>>217836460leaning towards savage hunt of king stakh>tfw half the time it takes me longer to decide on the film than actually watching the film
>>217836521>"The Savage Hunt of King Stakh" is a 1979 Belarusian film directed by Valeriy Rubinchik, based on the 1964 novel "King Stakh's Wild Hunt" by Uladzimir Karatkievich. The story follows a young ethnographer, Andrej Bielarecki, as he explores regional folk legends in a haunted castle, dealing with themes of curses and the supernatural.Sounds interesting.
>>217836422>Are you the guy who's only gone through 5 so far? Well, seven now, but yes. I'm watching other stuff too you know, not just silents.
So, the 4 hour cut of Greed or the theatrical release as it were in 1924?
>>217836840The 4 hour cut is full of stills from scenes that couldn't be saved. If you don't find it jarring, watch it. Otherwise, just watch the theatrical release first.
>First working cut, by Stroheim, was seen by Harry Carr (journalist, war correspondent and co-author of the director's subsequent The Wedding March) who testified that Greed was 45 reels long and lasted from 10:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., a total of 9.5 hours.Good lord, it was originally longer than Satantango…
>>217836913>is full of stills from scenes that couldn't be savedIt's kind of bullshit that they do this, if they couldn't be saved, they couldn't be saved. Stroheim didn't want you to look at photographs followed by intertitles.

>>217839513To use ffmpeg on windows, download ffmpeg (google it), extract the zip anywhere on your computer, edit "Environmental variables" (press windows key and type that in, windows 10+ will suggest it for you, if in doubt google how to change it) and add the recently extracted ffmpeg FOLDER to the path variable (in the window below, find the PATH, click it, click "edit", in the new popup click "Browse", find the extracted folder), go to the folder where the move you wish to webm is (using the file explorer) and shift+rightclick for the menu and and find "Open powershell here", use the command below, do note the filenames. If you want to just take a scene use the -ss (start time) and then -t (clip length) commands.ffmpeg -ss 00:13:37 -i INFILE.mp4 -t 00:00:40 -c:v libvpx -crf 10 -b:v 1M -c:a libvorbis OUTFILE.webm^ That command will convert 40 sec of the movie "INFILE.mp4", with a bitrate of 1M (1 Megabit/sec or 1000 Kb/sec) in 1280x720, to the output file "OUTPUT.webm" https://www.devicemag.com/run-bash-script-windows/

>>217812795I watched it today.I've been reading comments from other people who found the ending satisfying, but I found it sickening all around, didn't come off as cathartic or anything. The credits are a joke.
its weird watching classics and being reminded of mortality and immortality in such a casual way just for the fact that these people are all dead now, but i see them right in front of my screen, living and talking, preserved in a window into the past. truly a magical experience. the closest we will get to actual time travel. arent films great?

>>217841166Me on the right :)
>>217841651i would describe the story and the movies more like a fairytale and not horror, but you can still watch it in october i would say.
>>217841330I ended up writing more thoughts on it to a personal friend of mine, these are disorganized and rambly, but I'd like to hear what /film/ thinks about Dogville in general. High chances that I completely misinterpreted the movie, that tends to happen with me.It wants to tell you humankind is just da worst without any actual moral framework to go by. Issues of temptation, dishonesty, evil and morality as much as they're thrown around are used in very shallow and flippant ways. The ending credits are a fucking joke and kinda prove that any extension to the pretentions of an arthouse filmmaker a viewer must be willing to give was not used well, and ultimately wasted on an overcooked pseudo-political statement. Felt very browbeating and stupid. It's still a good film, I suppose.I guess my problem is that a movie with this concept that's better (or maybe just more to my tastes) would've taken to properly exploring the psychology of the people doing the evil actions and tried to pry even if just a little into their downfall into abuse. Instead the movie assumes (and directly states) that all people are just ready to be evil and selfish and works its way backwards to try and prove it. And maybe it IS true that we're all evil by default, it's not that I disagree (or agree) with the so proudfully misanthropic premise, but I'm always skeptical of any piece of art that tries to tell you something without giving its own thoughts even a bit of doubt or leeway, it coats everything with artificiality and self-indulgence, mainly if it's as SUPER SERIOUS as something like this.

>If you live in France and you have written one good book, or painted one good picture, or directed one outstanding film, 50 years ago, and nothing ever since, you are still recognized as an artist and honored accordingly ... In Hollywood - in Hollywood, you're as good as your last picture. If you didn't have one in production in the last three months, you're forgotten, no matter what you have achieved ere this. It is that terrific, unfortunately necessary, egotism in the makeup of the people who make the cinema, it is the continuous endeavor for recognition, that continuous struggle for survival and supremacy, among the newcomers, that relegates the old-timers to the ashcan.

I remember when I used to watch three films a day. My life is so much better ever since I’ve switched to about 30 films a year. Each film is a like witnessing a miracle. I appreciate films more than ever now. I am changed. I am better now! Three films a day is like a desperate cry for help! You need Jesus unironically.

Can someone recommend me a movie? I’m going through a heartbreak that I never want to get over. I want to be faithful to this person for the rest of my life, even though they hate me and literally want me dead.
