Season 1 is by and large tolerable, but season 2 gives latter day Game of Thrones a run for its money. Expect 45 minutes of circular conversations in poorly lit rooms intercut with scenes of Daemon being confused as to what show he's actually part of.

More to the point, the writers/showrunners were given a complete, if sparse story to adapt, and rather than just filling in the blanks intentionally left by the author (the entire conceit being that Fire and Blood is a maester's attempt to create a history of Targaryen rule based on fragmentary and often contradictory accounts dating back centuries), they elected to upend the actual, established narrative as well. They legitimately just could not help themselves from sticking their dick into the mix

It was bad enough that George himself - who tended to be fairly diplomatic all through Game of Thrones' run, mind - literally wrote a blog post bitching about what retards Ryan Condal and company are and that they've written themselves into about 50 different corners by fucking with fundamental, immutable parts of the story. He also more or less spoiled the ending of the show for show-only viewers, which is probably what got the post yanked from his blog within a couple of hours.

What was the purpose of the 20 min backstory? it didn't really do much to show us that Dunk is a dogged streetfighter that never gives up, he jumps on that guys back for a few seconds then gets speared and stares at his dying gf for 2 mins while Arlen fights to the death.

We would have been better served with a 10 minute backstory showing him and some bros doing antics around fleabottom, culminating in them all getting BTFO by gold cloaks with Dunk managing to kill them both himself somehow and Arlen admiring his spirit and taking him on as Squire, before resuming the main fight with extra time to show Applebowl, Targ brother fight and Lyonel and that one eye guy wrecking the kingsguard.
