It’s like lowest-common-denominator writing. If you reset the universe you don’t actually have to worry about keeping the interesting plot points you inherited from the previous, more talented writers
>>
Was “bringing back” Spock in SNW the hackiest move of them all? Was this supposed to make viewer numbers explode up with interest? Or is it just a humiliation ritual to stand over you, hands on hips, and prove they control your beloved franchise
>>
>>217892342
Wait I forgot it was even earlier, holy shit I have completely mentally blocked the entire retarded Michael Burnham shit. I hate these new writers so much it’s unreal
>>
>>217892342
It's weird that they'd try to borrow elements from TOS in a series that's clearly aimed at a younger audience which wouldn't be familiar with TOS. I think the nutrek writers/producers are just clueless and they don't know what to do, so they grasp at all the straws they can see. Kirk! Spock! Pike! Enterprise! Borg! Picard! Cram it all into the blender and make a star trek smoothie that smells familiar, but tastes wrong after you have a couple sips.

Such a hack move. Yeh. The way they started NuTrek with DISCO. And made the show's lead character be Spock's big sister. So bad. Clearly an attempt at fanservice by hacks who don't know what the fans want or like.
>>
>>217892398
I swear I’m turning in to a full blown masochist. We are so deep in the trenches now, at this point I’m just interested in how low we can actually go. There’s a part of me that has sort of developed a fondness for being an eternally punished fan. Like I see all these discussions on twitter about the mandalorian and other slop franchises, and then they’re like
>well at least we aren’t Star Trek fans
Like yup that’s me, we are the benchmark. We are rock bottom. It just keeps getting worse and at this point its kind of entertaining in and of itself

'fans are furious'

OBJECTIVELY FALSE

as explained in previous thread

YES! There were fans of TOS who disliked TNG. Some fans hated the fact that it features a new crew HOWEVER
The first season of TNG is widely considered a bad season of television, with plenty of real stinkers.
Season two was a clear improvement, but it was season three when TNG genuinely became good.

The main reason TNG survived its first two rough seasons, despite their overall quality, is precisely because the majority of Trek fans continued to support it. That support held even though there were TOS fanatics who disliked the new cast, the different tone, and the new era .

By contrast, NuTrek doesn’t have that same goodwill behind it - and its low ratings reflect that.

tl;dr some TOS fanatics disliked TNG, but majority of Trek fans supported it

Settle the debate once and for all.
Is the Federation actually socialist/communist or is it something else that cannot be pinned down to real world economics/political ideology?

The Federation is weird because individuals can "own" land and businesses, but they lack the monetary benefits that having such assets would bring, so they don't really meet the criteria of private property as we think of it in the real world. Money doesn't exist, except when trading with non-federation worlds, and citizens can engage in commerce. IP laws exist, but they seem to be more about providing credit and not plagiarizing other peoples work. Companies also exist, but again, don't make profit, so wether they meet the criteria of a private company is complicated. Also it seems that being moneyless is not a requirement for a world to join the Federation.

I think if you asked Gene he would say it doesn’t matter and isn’t something you think too hard about as it was simply the canvas, whereas the specific stories of kirk and spock and bones were the actual artwork you were supposed to focus on. He told the writers what he needed and they hand-waved the whole post-scarcity thing as much as they could every time it needed to be addressed. Now obviously that isn’t a fun answer and there is certainly fun in the sport of trying to discuss it & go beyond the basics and analyze how it could work/try to build up some head canon here.
Personally I think post-scarcity ≠ communism, it’s not that the means of production are controlled by the united earth government or the federation. I think it’s more just a case of extreme abundance, economic egalitarianism, and probably also lots of unspoken cultural taboos. Obviously social hierarchy still exists. Some will exceed more than others in starfleet for example, whether by being top of their class or because they come from an affluent family who happened to have members who exceeded before they were born and built up a reputation and inherited prime real estate and personal property through communal trading of goods or services outside of the government. But by and large I think the answer is that the world is some sort of “everybody gets universal high income” mixed with some sort of preventative-stage capitalism that either tactically avoids late-stage or outright just found a way to skirt around it with abundance. Simply calling it communism or socialism isn’t the right moniker, if that were the case everyone would be card-carrying and vindictive and corrupt

the whole point of worf as a character is that he talks big while in fact being a bigger fuckup than his worthless family. every time he opens his mouth to prate about honor it precedes incompetence and disaster.
>>
>>217901360
This is interesting. I always felt that it could not be socialist or communist because, as you point out, there's no "party" or any sort of ideological motive for why they are the way they are other than it works and it's egalitarian. There was no workers revolution or dictatorship of the proletariat, they just kind of arrived at that point naturally. They aren't capitalist, but they also aren't hostile to capitalism and permit their citizens to engage in capitalism and they trade with capitalist governments. I think you are right that the federation is merely a backdrop for our characters, it is vague on purpose and in a sense it is fluid. It's sort of a Rorschach test for the audience, what we learn about the UFP is just vague enough where you can kinda interpret it however you like, you could interpret it as a socialist society, a social-democracy, or something entirely different.

Yup and the whole thing breaks down, I think, once you start asking who actually makes the replicators and holodecks, why they are incentivized to make them if their motivation isn’t just profit into their bank account, what it would mean if they just stopped making them. Perhaps the easiest answer (that is a total cop-out) is that after the eugenics wars the Vulcans helped Earth to just unify into a central government and that there are magic replicator machines somewhere that can reciprocate its ow parts and make other replicators and that the energy input is something like the Back to the Future Mr. Fusion machine that takes trash and just spits out effectively unlimited energy or some shit. It all has to be trivialized. But then we run in to the problem of replicators not existing even by ENT so whatever.
This is currently Elon Musk’s pitching point. Whether you like him or not, his current explanation is that if you start trivializing energy production such as a huge low earth orbit solar constellation that can beam power down to earth or lots of nuclear reactors and you end up with dirt cheap energy you can then use a robot slave labor force to run the farms, drive the trucks, stock the grocery stores, give you a medical examination, perform the surgery on you. Essentially the cost of living in this idealized society would simply approach the lower and lower cost of electricity to run the machines. But this also does not solve our Star Trek problem because even as late as TNG they really only have Data and Lore and we don’t see any other robots anywhere (but they already have replicators and super smart computers by then at least)
>>
>>217901717
>you can then use a robot slave labor force to run the farms, drive the trucks, stock the grocery stores, give you a medical examination, perform the surgery on you
this will always be done by people, the people just get treated worse and worse over time

I always assumed a society as advanced as the federation must have heavy automation and advanced machines that can due all the complicated logistical work for them. I know there's that episode of TNG where they make those little drone things that develop sentience, but I always just assumed that they must have similar machines that already exist to some capacity.

Does class exist in the Federation? I feel like ownership is so fundamentally different in its content that the categories of bourgeois and proletarian are obsolete. Ownership in the Federation is totally devoid of any of the benefits that would come with owning a business or property in today's world, the only real gain you would receive from owning a bar or a publishing company would be recognition, you could probably make money if you do business with non-federation worlds but that wealth wouldn't really mean anything in the Federation.

Post-MATERIAL scarcity. There still is scarcity in who looks good in different colors. Falls are the proletariat because they only look good in browns. Springs and summers are the aristocracy and petit bourgeoisie respectively. We don't talk about winters.
>>
>>217901746
Musk’s argument is that the robots will be able to do anything a human can, from a dexterity point to view, and that the software could somehow be so good that the vehicles can do FSD, can be smart enough to give you an accurate medical diagnosis, can use opposable thumbs to do the surgery, etc. Of course he is hand waving AI just getting exponentially smarter and approaching some form of sentience. I see his point though. A society with smart enough computers and low enough costing energy could theoretically produce huge over-abundance, i.e. post-scarcity (at least for your everyday needs)
This also implies a company that operates in good faith and just blows a bunch of their own profit for the goodwill of humanity that makes a bunch of AI robots that give people shit for free. This is the most unbelievable part lol. He who controls the AI slave force will just want to find a way to profitise off of it and ask normies to pay up for the service all while not employing anyone
>>
>>217901837
Class doesn't exist because due to post-scarscity the bourgeoises can no longer make money off of surplus value and therefore they go defunct.
>>
>>217901895
Yes that too, my mistake for not mentioning that.
>>
>>217901837
Class just reflects energy budget. The Federation has social strata determining who gets to e.g. reignite brown dwarf stars, terraform planets, and negotiate policy with other powers. The Federation does not have impoverished classes who live without access to basic needs.

A story worth exploring (that I don’t trust modern writers to be able to handle well at all) would be how Starfleet / the Federation handles civil war away from earth. Those not fortunate enough to have abundance, who start to act up and present a threat. Sisko gave a good monologue about not everything being pretty and perfect away from earth. And PIC blew their load with that black bitch who lectured Picard about him being le privileged and others living in squalor (retard writers here). Idk maybe I’m just projecting bc I know Halo has civil war in its lore right before the covenant made them shift focus and I think that would be a cool setting worth exploring.

Telling someone they have too much and taking from them intrinsically requires an authoritarian class in and of itself. Your desire to erase hierarchy has now just spawned a card-carrying hierarchy

Nobody is forcing anyone to live on the fringes of colonized space so even when colonies have frustration with the distribution of resources, if worst came to worst they would just leave.

Okay, but if you are making money off of the value of an item instead of the labor required to produce said item, then it isn't capitalism. Did the plantations make money off of the cotton itself, or did they make money off the free labor? That is the whole crux of what Marx is getting at, and what divides serfs and slaves from the proletariat.

Please, anybody correct me if I am wrong about this.
