It's fine, the two main characters have chemistry at least and the movie doesn't take itself seriously
Fungal zombies also act in a more interesting way since the fungus doesn't make them braindead llike the usual zombies
CGI was quite noticeable on pc screen though
But it also felt underwhelming, or maybe I was just expecting more, movie is very self contained to the storage facility but there's not that many zombies which is something I like in a zombie movie as in it actually spreading
It's worth a watch at least

>Smile 2 could have started with that mass scenario.
The 2nd movie exists to setup that potential scenario, without it there would've been no setup at all which is not good writing, you can't just go from a small scale scenario to a large scale one in the span of a single movie without previously establishing or at least hinting at the possibility of such a thing. There's nothing in the first movie that indicates it can possess more than one person at once since it's always just been one victim as far back as the chain goes since it's not an omnipotent force. However, seeing as how Skye Riley hallucinated far more than Rose Cotter did it can be reasonably assumed that it's gotten far stronger in the span of the year between the first and second movies, maybe it actually has the power to possess multiple people at once now.

Nta but that movie brings out all the annoying types of people
>>
>>218378964
There is no connection between the random couple in the second movie and the house in the previous films is my point since they were newly introduced characters and the movie makes no attempts at connecting them to the plot of any of the previous films or the house itself beyond some weird dimensional time jump by a girl who randomly walked into the house and then briefly ended up on the set of the actress MC so her fetus could become possessed. The Grudge movies are everything that you accuse the Smile movies of being which makes me question if you've even watched them at all. There is no logic to The Grudge, there is to Smile. The monster is not undefeatable in Smile, they are in The Grudge. Everything scary that happens in Ju-On is because "it's a horror movie so we need scary stuff to happen even if it makes no fucking sense!" unlike Smile.
> Smile has no rules since the demon has no weakness.
But they do in The Grudge right? You can actually defeat it.
> Where did it even come from
Why does it matter?
>why is it killing people?
> Its just an exsuse to do creepy effects until the finale.
If you actually bothered watching the movies it’s explained that the monster feeds off of trauma hence all the hallucinations so once it’s extracted everything it can from its host, it kills it so it can move onto its next victim exactly like some parasites would do in real life like for example the cordyceps fungus (I know it’s not quite the same but it’s similar behavior). It can only move from person to person in this very specific way ie. it needs its host to kill themselves in front of a witness that it can then transfer to and it can’t extract an endless amount of negative energy from a single person in perpetuity, that’s just common sense that resources are finite and they’re just regular humans not fantasy races or deities. Depending on the person it can take anywhere between 4 days to an entire week before they’re fully “drained”.

I can claim the demon is getting more desperate because it's getting weaker, it's dying. It has a time limit and needs to find the correct host. It can only find progressively more mentally frail people, so needs to keep escalating the death spectacles to find the single host it can move to, and under no circumstances can it enter multiple people.
Do I think this? No. That's the point, speaking authoritatively like headcanon is real triggers my ass.

What I think would be a COOL plot would be that the bigger the spectacle, the chance occurs that it has enough energy to breed. i.e. split, and we'd get multiple smile demons instead of just the same skinless one. Also perhaps it's not a demon, maybe it's a bioweapon.

There's at least a lot of opportunities, just because so far anything in the films could be in the characters heads.
I like the idea that it could be tormenting the hosts not because "it's evil" like in most films, but just to harvest energy. It needs a sexual like build up to an orgasmic possession. It seems born of nature, like it has a cycle and no real aim other than this kind of asexual feeding/reproduction.

I quite like that angle to it as well, which is part of why I think explaining it definitively would in part ruin it. If they simply conclude it's a force of nature they can't explain, that would satisfy. All they really need is a mechanistic understanding of it to the degree that it can be defeated.

>Smile 2 had an entire opening sequence with a non-Skye character set up her film. That could have ended with initiating a mass scenario and a totally fine film could be made out if it.
Did you miss the part where that one kid had already witnessed the murders Kyle Gallner committed thus already having been infected or how he deliberately only targeted two criminals alone in a dilapidated drug den that he was almost certain wouldn't get any backup? Even if it didn't take, the drug dealer who looked out the window while shooting at him was the only witness to his death except the person/persons who drove the car that killed him who may as well also have died in the crash for all we know. Again, there's absolutely nothing in the first movie that hints at a mass scale possession even being possible and simply starting the sequel with that right off the bat like you wanted wouldn't have been the right call.
>No offense but that's your headcanon
That may be, but without expository dialogue I can only speculate and interpret based on the other information the movies provide me with. Gallner finds out in the first film that the chain only goes back 20 people prior to Rose in the same chain, but we're also told there have been chains in the past even on different continents. We don't know how long these other chains have gone for or if it's actually just the same one but if Skye is in the same chain that Rose was in and it wasn't broken and the hallucinations are stronger than in the first movie then that's the only logical conclusion I can draw. But even in the chain in Brazil the possessed person only transferred it to a single other person just like in Rose's/Skye's chain and that's all we know for absolute certain.
>>
>>218382325
Neither, it's Cure (1997).
>>
>>218382325
The Ring is better on a first watch, and an excellent film with great cinematography.
The Grudge is better after multiple rewatches. Hard film to parse first time, and overall I think the series is better.
>>
>>218381726
>speaking authoritatively like headcanon is real triggers my ass.
That's because you're autistic so you're deliberately making a strawman you can attack rather than engaging with anything I said which makes sense in the context of what the movies have shown us so far, I'm not pretending to be an authority on anything I'm just trying to explain that your expectations are unreasonable and that you don't know how to progress a story organically because you're just desperate getting to the large scale spectacles at the expense of the narrative. We still don't know for certain if a mass possession event is even possible or not, but if it was why hasn't there been any before since it can't just be as simple as having more than one witness. So far everything points to the total opposite that its victims always makes sure to seek out just a single witness. Your expectations of Smile 2 starting with a mass possession and then getting disappointed when that wasn't what happened is the very definition of a headcanon brought about by you not paying attention to a simple movie.

There's no mystery anymore so the only way to progress without it being just a simple retread or doing mass scale possessions was to escalate the horrors of the hallucinations. Cure is not just a straight thriller I'm getting a little tired of people not understanding that it doesn't always have to be just one or the other. Kurosawa himself has said he considers it a horror film that he only made because he watched a lot of American horror films growing up and always wanted to make one himself and it is generally agreed by everyone to be a scary movie regardless of all this other stuff that our resident genre experts here thinks a horror movie needs to have in order to qualify.

From the man himself:
>During the fourth Qumra Masterclass, Kurosawa shared his journey through filmmaking through clips from some of his most well-known films. Speaking about the success of Cure, he said: “I watched a lot of American horror movies growing up, and I had wanted to make a movie in that genre for some years. Then the growth in popularity of genre films made it easier for me to get the project financed and produced. So, circumstance was the key factor to the success of Cure, and it has continued to play an important role in my career ever since.”
https://web.archive.org/web/20241009184638/http://dohafilminstitute.com/press/embrace-the-role-of-chance-in-filmmaking-says-qumra-master-kiyoshi-kurosawa

Also check out the 2023 documentary "The J-Horror Virus" on Shudder if you haven't already where Kurosawa also explains how he thinks Cure fits within the J-Horror canon alongside all the usual suspects.

Just like some say Henry is a horror movie even though it isn’t.
>>
>>218384545
Well I'm just giving them a heads up that Kairo is a straight down the middle horror film, and Cure isn't.
I probably liked Cure less because it didn't scratch the itch I expected it to. Whereas Cloud I went in knowing it wasn't gonna be a horror, but then was pleasantly surprised when it thematically was.

>I probably liked Cure less because it didn't scratch the itch I expected it to.
I think this is the crux of the matter ultimately and I've seen it happen time and time again. People associate horror with something very specific ie. the quantity of gore, jump scares, a certain level of violence etc. rather than simply if it's a scary movie or not and they're so used to all these movies being labeled just straight thrillers because that's how it used to be in the 80s-90s-2000s when they grew up and it's not until the 2010s and on when a significant portion of critics and audiences started accepting that maybe these movies can be both horror and thriller at once and maybe a horror movie doesn't always need gratuitous levels of violence and scares.

Some of these so called "psychological thrillers" are just like many famous movies within the broader horror canon from the 60s and 70s like Rosemary's Baby, Repulsion, Peeping Tom, Psycho, Don't Look Now, The Stepford Wives etc. or for non-psychological thrillers Jaws which literally made people stop going to the beaches out of fear, but because you don't fully see the shark until 2/3rds into the film that makes it not horror apparently. I think thriller/psychological thriller has been way overused for a long time to refer to scary movies that aren't horror movies because of all this stupid nonsense and it's something you can easily observe to be the case. Not saying every thriller is a horror mind you but whenever a movie blurs the line enough it probably is not just solely a thriller.

decent performances. liked the opening sequence, it had a couple "oh shit" moments.
visually disgusting. a fungal growth with some degree of intelligence to it that wasn't explored
ending felt rushed, had been cool if they'd gone in with a flame thrower torching the place as they went along but very little confrontation with the fungus happened save for some gross out stuff
had some potential but was ultimately disappointing, like an unexpected case of erectile dysfunction at an orgy
