husband's death
>Ronal is at least an equal to her husband
>Varang's mom seemed to have a pretty tight hold on the clan even before Varang started mindraping them into submission since nobody seems to give a fuck about who the chief supposed to be, and Varang only bothered to bypass her sister not any other authority to take over the clan
>Etuwa is the one to take the initiative about getting her dad to lead the clan to war
>Anufi straight up WAS the leader as well as the Tsahik
I don't know man, whatever the formal line of succession is with Na'vi clans they don't seem to have a problem with a woman occupying multiple roles as long as she's both fierce and spiritual enough to do them both. And not in a liberal way, the boys roughhouse and hunt and shit, it's just that they don't mind outsourcing the big decisions to a woman
>>
>>217247581
>>217247546
Pretty sure na'vi are not a matriarchy. They have a male chief which leads the clan and deals with the more military and management problems. The chiefs wife is more a spiritual leader akin to a druid. Her position requires her to be well versed in the ways of medicine and have a deep connection with Eywa.
Also if Varang and Quaritch remain a couple the ash tribe might get a new male chief. I think the only reason they lacked one was because Varang wanted to consolidate power and didn't consider any of her simps worthy of the position.

>>
>>217247663
Several willful misinterpretations. Na'vi generally have a split male/female leadership with the male/female having their own yin/yang spheres of authority. That has nothing to do with a matriarchy.
>>
I always found it weird that na'vi practice arranged marriages for their leaders. Like if those two don't get along they can't mate to begin with. Even weirder that Neytiri was forced to take her sisters role despite not actually being particularly thrilled at being a tsahik.

>>
>>217247675
>>217247734
I don't think they are a formal marriachy per se, it just seems to me there is a natural tendency for the Tsahik to easily consolidate leadership due to the fatality rate of chiefs (who tend to fight on the front lines, like most Na'vi) and the authority/general people and practical skills that come with being a spiritual leader, just to be clear. Yeah nominally there is a chief and a Tsahik, all I mean is that the latter seem to also be able to occupy both roles in a pinch just fine while we haven't seen a male Tashik yet to my knowledge
>>
>>217247014
It's actually even more blatant when you think more about it:

I think Varang was also keeping the boys in line with the idea that the most worthy would get the position of chief. It would work as a great motivator. Wukula( ash nav'vi bad guy in FoP dlc) seems super salty towards Quaritch so I think a lot of them were hoping for his position.
>>

>Also if Varang and Quaritch remain a couple the ash tribe might get a new male chief. I think the only reason they lacked one was because Varang wanted to consolidate power and didn't consider any of her simps worthy of the position.
Judging by how well Quaritch's pitch worked on her, pretty sure Varang was frustratedly shlicking herself alone in the spooky tent every night because she knew fucking someone from her clan would risk lowering her status by tacitly conferring authority to someone else.

Either that or it genuinely never occurred to her she was lonely at the top and it came as a shock.

Maybe it becomes more apparent (sticking out like a tail) by evolutionary pressure (mated animals have a superior intelligence guiding them so they should win over the ones who don't in fighting for resources and territory), but since it's a murderous devilshark that swims in the deep barely any attempts are made to connect with it because it's just so risky, so it only developed a small inlet. Same deal with the squids, I didn't see a neural jack anywhere on them.

Well, the squids still heeded the call of Eywa. I'm just saying, if even Toruk and the Thanator could evolve neuraljacks despite only one of them having a clan prophecy, I'm not sure we can count out the devilshark.

I can see Eywa just building neuraljacks into all it's pets just in case it ever needs a sapient lifeform to guide one for better combat performance.

I was wondering if the absolute pacifism of the tulkun is only so in their perception. They have to feed themselves and do so by killing other beings that however are microscopic, so they probably aren't aware of their existence because, no matter how smart they are, they haven't developed microscopes, understandable since they inhabit the water, a hard environment to get things done, and humanity lived with no such invention or anything close to that level of technological sophistication for hundreds of thousands of years, until 100 or so years ago. So they think they're just living off of water, clueless to their filter-feeding of millions of living beings every individual instance. The breaking of these news to them would probably mindbreak them hard and upend their beliefs so abruptly they'd be back to murdering each other in 2 weeks.

But water is a lot harder for a four limbed being to move nimbly in. And there aren't settlements out in the middle of the ocean (that we know of, waterworld x avatar when??), so there wouldn't be that much proximity leading to a beneficial, somwhat fair relation developing between species. I can see them trying to on ilu/skimwing but that just seems overboard when these can already do most of what the shark can.

Not that anon, but the neurolink seems to be a very basal part of the body plan of pandorean animals. Meaning all those different animals have inherited it from a single ancestor in the very deep past. Just like three pairs of limbs and two pairs of eyes. Those traits did not evolve independently a hundred times.

EXCEPT if Eywa is an alian parasite that has invaded pandora and mutated its species to develop a kuru, just like it did with Spider.

Doesn't technically need to be alien really, just a really fucking adaptive fungal/plant network that dominates every other organism in the ecosystem. Like the Zerg or Lavos, but less expansionist. Spider was created by Cameron to fulfill the thematic role of showing that humanity is not inherently tainted and doesn't have to atone for the original sin of not being a na'vi. He's supposed to be a self-insert for the audience; not everyone can be Jake and be lucky enough to get an avatar, but we can all be Spider. We (humans) can join the People fully even if we're not blue, because the soul is what matters.

I do agree with what you guys are saying, though. He's not a very interesting personality. Quaritch telling him about his real mom and Spider asking for the dog tag was a well done scene only to be completely undone 4 minutes later. Spider being affected by what Quaritch told him would be interesting to see. He doesn't have to betray the na'vi because of it, but it would be interesting to see him at least struggle with some of it.

I always knew but it just occurred to me that Spider's nakedness is fully CGIed.
What a quality, I rolled with him being naked from the very beginning for how realistic and natural it looked.

Spider is a teenager who was born and raised on Pandora, I don't think there's much conflict in him being a physically human beyond his daddy issues. I wouldn't be surprised if he's actually more fluent in Na'vi than in English
>>

Yeah I never actually thought it was cgi. That’s insane

Sylwanin was probably much more suited to be the tsahik, but when she died the scrambled for a replacement and figured Neytiri was the next best thing and Mo'at could teach her to make up for the difference. Interestingly Neytiri is still considered a trainee tsahik even after moving to the metkayina, even if she's clearly much better at fighting and not actually interested in being a shaman.

I don't think the critics are completely fair to the kid, he's playing pretend with nobody to bounce off and his acting is being compared to the juggernauts like Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang and Oona Chaplin. He's not Marlon Brando or young Al Pacino, not at all, but I'm sure he's trying his best

Some scenes are CGI but for others he literally had to act naked with some dummies that are stand ins for the characters. Probably why his delivery is weaker at times.

He sells a kid his age in that environment very well. It's an extrovert kid keeping in touch with two families, he's playful but you can tell it's also a coping mechanism. I assume most people giving him shit have long grown out of teendom and don't bother looking back to realize how they were seen by their elders, as energetic goofballs.

I feel like they cucked Tonowari in this one. Him backing down to the kids was weak, and everyone I know who's seen the movie has commented on him letting his 9 month pregnant wife fight in the battle. Both of those could have been handled differently imo

Tonowari does advise her to not go into battle in Way of Water. She tells him to fuck off. She was determined to get killed fighting for some reason. I feel like that sort of "No man can tell me what to do!" and "I'm still a bad ass even when heavily pregnant!" feminism wasn't in the first movie as much. The women would still do what the Chief said and treated his word as law.
>>
>>217250390
Tsireya is the best candidate for a normal navi wife though
>>

Eh, Grace has to force Jake to feed his human body in the first movie. But just something to show he's neglecting it more than not shaving would be interesting.

Kudos to Jimbo for not pussying out and making Ronal actually suffer the consequences of her retarded actions. Tonowari should've just found his balls in her pouch and tied her up

I am of the opinion that all navi would shit themselves (especially neytiri) if they found out just how barbaric humans were throughout history even when they were also banging rocks together to make tools
I guess by now navi have a general understanding that humans are violent and industrious but they don't actually know the full extent of how far back human savagery and ferocity goes, even if they themselves have 12 million years of stagnant history being passed down through oral tradition

It's odd because it's really just that one character: Neytiri makes a point of refusing to contradict Jake in public, like the guy above said Tsireya is quite meek, Kiri is not physically imposing and would be pretty helpless without her powers, Varang has a great dynamic with Quaritch.

Then you have this girlboss stronk queen who gets herself shot by charging into battle with her baby about to arrive.

>>
>>217250634
Yeah, but Na'vi typically kill each other out of rivalry and tribal scuffles.
We have archeological evidence (among historical accounts) that early humans killed each other for seemingly no reason besides pointless disagreements, practiced cannibalism even when food was not scarce and built entire religions and industries out of organized slaughter.
It's like if you found out your slightly assholish but otherwise approachable and normal neighbor idolized the Manson murders, defended the Holodomor and was a hardcore Khmeraboo behind closed doors.
