I have a suspicion: George R. R. Martin is not actually the author of ASOIAF. The series was written by a ghostwriter instead. Something happened, perhaps a falling out over money, perhaps the writer died in a car crash, we just don't know. But the real author is out of the picture now, that's why grrm has been unable to write anything in 15 years.
George is waiting for AI to be good enough to finish the books for him, like how he used AI to make his 2025 illustrated edition and suffered zero consequence and even denied the artist's use of AI.

It's a really lucky coincidence that the Targaryean's family sword is named in Common, isn't it? I wonder why that is. Unless the High Valyrian for Black Fire is "Blackfyre". I thought sister/brother was Volonquar, but apparently not as Dark Sister is so called. I never thought about it, I wonder why their swords have such sinister (and Andal) names?

Does GRRM ever clarify what additional rights city dwellers have in Westeros? Correct me if I'm misremembering, but it seems like they're free from being levied, but that's basically it and a city is still under the total control of their lord.

funny how there was not a single trival of seven in asoiaf yet. There should be at least one, either Cersei or Jaime
>>218444654People have been thinking for a while Cersei will have to face one against the faith. Her deep voice booming.“I stole them from the kitchen.” She thrust her free hand into Sweetrobin’s unprotected face, pushing lemony fingers into his eyes.“Then I licked them.” Sansa slammed her fist into the sick boy’s mouth, making splinters of his teeth.“Then I smashed their fucking frosting in. Like this.” As she drew back her huge fist,The blood on her lemongrabbers seemed to smoke in the cold dawn air. There was a sickening crunch.Ser Lyn wailed in terror, and Bronze Yohn’s breakfast came boiling back up. If Sansa were smart, she'd immediately order the construction of a canal through the Neck at Moat Cailin. She could explain this as an economic development project to aid in trade between the North's west coast and Essos. But in reality it would also be a massive defense project to put up a barrier between her country and the south.
>>218445158Why do autists think the North has the ability to build a canal that long?>it would also be a massive defense project to put up a barrier between her country and the south. The North doesn't need a southern defense line. >>218445522Yeah, there was definitely a disconnect between the ending of s4 and the continuation in s5. Though Sansa gets to have that weird bathing scene with Ramsay's girlfriend. But I doubt the show would have killed Sansa off even if grrm told DnD so, she was just too important. Not just for the story as such, but for the irl fan and journo culture. >>218445488
>>218445706>I guess the writers were still waiting for Grrm to finish his shit, so they were unsure where to go between seasons.I don't recall GRRM having a public breakdown around that time over plot deviations so it seems like he was okay with Sansa going the Ramsay route as long as it led to her being kweeninnanorfAs other Anon points out, it doesn't sound like George knows where he is going with Sansa's character so maybe that's why he wouldn't care what they do with her.Honestly, most of GRRM's problems go away if he wrote the majority of his characters like Theon, letting them disappear for a long segment and then return in a different place later on with some mystery. His insistence on detailing every cog movement of every main character is why everything is so fucked now.

>>218446386I'll defend Tyrion chapters more than most of ADWD. It's some of the better non-Westeros worldbuilding in the series. I like the fantasy elements with the Royne being bigger than the Amazon, the ruins with the stone men, the magical turtle appearing for a brief moment. I think Aegon's crew are actually interesting as well, they all relate to the main Westeros plot (unlike 99% of people Dany interacts with) and there's the nice narrative theme of them all being fake in someway: the maester never earned his chain, the septa who should be celibate has clearly been pregnant etc. Turns to shit once he leaves Volantis though.

All the First Men houses had their names and symbols taken by the Andals for the most part, not too dissimilarly to Baratheon taking the Durrandon's drip (but not their name). The Lannisters, for example, aren't really the First Men Lannisters. An Andalchad Knight took the last Lannister for a wife and stole all their iconography.
>>218446861The demographics of westeros make no sense with regards to the seasons. I've said before that realistically the people of the North should all be fishers and reindeer herders. An agrarian society wouldn't survive these climate changes. The southern kingdoms should probably be nomads too.
>>218446966because the reach was first colonized by the first men? they first build dunstonbury off the mouth of the mander, which maybe the river itself was named after themI like to imagine that the Manderlys are descended from owen oakenshield, since owen oakenshield drove merlings and selkies back from the sea and took a merling king as sigil due to that>>218447013if you go by genetics if we consider the fact that the manderlys have probably married into several bannermen of the starks then they have probably gotten more and more first men genetics by the time of asoiaf
>Lannister >Casterly >Manderly>Fossoway These are NOT first men naming conventions. It’s gotta be like >>218446284 said, there were multiple migrations into Westeros before the andals, Garth’s wave was more advanced, migrating from some other pre established civilization, and then the second wave consisted of more primitive tribes of men, probably connected to the hairy men culture of Essos. These became the first men with short simple names like stark and mudd. And then of course you have the first men who came from across the sunset sea like the iron born and the Hightowers
>>218447279George changed his mind some time and decided that (nearly) all the houses were actually First Men houses and retconned them into First Men houses. Kind of like how there were supposed to be no Weirwoods below the neck and how the whole of the Seven Kingdoms (except the North) got taken over, including the Iron Islands for some stupid reason. Kind of like how the Targs were supposed to have married their siblings for generations, but as it turns out the practice had just been brought back and then had just left again.
>>218447279Fussing about with ASOIAF linguistics is retarded. Westeros is fucking huge and yet everyone speaks one language, even isolated villages and the guys seperated by a magical wall of ice.
>>218443370we still trying to pretend that western men resisting inbred schizos from the east that lost their homeland is a bad thing?
>>218447336> Kind of like how there were supposed to be no Weirwoods below the neck and how the whole of the Seven Kingdoms (except the North) got taken over, including the Iron Islands for some stupid reasonWhen was this changed?
>>218447279The appendix of GoT has the Lannisters as descendents of "andal adventurers". And Martin has used the Lannister name specifically in the past as an example of andal naming conventions. The first men on the other hand have short, speaking names like Stark, Strong, Reed, Mudd, etc. There was also a phenotypic difference, with andals having light hair and eye colour. But then Martin retconned all of this later and made the blond Lannisters first men. Thank god he did, otherwise we would have had a minimum of dynamic change over time.
>>218447378No idea. With Fire and Blood, maybe? I'm sure I remember and interview where he specifically went through names and said "names like Strong, Stark, Mudd" are First Men names then named a bunch of (now) First Men houses as "Andal names" but I can't find it.
>>218447279>Manderly>lived by the Mander>Casterly >lived by the Casterreal question here is what happened to the Caster river
As an aside, this is from the RPG (2005) and it has a little name list, and funnily enough all the Rhoynish names listed have since been retconned and are now Andal names. I actually think Dorne has more Andal houses than The Vale of Arryn now (probably because it isn't as explored).
>>218447339This is the most retarded aspect of his worldbuilding. Especially that even the wildlings beyond tne wall all speak andal/the common tongue. He didn't actually have to invent these languages like Tolkien. It would just all be english to us as the readers, and the Stark kids were all native andal speakers from their mom. >>218447378The weirwood thing gets retconned already within the first book. In the first Catelyn chapter she thinks about how there are no weirwoods south of the Neck, but then in the last Catelyn chapter of AGoT we learn that there's a weirwood in her childhood home of Rriverrun and that some Riverlanders still worship the old gods. It's one of many errors, contradictions and other weird "first-bookisms" of the earlier books. TWoIaF later tells us that Casterly Rock and High Garden also have weirwoods. TWoIaF also talks about first men vs. andal names (stark, mudd, etc.) but also narrates in detail how the Lanisters were always first men of this name and blond from the start.
>>218447622>The weirwood thing gets retconned already within the first book. In the first Catelyn chapter she thinks about how there are no weirwoods south of the NeckThis could've been a general statement/exaggeration, no?

Speaking about worldbuilding. I've bought The World of Ice and Fire, as I mentioned before, and have now read it over the course of about a week. As a quick review:When you hear people talk about TWoIaF it's mostly about the eldritch horrors or crazy stuff from the far east. But that's only a very, very minor part of the book. That stuff is mostly on the last few pages where apparently the co-authors had the most freedom to make their own shit up.Most of the book focuses on westeros, specifically the history of the Targaryens and the other big houses. If you've read the mainline books and hung out in fan communities you've already heard most of this info. It goes into a bit more detail though, for example we get a narrative about the recent Lannister history, including a Tywin biography and how he killed the Raynes. You can also clearly tell what regions grrm worked on more than the others. The chapter on the Iron Islands is weirdly long and detailed compared to the short one about the Stormlands for example. We do get some really interesting tidbits throughout the book though. For example on the "elder races", or on events and places we've never heard before in the mainline books. There's also clearly a maester bias in TWoIaF and you can try to guess at the "real" events in some places.Overall I rate it 8/10. Would recommend to buy a used copy.
>>218447871They do but it's VERY small. It might even be just some members of House Martel.

>>218447897>That stuff is mostly on the last few pages where apparently the co-authors had the most freedom to make their own shit up.The lovecraft stuff of the east is all George. >>218447943That's because Grrm is a shit worldbuilder. The text does mention that there are a lot of "fishing villages" and "market towns" all over the place however, so we probably have to imagine westeros as more densely settled than the maps suggest. But overall there's almost nothing about demographics, economy, subsistence, law, linguistics, etc. in the book. It's mostly a history of events with some flavour on the character of different regions. >>218447928Ok, thanks. I was only vaguely remembering some interviews.

King's Landingers are subhumans. All the scum of the Crownlands gathered there when it was still under construction, and the reign of Jahaerys expanded the city allowing more scum from the rest of the Seven Kingdoms and Essos to funnel in and create a filthy mongrel race of inhuman barbarians who will lash out and start killing, raping, and eating everyone at the mildest of inconveniences and with absolutely no self-control or self-preservation. No other major city in Westeros is like this. Lannisport, Oldtown, Gulltown, White Harbor, they all have completely normal humans.Truly, Aerys II had the right idea.

>>218446245At least Turion meets Young Griff along the way, Brienne in AFFC is just chapter after chapter of nothing happening with no clear endgame in sight and when it finally threatens to go somewhere and be interesting the book ends (no the broken men speech doesn't make up for it)
>>218455711what's worse that we know that neither Arya nor Sansa are in Riverlands so reader knows this search goes nowhere

>>218456122Sansa will be propositioned by either Targ(Jon or Aegon) based on AKOTSK champions houses theory
>>218456259maybe it's because they have to maintain a town that they can't afford to rebuild the tower
>>218456259That reminds me: Fortified churces in late medieval germany could have so called "Gaden" (pic related): Little one-room houses along the interior of the curtain wall. Sometimes even with a cellar. People could live here when they had to flee into the church because of a raid. The Gaden were build and maintained only by the village/town elite though. Poor peasants could not maintain TWO houses at once, and presumably had to camp on the graveyard etc. while under siege. I don't think it's very plausible that a broad swath of the peasant population around winterfell could maintain a (far away) townhouse in addition to their normal place of residence.
>>218456399>I don't think it's very plausible that a broad swath of the peasant population around winterfell could maintain a (far away) townhouse in addition to their normal place of residence.Isn't the implication that the Winter Town is the Stark version of Fuggerei? As in they front 100% the upkeep and it's a charity thing for winter. So yeah I agree with >>218456346, maintaining that plus the entirety of Winterfell is probably why some of the latter doesn't get maintained. Also was it just me who misread the books originally and envisioned Winterfell's two walls as having the winter town within the first wall? I still prefer that because it feels more comfy anyway.
The idea that you can just easily own a holiday home for the whole family is probably grrm's boomer mindset.

>>218456421>Isn't the implication that the Winter Town is the Stark version of Fuggerei? As in they front 100% the upkeep and it's a charity thing for winter. That's a good point. I'm not sure if it's spelled out in the books like that. The wiki atleast doesn't mention who pays for all of this. This also gives the Starks a lot of soft (and if needed: hard) power over the peasants. They take them all in and house them over winter .... if you're a good little goy. >>218456444We're talking about maintaining an entire town for 10k+ people that stands empty for years. You need to pay a constant staff of builders to fix the roofs etc.
>>218456509>You need to pay a constant staff of builders to fix the roofs etc.At the very least it's the time when the roofs need the least maintenance, compared to winter where there'd be constant snow weight on them.
>>218456464>>218456509right my bad, it still makes sense for a world with weird seasons like this, the smallfolk farm in summer and in winter shelter in the town being fed by the winterfell grain, this system wouldn't be needed further south but in the north its impossible to transport food/travel around in winter
You'd also just need people to scoure the whole town regularly to drive out animals and illegal squatters.
>>218456509>They take them all in and house them over winter .... if you're a good little goy.adds a whole new dimension to the house words...
>>218456576This is why I also like my headcanon that it's inside the first of Winterfell's walls, it'd mean there'd be more control over who enters and leaves. Which is the reason main reason aside for defence that walled cities existed historically, it was a tax barrier and control over peasants entering the city.
The wiki does the maths on the population:>Less than one in five homes are occupied in A Game of Thrones, Bran V, when Bran Stark rides to the wolfswood. Luwin later states in Bran VI that Robb Stark's initial army (which is around 12,000 men), when quartered in the settlement, are numerous enough that "the winter town is full to bursting". This occurs during late summer (with autumn arriving in A Clash of Kings, Bran I). Given that four fifths of the winter town's housing would be available for the army with the last fifth being occupied by the civilians who normally live there,[2] the town might therefore house 15,000 people at maximum capacity.
>>218456643That’s a big medieval town
>>218456662GRRM can't do maths (or tax policy)Hence why there's only 5 cities in Westeros and they're all in the 100k+ population range. Or why the Mander doesn't flow into the Blackwater as it logically should you fat fuck.
