Back to Sam though, it is clear to me that once you stop taking his theatrics and charlatanism for whole face value of his character, there is something up with this dude. He seems disturbed and discontent. He manages to cover this up in pretty impressively complex ways through his humor, but something happened to him. I believe, just a gut feeling and have no evidence for, at one point he had to concede defeat to these masculine forces that he instinctually did not want to and knew this, but had his back put against the wall, perhaps even a life or death scenario. This show was essentially the result of the recent years of defeat and succumbing to these forces and the consequences of his psyche thereof, or at least how it was directed especially towards the end.
