>>218378893>Smile 2 could have started with that mass scenario. The 2nd movie exists to setup that potential scenario, without it there would've been no setup at all which is not good writing, you can't just go from a small scale scenario to a large scale one in the span of a single movie without previously establishing or at least hinting at the possibility of such a thing. There's nothing in the first movie that indicates it can possess more than one person at once since it's always just been one victim as far back as the chain goes since it's not an omnipotent force. However, seeing as how Skye Riley hallucinated far more than Rose Cotter did it can be reasonably assumed that it's gotten far stronger in the span of the year between the first and second movies, maybe it actually has the power to possess multiple people at once now.
>>218380672Nta but that movie brings out all the annoying types of people
>>218378964There is no connection between the random couple in the second movie and the house in the previous films is my point since they were newly introduced characters and the movie makes no attempts at connecting them to the plot of any of the previous films or the house itself beyond some weird dimensional time jump by a girl who randomly walked into the house and then briefly ended up on the set of the actress MC so her fetus could become possessed. The Grudge movies are everything that you accuse the Smile movies of being which makes me question if you've even watched them at all. There is no logic to The Grudge, there is to Smile. The monster is not undefeatable in Smile, they are in The Grudge. Everything scary that happens in Ju-On is because "it's a horror movie so we need scary stuff to happen even if it makes no fucking sense!" unlike Smile. > Smile has no rules since the demon has no weakness. But they do in The Grudge right? You can actually defeat it.> Where did it even come fromWhy does it matter?>why is it killing people? > Its just an exsuse to do creepy effects until the finale. If you actually bothered watching the movies it’s explained that the monster feeds off of trauma hence all the hallucinations so once it’s extracted everything it can from its host, it kills it so it can move onto its next victim exactly like some parasites would do in real life like for example the cordyceps fungus (I know it’s not quite the same but it’s similar behavior). It can only move from person to person in this very specific way ie. it needs its host to kill themselves in front of a witness that it can then transfer to and it can’t extract an endless amount of negative energy from a single person in perpetuity, that’s just common sense that resources are finite and they’re just regular humans not fantasy races or deities. Depending on the person it can take anywhere between 4 days to an entire week before they’re fully “drained”.

>>218380780Smile 2 had an entire opening sequence with a non-Skye character set up her film. That could have ended with initiating a mass scenario and a totally fine film could be made out if it.>it can be reasonably assumed that it's gotten far stronger No offense but that's your headcanon and I could just as easily claim it's getting weaker and more desperate and unable to possess people so searching out a larger audience to find a single severely traumatized person.
>>218381525Pretty spooky and well made movie>>218381500Read about it on Bloody Disgusting
>>218381528There was a clear escalation of the severity, scope, and scale of the hallucinations Skye Riley experienced compared to what Rose experienced. It may be his headcanon but there's definitely context to back it up.

>>218381600It is
>>218381657wrong
>>218381556I can claim the demon is getting more desperate because it's getting weaker, it's dying. It has a time limit and needs to find the correct host. It can only find progressively more mentally frail people, so needs to keep escalating the death spectacles to find the single host it can move to, and under no circumstances can it enter multiple people.Do I think this? No. That's the point, speaking authoritatively like headcanon is real triggers my ass. What I think would be a COOL plot would be that the bigger the spectacle, the chance occurs that it has enough energy to breed. i.e. split, and we'd get multiple smile demons instead of just the same skinless one. Also perhaps it's not a demon, maybe it's a bioweapon.
>>218381686See>>218380565
>>218381733See the end of a rope
>>218381726Part of me dreads the reveal of its origin because I think it will probably disappoint. It's always more fun when these things are left ambiguous. But at the same time, it would be fun to see some people try to put their heads together to figure it out when it turns into an outbreak.
>>218381584Ignore the jeet, it's not banned.
>>218380562Its slow burn, I recommend watching kinki instead.
>>218381770There's at least a lot of opportunities, just because so far anything in the films could be in the characters heads.I like the idea that it could be tormenting the hosts not because "it's evil" like in most films, but just to harvest energy. It needs a sexual like build up to an orgasmic possession. It seems born of nature, like it has a cycle and no real aim other than this kind of asexual feeding/reproduction.
>>218381817Cry abt it
>>218381584I saw Midsommar in theaters either three or four times. For whatever reason it really left an impression on me that summer. I've watched many better horror films since thenbut I still have a soft spot for it over Hereditary.

>>218381858I quite like that angle to it as well, which is part of why I think explaining it definitively would in part ruin it. If they simply conclude it's a force of nature they can't explain, that would satisfy. All they really need is a mechanistic understanding of it to the degree that it can be defeated.

>>218382157No, Gurpreet.
>>218382185Obviously it's not in the horror genre, but it *is* a horrifying story; at least to me. I think also for a film like pic related, you're supposed to be a bit horrified by it.
Which is better - The Ring or The Grudge? Either the originals or remakes.
>>218382288I think thrillers with horror elements are close enough to talk about here. Enough of us seem to like them. I have not seen either of those, though.

THOSE CATS WERE FAST AS LIGHTNIN. IN FACT IT WAS A LITTLE BIT FRIGHTNIN"
>>218382157not /hor/
>Koyaanisqatsi>horrorI can see how modernity would scare the backwater dalit, mmm yes.
>>218382325The Ring as a franchise is much better than The Grudge. This may be an unusual opinion, but I think the original The Ring is the best of all of them. It's even better than Ringu. It's one of my favorite horror movies ever.
>>218381528>Smile 2 had an entire opening sequence with a non-Skye character set up her film. That could have ended with initiating a mass scenario and a totally fine film could be made out if it.Did you miss the part where that one kid had already witnessed the murders Kyle Gallner committed thus already having been infected or how he deliberately only targeted two criminals alone in a dilapidated drug den that he was almost certain wouldn't get any backup? Even if it didn't take, the drug dealer who looked out the window while shooting at him was the only witness to his death except the person/persons who drove the car that killed him who may as well also have died in the crash for all we know. Again, there's absolutely nothing in the first movie that hints at a mass scale possession even being possible and simply starting the sequel with that right off the bat like you wanted wouldn't have been the right call.>No offense but that's your headcanonThat may be, but without expository dialogue I can only speculate and interpret based on the other information the movies provide me with. Gallner finds out in the first film that the chain only goes back 20 people prior to Rose in the same chain, but we're also told there have been chains in the past even on different continents. We don't know how long these other chains have gone for or if it's actually just the same one but if Skye is in the same chain that Rose was in and it wasn't broken and the hallucinations are stronger than in the first movie then that's the only logical conclusion I can draw. But even in the chain in Brazil the possessed person only transferred it to a single other person just like in Rose's/Skye's chain and that's all we know for absolute certain.
>>218382325Neither, it's Cure (1997).
>>218382325The Ring is better on a first watch, and an excellent film with great cinematography. The Grudge is better after multiple rewatches. Hard film to parse first time, and overall I think the series is better.
>>218381726>speaking authoritatively like headcanon is real triggers my ass. That's because you're autistic so you're deliberately making a strawman you can attack rather than engaging with anything I said which makes sense in the context of what the movies have shown us so far, I'm not pretending to be an authority on anything I'm just trying to explain that your expectations are unreasonable and that you don't know how to progress a story organically because you're just desperate getting to the large scale spectacles at the expense of the narrative. We still don't know for certain if a mass possession event is even possible or not, but if it was why hasn't there been any before since it can't just be as simple as having more than one witness. So far everything points to the total opposite that its victims always makes sure to seek out just a single witness. Your expectations of Smile 2 starting with a mass possession and then getting disappointed when that wasn't what happened is the very definition of a headcanon brought about by you not paying attention to a simple movie.
>>218382394im going to watch this, looks plausibly good.

>>218384051I didn't think he was meant to be a sympathetic character beyond a certain level. I thought that was the point of the movie.
Strangers pt 3 is pretty bad. We dont need so much backstory.
>>218384051>>218384071The movie is a surface level movie, don’t think too much about it. His wife was beheaded btw.
So pretty much only Strangers Part 2 is an actual movie. Part 1 and 3 are just pointless. Ai needs to wipe Hollywood out. Movie is cringe as hell with the kids.
>>218382338kek
Just finished Strangers Chapter 3. Total garbage. 1/10
>>218384230well damn
>>218384051now you can see the sequel
>>218384110>Hollywood is done for – you might not believe me, but this is AI generated
>>218384268So garbage. Part 2 was a solid 7. Part 1 was a 1/10 too though.
>>218384283I think I saw the first one when it came out but I don't remember it much. Haven't seen 2. I may watch all 3 over the next week.
>>218384273All it takes are good prompts to make a good ai movie. Prompter also obviously needs artistic skills and talent too.
>>218384273Imagine pasting a Stephen King novel into ai and telling it to make a movie. And maybe you can push the ai towards an Argento style movie for example.
>>218384308Waste of time. 1 & 2 are so bad.
>>218384308Watch this>>218382605
>>218384383I'm definitely going to after seeing the praise it's gotten here
This Joe Bob double feature has been pretty good tonight.Messiah of Evil and The Last Horror Film which is a cute final movie for the show.
>>218382605>2.9 on imdbimpressive
>>218384411>The Last Horror Film Never heard of this one. Thanks for the rec.
>>218384388I just finished it after it was recommended here. It actually gave off the Ring and Grudge vibes. Like that anon said, needed a better poster or title. Very solid film with comedy.
>>218384420now you'll set the jeet off ranting
>>218384423we love Joe Spinell kino
>>218384449Wow his discog is way more extensive than I thought... kino in Maniac.
>>218384461Uh, *filmog
>>218384430Sounds like something I'll enjoy
>>218384420Oh, your npc mind didn’t get the update?
>>218384505Fuck. I meant *without comedy**Its a very serious horror movie. I want to say more but it would spoil it.
>>218384528Are you the anon that always gives good recommendations but other anons say it is bad without watching? If so, thank you. You DO give good recommendations. Thanks and keep it up. You’re awesome.
>>218382446>>218382486Cure is not just a straight thriller I'm getting a little tired of people not understanding that it doesn't always have to be just one or the other. Kurosawa himself has said he considers it a horror film that he only made because he watched a lot of American horror films growing up and always wanted to make one himself and it is generally agreed by everyone to be a scary movie regardless of all this other stuff that our resident genre experts here thinks a horror movie needs to have in order to qualify. From the man himself: >During the fourth Qumra Masterclass, Kurosawa shared his journey through filmmaking through clips from some of his most well-known films. Speaking about the success of Cure, he said: “I watched a lot of American horror movies growing up, and I had wanted to make a movie in that genre for some years. Then the growth in popularity of genre films made it easier for me to get the project financed and produced. So, circumstance was the key factor to the success of Cure, and it has continued to play an important role in my career ever since.”https://web.archive.org/web/20241009184638/http://dohafilminstitute.com/press/embrace-the-role-of-chance-in-filmmaking-says-qumra-master-kiyoshi-kurosawaAlso check out the 2023 documentary "The J-Horror Virus" on Shudder if you haven't already where Kurosawa also explains how he thinks Cure fits within the J-Horror canon alongside all the usual suspects.
>>218384545Just like some say Henry is a horror movie even though it isn’t.
>>218384545Well I'm just giving them a heads up that Kairo is a straight down the middle horror film, and Cure isn't.I probably liked Cure less because it didn't scratch the itch I expected it to. Whereas Cloud I went in knowing it wasn't gonna be a horror, but then was pleasantly surprised when it thematically was.
bump
mmm, monke
For me it is dog soldiers, probably best were movie I saw.
>>218384761>I probably liked Cure less because it didn't scratch the itch I expected it to.I think this is the crux of the matter ultimately and I've seen it happen time and time again. People associate horror with something very specific ie. the quantity of gore, jump scares, a certain level of violence etc. rather than simply if it's a scary movie or not and they're so used to all these movies being labeled just straight thrillers because that's how it used to be in the 80s-90s-2000s when they grew up and it's not until the 2010s and on when a significant portion of critics and audiences started accepting that maybe these movies can be both horror and thriller at once and maybe a horror movie doesn't always need gratuitous levels of violence and scares. Some of these so called "psychological thrillers" are just like many famous movies within the broader horror canon from the 60s and 70s like Rosemary's Baby, Repulsion, Peeping Tom, Psycho, Don't Look Now, The Stepford Wives etc. or for non-psychological thrillers Jaws which literally made people stop going to the beaches out of fear, but because you don't fully see the shark until 2/3rds into the film that makes it not horror apparently. I think thriller/psychological thriller has been way overused for a long time to refer to scary movies that aren't horror movies because of all this stupid nonsense and it's something you can easily observe to be the case. Not saying every thriller is a horror mind you but whenever a movie blurs the line enough it probably is not just solely a thriller.
>>218385085
>>218384071>>218384094I actually liked the movie, but it does have a really insane “good guy”.
I'm starting to think Nightmare on Elm Street is never coming back

>>218385766Not with Robert Englund. But it's basically free money to make a new film, there will be one eventually.
>>218385784looked into this a bit and fan cut appears to be the directors cut except with the ending of the theatrical cut
>>218380879>redditors
>>218385796He recently said he'd like to do an animated series and honestly I think that'd be kino.
watching horror themed cartoons/tv. anyone have favs?
>>218385913For me, it's always been Disney's Legend of Sleepy Hollow

we're so back
>>218386825>>218386970What is it with the "bleh"? Nosferatu never said "bleh", nor did the Hammer Dracula. Is this an American thing? Bela Lugosi or something?
>>218381839Kinki was interesting. I think it would have been better if it entirely commited to the found footage/pov bit.
>>218387167bleh

>>218387167It's making fun of the way Lugosi says "blood.">Nosferatu never said "bleh",Nosferatu never said anything.
>>218387675>Nosferatu never said anything. The 1922 one had titles, the 1979 one did have actual lines.

Well I finally watched Scream 3, since a Pluto channel is showing them today.
>>218387992The last Lee Hammer kino before they started releasing "Dracula grooves out in the 70s" stinkers.Caroline Munro was hot af in AD 1972 though, so I'll give it a little bit of leeway.
>>218388058I just keep watching the Karnstein trilogy.
Going from Scream 3's natural lighting to Scream 4's dark and brown. Oh wait that's not the real movie. But it's still dark and brown. Oh wait that wasn't either. But it's still dark and brown.
>>218388094I watched that one three weeks ago I think. It wasn't so bad. At least it was not as bad as "The Satanic Rites of Dracula", which I believe was the last Hammer Dracula ever.
>>218388203There was The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires which only had Dracula as a small role and didn't star Christopher Lee. Cushing played Van Helsing though. Movie was a cross between KungFu and Hammer Horror. I only watched it one time about 15 years ago and didn't care for it at all.
>>218388300I very dimly remember a late 1970s vampire comedy with George Hamilton I think? Watched it only once and it was a long time ago. I remember him being in Harlem and flying as a bat into a black family's apartment. They were just having dinner and the dad screamed "GET THE CHICKEN!", and then they were all chasing the bat with knives and forks.
>>218388065What did you think?
>>218387972>>218388058Why are witches and vampettes so hot, bros? I've always had a soft spot for 'em.

>>218384051wasnt the idea that he wanted to torture him
>>218390559of course. watch some more Argento films, or Rosemary's Baby.
>>218390806thanks but I already watched it
>>218390476>>218390509Why shit up the general? I don’t get it.
had to choose between this and whistledecent performances. liked the opening sequence, it had a couple "oh shit" moments.visually disgusting. a fungal growth with some degree of intelligence to it that wasn't exploredending felt rushed, had been cool if they'd gone in with a flame thrower torching the place as they went along but very little confrontation with the fungus happened save for some gross out stuffhad some potential but was ultimately disappointing, like an unexpected case of erectile dysfunction at an orgy
>>218390171It's actually a lot better than I expected. I love classic gothic stuff. Also full of adult jokes, the first episode about a magic saxophone is called "No Sax Please, We're Egyptian!"
>>218390355
