Red Sorghum (1988)After discovering that I really like Gong Li as an actress I decided to give her and Zhang Yimou's filmography a go.A Chinese film with the color "red" in the title is bound to have some propaganda in it, and this is no exception. But the story is good regardless, small in scale but large in emotional impact. The fate of a peasant girl sold as a bride to a leprous outsider who happens to make the titular Red Sorghum wine is connected to the simple but joyful community of his laborers. But rural life has challenges both within and without, as tragedy is always around the corner.7/10

First Techiné. He seems like a decent metteur-en-scène here. The film is a very turbulent psychological drama, and in the moments of emotional excess there's an ambivalence between the emotion(s) that is trying to be transmitted and how it lands... For example, when Paulot confronts Trintignant... there's this cathartic stream of thought from Paulot, he attained some attributes from Quentin, and the part that was most striking and inspired me to quote this as an example is when he screams madly, that pain... it really felt like work of art, but a choppy one. Almost laughable. Binoche is excellent, she gives it all in her performance.

Chalamet seems to be shot from behind most of the time with the camera looking where he's looking, but he still gives a good performance. >>217911026I went to the article this is supposedly sourced from and Khondji didn't say anything like this in it. This is some retard on Wikipedia completely misinterpreting what the cinematographer was actually saying. The actual quote from the review>Then we talked about images of the ’50s and how to do it. We wanted to go back to what we love, shooting with the old anamorphic style—very classic anamorphic style with old lenses. And we mostly shot with very long lenses––more than even in Uncut Gems. At the screening yesterday, it was incredible seeing how he stuck to that. We stuck to that all the time. We’re literally right in the face. The story is told by faces. What he is saying here is that "how do we capture the 50s setting, that is recognizable as the 50s, while sticking to the usual Safdie ultra-closeup style". Not "how do we recreate the 50s movie visuals".

In a cinema like the silent one, with no apparent soundtrack, the shot acquires its maximum significance. It is not enough to know how to plan, or to know how to move the actors in the frame, or even to know how to match the movements of the camera with the external and internal actions, whether a door that opens, or the sudden thought of one of the actors. You have to know how to interrelate, look for the same visual idea twice and stylize it in order to make universal what at first seems particular.
Great filmmakers are those who, starting from a very simple idea, manage to explain the world through the synthesis of their images. That is why we are so impressed by the staircase sequence of Battleship Potemkin, with that frenetic use of editing, going from the particular to the general, from the most harmless to the most violent, not to mention the eye section of An Andalusian Dog, not so much because of the number of shots, minimal in comparison, but because of the wise interrelation between eye and moon, blade and cloud, what is touched and what is not touched, so close but so distant. We can accompany the images with a musical background, but it really doesn't hurt. Accompanying these images on the piano is effective in terms of rhythmic regulation, but it does not contribute anything, everything at most disperses the viewer's attention. The shot, once the film has been seen, is drastically reduced, even more so in these times in which it has lost all its meaning, no longer because it is brief or poorly planned, but simply because it is cumulative and unconnected. We will have read Kafka for the first time, and when we finish reading it we will hardly be able to remember any sentence, but the deep and ineffable meaning of the experience is in us, it remains. A silent film remains in the viewer through its images, but not in its shots, of whose limits he cannot be absolutely aware once the projection is over. Here arises the great problem, much studied, of the negation by forgetfulness of the unity of the plane. With all its limitations, the human brain (and the restless viewer) cannot be satisfied with a first, a second or even a tenth viewing.
I do mute silent films when i feel the music isn't right, i will say though that if i'm watching at night and do that it's very hard to stay awake with the absolute silence.

>Insipid melodrama. There's one scene where the chick who gets molested bends down and you can see her cleavage, and that's it. This movie was so boring I accidentally threw something at my TV and destroyed it. I cannot believe this slop managed to brainwash Germans into being antisemitic, in both the sense that this is terrible and the Krauts are a shifty, thuggish lot. I hate this both because this movie is shit and it killed my TV-why are people pretending this is some kind of insidious masterpiece that will instantly warp fragile little minds into murderers??? It's just bad and it killed my TV and Germans are sickos- read "Germany Must Perish!" for more.https://letterboxd.com/dingoatemybabi/film/suss-the-jew/

II. APPROACH TO MIZOGUCHI'S MISE-EN-SCÈNEa) Composition of the shot: Of pictorial inspiration, however, it does not fall into the easy temptation of aesthetics. The composition of the shot attends to a dramatic purpose, always enhanced by the situation of actors and objects in the shot.b) Actors: Their interpretive correctness is new in Japan (it will be difficult to find, outside the cinema of the greats, of course, performances worthy of the name), given the characteristic nullity of its actors (starting with the modulation of the voice, which accentuates the typical facial gymnastics of the typical Japanese actor, tic after tic). Apart from any pseudo-dramatic excess, Mizoguchi, like Bresson, manages to make the actor (or model) bare his soul by limiting himself to reading the text.c) Objects: If there is one thing that characterizes Mizoguchi's best cinema, it is the absence of close-ups (which he openly loathed) in favor of the sequence shot without cuts. Objects, therefore, will rarely appear highlighted, forming part of the composition (tending towards abstraction, that is, the reduction to basic objects as meaningful).
d) Lighting: Without strong contrasts, leaning towards a naturalism that is not at all obvious. The great work of the crew with whom Mizoguchi worked was decisive (in the face of the large number of bad actors, it is appropriate to highlight the large number of notable cinematographers) in creating the desired atmosphere. The lighting in Mizoguchi, unlike in Kurosawa, does not intend to capture or enhance a state of violence that will end up exploding, on the contrary, it is limited to accentuating the anguish without subjecting it to any tension, something not only relaxing, simply reassuring and therefore consistent with the serenity with which his characters assume what many call "destiny".e) Camera movements: Minimal and barely noticeable. Their function is not conventional (that is, follow-up), since, above all, they are there to "talk" without the use of dialogue. Mizoguchi's cinematographic system, integrative, uses them according to a dual logic, so that a movement to the right ends up closing in the sequence with another to the left, thus returning to the starting point (especially in the interior spaces).f) Artistic direction: Imperceptible, purely well integrated into the composition. Nothing will be superficial or gratuitous, seeking to nuance the space by contrasting in the same plane, for example, two different backgrounds (one dark, one light) that support the character, attending to their conflict.g) Soundtrack: Invaluable for apprehending the deep intentions of Mizoguchi, master of silence (it is not paradoxical, but the moments of greatest intensity in his cinema are those in which silence is the dominant entity of the soundtrack). The use of the musical score will follow a criterion of metaphysical research (the opposite of the cinematographic music of our time, descriptive and little more, purely flat).

Watched the aviator's wife yesterday, i think i only watch Rohmer movies as a coping mechanism because i'd like to fall in love some day, i feel they're mostly just boring. I really liked Claire's Knee, that one was genuinely good.
