Eat at a local restaurant tonight. Get the cream sauce. Have a cold pint at 4 o’clock in a mostly empty bar. Go somewhere you’ve never been. Listen to someone you think may have nothing in common with you. Order the steak rare. Eat an oyster. Have a Negroni. Have two. Be open to a world where you may not understand or agree with the person next to you, but have a drink with them anyways. Eat slowly. Tip your server. Check in on your friends. Check in on yourself. Enjoy the ride.

It's hard to take these old prison dramas seriously when they portray all the inmates as real stand-up guys who never did no wrong, and all the prison guards and the warden as complete psychos who just get off on torturing people for the sake of it. They'd be more effective if they came clean about the fact that most inmates, the vast majority, are actually bad people, and that inbetween the cracks are a few good guys who got railroaded. When they pull this kind of shit though, it undermines their premise.
Maybe things were different in the 30s, but I doubt it was this different.

The Hays Code didn't really do anything to stop this theme. It stuck around basically forever, only the genre naturally got less popular over time. Probably, again, due to how much bullshit it involved to maintain the narrative.
The core principal of this kind of film, the underdog story, is good in theory. In practice, you can do it a few times and wow an audience that doesn't think too hard, but eventually people go "wait, huh? the guy that robbed me at gunpoint and raped my wife was supposed to be the good guy all along?" and they walk out of the theater.
I've walked out of the theater, so to speak.

No one seems to be talking about musicals, so I'll do it.

I really like hello dolly! and streisand was very good in it. I don't imagine /tv/ would know this but the original play starred carol channing, who has that very trademarked throaty voice, so the first song of the movie, "just leave everything to me" was actually entirely redone. The original song was Channing's very iconic "I put my hand in", which became very synonymous to her voice. In order to save Streisand from doing a bad Carol Channing impression, they remade it to suit streisand's smooth vocals. She also changes the character, making dolly younger (which she was) but also less clever old lady and more clever jewess, twisting and turning the NY accent of dolly into a more jewish inflection.

Other issues is how streisand, despite doing one of the most charming and likable leads ever written, is affectionate to the viewer, but cold towards the other characters, the number in the OP, the titular Hello Dolly song shows this remarkably, she seems to barely stand the dancers around her and almost shows scorn to the Louis Armstrong cameo.

All that said, her renditions of the solos, just leave everything to me, before the parade and so long dearie are all powerhouse renditions which by far improve on the broadway versions.

Holy shit, bros, she was tiny. Anyway, cute little film, it's funny how many stories about orphans there were in the 19th century and early 20th. Terrible circus/carnival organ as a soundtrack though.

When a shit movie from the west gets a cult following it's still recognized as shit, even with all the cringey jokes and references the community creates. Wehn a shit japanese movie gets a cult following you terminally online folk delude themselves into thinking 'awwwww it's actually charming' meanwhile the movie is one of the ugliest, tasteless, gawdiest, most obnoxious movies in existence.
